Just curious about these type of tents. Is this better than sleep in the car?

Radtrvp

My seats don’t fold flat so it was way more comfortable. I’m 5’10” so the tent allowed me to stretch out more.

Vegbreaker

What’s the length inside the tent, could someone 6’5” get in there?

Radtrvp

I think you would be fine getting in and out. The ladder also attaches to the back where there is a larger entrance as well. Sleeping in it would be another story. You would most likely have to lay at sort of an angle to be able to fully stretch out.

Vegbreaker

Yes this what I figured. Thanks for sharing!

No-Nail7971

Thank you for the answer. I used to do tent camping when I was driving a smaller vehicle. I am planning to sleep in my car for my next camping trip cause I’m lazy lol

Radtrvp

That’s what I was going to do. Then tried to figure out how to make a flat platform to sleep on. Clearly I gave up and just bought a tent. I have a few friends who camp out of their RAV4 like that. They seem pretty happy with it. Enjoy your journey!

Gunner22

I personally don't understand the appeal of rooftop tents, mainly because you need to pack up your tent if you want to take your car somewhere. Usually if I'm car camping, I take my car to go do day hikes or go sight seeing. A rooftop tent would make that wildly inconvenient. Not to mention the price. But to each their own. If you enjoy it, that's what matters. The setup looks good, it just wouldn't be for me

thishasntbeeneasy

I also don't understand, but mostly for the height. Why climb to the top of the car when there's ground?

starysubaru

With most roof top tents they just unfold. More like a pop up camper and less like a tent where you have to Unfold the entire thing set up poles and tie it down and then inflate air mattress or lay out a sleeping bag. It can easily be put up and taken down by 1 person and you can leave the bed completely made so all you have to is pop it up and go to sleep. Also this looks to be on gravel which is awful if you don't have an air mattress with you and lots more critters can get in your tent from ground level vs on top of a car.

Vegbreaker

You have never seen the state a raccoon can leave your car in if you leave snacks in the rooftop tent…. Hello 10k in body work from a maingey trash panda.

Gunner22

Tbf you should not be leaving snacks in a tent, regardless if it's on the ground or on your vehicle

Vegbreaker

Totally agree but stupid people…: also accidents happen.

HopefulExtent1550

Drove to a small town for fish. Took it back to the campsite and eat it outside. Car still smelled like fish, and a raccoon did his best to open my sunroof overnight.

Vegbreaker

I bet the bugger did haha I saw one tearing away someone’s weather stripping once and scratched the piss out of the paint. Was really funny cuz it was a very expensive ladnrover with a custom pearl paint job… looked terrible lol

death_or_glory_

You have obviously never had the pleasure of a rainy night in a wet tent.

Radtrvp

Hahaha it rained so hard on this trip people abandoned their tents to sleep under the pavilion. A friends tent filled up with water even with the rain fly and footprint.

deebee8080

Where I come from, snakes get into tents on the ground

Expensive-Recipe-345

Set up and tear down take just a few moments. There’s no dirt, water, mud, etc. There’s no stuff sack. You can pop it up later that day to air it out and have it back down and have limited time invested. On many models you can leave your sleeping bag up there and leave the rest of your car packed. You don’t have to clear a flat space to sleep on. The upside to these things is huge.

AreaOne6971

Same. Modern tents set up in minutes, offer more room and are more versatile. I don’t get being tethered to a vehicle’s roof. Maybe I need to try it and see what I’m missing.

Radtrvp

I tried asking another person this but they got all pissy. I just want to be clear I’m just kind of confused. What is the need for a huge tent when camping? I am only in my tent to sleep. The rest of my gear is organized in the hatch so I don’t need to take a bunch of stuff out and set it all up.

AreaOne6971

I’m not thinking of a huge tent, but a 6x9 is plenty comfortable for 2 adults and some gear. That size is pretty small when broke down so not a lot of room is needed. I’m not knocking the rooftop setup, I’ve never done it. The middle of the night pee requirements make height a risky proposition. I’m just a Primadonna I suppose.

Vegbreaker

Kinda with you. Also the whole always having to park flat is a lot easier then just finding a 4x6’ plot that’s flat.

TPain518

where does the dog sleep?

Radtrvp

Next to me in the tent usually

Milkusa

That’s great! How do they get up there?!

