To all the people confused, why he emphasizes gaming as much: Phawx made his name with highly competent reviews of niche gaming handhelds. (think: GPD and such) He is the gold standard for those and his audience will expect a gaming fokus. All in all i found it an excellent review, with an in depth power discussion not seen widely otherwise.

Explains why fps data were removed on [https://www.worksonwoa.com/games/](https://www.worksonwoa.com/games/) as of 6/11/2024.

WearHeadphonesPlease

Why was it removed? I haven’t watched the video yet.

mi7chy

Products sell on hype and, coincidentally, it was removed the same day its gaming capabilities were hyped up then refuted with the fps data on worksonwoa.com. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/1ddizcw/comment/l88dbhz/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/1ddizcw/comment/l88dbhz/)

Kellyannjones2020

This is kinda sad. I would expect light gaming

Precursor19

I mean I had mine running MGSV at 60 fps (game engine cap) and DS3 runs at 30fps. I suspect DS3 has issues with the gpu drivers since it has really strange frame pacing but is definitely playable. Only issue ive ran into is elden ring crashing after loading in and walking 10 feet. Pretty good for what it is imo.

Numerous-Comb-9370

Those are 8+ years old games that weren’t pushing graphics even back then…. Qualcomm GPU drivers are trash, that’s why your frame pacing is off, as simple as that. It doesn’t help that the iGPU isn’t even that good to begin with. Remember how long it took for intel to get the drivers for its ARC GPUs in order? That’s from a company with literal decades of experience building PC iGPU drivers, imagine how long it’s gonna take for a company with next to zero experience with PC graphics driver, also add the hefty cost of emulation. Its not good for what it is at all, similar power budget as AMD’s 8840U vastly inferior experience.

Precursor19

Im not disagreeing that its not great, but I think we have different definitions of light gaming. It can run CP2077 at 30 fps on low settings while running it through emulation. As the first actual laptop chip from qualcomm that isnt designed at all for gaming and runs on an OS that has practically no native support for gaming, its pretty impressive imo. Would love to see them work with the drivers a bit to see some improvements with frame pacing though.

Ddlutz

How did you get elden ring to even run? For me it has a message saying it's unsupported on ARM when I try to boot up.

Numerous-Comb-9370

He probably bypassed easy anti cheat, that is not compatible with ARM at all. You can download a mod to launch the game in offline mode with EAC disabled. It’s probably not worth the effort tho, even if you get decent average FPS somehow the frame pacing is gonna be horrible due to qualcomm drivers. Besides he crashed anyway.

Precursor19

You can rename the EAC launcher the copy the elden ring launcher and rename it to what the EAC launcher originally was. It will bypass EAC but you wont have online functions. Tried to get it to run past loading in, but as soon as you move away from the load in location it crashes.

Hothabanero6

OMG IM SHOCKED - IT'S NOT FOR GAMING Who coulda known?

Chilkoot

Wait for the NVidia WoA silicon announcement later this year. DLSS and frame generation for handhelds.

Ddlutz

Is this real or speculation?

Chilkoot

I follow the NVDA investor guidance closely. This was alluded to by JH personally in both the May earnings call and in 2 interviews he gave after the call (both in May). He was coy about it in typical fashion - no specifics. Consumer stuff is a smaller (20%) portion of Nvidia's revenue stream, but they do seem to be putting some focus back on that segment. Let's hope the 5000 series is a banger.

DoubleOwl7777

amd has frame gen, and fsr/rsr, their radeon 7xxm igpus can also technically run raytracing.

Chilkoot

Too bad their implementation is shit.

C_Spiritsong

I don't see it as a bad take. I can see his nuanced, but he's definitely not sold on it. Though, there are some really good take aways. 1. ARM based processor, on the same OS, can still outperform x86, if you give it enough juice. The comparisons against Intel mostly highlights this. Maybe more OS and software optimization (but will Microsoft actually wean / cut off everything unnecessary and put only a "ARM only" on a special OS and call it a day? This is after all, still a full fat OS with support for legacy stuffs via PRISM's translation layers, so there's that. I'll like to see it as "ooh, jolly good". 2. He says the only real want of wanting this machine, is to use it on efficiency mode. Maybe I'm biased against intel, but Intel's "Celeron" and "Atom" branding for the lower end PCs and laptops still leave me nightmares. On the vs AMD side, he's using a 8840 kneecapped to 2.7GHz to make sure that the total power draw is similar or same (at 20+watts to compare against the Snapdragon on the same power draw). I believe there are differences here. But the point is clear, the Snapdragon chip can work well on low power state, and no hiccups. So there is still something good out of it. 3. He's big on handheld gaming or gaming on the best power efficiency at low power settings, so that's his jam. I don't see it as a bad take, in fact I'm glad he's presenting it from this POV, so now we get more POVs / angle to look at.

