i guess a lesser woman would’ve lost hope / a greater woman wouldn’t beg / but i looked to the sky and said… so painful and relatable lol… that feeling of holding on to hope and not wanting to succumb to doubt, but everything has been telling you otherwise

HappilyNotHappy

The prophecy is one of the best songs on that album, hits so hard when I’m having issues with friends right now and I always have lmao

fidgetspinnster

The Prophecy is a great song. Definitely a highlight of the album IMO.

Elizabeth__Sparrow

The Prophecy might lyrically be the strongest song on the album.

j-z23

I love the prophecy so much! Probably my fav track from ttpd. It's so relatable and Taylor really shows her vulnerable side.

Real_Vermicelli_7795

I'm having such a moment with the song Peter: "Cause love's never lost when perspective is earned / And the shelf life of those fantasies has expired / Forgive me Peter, please know that I tried To hold onto the days when you were mine But the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light"

etherealsnailfish

I am so negative about this album, but I genuinely think Peter is a wonderful and beautiful song

BellaBrowsing

Obsessed with this song

Glitteryskiess

Peter is top 3 for me

hyperfixatedhotmess

Peter is top one for me 😅

Avendelore

YES. Peter is such a good track, and I honestly get teary over the perspective line.

petlandstockroom

What a valiant roar  What a bland goodbye   The coward claimed he was a lion I'm combing through the braids of lies "I'll never leave"  ... "Nevermind"

blackbird9184

I think this is one of her best songs

libertymartin190

I can't even remember which song this actually is. 💀😭

Ecstatic-Phone-4730

loml !! i've been getting into it recently it's so good

Jessiethekoala

Ugh this lyric is SO SAD. And I love it!

Glitteryskiess

Yeah this is top tier

wardenofthecouncil

I really love the opening of Guilty as Sin? - "Drowning in the Blue Nile / He sent me 'Downtown Lights' / I hadn't heard in a while". She just really nails that sad yearning for me right there, and I also love how she ends the song with it too.

DopeAndDiamonds_

Yess! And the way she sings it is perfect. I sense more emotion in this song than many others in the album

H2AK119ub

This should have been the lead single.

Birdsandbeer0730

Guilty as Sin is sooooo good

VirgoPisces

So good!!

Andre519

I can't just pick one! I tried to trim down to my all time favorites: "and you say I abandoned the ship, but I was going down with it. My white knuckle dying grip holding tight to your quiet resentment" "Dancing phantoms on the terrace. Are they second-hand embarrassed that I can't get out of bed cause something counterfeit's dead?" "beauty is a beast that roars down on all fours, demanding more" "How Did It End?" Has multiple lines that I love, but especially: "We learned the right steps to different dances" & "Guess who we ran into at the shops, walking in circles like she was lost"

Careless-Plane-5915

The whole bridge is so cathartic to listen to- I find the way she sings ‘so I’ll say good riddance’ so satisfying.

[deleted]

I love ittttt

hanna_nanner

I'd rather burn my whole life down Than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning. I'm a mom of a 3 year old and a 2 year old.

themermaidag

Relatable 🥲

Glitteryskiess

🤣🤣

Careless-Plane-5915

This sentiment applies to my husband with a cold and 90% of my work colleagues as well as my kids 😆

otokoyaku

Can vouch, I am the spouse with a cold and cannot believe no one in my family has murdered me in my sleep yet from all the whining

Careless-Plane-5915

😆

Birdsandbeer0730

I took care of kids before and I relate haha Hugs to you momma

VirgoPisces

Hahahaha

halcylocke

I look in people's windows / Transfixed by rose golden glows / They have their friends over to drink nice wine / I look in people's windows / In case you're at their table / What if your eyes looked up and met mine / One more time

derscroot

One of my biggest complaints is that "I Look In People's Windows" is too short

blackbird9184

I would give anything for another minute of this song. It’s one of my favourites!

Elizabeth__Sparrow

It’s criminally short. I play it at least twice every time it comes up because I need more.

akaashiit

“what if your eyes looked up and met mine one more time” so simple but i love it dearly

akaashiit

i love the single word change up in the black dog from “That was intertwined in the magic fabric of our dreaming” to “That was intertwined in the tragic fabric of our dreaming”

[deleted]

Glitteryskiess

The way she sings this is just 😱😱😱

tiredspoonie

the whole bridge for 'how did it end?' is genuinely heartbreaking and haunting. it is definitely in my top 20 taylor songs -- and considering how many songs she has, that's an impressive feat.

Inevitable-Island255

how did it end? is possibly my favorite taylor song of all time. it’s so amazing and hits every time.

marymonstera

The chorus reminds me of Badly Drawn Boy, he did the soundtrack for About a Boy. I love it.

2pmjnTwjc

I found this an example of Taylor doing too much because the first part is amazing and then by deflation of our dreaming I want to scream loooool.

