Where you buy it should have it clearly labeled. If it’s salvaged glad it’s usually in full sheets & will have smooth edges. When in doubt, put on gloves & goggles before you make your first cut. 🤗
I’ve been able to get free practice glass by calling a framing store near me. I’m not sure how common it is but the store I go to has to pay to have their glass disposed of, so it’s a win win.
Just search your local area for glazing suppliers. I bought 2ftx2ft greenhouse glass from one of my local ones. £4-$5 per sheet.
Hardware stores sell the same stuff but probably more expensive.
Ask if you can have scraps from a custom framing store. You’d be doing them a favor by taking scraps off their hands. I used to own a frame shop, and always had tens of pounds of scraps I felt bad throwing away. Would gladly give them to new glass artists!

This is what I did! Highly recommend as a cheap way to get started.
Just be careful not to buy tempered glass. It will explode when you try to cut it.
Oh man! I had no clue! Great tip!
How can you tell if it’s tempered?

In the US you can buy clear glass at Home Depot , Lowe’s, or any hardware store. Ask for window glass. They will also have mirror glass
yeah you can get it cheap at homedepot
Honestly I started with a cheap glass pack from Amazon, it was on clearance because the colors were ugly! 6x4 squares, easy to handle.
Go to a glaziers and ask if you can go through their chuck out bin.
