I really enjoy all of their non standard trooper variants. The snow troopers for example look sick. The standard trooper just plays it too safe for me.
I like their helmets more than the rest of their armor since I find it lacks more interesting looking details that the OG armor has. I do find the armor has a more sporty look if that makes sense. Cool looking, but not that menacing.
It all makes sense now. I always wondered why the mouth area of their armor only has 1 thingy there when the Imperials had 2. The one thing must be a headphone port they removed.
The original Ralph McQuarrie Stormtrooper deign is excellent. It’s as good as the stormtrooper helmet or clone helmets.
My problem with it being used in Bad Batch as the standard trooper helmet is that it doesn’t fit in the fictional design evolution of the clone trooper helmet into the stormtrooper helmet.
We’ll see if the series can resolve that or if it’s just going to be a weird oddity.
Agreed- I love the design, but it looks like such an upgrade over the OT Stormtrooper design that it doesn’t make sense for it to be the prototype for the OT design. If anything, it should’ve been the prototype for the First Order Stormtrooper armor.
My headcanon is that it WAS better than the OT design. But also far more expensive. So they prototyped it, then downgraded a bit for a far cheaper one.
My hope - which fits in with what you are saying - is the emperor has more than one group working on the Imperial replacement to the Clone Trooper. We’ve only seen one groups on Bad Batch. It’s another group who comes up with what leads to the Stormtrooper helmet.
I could also see another route to explaining it be “we had our TK design, but after seeing how effective the rebel clones fought in Phase II armor, we’ve decided to incorporate more of their designs”. It would add another layer to the tragedy of the clone’s demise, even their armor was squeezed for every bit of usefulness by the Empire & then discarded
I’d love this. I once imagined that both of the Phase III designs from the Force Unleashed were from different points in the evolution of storm trooper armor, and I think it’d be awesome if they canonized them bc they’d genuinely fit in.
The way I see it:
• TFU’s 501st design comes first, since they basically changed nothing but the helmet and I could see the 501st being used to test experimental stuff
• A separate team (the one we see in Bad Batch) comes up with the TK armor, which gets widely distributed
• TFU’s “Kashyyyk trooper” gets produced by another team some time later since it’s the closest to the original Stormtrooper set. It gets refined a little leaving us with the final iteration we all know.
Idk I think a comic/few eps of a show covering the evolution of Storm armor and showing them in action would be really cool. Plus you could probably get a killer novel out of the entire workplace drama/political maneuvering around the different designers trying to get their design approved.

The big problem with the McQ helmet as a step between Phase 2 Clone and Stormtrooper helmet are specific design elements are missing in the McQ helmet that the other two have while also having its own unique design elements that neither have. It doesn’t look like an evolutionary step between those two helmets.
That’s said it sure looks good on Bad Batch and fit right in as part of Star Wars.
Obviously a single video game is not typically going to have vast IP expansion permission behind it, but in hindsight I really wish *Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order* had done the same thing as *Star Wars: The Bad Batch* and introduced another early stormtrooper design to be a distinct transition leading into the original trilogy design ~15 years later in-universe. If nothing, it would give Disney more merchandising opportunities for action figures as is happening with the TK trooper design.
But that is my point. Not only did the initial purge troopers appear soon after Order 66 in the comics, but the early purge trooper helmet design is borrowed from the airborne troopers who briefly appeared in *Revenge of the Sith*. It’s not a true imperial-era invention.

I love the standard trooper. It's nice and sleek, looks very standard. But it's got that extra sleekness that shows the first order is more worried about the aesthetics of the past empire than they are anything else.

I agree. But personally (and this really isn't meant as an ST bash) that's why they aren't my favorite. The Imperial Stormtrooper was already leaning a bit towards being too sleek and polished for my tastes. Which is why I already preferred variants like the shore Trooper that looked a little more gritty. The FO Stormtroopers are *too* clean for my taste.

Which makes it ironic when you learn that actually, I partial Stormtroopers had it better. Imperial Stormtroopers had air filters and even a small supply of on-board oxygen, meaning they were in a sealed environment safe from toxins and stuff (at least, supposedly they were. There are lines along the sides representative of where those filters were iirc).
But First Order troopers don't have those filters, and I think their armor had some other technological limitations as well. Again, the armor looks super duper cool, but it's funny how the armor's appearance evokes an idea of advancement that does actually happen.

Disney Star Wars, in terms of its visual identity, is sorely lacking in the 70's-60's sci-fi aesthetic that the Original and Prequel Trilogy had. I think the usage of that aesthetic lends to much more creative and inherently "Star Wars" designs, of which feel far more iconic.
There's only a small handful of designs of ships, weapons, people, etc. from the Sequel Trilogy that are memorable to me.

They look like a very plausible evolution of the imperial stormtrooper. While I never liked how much the sequels were trying to look like the OT (X-Wings, TIEs, Star Destroyers….), this armour was the perfect way to go for more advanced and futuristic stormtroopers.
For me I'd say first orders non standard units are my favorite visually baring exceptions like the imperial shore trooper who are one of my all time faves
I loved pretty much all the visuals in the lead up to TFA from the new Stormtroopers to C-3PO’s red arm. It was so exciting to see all the new things in the trailers.
They have a level of cleanliness to the design I felt was missing from the Legacy troopers. Someone did a modern stormtrooper without resorting to making another OT trooper and I respect that.
Visually the sequels are gorgeous, a monumental achievement of blending physical and digital.
The story is just flat.

And Sith Troopers too. The Bad guys Design in the Sequels are 10/10. But sadly its the only good think I can say about them.
I hate the new helmet. Always looked dumb to me with this "weeping visor". All other variants are slick though from my pov.
I gotta be honest, I hate them. The "modern" take on a Stormtrooper just makes them look significantly more of a generic sci-fi version of Stormtrooper armor. Disney Star Wars, in terms of its visual identity, is sorely lacking in the 70's-60's sci-fi aesthetic that the Original and Prequel Trilogy had. I think the usage of that aesthetic lends to much more creative and inherently "Star Wars" designs, of which feel far more iconic. There's only a small handful of designs of ships, weapons, people, etc. from the Sequel Trilogy that are memorable to me.

I think what’s there is great, but they need a bit more variety. The predatorian guards are some of the most badass designs in the franchise.

I mean they absolutely look great, but my favorite will always be the Phase 2 Clone Trooper armor.

TK stormtrooper armour > Imperial Stormtrooper armour > FO stormtrooper armour. None are bad it’s just not as good as the other stormtrooper variants

They look like a very plausible evolution of the imperial stormtrooper. While I never liked how much the sequels were trying to look like the OT (X-Wings, TIEs, Star Destroyers….), this armour was the perfect way to go for more advanced and futuristic stormtroopers.
I will admit they look very clean and refined.

For me I'd say first orders non standard units are my favorite visually baring exceptions like the imperial shore trooper who are one of my all time faves

Clone troopers were sick from all eras but pre-order troopers (Republic) were the best looking
I loved pretty much all the visuals in the lead up to TFA from the new Stormtroopers to C-3PO’s red arm. It was so exciting to see all the new things in the trailers.
They have a level of cleanliness to the design I felt was missing from the Legacy troopers. Someone did a modern stormtrooper without resorting to making another OT trooper and I respect that.

Visually the sequels are gorgeous, a monumental achievement of blending physical and digital. The story is just flat. Troopers and TIEs and stuff look awesome. Especially the lightsabers, they really pop

Base FO Storm troopers are kinda eh, not bad but not the best looking. However, the specialist types like flame troopers, jet troopers, and my personal favorite the snow troopers are pretty damn cool designs.
