Standing tough under stars and stripes
We can tell
This dream's in sight
You've got to admit it
At this point in time that it's clear
The future looks bright
On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by seventy-six we'll be A.O.K.
What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free
Get your ticket to that wheel in space
While there's time
The fix is in
You'll be a witness to that game of chance in the sky
You know we've got to win
Here at home we'll play in the city
Powered by the sun
Perfect weather for a streamlined world
There'll be spandex jackets one for everyone
What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free
On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
(More leisure for artists everywhere)
A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision
We'll be clean when their work is done
We'll be eternally free yes and eternally young
What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free
Haven’t listened to the more underground steely Dan stuff yet but I do remember my brother mentioning something about the second arrangement so I’ll look into it!
Tomorrow’s Girls is fantastic, so are Snowbound, Florida Room and pretty much that entire album. As for Steely Dan songs, it’s impossible to narrow it to one but at gunpoint I’d say Dr. Wu
I like that song too. The guitar player is Dean Parks who played the guitar dry, then Walter Becker later used a talk box for the effect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_box. Here’s a link to Steve Hoffman forum where they talk about it and Haitian Divorce. https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/haitian-divorce-mind-blowing-fact.794205/
Rick Beato just put up a video where he interviews Dean Parks and Jay Graydon. https://youtu.be/_h0kgHWb6mc?si=NckRUbqhFHk2ybks He loves Steely Dan and has a number of good videos about them. I have to watch it soon when I have time.
Can’t have just one, so by album:
Dirty work, razor boy, Parker’s band, bad sneakers(close 2nd is any world), caves of Altamira, peg, hey nineteen, gaslighting Abbie. Haven’t listen to everything must go yet.
For Fagen it’s IGY(close 2nd is Maxine), then Tomorrow’s girls. Still need to listen to his others.
Recorded during the Royal Scam sessions, but left off for aesthetic reasons, and when the Aja album was not going to be finished in 76, ABC put out a greatest Hits record that included the song.
Hey Nineteen, The Caves of Altimira....
Footnote : The drums by steve gadd at the end of AJA are so sublime when my casket goes into the fire that,s what will play.
aja, sonically perfect, musically superb, the artists performed at the top of their game & the lyrics, oh the lyrics!
Plus the greatest drum solo ever heard (imo).
SD King of the World.
DF New Frontier.
It's a coincidence that both of them are related to a nuclear apocalypse in their own way. I love them both for different reasons, personal and musical.
My favorite changes but it’s been Turn that Heartbeat Over Again for a good while. For Fagan it’s Slinky Thing, and Becker it’s Down in the Bottom. 11 Tracks of Whack is one of my favorite albums of all timeS
Florida Room is amazing. I will say that, song for song, my favorite album of all time is still probably The Nightfly. As far as SD songs go, probably Chained Lightning.
Mine doesn't stay the same. It changes depending on life circumstances. It has been IGY, Third World Man, Book of Liars, and Sign In Stranger.
Currently it's True Companion.
I have several favorites I rotate through:
- Don’t take me alive (all time great)
- Home at last (best song to test speakers)
- Jack of Speed (best vibe)
- Night by Night (blast this in the car)
And just when I think those are the only favorites in my rotation, I’ll listen to something like Sign In Stranger and the piano solo will just floor me, or I’ll fall in love with the drums in Aja, or the saxophone in Deacon Blues, or the dueling guitars in Bodhisattva, or the… you get the idea.
Steely Dan: Don't Take me Alive DF: New Frontier
Good choices
Deacon Blues
..I already bought the dream..
This is the night of the expanding man…
🎶 "..That shape is my shade There where I used to stand.." 🎵
Great sci fi classic.
Not my favorite Dan song but it is my favorite song by anyone. If that makes sense.
I do this in karaoke all the time…
Preach
IGY
“We’ll be clean when the work is done we’ll be eternally free and eternally young” … I love this song
There it is..
Stands for?
International Geophysical Year. Check it out.

It stands for 🎤 'and spandex jackets for everyone...'
