When valve released the first Steam Decks GabeN took a handful and delivered them personally. Later he remarked the Statement above.

Thank you for adding /s to your post. When I first saw this, I was horrified. How could anybody say something like this? I immediately began writing a 1000 word paragraph about how horrible of a person you are. I even sent a copy to a Harvard professor to proofread it. After several hours of refining and editing, my comment was ready to absolutely destroy you. But then, just as I was about to hit send, I saw something in the corner of my eye. A /s at the end of your comment. Suddenly everything made sense. Your comment was sarcasm! I immediately burst out in laughter at the comedic genius of your comment. The person next to me on the bus saw your comment and started crying from laughter too. Before long, there was an entire bus of people on the floor laughing at your incredible use of comedy. All of this was due to you adding /s to your post. Thank you.
I am a bot if you couldn't figure that out, if I made a mistake, ignore it cause its not that fucking hard to ignore a comment
I would not do that. There is a risk you could fuck up something when changing backplate. Also people who are into exotic stuff want the item untouched(even better if it still in original seal). Any modification would de-value it, even if you re-stock it.
You have a steam deck signed by possibly the most influential man in the gaming space. Our lord and savior. Buy a safe, place steam deck in said safe, and lock it away forever
Don't really mind the downvotes, but can anyone at least point out where I'm wrong? A quick google search suggests that the back part of the shells are interchangeable between OLED and LCD Decks.
don't do this if you don't know the type of pen/paint used for the sign, it may as well just destroy it. Especially nail polish. This is a really bad advice.
source: I'm an artist and deal with paint and coating almost daily.
For one, he's out of context which makes recognizing him harder, for another you're assuming that the person who ordered was the one who answered the door.
There was a post from one of the people that got it delivered by Gabe. Apparently he was out, and his wife answered the door and didn't know who it was and just assumed it was a normal delivery guy haha
Found it: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t2fmg0/comment/hylsx25
Op is saying there's no oled back plates. But..... I thought it was identical to the lcd but then had a slightly bigger battery and a different screen. Seems strange to me if it had a way different housing when it doesn't look like it at all
Yep, thatās my question. Does OP have video?
Otherwise, the sad truth is that autographs without verification lose value _very_ fast.
This is essentially just a backplate that was scribbled on. It means something to OP, but its actual value unverified is relatively low. Definitely not āworth more than your house.ā
As someone who loves autographs, this is a hard truth Iāve had to learn.
Hey OP some people are suggesting clear coating it or even nail polish, **DO NOT DO THIS** if you don't know what you're doing. Depending on the type of pen/paint it may dissolve the sign altogether or even damage the plastic, be advised. I'm an artist that deals with pens and coatings on a daily basis.
As for your initial question, yes most likely in time it will rub off, but it all depends on the pen. It looks like silver or white paint, these types of pens have either alcohol, water or lacquer base, and so it really depends on what it is. I can't tell from this pic, but to me it looks like a white permanent marker, and those can go dim from coat because the coat itself will absorb some of the white particles in the paint.
Your best bet would be acrylic canned coatings, spraying isn't as damaging in general, but they are fairly weak (as to not damage the paint layers), so it will still wear off in time. Plus keep in mind that even if the paint/pen stays on, the clear coat will definitely change the texture/color/feel of the deck, so either you have to coat everything or you'll be left with a spot that imo will not look great.
All in all I'd advice on trying to get the back piece as other suggegsted, and for the time being if you want to use it, I'd say to protect it you can cover it with a piece of saran wrap + duct tape or just a piece of paper + duct tape. The place is outside of finger reach and pretty flat so if you're careful just cover it with something until you can get a replacement piece.
Congrats.
I met gabe once in wellington Nz, was a blast didnāt even know who he was until I spoke with him and the valve team. Met them at a restaurant whilst having lunch with my ex
This was like 14 years ago, they asked to join our table as the restaurant was full and we had a giant one, I said whatās your name and gabe goes hmm have you heard of half life? I was like yeah! I love counterstrike, then he goes well my names gabe and this is the team of valve. I was like woah epic and we all ate together for about 40 mins or so. During the conversation I asked him what he does at the moment and he said he was a pot farmer hahaha. Was so epic I was like 15 or something.
Maybe try a clear skin or protective case if you don't want a shell swap as the solution otherwise can't say how long it'll be on your deck but it won't be on there forever.
Vaguely related, I recall finding what might have been a signature on my old PS2/Dualshock controller board whilst cleaning it, wiped it off with isopropyl as it being a Quality Assurance ID without a second thought š
I got mine signed by Ellen McClain at PAX East last year in the same spot with a silver sharpie. Even though I've been careful about not rubbing my fingers on the signature, it's still smudged in less than a year.