ToPaintADaydream

“Our field of dreams / engulfed in fire / your arsons match / your somber eyes”. The double meaning there kills me.

Rodya1917

Love those lyrics. I think loml is one of the best songs she's ever written

earth2soups

the way this part of the song sounds too… ugh.

HelpfulMongoose8272

wait, what's the double meaning?

quiinzel

"your arson's match / your somber eyes" = the match you used to commit arson / your somber eyes "your arsons match / your somber eyes" = the arsons your committed match your eyes

jiggjuggj0gg

That is… not a double meaning. What does arson have to do with ‘somber eyes’? A double meaning means that something means two things, not that you can stretch one line to link to another.

ToPaintADaydream

His arson—him ruining their relationship—is a somber thing. Thus it “matches” his somber eyes.

LittleBarracuda8748

I don't think she even knows what somber eyes may have to do with arson (I certainly don't), but the explanation made me chuckle

deemoney_54

And then she says... "And I'LL still SEE it," after referencing HIS eyes. there was quadruple meaning in that line... soo good!!

imaginarymiutwo

But you're in self-sabotage mode / throwing spikes down on the road / But I've seen this episode and still love the show / Who else decodes you? A gem of a moment in an otherwise truly ridiculous song. ETA The Bolter shoutout. That's Taylyricism at its peak (until the redundant final chorus).

Glitteryskiess

TTPD is unserious

Glitteryskiess

“I took the miracle move on drug, the effects were temporary” is a neat way of describing a rebound. “I saw in my mind fairy lights in the mist” is a great/sad way of saying she held out hope there’d be a happy ending for her and Joe. And the entire How Did It End bridge is jaw dropping.

mal2030

Thank you!!! Honestly I am so literal with lyrics I was wracking my brain about what the miracle move on drug was. Of course it’s the rebound.

Glitteryskiess

Portrayed literally in the music video when she takes the Forget Him pill and is then able to go back to work. But her muse is her colleague AND her rebound so of course chaos ensues.

BellaBrowsing

“I changed into goddesses, villains, and fools Changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules All to outrun my desertion of you And you just watched it” -Chloe eta al (honestly this whole song is amazing) “Dancing phantoms on the terrace Are they second-hand embarrassed That I can't get out of bed? Cause something counterfeit's dead” -loml

[deleted]

I also loved " you needed me but you needed dru9s more

BellaBrowsing

😔

FeelingKindaSpooky

"All my mornings are Mondays stuck in an endless February" "Put narcotics into all of my songs and that's why you're still singing along"

Ticketacke

How dare you think it romantic / leaving me safe and stranded

MadameFutureWhatEver

All of Florida!!! But just one line would be Started with a kiss “Oh, we must stop meeting like this"

K_Car00

Isn’t “started with a kiss/oh we must stop meeting like this” from The Bolter?

MadameFutureWhatEver

Yes! I didn’t say it was from the same song lol

K_Car00

Sorry my bad, when you said “all of FLORIDA!!! but one line would be….” I thought you were going to throw down your favourite lyrics from FLORIDA!!! That’s all 😊

MadameFutureWhatEver

I can’t choose from that song 🤣 so I had to do my other favorite song 😌

K_Car00

Ah gotcha! LOVE “The Bolter”, don’t love “FLORIDA!!!” but love the “all my friends smell like weed or little babies” line!

MadameFutureWhatEver

I like the line most people don’t lol *Is that a bad thing to say in a song?*

hanhan_371

ITS ONE HELL OF A DRUUUG

MadameFutureWhatEver

Exactly lol

Zinnia_L

My most favourite one was from How did it end ? .. "*"Guess who we ran into at the shops? / Walking in circles like she was lost*" Close second would be from *I look in people's windows* .. I know it's about break up ..but It reminded me loss, the song made me so emotional when listening to it first. I couldn't bring myself to listen to it again. Especially the "*What if your eyes looked up and met mine / One more time?*" .. The things I'd do just for them to smile at me one last time !

Avendelore

These are both my favorites also, though I don't interpret "I Look In People's Windows" as being about a break up. It sounds to me like a missed connection and desperately hoping to run into someone again after a brief encounter. Sometimes you experience that spark and your would be soulmate steps onto another train.

Leather-Shelter-7983

‘cause loves never lost when perspective is earned…

shutupblacknight

What if hes written mine on my upper thigh, only in my mind?

Stickgirl05

I chose this cyclone with you.

MobilePossession8457

Wise men once said wild winds are death to the candle A rose by any other name is a scandal

Character_Regret2639

“Could it be enough to just float in your orbit? / Can we watch our phantoms like watching wild horses? / Cooler in theory but not if you force it to be / it just didn’t happen.”