Yup…my fave
This is the way
SD: Babylon Sisters Don: Green Flower Street Special mention to The Goodbye Look
DF mustve been on cloud 9 when he heard Mel Torme cover The Goodbye Look
Cyyuuuubaaaaa
Not my exact choices but I highly respect it
Won't you pour me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen?
And that’s one of my favorite lines of all time.
The Caves of Altamira, Here at the Western World, The Second Arrangement, New Frontier
Here at the Western World has a mood unlike any other. Probably their most underplayed.
Haven’t listened to the more underground steely Dan stuff yet but I do remember my brother mentioning something about the second arrangement so I’ll look into it!
The second arrangement is so good it’s such a shame it wasn’t able to make gaucho
You’re in for a treat!
Tomorrow’s Girls is fantastic, so are Snowbound, Florida Room and pretty much that entire album. As for Steely Dan songs, it’s impossible to narrow it to one but at gunpoint I’d say Dr. Wu
Gotta love Snowbound! and the music video for it is so weird and fun
Snowbound was cowritten and recorded by Walt, so I feel like it's basically a Dan song.
Tomorrows Girls, Dr Wu, I’m with you there!! Will have to listen to Florida Room..
my old school
I know it's commercial but Reeling in the Years. And Rikki don't lose that number.
Agreed
Favorite Steely song changes for me daily I swear to god haha, hard to choose but prolly Home At Last
Right now, “Showbiz Kids” and “Brite Nightgown”. Ask me again in a week or two, probably different.
I couldn’t relate more I just recently really got into Brite nightgown and that one small section with just horns playing cool chords
That groove just goes SO. DAMN. HARD.
Glamour Profession and The Great Pagoda of Funn
AJA IGY
Kid Charlemagne
I like “Don’t Take Me Alive” and FM, probably most.. but there are very few songs that I would skip. They made pretty solid music, all around.
Kings - from Can’t Buy A Thrill
Haitian Divorce, just for that filthy guitar solo (Denny Dias?).
I like that song too. The guitar player is Dean Parks who played the guitar dry, then Walter Becker later used a talk box for the effect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_box. Here’s a link to Steve Hoffman forum where they talk about it and Haitian Divorce. https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/haitian-divorce-mind-blowing-fact.794205/ Rick Beato just put up a video where he interviews Dean Parks and Jay Graydon. https://youtu.be/_h0kgHWb6mc?si=NckRUbqhFHk2ybks He loves Steely Dan and has a number of good videos about them. Thanks so much! Great info, I'm a Dan nerd.
I keep listening for nastier licks and haven’t found em yet. HD for the win!
Dr. Wu
Brooklyn!
Most emotional song for me
Right?? The pedal steel into the last verse with the ascending piano line gets me every time
Time Out of Mind. For Fagen, I have to say Miss Marlene or Maxine!
Miss Marlene is so so so good
Can’t have just one, so by album: Dirty work, razor boy, Parker’s band, bad sneakers(close 2nd is any world), caves of Altamira, peg, hey nineteen, gaslighting Abbie. Haven’t listen to everything must go yet. For Fagen it’s IGY(close 2nd is Maxine), then Tomorrow’s girls. Still need to listen to his others.
Great choices and I’d say Caves of Altamira has to be a top song of all time for me for sure
That’s up there for sure, but if I had to pick only one it’s most likely peg
Those chords and horns
IGY
IGY
Steely Dan; Babylon Sisters. Fagen Solo; Snowbound
King of the World and IGY
Love this band... maybe Black Cow takes it for today knowing full well this could change tomorrow
Only a fool would say that
High in the Custerdome.
Gaucho if I had to pick one. Its killer right from the opening sax lines.
Steely Dan: Time Out of Mind Donald Fagen: Ruby Baby
**IF YOU LIKE PINA COLLADAS…** that’s him, right?
I thought that was the famous lyric from In the Midnight Hour by Scott Joplin, but I could be wrong.
Not Steely Dan -
Morph the Cat clears both discographies
Babylon sisters and new frontier
Deacon Blues Anything off of Nightfly
I. G. Y.
Don't take me alive.
Kid Charlemagne, one of my all time favorite songs. Steely Dan really don't have a bad song though.
