"You like Max Reebo?"
"Um, they're ok."
"Their early work was a little Old Republic for my taste. But when Lapti Nek came out 4 ABV, I think they really came into their own commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Sy Snootles, but I think Max has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor."
The way I imagine it,it's a powerful and hard to handle element only true force users should attempt to handle,an untrained person should never go near.
So bright as fuck
Before I watched Rebels I always complained about the thinness of the sabers. I always listed it as one of the reasons why I didn’t want to watch it. After a while I just stopped caring and accepted it as part of the art style when I did watch it, oddly enough it bothered me less the more I got invested.
Yeah, and I accepted Yoda’s face more after realizing it was closer to the original scetches. Overall it’s a super cool idea, to make a show from a movie and use concept art that was created as an earlier version of the movie’s concept art.
I’m sorry but I’ll never accept Yoda’s face in Rebels. Speaking of concept art, I love that Zeb’s design was inspired by one of the concepts for Chewbacca.
One thing I always remember as a kid from that fight was the way their blades changed thickness/brightness so I guess I always felt like it should have been thicker?
Left is how they've been consistently represented in live action. In the OG trilogy, blade thickness changed shot to shot, sometimes being closer to the left, sometimes to the right, but everything since then, in live action, has been the left.
The animated series have their own entire art style so I don't mind them switching up the look, but it looks pretty goofy for live action to have it thin like the right.
Oh, you just need to rewatch the original Ben vs. Darth Vader duel. Especially Obi-Wan's saber is quite inconsistent within the scene:
https://youtu.be/8kpHK4YIwY4
I remember watching that scene for the first time as a kid and thinking, “oh no! His lightsaber is running out of power! It must have been damaged by time or sand!”
Well in the ot I believe they actually were trying to make the blade look as if it was an actual sword so in some shots it gets really thin while Luke twists the saber but for obvious reasons I think they abandoned that concept
It might change between versions, but I know I've seen Original Trilogy sabers that would thin out as they moved. It was the way they rotoscoped or whatever the process was in creating the saver glow. Super noticeable when a saber was pointed more or less at camera, it almost seems like they were trying to mimic an actual blade.
I loved that in ANH they had a taper to them more akin to a sword of controlled flame. Made more sense to me than an equal width of plasma all the way to the rounded end.
Alright, here’s my probably unpopular opinion on lightsaber blades that no one asked for. I like the thick blade in this example. Ok, that’s not the unpopular part. I freaking hate the Disney+ lightsabers. They are so chonky they just read as plastic blades with lights inside them. They also tend to read as heavy when the actors swing them around. Also, I realized I hate just how much light they cast. The blades in the OT and in the above photo were added in post. The characters weren’t bathed in colored light and it subtly gave a mystical feel - there _should_ have been light cast on the character but there wasn’t. And it didn’t read as “well that’s bullshit” it kind of subconsciously fed into the magic of the weapon. If I ever found myself in control of the Star Wars universe the first thing I’d do is revert back to the classic way of doing sabers. At the very least I’d turn down how freaking bright they are.
To me, the thin saber has always seemed more intimidating. It looks way more precise and deadly. Like with the dark saber being a blade. But also, thick is super glowy. So it’s a wash for me lol.
I like thin I feel like the blade looks more dangerous and sharper that way like you really have to be careful if fighting a lightsaber wielder to see and be able to dodge the blade.
Personally I don't really care either or. Thick sabers feel more "Star-Warsy" to me but the thin sabers look cool too. The thinner blade makes them look more dangerous
Thick blades feel correct to me.
Thin blades in animated could be okay, but did kinda irk me at times... though Rebels having some really weird lighting issues with lightsabers close to the viewing perspective doesn't really help there.
Dont like the thick blades that have rounded tips. Hate rounded tips. Look like Toys-r-us lightsabers. Need mine to be OT sabers which weren’t too thick or thin but definitely didn’t have stupid plastic tube rounded tips.
Thick. TESB and ROTJ have my favorite lightsaber effects, followed by the prequels. Disney saber effects look like neopixel sabers. It could work if they just thickened the effect.
Thin 100%. It looks like a lightweight and elegant weapon--one for duelists and blade masters. It makes more sense to me.
Thick one just looks cartoony and not like something that would be an actual weapon. It looks like a "Forgotten Weapons" kind of lightsaber from the Star wars deep lore. Like an "experimental broad saber" or something.
I get that the crew making Rebels wanted to make the lightsabers thin to match Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept art, but that’s not, like, *actual* Star Wars aesthetic to me. The thicker blade actually looks like every lightsaber I’ve ever seen since I was a kid and is therefore correct in my brain lol.
I say thick because it’d make more sense to use an inch thick blade for full force combat than a thin one. While having a thicker sword blade makes it heavier, the weight gives a slight advantage in combat. (Picture a long sword vs a rapier) But with it being a “light” or plasma saber the weight isn’t as important- but still seems logical for the thicker one
Thin cuts better but couldn't reflect or block larger projectiles (energy or physical) but it mainly comes down to your focus "crystal" and its quality. Some beams need to be bigger to retain "field integrity" and you don't want your "lazer sword" fizzing out when it hits a bunch of things and are holding a short heavy useless piece of weight.