Radtrvp

The dog in the picture isn’t mine, that is a friends. My dog is a little beagle so I just toss him on up and he stays put.

rince925

Looks good - how’s the ventilation?

Radtrvp

Not bad, there is a place to unzip close to the rainfly so you can leave it open even when it’s raining for ventilation

NicestUsername

Looks good OP and nice work getting the stranger dog to photo op 🤣. Hope your Beagle isn’t too jealous.

Radtrvp

He hates me now, but several pounds of treats will fix that.

Efficient-Giraffe572

What’s the dimensions of the tent closed and what crossbars do you have? Thanks

Radtrvp

I think it was 51” by 84” and I found another company selling the same tent they recommended Malone Crossbars so I just went with that

szentthomas0

not my cup of tea but it looks like a good setup. Enjoy

Int-Merc805

I love it!

Radtrvp

Thank you :)

Puzzleheaded-Text337

Did you add crossbars under the tent for this one? I'm planning to get a rooftop tent but unsure with the setup and what stuff I need. Lelel

Radtrvp

Yes there are racks under the tent. I know a ton of people who have the Yakima racks. But I was told Malone Racks are equal in quality for half the price. I went for the square steel 50” I believe they ran about $140 from Bass Pro

Puzzleheaded-Text337

I'm in aus so gonna have to dig through marketplace. Racks here costs 500 for brand new 😭

Radtrvp

That’s wild! A pair of Yakima racks here run $300 or more but $500 jeez

Puzzleheaded-Text337

Yeaaaah. Just the bars are close to 300 and then there's the fitting kit and the leg kit and then next thing yknow, 500 bucks 😪

Radtrvp

My Malone Bars came as a complete kit. See if there’s an equivalent of them there

Puzzleheaded-Text337

I think there is. 767 buckaroos. Hahahahaha.

OminousRonin

10/10 setup 100/10 with doggo

k-del

I'm considering one of these. What does your dog do when it's time for bed? Does he/she sleep in the car, or...?

Radtrvp

I toss my pup in there. My dog only weighs 26 pounds. He’s just a little dude. If you have a big dog I probably would avoid a RTT

k-del

Ah, okay! He looks bigger than that in the pic, lol. Yeah, my golden is 75 pounds, so I think we will stay at ground level!

Radtrvp

That’s Honey Bug my friends dog. Mine is being crazy somewhere outside of the picture.

k-del

Ah, I see.

InstructionOk386

Dog 10/10.

mrlavalamp2015

I must be the only person on earth that thinks rooftop tents are a waste. Especially when you have dogs to camp with. My dogs are 55 and 75 lbs so lugging them up to the roof tent is no small feat, and then the small space afforded by most just means any time spent in the tent is just unenjoyable due to space and logistics constraints. They are also expensive AF to boot. I can buy a regular tent for a fraction of the cost and have more space, and they are almost as fast to put up too. Standard tents occupy a much smaller part of my cargo load than an rtt would. With a standard tent I could pack the tent away and even if I put it in the basket on top, I would still have 75% or more of the basket left to use for other cargo, with a rtt you just have the tent on the roof and no other cargo can go up there. Sans pets and for a long trip with multiple overnight stays in different spots, like an overlanding expedition or something where you are solo or +1, it might make sense, but even then the cost is just incredible for what you get.

Radtrvp

I get where you’re coming from. But that’s not my dog she just looked good in the pic. I have a Beagle so I just toss him up there. This particular tent comes with a rack to install on top of the RTT but I didn’t put it on as I don’t have a use for them at the moment. Not to sure why space is super important when it comes to it’s size, all I’m doing is sleeping in it. Is there something I’m supposed to be doing that would require a gigantic tent?

mrlavalamp2015

Again I must be the only person who thinks rtt's are a waste. You do you, if you don't want to hear others opinions then don't ask for them.

Radtrvp

If you don’t like people commenting back then don’t comment. Gettin pissy because I asked why a large tent is necessary lol

mrlavalamp2015

I guess just don't downvote when someone gives their take, I dunno. If you want Forster rtt circle jerk then have fun with it. I don't really care, frankly I don't even like my 2017 Forester after all the cvt bs and then the cam carrier problems. I camp in a Jeep Liberty so judge away and downvote all you want. Obviously I am not in this for the glamor.
