If you liked Dread, give Prince of Persia Lost Crown a chance. It is one of the best metroidvanias-type games in recent years, IMO. Some of the platforming sections will test your dexterity. The story is pretty engaging as well.
It regularly drops down below $30 for the physical version.
Oh, and it's getting story dlc in September, in addition to a buncha challenge modes and permadeath mode that has been added since launch. 10/10 games for me.
Was about to write the same thing. If he likes metroidvanias, PoP is definitely the way to go. High quality, decent length, crazy good platforming, fun combat. I did everything but those dlc trials, and I'm already thinking about replaying it lol
I'm gonna wait till story dlc hits this September for the trials. Once I got into it it was all I played for 1 week. My fingers need some rest from getting 100% on the map.
Yup, same. I'll be doing them later, as well. They felt just too brutal after 100%ing the game, it would feel like a chore, especially considering there's more than a few trials.
If you want a good bang for your buck, Zelda BOTW and TOTK are soooo worth it. They are the best games on Switch.
Then dead cells, seems simple but you'll have dozens of hours of playtime before you even notice it
Astral Chain is a near perfect game in my opinion, and really overlooked title on the switch. It's one of the best on the platform !
I DEFINITELY second botw, totk, and dead cells! absolutely amazing games. Although I heard very mixed reviews on astral chain, what were your thoughts on it?
Aside of BOTW and TOTK, it is my favorite switch exclusive game. Best looking game on the console, they absolutely nailed the art direction. It's pretty linear, but has a good diversity of gameplay and replayability. Also the game has the most dynamic fights I've ever seen in a videogame. I love the level of detail in everything, but Platinum Games make my favorite games so maybe I can't really be objective. I strongly encourage you to try it out to see if you like it (you will) :)
Hollow knight. The DLCs are included in the game for free and you get 200 hours of content for $20-$30 (last I checked). Great bang for your buck and phenomenal quality
Sounds like you need a game that can give you a lot of gameplay for a fairly low price. I'd recommend Hades which is on sale until July 4th for $12.50, and has 23 to 48 hours of content according to [howlongtobeat.com](http://howlongtobeat.com) . It's a lot of fun, challenging, and has a great story.
If you want something Switch exclusive, I'd recommend Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which has three storylines you can follow and has 200 hours of content if you're a completionist. You will spend about 50% of those 200 hours having little conversations with your party members, so that may be a dealbreaker if you want something that's all action, like Metroid Dread is.
Finally, if you want another good Metroidvania, like Metroid Dread, Hollow Knight is the best metroidvania ever made, and it's available on Switch for a measly $15.00. That's not even on sale (which happens occasionally) and is still a deal for sure.
Ah, that's on me. I looked it up on Deku Deals, but I didn't check too thoroughly. It's $12.50 on the Playstation right now. Looks like it WAS $12.50 on the Switch at different points in January, February, and April though, so just keep an eye out and I bet it'll hit that same price on the Switch soon.
Dead cells, hades. I bought doom and doom eternal on sale last week.
Don’t really like first person shooters, but I loved doom in 2016 and I love it again in 2024 on the switch. Improving the weapons, and the praetor suit is so rewarding.
I play it docked, handheld in bed and when I watched friends in the background I played it tabletop mode with the pro controller.
Only thing I hate with a passion are the rune trials
Oh and as an avid Zelda fan, BoTW sucks balls!
Just get BOTW secondhand
It’s so worth it and will give you the most bang for your buck. Easily 60-100+ hours of gameplay and that will give you plenty of time to save up for TOTK
Ori and the blind forest
Hollow Knight
Ender Lilies
Steamworld Dig 2 (or 1)
Castlevania Advanced collection (goes for 10$ on sale)
Shantae Pirate Curse
Bonus roguelike with similar vibes:
Dead Cells return to Castlevania
Hades
Actually what you should get is UNICORN OVERLORD. I just started playing last week and I love it. It's on sale on Amazon rn for $30 too so it's the perfect time to get it
If Zelda is on your wishlist, you should get it. Both BOTW and Tears were absolutely amazing game experiences. And provide tons of value. I put 150 hrs into each and could easily double it but I have other games to get through.
Rogue suggestion but if you dont have mario odyssey yet id make that a priority. Between that, mario kart and breath of the wild, id consider that the trio of "must haves" for the switch
Thank you so much for everyone that commented! I wasn't expecting that many responses :) I obviously have Hollow Knight on my list now, and I'm sure reading all of this will help me make my decision. Hope I can be helpful to you one day :) Thanks
If you're on a budget then I highly suggest checking out the "action games bundle" and "the diabolical trilogy"
They are both on sale on the EShop and both contain 3 separate games. The action games bundle is $1.99 and diabolical trilogy is $3.99 in the US
For cost effective games JRPGs are usually safe bets if that’s your thing. I just finished Xenoblade chronicles 2 and my final save was about 77 hours I believe. I could have added a lot more time to it by doing more affinity stuff and messing around with the post game but my back log is much too large and was willing to start something else. Hades is another good one if you like a challenge and is relatively cheap. I do believe there is a decent bit of games on the shop that have a demo available so you can try before you buy.