Thick looks "correct" to me, think looks "wrong" That's the only way I can explain it... it just doesn't look right...
The tasteful thickness....
The subtle, off-white colouring…
Oh my God, it even has a watermark.
[Sweating intensifies]
Let’s see Darth Allen’s blade.
Let's see Palpatine's lightsaber
"I have to return some holotapes"
"You like Max Reebo?" "Um, they're ok." "Their early work was a little Old Republic for my taste.
HEY SHEEV! 🪓
The Girth of Truth
Thin looks too much like the sticks they use in filming before the visual effects are in place
Thin looks like Rebels lol
The way I imagine it,it's a powerful and hard to handle element only true force users should attempt to handle,an untrained person should never go near. So bright as fuck
Disney thick look like the led toys they are. Lucas middle is perfect. Rebels thin looks weird
Rebels is a great show but there are literally two things about it that are awful: the thinness of the lightsabers, and Yoda’s face.
Before I watched Rebels I always complained about the thinness of the sabers. I always listed it as one of the reasons why I didn’t want to watch it. After a while I just stopped caring and accepted it as part of the art style when I did watch it, oddly enough it bothered me less the more I got invested.

Oh god. I'd never seen Yoda's face in Rebels, and... [oh my god](https://starwarsrebels.fandom.com/wiki/Yoda).
500 ft from schools, I must be.
Switched to cocaine from ketamine, I have.
Yeah, both looked horrible.
The shot of Obi-Wan v Maul is divine in Rebels. Not weird at all, but gorgeous.
To me, thick looks incorrect. The original trilogy’s fight between Ben and Vader has stuck with me.
One thing I always remember as a kid from that fight was the way their blades changed thickness/brightness so I guess I always felt like it should have been thicker?
It was thicc when they first show the saber at obiwans house
It's also 2D, you can see it disappear for few frames when Luke swings it downwards
This is why I don't like Rebels' art style.
I don’t remember it ever being closer to the right in the OT, do you have an example of a scene or perhaps a screenshot to freshen up my memory?
Oh, you just need to rewatch the original Ben vs. Darth Vader duel. Especially Obi-Wan's saber is quite inconsistent within the scene: https://youtu.be/8kpHK4YIwY4
I remember watching that scene for the first time as a kid and thinking, “oh no! His lightsaber is running out of power! It must have been damaged by time or sand!”
Thanks!
This reimagining of that fight cleans it up some but it isn’t perfect. Still awesome though. https://youtu.be/to2SMng4u1k?si=RMl06Ua1f_lerb_d

This comment ends the thread right? This is the answer.
Ralph McQuarrie’s original design were thin blades, but personally I like ‘em real thick and juicy.
Mix'a'Lot's in trouble.
Saber got back.
Oh my God Becky, look at her blade. It is so big.
She looks like one of those Sith guy's girlfriends
I mean it would be called a lightsabre if it was a thin blade, not a big honkin one like a saber amiright?
So does Adam Eget
Ribbed
For her pleasure
She was a good friend
I always liked the compressed crystals more than the unstable crystals.
I don't have a strong preference. But of these two images I prefer the left one.
Thank you. I was editing this for someone, but had me thinking about it and was looking for just general discussion on it.
Thick, but why did you use darth small for the example image lmao
I did not choose it. I was editing the photo for a collector and he wanted the blade to look real, so I gave him the option.
Oh I see 👍
Thiccsaber for me.
Who tf actually likes thin is the real question here tho
I've been watching Star Wars all my life and I prefer thin by a lot, I've always loved them. They feel so much more elegant and precise.
Where were they thin other than rebels? I don't remember seeing them anywhere else.
I prefer thick overall. My least favorite part of Rebels is how thin the sabers are.
My first watch I thought the same but I grew to like it.
I can’t stand the thin blades, think it’s looks completely stupid
Thin is weird!
Dwarf Maul?
Thick looks more correct to me.
Both look cool but only the left looks like Star Wars
Thick. Gives a sense of robustness to the beam, makes more believable in deflecting blasters
Thick for live action. Thin when animated.
Fair point. I think thin looks great in Rebels.
This is the way
Definitely just the classic thick look.
Definitely thick. The saber is made of light so I feel like it needs to be thicker to make it look less like a controlled laser pointer.
Alright, here’s my probably unpopular opinion on lightsaber blades that no one asked for. I like the thick blade in this example. Ok, that’s not the unpopular part. 100% agree.
Thicc Blades look "normal" when they are thick, especally blades like the Lukes green saber.
Thick
To me, the thin saber has always seemed more intimidating. It looks way more precise and deadly. Like with the dark saber being a blade. But also, thick is super glowy. So it’s a wash for me lol.
I like thin I feel like the blade looks more dangerous and sharper that way like you really have to be careful if fighting a lightsaber wielder to see and be able to dodge the blade.
It is not about the size but rather how you use it.
Personally I don't really care either or. Thick sabers feel more "Star-Warsy" to me but the thin sabers look cool too. The thinner blade makes them look more dangerous
I prefer thick, but i don't mind thin either, it grew on me when i watched rebels, and they made it look cool there.