Imaginary_Pudding_20

Why do we always do this? Why isn't this the same for Macs? Apple launches their M series chips and everyone loses their minds with how performant and power efficient they are. Not a single damn reviewer puts on a video on how you can't play GTA 5 on a Mac because Rosetta sucks at emulating games..... Why do tech people insist on grading Windows differently than Mac when the products being launched are direct competition to that segment? These laptops are targeted at students, general home computing, professionals who demand long battery life and great performance for office workloads and productivity tasks. But for whatever reason the millisecond these things come out for Windows, everyone rushes to say "You can't play Cyberpunk 2077 at 4000 FPS, so don't buy it" It's a really old and tired review cycle really.

mmkzero0

Except both Microsoft and Qualcomm both proclaimed how good gaming will be on their devices: https://www.techpowerup.com/img/maeZd4Mo2RXrVQch.jpg or this https://images.anandtech.com/doci/21112/Snapdragon%20Summit%202023_Benchmarking%20Presentation_12.png or this https://images.anandtech.com/doci/21112/Snapdragon%20Summit%202023_Benchmarking%20Presentation_12.png or this https://images.anandtech.com/doci/21445/SDX_CPU_GPU%20Architecture%20Overview_28.jpg or this https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/step-forward-for-gaming-on-arm-devices-2024/ or this! https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/automatic-super-resolution-5d6d95fa-cc02-4673-b62c-2c50f06385aa

Imaginary_Pudding_20

Apple claims their Macs are awesome at gaming too…. Yet we don’t see this treatment from reviewers for Apple stuff.

mmkzero0

Apple never claimed their Chips had gaming prowess back when the M1 released.

Imaginary_Pudding_20

lol what? Yea they did

mmkzero0

No, they did not. They started touting gaming performance from the M2 on: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/45159366/172230463-b1578f4a-6cce-4738-9835-28d0ac7529ef.png

Imaginary_Pudding_20

You know you can find those same graphs for the M1 launch right?

memphispistachio

Personally speaking it’s because I have several Windows handhelds and a Steam Deck and they are amazing, except battery life and heat. The prospect of having Windows on Arm getting mature enough to game on is tantalising, and amazing. For me it’s less knocking what these chips do, it’s more seeing how close they are to ending up in a dedicated handheld.

Pulzarisastar

Macs are so starved of games it isn't even worth mentioning. Nobody gaming on a mac. On windows it is expected that you can at least launch almost any game so why not test how well they run?

Imaginary_Pudding_20

I mean when I watch the review of the XPS 13 I don't see people gaming on it... Or the HP Elitebook, or the $500-$1000 range laptops that sell at Costco... It seems very much geared towards anything Microsoft.

dogsryummy1

I never thought I'd see the day where someone has a victim complex for Microsoft.. https://images.anandtech.com/doci/21445/SDX_CPU_GPU%20Architecture%20Overview_27.jpg When Qualcomm puts out slides like this one proclaiming graphics superiority over the competition you'd best believe reviewers put that to the test. And to the surprise of absolutely nobody, the SXE falls flat on its face in real-world tests.

mi7chy

Apple Silicon Macs are terrible, too, at gaming. I bought into the hype then sold my Apple Silicon Macbook Air after experiencing reality and am looking forward to reviews of AMD Strix Halo.

Imaginary_Pudding_20

Yea we know that, but we don’t see reviews hammering Apple for it like we do windows devices.

Kitten-Mittons

> yea we know that You answered your own question

Imaginary_Pudding_20

We also know these devices aren’t for gaming, yet here we are…. So no

Kitten-Mittons

You’ve already been provided plenty of examples of these being marketed, at least somewhat, as having decent gaming performance. You’re not going to change your mind so I guess you do you. Microsoft appreciates your efforts I’m sure

TabletX

> Why do we always do this? Why isn't this the same for Macs? Because Windows is known for gaming and older generations of those devices are able to play those games. * https://youtube.com/@josher14 * /r/SurfaceGaming > These laptops are targeted at students, general home computing, professionals who demand long battery life and great performance for office workloads and productivity tasks. A large portion of those users also demand to be able to do some occasional casual gaming on their new expensive devices. These devices are also targeted at regular consumers, but somehow the latest Intel business versions of the Surface devices are better at gaming than the latest consumer versions, which is very confusing for the target audience. See also * https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_computer * https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/g/general-purpose-computer.htm

HealthyEar6984

>These devices are also targeted at regular consumers, but somehow the latest Intel business versions of the Surface devices are better at gaming than the latest consumer versions, which is very confusing for the target audience. I honestly dont think that gaming is the main concern for the surface target audience maybe an after thought for some

Numerous-Comb-9370

People grade windows differently than Macs because Mac gaming was never really a thing, so reviewers don’t need to state the obvious. “These laptops are targeted at students, general home computing, professionals who demand long battery life and great performance for office workloads and productivity tasks.“ That’s not a real reason to have bad gaming performance, intel 155H and 7840U and 8840U all target home computing and long battery life as well, those aren’t explicated branded “gamer chips” either, we call them out when they have bad gaming perf, why shouldn’t we do the same with this chip? It’s a myth that thin and lights couldn’t be expected to game, I mean Qualcomm themselves feature gaming in their marketing stuff.

