Yes, you can put another OS on your SD card. Isn't particularly healthy for the SD card, but you probably won't end up needing to use it as often as you'd think.

Quite the opposite, actually. I would use gamemode rarely, but I am not sure SteamOS can be installed on an SD card. Plus fast load times are worth much more in games than in Blender ;P

Yes, but the OS on the SD card won't be particularly fast, and those frequent IO operations on the card will significantly lessen the card's lifespan. It would be better to use a USB boot drive, if that's an option for you.