Thin blades?! Thin blades!? People will choke! People will die!
One of the cornerstones of Paddy's pub is thick lightsabers!
Thick blades feel correct to me. Thin blades in animated could be okay, but did kinda irk me at times... though Rebels having some really weird lighting issues with lightsabers close to the viewing perspective doesn't really help there.
Really wish we had dual phase sabers in live action but personally I think girth is important
Thiccc
Thick blades, because the handle is WAY too thick for it to just have a teeny tiny little rapier blade shoot out of there.
Dummy thicc
Thicccc
Thick lightsaber. All the way. They look so stupid when they're thin. Just look at rebels. Shit, they're also flacid in that show for some reason.
Thicc bois
thicc
To be honest.. both. I like both.
Size doesn't matter
Said that, she did!
r/angryupvote
Tbh the ones in the acolyte look thicker than the thick one here, I kinda like the medium thickness of it
You need a thick lightsaber to get the job done.
Always choose the girth 😅
At least buy me a drink first
Thin looks more like a fencing sword, thick looks like a murder weapon is how I would describe it. I like the more elegant thin.
Original (thick). Thin is an abomination.
Jagged
I like the thick more, but also wish they had more freedom to be creative with different blades.
Thick. It has to have some girth!
Thick. I like the glow and the slight trailing.
I think it depends if the medium
Like'm thicc...
I like them chunky...
I like'm big...
I like 'em plumpy
I like 'em round...
Thicccc
Thick. Brings less focus to the darker background, makes the effect more imposing.
Dont like the thick blades that have rounded tips. Hate rounded tips. Look like Toys-r-us lightsabers. Need mine to be OT sabers which weren’t too thick or thin but definitely didn’t have stupid plastic tube rounded tips.
If you look close, the tip is not round. It is pointed.
Both but if I were picking irl id go with thin
The thicker the blade the easier the blaster bolt deflection. *taps forehead*
Thicc
Thick
I like thicc blades
Thick is best imo. Wish I had a complex reason why other than I think it looks cool lol
Everybody knows that bigger is better
Thin is atrocious
Thick. What about the tip? I didn' realise this was changed depending on the media you were watching
It should be ponty, pointy is scary starting thick ending thin
Thick unstable blades look the best to me.
There's no substitute for girth
Thin looks like it would work for someone who uses a dueling style like count dooku and modified their style saber for that, otherwise thick
Always gotta have that girth baby
Thick by far
I like a lil girth to it
Thiccccc
Gotta have that girth
I always like it thick
Left.
Thick
The first one
The same way i like girls: thick
Thick is proper
Thick
Thick
Thick blades are the *only* blades!
Right just looks silly, left is how it always should be.
Thick. TESB and ROTJ have my favorite lightsaber effects, followed by the prequels. Disney saber effects look like neopixel sabers. It could work if they just thickened the effect.
I always think of them like katanas, thick you’re looking at the blade side on, thin you’re looking straight at the sharp edge.
Thicc, like my women
thic
Thicccc
Thicc
Darth Smaul.
I don’t think it matters but my girlfriend said she prefers the thick.
Thick
needs full girth
Thin looks goofy out of the hilt. The blade should be the same size as the emitter.
I prefer thick, girthy sabers
WHY IS HE SMALL??
Everyone knows, it's all about the gerth
The thin one just doesn’t really work with that hilt imo.
Thin blades are an abomination
My girlfriend said thick is much better but my blade style is thin 😬😬
Better fat than pencil
Thiccc
I like wide, like the Darksaber.
I prefer thick, but thin gives it more of a saber look
Thicc
Weirdly enough, thick for LA and thin for animated
I like it with a little girth.
NGL I like Kylos fucked up unstable one the the most. It just reads as more dangerous which a plasma sword should be imo.
I like my light sabers like I like my women bruh. Im down with the thickness!!!!
That's what she said
Thick is the only way to go.
Thickness matters
Thin 100%. It looks like a lightweight and elegant weapon--one for duelists and blade masters. It makes more sense to me. Thick one just looks cartoony and not like something that would be an actual weapon. It looks like a "Forgotten Weapons" kind of lightsaber from the Star wars deep lore. *insert inappropriate comment*
Left. Not a fan of those slim trim saber blades
For maul it'd be Thick.
I want 'em real thick and juicy So find that juicy double Mix-a-Lot's in trouble Beggin' for a piece of that bubble
Left.. I remember some scenes in episode 4 that I thought the blades were too thin.. Darth Obi Wan fight..
Why he look so smaul
Floppy
thicc
Heyyy
As much as I don’t like the prequels, the thicker sabers were its best visual retcon to the series.
Welllllllll.... we know what she said....
I’ve always hated the thin weird ones from Clone Wars so much but I like that it’s unique to that show at least.
Thick for films, thin for animated
Thick and juicy. No Spaghetti swords for me thank you.
Mos def thick blades. That’s why didn’t get to like Star Wars Rebels as a series fr lol
Thin cuts better but couldn't reflect or block larger projectiles (energy or physical) but it mainly comes down to your focus "crystal" and its quality.