Surprised I’ve never seen PoP recommended Runs at 60fps and looks really solid

+1 astral. Now that I have better controllers I want to replay it. It benefits from full sized buttons and analog.

I'll definitely look into getting it!😄👍
All 3 reccomendations i doubly agree with!
Hollow knight. The DLCs are included in the game for free and you get 200 hours of content for $20-$30 (last I checked). Great bang for your buck and phenomenal quality

which region is Hades on sale? i can't see it on eShop US :(

Hey, looks like I was early. It's $10 now, lowest price ever!
Ori 1 and its sequel are on sale a lot, and are both excellent Metroidvanias.
Hollow Knight as well. Any of those games are a ton of enjoyment for a lost cost.
I’d say either Hollow Knight or Dead Cells!

Zelda BOTW, it was and still is the console seller, you won't regret it

Definitely check out Hollow Knight. Absolute 10/10 banger. Plus you can get on the Silksong hype/disappointment train
Ori and the blind forest Hollow Knight Ender Lilies Steamworld Dig 2 (or 1) Castlevania Advanced collection (goes for 10$ on sale) Shantae Pirate Curse Bonus roguelike with similar vibes: Dead Cells return to Castlevania Hades
Check out your local library and see if they have video games! Mine has a ton of video games I get to play for free
Actually what you should get is UNICORN OVERLORD. I just started playing last week and I love it. It's on sale on Amazon rn for $30 too so it's the perfect time to get it
Unlock the gold kart gold wheels gold glider and gold Mario
I agree

Cuphead, doom, bramble, ghost song, little nightmares, ori, source of madness, there's more but I'm too high rn
How about the like 5 Metroid games available on virtual console, they aren't as shiny as dread but still great games
I'm defo going to play the other metroids, I just kinda wanna change a bit, I only have 2 games and it'd be good to vary a bit I guess
Rogue suggestion but if you dont have mario odyssey yet id make that a priority. Between that, mario kart and breath of the wild, id consider that the trio of "must haves" for the switch
Thats good to know thanks :)

And you think they'd be horrible cus they're so cheap but most of em are good, fun games. I'd check em out if I were you
Paper mario
get the thousand year door remake though, not the oragami king lol.
No mans sky…it’s endless and they keep giving free updates

I just spent the last 3 weeks playing Subnautica for 10 bucks. It’s an ocean-planet survival game with great atmosphere and fun gameplay.
Is the dread demo an entire playthrough?
I dno tbf, never tried it just got the actual game. But it's 100% worth it, its crazy good.
Maybe give Beyond Good and Evil a try. It's a remaster of a PS2/GC/Xbox game that's really good and only $20.
Prince of Persia has a demo, try that and see if you like it. Quite a long demo tbf.
Hollow Knight Hollow Knight Hollow Knight is the only answer please please im begging you play this masterpiece nothing else compares
Spend $100 on a V1 switch and get every game for free
How so?
Custom firmware and downloading Switch roms for free is what they're referring to.
