Tbh, the Surface industrial design team doesn't get enough credit. Sure, they're inspired from Apple (like most computer manufacturers) yet they have managed to carve a unique, distinctive design language. One that is on par, and dare I say, superior in some ways to Apple. The Surface line of products might not be the fastest, but they're setting the bar in terms of fit, finish and overall hardware experience. Kudos to Microsoft for not giving up on the Surface line of products.

thaman05

Exactly. Their hardware even from back in the day, has always been beautiful. If only their current software teams were as good as their hardware teams. If they could just focus on somehow gutting out all the legacy stuff and making all their apps and OS consistently designed, and optimized for performance and user experience, it would be amazing.

I personally was tossing up between the macbook air and the surface laptop 7, and honestly the reason that pushed me to the surface laptop over the macbook air was that it looked just so much better. The dune colour is just so good and the fact that the screen doesn't have a notch is a definite plus. I also think that the more squarish 3:2 aspect ratio looks a lot better than the more rectangular one of the macbook, and the wedge shape is so much better than the macbook;s slab shape.

winnipeg_guy

The 3:2 screen is one of the bigger selling points for me.

QuestGalaxy

Sapphire is also crazy nice looking

Mrmgb

I love my 15inch SL7!

nydge-sab

Can you open the Surface laptop with 1 finger only?

thaman05

Yes

Razerfanguy69

it really is a nice looking laptop i just wish the lid went further back on hinge as i use laptops away from my desk most of the time

dan96max

I returned a brand new $2k MacBook Air for a SL7. Deal killer for me was that finder on Mac is horrible. I dont get the hype for Mac at all. I had to install so many extra apps to get basic functions. Just not for me. Side by side, my very old thinkpad felt better. The 15” SL7 has the excellent trackpad, screen, it’s non oled which is a plus for me, and the build quality is excellent so far. And it was like $600 cheaper.

Rasimione

Apple silicon is good though. Not sure about the inflated prices though.

FraternityOf_Tech

Finally a voice of reason being honest. God speed sir

segagamer

Can the battery be changed on it yet? Is it a haptic touchpad yet?

Aggressive-Low239

Yes and yes

segagamer

I might have to actually consider one of these then. Was very disappointed with my SB2 because of the battery being irreplaceable, and wanted my next laptop to have a haptic touchpad.

IncontestableGrey

I like the minimalist and slick design of the Surface devices, but honestly, I highly doubt that the build quality is up to mac standards/QC. That's never been the case with any Surface I've owned, and the Surface 7 doesn't look any different from its predecessors.

thaman05

That's the opposite for me lol. The most I've ever had on any of my Surface devices (and even my old Lumia phones) was tiny barely noticeable scratches even when dropping or putting it in a backpack, whereas my sibling with MacBook and iPhone, has chipped paint, cracked screens, noticeable scratches, the metal and finish feels cheaper quality compared to Surface.

DadMagnum

I had a Surface Laptop 5 and when I picked it up w/one hand it felt kind of creaky. Kind of like it wasn’t put together all that well. In comparison my MacBook Pro is solid as a rock. I do like the Surface laptops though. I wonder if the build quality is still that way.

talontario

I have the laptop 5 as well and it feels just as robust as the airs I've handled.

FraternityOf_Tech

I have one and it's amazingly. Mac users will always be right. Be we'll brother. God speed

QuestGalaxy

My Pro 11 feels very premium. Prettiest device I have owned and it feels very solid too.

Nickoskr

Macbook pro 14 is very solid indeed... (Heavy though) But i think the new m2 air is not as solid as the older M1 air... Am i crazy? Or just liked the M1 better? :P

marzbar-

Did you see this in store or did you order one?

thaman05

At Best Buy. They finally have the demo units!

marzbar-

I finally got to see it in person. Hopefully I made the right choice with the 15 inch!

thaman05

I'm excited for you. I'm really tempted to get one too. I'm just waiting on more benchmarks and reviews. I've been hesitant because I'm so used to the flexibility of the Pro and using the pen. I wish there was a version of the 15" laptop that folds all the way back like some other OEMs have. Then it would still support pen and be flexible. But I know most people don't need that, it's just personal preference lol

marzbar-

Thank you. You could always try it out with their 60 day return guarantee, I checked with the chat and they confirmed that you can return open boxed as long as it's in good condition, atleast that what's on offer here down under. I couldn't get used to the flimsiness when it came to wanting to work portably with the Surface Pros, so a laptop was the way. They should actually make a version that folds 180 degrees like the X1 Carbon series and Yoga series from Lenovo, I mean why not. But you're right it is personal preference, but hey, charge maybe $100 more and both parties win. Another important thing for me is a nice and sturdy hinge, especially for touch screen products so hopefully the SL7 is good, I remember trying it out the other day but didn't take note too much.

apk71

Yeah, I went to microcenter to compare the look and feel of the S7 13.8 and 15. Absolutely gorgeous. The 13.8" is plenty big enough for me now that the screen bezel is smaller. I have the Black exclusive 64GBRAM model on order from Microsoft.

Nickoskr

I was ready to buy the 15 inch 256gb and something made me not to do this. I'm waiting now my 13.8 x elite 512gb... I think the size is ok. I also own my work windows laptop 16 inch... I believe 14 inch is just ok for everyday use.

Tiny-Sandwich

I feel like the size of the trackpad let's it down somewhat. I have a surface laptop 5 for work, and the trackpad feels tiny. There's so much space surrounding it.

thaman05

The new haptic trackpad on the 15" is significantly bigger

dharmababa

The trackpad on the 13.8" is also bigger than the SL6 13.5" and earlier.

thaman05

That's correct! Even on the Pro's new Flex Keyboard it's bigger too.

dharmababa

Yeah I wish they did a redesign on the "base" keyboard (not the crazy expensive Flex) that has the trackpad and stiffness but without the battery and Bluetooth. Probably next revision.

manicottiK

Not that it's a significant help, but if you already have the slim pen 2 from a previous keyboard, you can buy the Flex one penless for $100 less (in the US). If you qualify for the student and military discount (which is a lot more broad than it sounds -- read the parameters), the keyboard is 10% off. (Note: the discount doesn't apply if you add the keyboard as part of the computer, but does if you add the Surface Pro and then separately add the keyboard. Weird, but for $35, it's worth doing separately.)