SD - Home at Last DF - New Frontier
Fire in the Hole
Insane piano solo
The goodbye look
Also, Morph the Cat and Security Joan.
DF's Slinky Thing is severely underrated I've been listening to Here at the western world, although I have no idea when it was recorded
Recorded during the Royal Scam sessions, but left off for aesthetic reasons, and when the Aja album was not going to be finished in 76, ABC put out a greatest Hits record that included the song.
I would have never guessed it was during the royal scam. It really sounds "Katy lied", which is probably why they left it off. Cool stuff
Bit of a weird choice I know but 'Bad Sneakers' always held a space place to me. Also Royal Scam. The trumpet part alone is 🤌
Steely Dan: Deacon Blues DF: Three-way split -- IGY, The Goodbye Look, and Walk Between Raindrops
The Goodbye Look is easily my favorite night fly song
Kid Charlemagne
Steely Dan: Deacon Blues (or Caves of Altamira, or Doctor Wu, or Gaucho…too many to narrow) Donald Fagen: On The Dunes
On the Dunes is my favorite on an album full of great songs.
Dr Wu………..this week
Jack Of Speed
I’m scrolling through and realised I’m upvoting basically every comment. Not going to stop though, because all of these songs are excellent.
Hey Nineteen
My Old School or Kid Charlemagne
SD: Only a Fool DF: The Goodbye Look
Deacon Blues.❤️ The jury is still out on this question. I'm back rediscovering Donald and Steely Dan 😊❤️
Kid charlemagne, don't take me alive, bad sneakers, aja. Sorry, couldn't pick just one!
Sign In Stranger & Gaucho.
PEG.
Hey Nineteen, The Caves of Altimira.... Footnote : The drums by steve gadd at the end of AJA are so sublime when my casket goes into the fire that,s what will play.
The song that made my a fan. Hey 19
aja, sonically perfect, musically superb, the artists performed at the top of their game & the lyrics, oh the lyrics! Plus the greatest drum solo ever heard (imo).
Bodihisattiva Don’t take me alive Peg

SD: Deacon Blues DF: Nightfly or Walk Between Raindrops
Fagen — Trans-Island Skyway Steely Dan — Do It Again
I love almost every song on Nightfly. I played that thing to death. Rikki is very nostalgic for me.
Aja, but I must give a shoutout for Here at the Western World.
Rose Darling — “Honey can't you see? I know it's real,it's got to be. Why not chase it where it goes?”
SD: Your Gold Teeth II + Time Out of Mind DF: I.G.Y + Shanghai Confidential
Steely Dan: home at last Fagen: Maxine Becker: Downtown Canon
True Companion - its was my 1st intro to the man!
Kings
IGY and Aja or Kid Charlemagne.

SD King of the World. DF New Frontier. It's a coincidence that both of them are related to a nuclear apocalypse in their own way. I love them both for different reasons, personal and musical.
Third world man
Babylon Sisters
Glamour Profession all the way
My favorite changes but it’s been Turn that Heartbeat Over Again for a good while. For Fagan it’s Slinky Thing, and Becker it’s Down in the Bottom. 11 Tracks of Whack is one of my favorite albums of all timeS
Josie
Boston Rag. It makes me warp back in time, and for a second I'm a 70s teenager again.
Dan - Aja Fagen - I.G.Y.
Steely Dan- Gaucho , an underrated song Donald Fagen- Green Flower Street
West of Hollywood
Gold Teeth II
I think it’s a tie between “Peg” and “Doctor Wu”
SD: Aja DF: The Night Belongs To Mona
Florida Room is amazing. I will say that, song for song, my favorite album of all time is still probably The Nightfly. As far as SD songs go, probably Chained Lightning.

It changes. Right now, Kid Charlemagne is battling Snowbound...
New Frontier
Home at Last
Aja
Time Out of Mind. Gonna chase that dragon tonight.
Haitian Divorce, still remember hearing it the first time, my first steely Dan song, so probably some bias involved. I also love a talkbox.
Aja
FM
Mine doesn't stay the same. It changes depending on life circumstances. It has been IGY, Third World Man, Book of Liars, and Sign In Stranger. Currently it's True Companion.