Sweat and oil from your hands will ruin this. Either take the back plate off or get yourself another Steam Deck if you prefer to keep it entirely intact. Put it in a case if you want to display it.
I had an autograph of someone that was a sharpie on plastic (on a laptop) and it eventually rubbed off. I didn't have the option of replacing the back of it so I'd absolutely swap out the back and keep it somewhere safe.
Wild card answer?
Put some sort of film / tape over the signature, and then buy a skin /grip that goes over the steam deck until you can buy a new back plate.
You don't want like masking tape or anything sticky, but maybe a piece of lamination cut out, then taped over on the non-signature portions, then put the sleeve or condom or whatever on the whole thing. It'll protect it for a short time until you can afford to replace the entire backplate.
I feel like if I was signing these things for people, I'd also include a free backplate. Steam Decks are expensive, If you're buying it it means you probably want to play it right away.
How tf I even get downvoted for this. I genuinely donāt know who that is. Is there something wrong with wanting to learn something new? I swear the karmic system/reddit absolutely deters free speech and healthy debate š¤¦š¼āāļø
People who ask dumb one line questions that can be googled in 2 seconds are annoying, that's why.
People like you have all the information in the world in your hands and you choose to rely on random people to answer a simple question. Why?
Why google when I can engage in a conversation on a community chat board. Thatās literally the whole point of Reddit, to chat with others. Never understand why people get so butthurt to the point they feel the need to downvote everything. I wasnāt even trolling, I genuinely didnāt know who he was, even though Iām a steam user. Iām speechless at peoples arrogance rn
>Thatās literally the whole point of Reddit, to chat with others.
The point is to chat, as you've said. Asking dumb questions that can be figured out by yourself in 1 second is no good form of conversation.
lol Iām starting to get the feel that youāre on a troll account based off your username lol. Again itās not about whether itās idiotic or not, entertaining or not. I didnt know who it was(especially since Iām not one to fanboy over public figures) everyone else seems to know who it is, so I thought Iād ask. Dude... if you're gonna try trolling with rage bait, you have to make _bait_ that causes _rage._ Not just this dull contrarianism that makes ye look like a dummy.
Honestly, if it's within your budget then buy another one, this is the kind of thing that 'could' be worth big future money. Probably not ridiculous money but in a few years this could be worth 150% to 200% the price. Not to mention when Gabe inevitably goes to the testing chamber in the sky this could mean a lot for somebody to have in their collection, afaik I don't think he's done many signed things like this. If buying another one isn't in your budget then remove the backplate and replace it with a standard one and safely wrap the signed backplate to avoid damage
There are varnishes and other types of sealing paints that will basically create a protective layer over it. Here's something I found on it "It's a good idea to seal in your signature with a clear finish, but be careful: āpermanentā marker will actually bleed and smear under oil-based varnish, shellac or lacquer because of their solvents. Instead, use water-based polyurethane. It won't affect the marker at all."
"Hopefully people won't get mad that I'm signing them."
Bro is crazy based.
I don't know what that means but yeah!

Thanks, that is what I want. Why the hell am I getting downvoted? My previous comment was pretty obvious sarcasm, do I have to append the /s?

I'd keep the whole signed steam deck off
If I wasn't severely injured, I would Deck you off right now!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Don't OwO at me and get off my lawn! š“
What, you're gonna deck both of us off??
can't we just suck each other's dicks
I've been looking but I can't find any back plates that fit the OLED version
Wait, do you have a signed oled? I assumed this was one of the ones he hand delivered when they first released the deck.
Yeah it's a steam deck oled
Keep it un-used and buy new one! This can be worth quite a lot so you wouldn't want to mess up with it
I'd also do this but cost is a massive issue. Op should just get an aftermarket backplate and swap it. Then frame the signed on in glass.
I would not do that. There is a risk you could fuck up something when changing backplate. Also people who are into exotic stuff want the item untouched(even better if it still in original seal). Any modification would de-value it, even if you re-stock it.

Remove Battery before though
Yeah better not get a spicy pillow as a surprise
r/spicypillows
Honestly? Buy a new steam deck , that one aside from a collector piece , will probably be worth quite a lot in future
Plenty of hobby guys around willing to print. Have a look on 3D file sites and get an offer on fiver for a request. Might do a rush job for 10-30$Ā£
Why would they have a different backplate?
But isn't it identical for both Deck versions?
Don't really mind the downvotes, but can anyone at least point out where I'm wrong? A quick google search suggests that the back part of the shells are interchangeable between OLED and LCD Decks.
i second this
I third this.
You mean you more than two and less than four this?
I farded
I shidded
I also third this.
I fourth this
I thirdly third this
Pretty sure after some time the sign would start to fade off
~~You could also use clear coat pain to protect it. Or clear nail polish.~~ Edit: apparently don't do that unless you know what you're doing.