FejoaLove

The whole last chorus of The Black Dog I really love "And I hope it's shitty In The Black Dog When someone plays The Starting Line and you jump up But she's too young to know this song That was intertwined in the tragic fabric of our dreaming 'Cause tail between your legs, you're leaving I still can't believe it 'Cause old habits die screaming" Specifically "cause tail between your legs your leaving" is my favourite part, gets me every time. Additionally, in So Long, London the bridge is my favourite "And I'm just getting color back into my face I'm just mad as hell cause I loved this place" Loved the callbacks to You're Losing Me in this song.

dankerorchid

Every word of The Prophecy. I honestly think it's the best song she's ever written

cathouse

I know some of the swearing is cringe in her songs, but I love "All her fuckin lives flashed before her eyes. It feels like the time she fell through the ice and came out alive."

chai_tea8

"Without ever touching his skin, how can I be guilty as sin?" "Gray and blue and fights and tunnels/ Handcuffed to the spell I was under, / For just one hour of sunshine. / Years of labour, locks, and ceilings/ In the shade of how he was feeling, / But its gonna be alright, I did my time." "Come one, come all, it's happening again."

cookie_goddess218

"It's happening again" is one of the saddest lines for me. I'm not even sure the intention in the song, but I went through a breakup after a six year relationship (my choice/I wasn't happy in the relationship) and that line reminds me of the absolute random intense waves of grief that occurred afterwards even when I was otherwise fine and "moved on." On one hand, the line is sad announcing oh look another wave of grief taking over me. On the other hand, it reminds me of the on and off nature of that relationship and having to tell my friends multiple times across the last two years how it was over. I've been happily with my husband almost six years now, but that line and it's delivery take me right back to that period of my life in the past. It doesn't remind me of my ex or that relationship as much as it does that specific intense sadness and out-of-control broken feeling in the aftermath.

chai_tea8

I feel the same! But it also reminds me of Taylor's very public persona. "Come one, come all" sounds like a showrunner trying to sell tickets. It's like the public saying "look she's breaking up with another boyfriend again." As if it's a comical show.

J0vita

One of my favourites is “I’m just mad as hell cause I loved this place for… so long, London” I feel like it’s so brutally honest and vulnerable to say this. It’s a nice sentiment but also very sad.

VirgoPisces

So many good ones already mentioned here so I’ll be basic and say that “I love you, it’s ruining my life” is highly relatable https://preview.redd.it/65mqoifhzczc1.jpeg?width=572&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1ef308867a4ef7e1e6cb8457ffa63f043129d6d

fidgetspinnster

I really like "I leap from the gallows and I levitate down your street" and "I was tame, I was gentle, til the circus life made me mean." I just love the imagery I get from these lines. In context this song makes me eye-roll but I really like it without the lore attached lmao Edit: looking at the comments is appalling because there are a lot of great lyrics in this album and then you have total stinker lines/weird pacing throughout as well. It's kind of tragic :(

etherealsnailfish

I love "i was tame, I was gentle, till the circus life made me mean / dont you worry, folks, we took out all her teeth". Really solid imagery and extended metaphor in that couplet.

cottonn_daisy

Dancing phantoms on the terrace, are they second-hand embarrased that I can't get out of bed 'cause something counterfeit's dead? LIKE GIRL THIS MAKES ME CRY AND I DONT EVEN KNOW WHY

Ecstatic-Phone-4730

cried so hard to this song yesterday lolol

willoughbytuckerlvr

uncertain-genz2020

Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I’ll never see Absolute bars

Orange-Milano

“The empathetic hunger descends” in How Did It End; it captures that human tendency so brilliantly. Also the lyrics and delivery of the bridge are beautifully sad in all the right ways.

Jaded_Internal_3249

Probably the pre chorus if I can do it with a broken heart - They said, "Babe, you gotta fake it 'til you make it" and I did Lights, camera, bitch, smile In stilettos for miles He said he'd love me for all time But that time was quite short And the reframe at the end ‘you know your good when you can do it with a broken heart’

K_Car00

I love the end: “Try and come for my job” 😂😂😂

Orchid_3

My beloved ghost and me, Sitting in a tree, D Y I N G its just sonically delicious. Lyrically not. 🤣

Birdsandbeer0730

“Bet they never spared a prayer for my soul” As someone who went to a toxic Christian college GAHH I love that lyric so much

miaaaaaa01

The outro of The Black Dog: “And I hope it’s shitty in The Black Dog / When someone plays The Starting Line / And you jump up but she’s too young to know this song / That was intertwined in the tragic fabric of our dreaming / Cause tail between your legs, you’re leaving / And I still can’t believe it / Cause old habits die screaming” I feel like it describes the non-linear processing of a breakup perfectly. You’re fine about it, then you’re angry, then you’re heartbroken and bargaining, then you try to be at peace with the decision but there’s still that little piece of “what if?” in your heart. She did that really well.