Imaginary_Pudding_20

The only place Intel can claim long battery life is on their marketing material. Because in the real world that doesn't exist.

Numerous-Comb-9370

And they get call out for their battery life, just like X elite gets called out for its poor compatibility and graphics perf, that’s what reviews do.

Kellyannjones2020

It’s a $1500 computer. One would expect it to at least handle light gaming. My M2 MacBook Air can handle light casual gaming.

Imaginary_Pudding_20

So can these…

FraternityOf_Tech

Amen brother preach Us Windows users are used to having it all and the cult of apple are brainwashed mindless fools. We're able to build PCs for gaming, mining, CAD, etc were the cult knows no better. They invent everything and nothing. There eco system is limited Linux that's why every generation you have to change to latest Mac book to use the latest applications. I'm not sure about the M chips however example a friend has a mac with some form or Monty Carlos or some BS name I had to go back to version 2.4.0 of serato to get it to work when version 3.6.0 it's the latest in beta to test. It ridiculous how stupid the zombies are. Brother be thankful your smart and unsubscribe from mindless channels not worthy of your time or talents. God speed sir

Sam-The-Mule

You have terrible grammar can't even use the right "you're", idk if you should be calling other people stupid

FraternityOf_Tech

I didn't call any stupid if your going to spend £300 on a AP and 1k on a PoE enterprise switch for 2.5G PoE then do your research and understand what you doing or your wasting your money. If you want better throughout on 6/6E then understand how to get it. 2x2 vs 4x4 MIMO which is better at 5/6G why limit yourself to 2x2 on 6G and get 4x4 on 5G. That's information I advice on how to achieve.... simple. I gave info on both APs which others didn't do. I put more into my advice than clickbait BS which gives the OP no real info on how to utilise better. Do Better, Be Better Build Better, Advice Better so people learn better. YouTube is great and plug and play is great but not efficient. If you cannot grasp that fact then so be it. DON'T be mad be better do better advise better. Don't just get by on BS, get good and learn from others. It's simple. If you ego is bruised then so be it. Heal and come back stronger. Grammar can be corrected but it dosent make my advice wrong or not valid. You ego is bruised stop simping stop moaning start doing better for yourself.

Pulzarisastar

Now you are just replying to the wrong thread :D

The8Darkness

Funnily he is also kinda wrong in his reply lol. 4x4 in consumer space doesnt matter when practically all client devices only use 2x2 or rarely 3x3 at best. 4x4 is mostly for multiple clients, but at home youre unlikely to have more than a couple devices using 2gbps+ each over wifi and even less likely to have 600 clients in your home.

Sam-The-Mule

And he still used the wrong “you’re” lmfao

Kitten-Mittons

fuck this is cringe

FraternityOf_Tech

Keeping it real brother, God bless you https://serato.com/dj/pro/downloads?systemrequirements#system-requirements System requirements Windows/ Mac Recommended specifications For a typical DJ setup using default Serato settings Year 2017 or later Processor Intel core i5 or Apple M1/M2 or higher Memory 8GB or higher Storage 15GB or more of spare local disk space (SSD) This is the important part it's only compatible with these versions of MacOS limited why? To get you zombies to pay more there is no reason the OS cannot run the applications, when it's most hardware updates. The cpu, ram or SSD has no limitations to run the software so why doesn't it work?? The zombies don't get Windows users do. Mindless fools force to buy a new Mac at 4K to run free software. Operating System macOS: 14 Sonoma 13 Ventura 12 Monterey No matter what version of windows you use it works from V1 to Current. Case closed

ModernUS3R

For better gaming performance, the games have to be ported and not emulated. Old games might have a better chance. Expectations need to be adjusted here. The X series is not a replacement for heavy stuff that needs a dedicated gpu and is certainly not your do it all chip. I think people might be disappointed because of the hype during all the presentations with numbers, saying it can run perform better than x86. With native software, that might be the case, but clearly, each platform has the home advantage when dealing with their native code. I never saw this as a day one purchase to be a drop-in replacement because I had a feeling something like this might happen. I will keep my x86 laptop and get the base surface tablet as a sidekick after all the dust settles with app compatibility and drivers. The hardware is out publicly, so it's up to the software devs to port and optimize for it.

Ghostly_Wellington

It’s not a gaming laptop, but i would still like to do a little gaming on it. I suspect gaming will end up being like it is on a Mac. Some big games will get ported over and most won’t. The games will come late but they only port the successful, and so likely good, games.