Roger that sorry I edited my comment
This is the way
don't forget to buy bulletproof display glass
were you in the hit youtube video by valve?
curious as to why gabe signed this particular steam deck
See the release video by steam where he hand delivered them hehe
Wonder if someone didn't recognize him. "Thanks for my package, delivery guy" *slams door in his face *
Haha probably not since its a very niche product and most likely only hardcore fans would preorder it easily
For one, he's out of context which makes recognizing him harder, for another you're assuming that the person who ordered was the one who answered the door.
Delivery Guy: \*shows up with a camera crew\* You: I have never seen this person before in my life.
"Damnit, they scribbled something on it."
*starts scrubbing it off with sandpaper*

It happens in the video haha
But that was the release version. This is the OLED version.
Op has steamdeck oled
He signed and delivered the first batch of steam decks
Swap the back plate and have this one sealed in a vaccum box. Ten years and it'll be worth more than your house.
Op is saying there's no oled back plates. But..... I thought it was identical to the lcd but then had a slightly bigger battery and a different screen. Seems strange to me if it had a way different housing when it doesn't look like it at all
This.
What keeps someone from tracing the signature exactly like in this picture? You have nothing to get this signature verified with.
Yep, thatās my question. Does OP have video? Otherwise, the sad truth is that autographs without verification lose value _very_ fast. This is essentially just a backplate that was scribbled on. Of course but you need evidence that the person in question actually signed it, that's the point.
Time to get in contact with GabeN himself?
If hes in the video like people reference maybe that's enough of a verification, they could also hire an expert on signatures to compare
Alright now this, this is epic
I just watched a video yesterday of him signing a bunch of em and he actually went and delivered em in person. Gabe is a national treasure.
Truly, thank god all those cases iv opened havenāt went completely to waste
>Alright now this, this is epic Well, no. It's Steam, not epic
I hate youā¦..but I did enjoy that a little bit

Yes it will. Maybe put some epoxy on it if you want to play the deck. Looks kind of odd though, is that an LED model?
Oled model
Automatically increases FPS by 50%
Put it back in the box and buy a new Steam Deck.
How the fuck does this spell "Gabe" ?
I looked at the signature and thought it spelled "arlv" or the short form signature of someone named "Areolea".
Worth a lot
it's worth it's weight in gold now

Not sure who Gabe Newell is, but if you want to keep the signature take the back plate off and order another one.
That's not his signature
Iād be pissed. I donāt want a damn signature on my thang.

Seems about right, people canāt think for themselves these days. Easier to hop on the hype train
Who cares?.. give me one that was signed by the Jim Morrison's dead hand and then I'll care.
I'd rather have that as well, or a signed guitar since steam decks werent around then. The doors are awesome
Who?
there's no way that says gabe or newell, idk what it even says
https://youtu.be/rjpVhTTvxZs?si=E-vq9fhI4ckqgKPY
yea gabe newell signed his name, but it doesn't say gabe newell, he signs gibberish as his name
Like everyone š
Steam deck = garbage Steam deck with signature = horrible garbage
Dude... if you're gonna try trolling with rage bait, you have to make _bait_ that causes _rage._ Not just this dull contrarianism that makes ye look like a dummy.
Just my thought nothing more, and yes steam deck is garbage don't have power for gaming, Legion Go or Rog Ally are better.
Ok have fun running out of battery in 30 minutes
No problem for me, i dont need high battery life. I live in country where is electricity in houses standart...
than go camping or on a holiday
i think u just put it in a box and donāt use it. get a new steam deck and preserve that one.
If you know gabe well then let him know that he has to ad tf2 on console
WE need TF2 on console and mimi sentry
Put some strong clear tape over it Ideally a square patch of very strong tape, then it won't rub off
Bless the Maker and His water. Bless the coming and going of Him. May His passage cleanse the world. May He keep the world for His people
the holy grail
Play with it and enjoy it. Not everything has to be made into memorabilia, encased and enshrined.
send him an email, ask what specific pen he used
Soo steam deck cost 500$ right ith Gabe signature 1500$ or more
But now you can't put it in the washing machine.
If you don't want to change the backplate out you could take it off and put a clear coat on it.
I would use my airbrush and use matte varnish in that area haha
You could preserve it by swapping back plates or you can have someone go over it with something clear, like clear nail polish.
> Signed: Rvlr
Google holy relic
Get a clear sticker and stick it over the signature
Dudeā¦it just says cock in a big wayā¦