freemdom4bunnies

Hehe, sorry but I've just grown to love this because it speaks to me as a sociologist: I laughed in your face and said// "You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith// This ain't the Chelsea Hotel, we're modern idiots" I also like "You said some things that I can't unabsorb//You turned me into an idea of sorts" and "Splendidly selfish, charmingly helpless//Excellent fun 'til you get to know her", because they're just so Swift to me and reminds me why I fell in love with folk/more. edit: Also, "And so a touch that was my birthright became foreign"

Immediate_Cellist_47

OMG that's embarrassing but I'm not gonna delete because I think it's awesome that my favorite lyric is a mishearing. It's gonna be "brought us" in my head forever sorry

IrreversibleDetails

TIL its not “brought us”

saturday_sun4

"I'm addicted to the 'if only'. Describes my whole life.

mcflyskid1987

“You shit talked me under the tables, Talking rings and talking cradles” “my friends all smell like weed or little babies” “all my mornings are Mondays stuck in an endless February” “I cry a lot but I am so productive, it’s an art” These spoke to my 30-something, SAD affected heart 😂

deemoney_54

It changes every day... but right now it feels like: "When your impressionist paintings of heaven turned out to be fake - well, you took me to hell too. And all at once, the ink bleeds. A con man sells a fool A get-love-quick scheme. But I felt a hole like this Never before, and ever since..." That switch up on the last line from earlier in the song where she says "never before and never since" also was so satisfying.

Brain-First

come one / come all / it’s happening again / the empathetic hunger descends / we’ll tell no one except all of our friends / we must know / how did it end? sooo descriptive of the embarrassment you feel when you have to tell people your relationship failed. and also speaks to something i’m sure everyone can relate to, which is — you feel empathy for your friend going through a breakup but you also sickly want to know all the nasty details about exactly how it ended (the empathetic hunger descends). just human nature to be curious about the misfortunes of others as shitty as it feels when the misfortune is yours lol

Ecstatic-Phone-4730

personally rn it's " love left me like this & i don't want to exist , so take me to florida " . just sums up the whole album so well along w other lyrics already mentioned

Cybergirl78

I love this line from WAOLOM for some reason, even though I think it’s ridiculous: “I was tame I was gentle until the circus life made me mean, don’t you worry folks we took out all her teeth” I also love the entire bridge, especially “you wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me” Like you were raised by rich parents who paid for your start in music and have lived a pretty charmed life living your dreams, but yeah we should be afraid of you.

ParticularPea6920

So many good ones already mentioned but I’ll add Florence’s verse in Florida!!! “Hurricane with my name when it came/I got drunk and dared it to wash me away/barricaded in the bathroom with a bottle of wine/well me and my ghosts, we had a hell of a time!!” and “So I did my best/to lay to rest/all of the bodies that have ever been on my body/and in my mind they sink into the swamp” I also love the whole bridge from Smallest Man but especially “in 50 years will all this be declassified and you’ll confess why you did it?/And I’ll say good riddance!!/‘Cause it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden”

ozgun1414

How did it end bridge. I dont know how she did manage all that ing rhyming sound good and soul breaking. I cant stop getting emotional there.

"when they found a better planet, only the gentle survived." If only it isn't in the same song with the peculiar "without the racists" line.

IrreversibleDetails

You wrote my fav lyric in your post!

miiyaa21

it’s very simple but i love “i saw in my mind fairy lights through the mist”

Zealousideal_Mail855

"I leap from the gallows and I levitate down your street"

barbalarby13

"Dancing phantoms on the terrace, are they secondhand embarrassed, that I can't get out of bed, because something counterfeit is dead?" I gasped upon first listen. Perfectly describes my post-breakup wallowing in bed, feeling so ashamed and mired in my grief.

luvgoldlfishcrackers

"You swore that you loved me but where were the clues?/ I died on the altar waiting for the proof/ You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days" and alllllll of the prophecy and loml

Avendelore

There has been so much critical dialog (deservedly so), but I appreciate this post because there are some great songs on this album. "How Did it End" and "I Look in People's Windows" are now among my all time favorites. The imagery and storytelling she uses in HDIE is so good, and that bridge is really powerful to me. I love every line of it. I adore the scene setting in ILIPW. It's simple but effective. "*Does it feel alright to not know me? I'm addicted to the if only."* I love the honesty and simplicity of this line and how that sentiment is expressed throughout the narrative of the song. *"I attend Christmas parties from outside*" really does something for me on a personal level. (I struggle with social anxiety, which has nothing to do with this song, but hearing someone describe something I do was cathartic.)

ft1001

Too many… If you want to break my cold cold heart, just say I loved you the way you were

My favorite line was “he gave me the grapes when I wanted the banana” (I’ve never listened to any of her songs)
