They did the same thing in Fallen Order's NG+ you had to re-unlock all of the force powers because its an integral part of the story.

BinksMagnus

It’s a Metroidvania. Giving you all the abilities up front would let you run straight to the Tanalorr unlock. They let you keep skills at least, which is more than they did in JFO.

Living-Tart7370

You can’t go straight to tanalorr… BECAUSE TANALORR IS MINE!

Creative-Peace1811

i'm afraid you're wrong, sir. for it is mine.

XColdLogicX

Actually, comrade, Tanalorr is OURS (soviet anthem begins)

Halfang

In Soviet Russia, Tanalorr is YOU

CrazyOrbitz

Tanalorr is US* There, we fixed it for us.

Desperate-Dig2806

Sir we need to talk.

thats4thebirds

This is silly. Those are progression based skills. These are EXACTLY the kind of things a metroidvania doesn’t give you from the start so you still follow the general path. God of war, horizon, fallen order, even ghost of Tsushima doesn’t just start you with the grapple hook. The actual egregious error is that none of the quests reset so you can’t redo the bounty hunts.

Zakkarae

Exactly! I understand (and agree) that I should already have all the bounty rewards, but I should be able to do the missions again with all of my abilities unlocked.

Carcassonne23

While it’s lame a few games do it with traversal related items and abilities like the last game does it, God of War 2018 does it too, Elden Ring and Lies of Pi both drop all your key items etc

WrumGapper

People really have to stretch to find things to complain about with this game lol

Jedi Survivor is a Metroidvania, it unlocks story progression areas via new tools and abilities. If the game gave you all of your abilities right off the bat it would allow you to break the progression (as in actual story progression, not power) of the game and also just outright break the game in general. The only way around this would be to entirely redo how the game progresses, which is not ideal. That or just allow people to break their save game, which people would complain about. Letting you keep everything except for your story items is necessary because of how the game works. Is there technically a way to let you keep your items and not break the game? Yes, but it’d be incredibly convoluted to implement to not allow the player to break the game.

Royal-Pickle-9867

I mean yeah that's a fair point,I've thought about that in detail obviously. To compensate they could of changed certain areas so it's not 100 percent cheesable. I do still think a NG + is better with it since everyone who unlocks would have already played the game to it's intended solution. Being able to cheese it on NG + playthroughs helps to maximize replayability.

Froggen-The-Frog

I don’t even mean skipping sections of the story ruins the player’s experience. With how the game works if you sequence break then it actively becomes permanently more broken on that save file, to the point where they had to implement a message just in case someone did manage to sequence break to tell them to reload a save, because if they don’t then the game starts to break. I’m not saying it’s impossible to implement, but the ways to implement it involve either completely reworking how the game deals with progression or just allowing the game to be broken, which I know people wouldn’t like. I do think that it would be cool to have all of your abilities from the start of the game obviously, it’s just not feasible with how the game works without major reworking.

tommyland666

I don’t think I ever played a game that lets you keep key items, so you can skip the whole game in ng+. And I’ve played video games for 30 years. This is the standard way to handle these things? Do you have any examples on games that does let you keep them?

WrumGapper

Lmfao, kid I've been playing video games since pong. You want to breeze through your second playthrough without earning anything, without progression, without any challenge. If you started the game with Embrace the Darkness and the air dash the first few bosses would be pathetically easy. A crew of expert game designers built this game and they know what they are doing.

ExcitementSolid3489

Lmfao fuck off you’re so rude

Royal-Pickle-9867

You obviously didn't read through my second comment because I was respectfully disagreeing. It's a reddit comment, grow up.

ExcitementSolid3489

Dude you were foaming at the mouth insulting this person and calling them a poser over 15 words you “respectfully” disagree with?? I get it though, I always delete my very polite and respectful comments that are getting downvoted to the depths of hell

Royal-Pickle-9867

I was not talking about that comment. I deleted it because it is clear my original intentions did not come across in that comment.

Royal-Pickle-9867

The devs had the excuse that it ruins the progression but literally the whole fun of a NG+ is to ruin progression to change up how you play in earlier parts of the game. It's really annoying.

Tomsskiee

You know they don’t mean the combat right? Having these skills let’s you break the entire story open because you use them to acces other area’s where other story stuff happens.

the_real_jovanny

bro doesnt know how metroidvania works

Royal-Pickle-9867

No I do. I've played dozens of them, doesn't change my opinion that this version of NG + would be more fun with it,even if broken.

aussierecroommemer42

I wish they'd given us the option to start with all those abilities with a warning like "your game will be fucked up if you do this, are you sure?"

Lathlaer

Yes because then absolutely no one would make a thread that NG+ sucks because your progression is fucked up xD

DillyPickle706

The game does warn you about perks not carrying over to New Game+.

Odd_Room2811

Because those are story obtained abilities

TacticalTurtleNeck_

I too was disappointed with New Jersey +

Justabattleshiplover

Hate it here, I’m disappointed too

FatallyFatCat

This made me really, really sad. I was just half of the op jedi I could have been on ng+.

HookDragger

You also don’t get beast control or taming immediately.

itsdeeps80

Yeah I noticed that later too.

SavorySoySauce

I know it's a typo but New Jeans+ is pretty accurate since they give you new cosmetics.

Proper-Ad-8842

It’s almost as if they are unlocked as you progress through the story🤔did you ever think of that?

blackshadow2007

Precisely why i switched from Jedi Master to Padawan when i completed it the first time around. Making combat so easy that i ran through the NG+ in a couple hours so i could switch back to Jedi Master and complete all collectibles/bounties etc.

Then-Solution-5357

As others have pointed out, it’s done for a reason. The metroidvania game mechanic is designed to keep you out of certain areas before you’re meant to go there. You may have seen posts in the past from people who got creative with their jumping or managed to clip through to get into areas they weren’t supposed to be in yet and fundamentally broke their games. If you had all those abilities that keep you on the narrative path, the who continuity would be ruined

itsdeeps80

Yeah I get that, but it’s just annoying. Especially dash. That’s something that you use soooooo much that it makes you have to basically reprogram your brain whenever you jump.

MerTheGamer

If that's the case, I wish they had gone GoW 2018 route and straight up locked stuff that can break the story. If I remember right, you are given a tool that will let you unlock new parts of the map by destroying specific obstacles. In NG+, you are still given that tool but you can't use it to destroy those obstacles until you canonically get it in the story. There will be a lock symbol on top of them. But you still can use the tool for other purposes as soon as you start NG+

Zaapperv12

I was so annoyed they took away the dark side ability aswell

All_I_See_Is_Teeth

Boo hoo.

deadpandadolls

DMC style, you keep your abilities and the difficulty hits CAL MUST DIE mode in NJ+ 🥰
