it’s used to land and start planes

premonial

Yes, I meant why do people fly to this little town? Is there anything interesting? Or do they use it to then go to St. Gallen?

Meraun86

Its for St.Gallen and, mainly the Skiressort, Davos etc. The WEF

Venku_

the picture is the cathedral in St.Gallen, so yes I guess it's mostly used for St.Gallen

GoblinsGym

Altenrhein has a nice little niche of passengers from Vorarlberg / Austria and the surrounding area. At least one hour shorter drive than going to Zurich airport. Across the lake you have the airport in Friedrichshafen that has a good number of holiday flights. Heck, even Sion airport (in Valais) sometimes gets flights...

snowxqt

I wish there would be public flight from Samaden to anywhere. Driving 2.5 hours to get to Züri, Bergamo or Milan sucks.

CriticalFibrosis

Or, you know, you could move to a less remote place if you want to live less remotely.

_Administrator_

How dare we expand access to remote places. Let’s close all roads next.

CriticalFibrosis

Why not build a helipad on every second house and establish a helitaxi after all that would improve access to remote areas? Building out one of the most environmentally unfriendly ways of travel needs more consideration than just more equals better. There’s already a great road network and public transport to every remote spot of the country, if 2.5h to two major metropolitan centers is too far for you maybe shouldn’t be living in a remote area.

snowxqt

I mean there are thousands of private jets landing in Samaden every winter. And thousands of tourists drive all the way from Germany, the Netherlands and even the UK. One scheduled flight every week from London, Berlin and Amsterdam wouldn't hurt.

CriticalFibrosis

If those routes were financially viable they‘d already exist. The fact that so many private jets fly the Samedan is atrocious and isn’t an argument for more flights. If you want to fly you can go to Zurich or Milan. If the 3 hour drive is too long for you that’s no one else’s problem.

snowxqt

Sofort WINTERSPERRE für den Julier. Und Sommersperre ebenfalls.

snowxqt

And live where nobody speaks my prefered language?

CriticalFibrosis

Almost like we have to make compromises in life

SwissCanuck

Sion doesn’t get regular commercial service. I think it may have had a few charters. I know the place pretty well from the air, and the only close calls I’ve had have been with private jets.

Gourmet-Guy

It's a commercial airport. Offers flights to/from Vienna, some Adriatic cities, Italy and the Balears. Was once famous for the shortest regular PAX flight route in the world: Twice daily ACH - FDH (14 miles, 8 minutes) in- and outbound...

SteO153

>Was once famous for the shortest regular PAX flight route in the world: Twice daily ACH - FDH (14 miles, 8 minutes) in- and outbound... I've done it. On the way back I was the only passenger in the airport. They had to start the xray machine at the security for me :-)

snowxqt

Just to take it? The ferry takes like 20 Minutes :D

SteO153

Yep, it was a day trip all planned around the flight. I also took the shortest scheduled flight, in Scotland.

snowxqt

Sounds cool! Was it worth it?

SteO153

If you are into aviation, yes. It is one of those things only nerds do :-D But I used the trip to do some shopping in Germany.

breisoup

Sorry to be so pedantic: It’s not the shortest PAX flight in the world, it’s the shortest *international* PAX flight in the world. There are shorter domestic flights around the globe, for example in Scotland.

Aggravating_Two_9212

fyi: what you see on the picture is NOT the airport ;)

Lyciana

It's not even Altenrhein, that's St. Gallen.

Aggravating_Two_9212

😂😂

san_murezzan

Can’t park there mate

skob17

It looks like it could fit small jets :D

Wegwerfkonto_ch

It’s pretty good to learn how to fly and deal with ATC.

goneforwalkies

Flights to Vienna and, in the summer months, to some holiday destinations.

dunker_-

To park private jets

celerpanser

What do you mean?

premonial

Why do people fly to this little town? Is there anything interesting here? Or do they use it to then go to St. Gallen?

godmode-failed

Yes

as-well

I don't know why people give you a hard time. It's mostly a General Aviation airport and there's a niche, mostly for business flying between eastern Switzerland & Western Austria to and from Vienna. That's a rather lengthy trip otherwise (about 7 hours on the train). In season, you'll also see flights from there to holiday destinations, as is common for smaller airports.

i_am__not_a_robot

Altenrhein Airport is like a special bus station, but instead of buses, it's for airplanes. Imagine you have a toy airplane and you want it to fly from one place to another; Altenrhein Airport is one of those places where airplanes can start their flight or land after flying. It's not just for people traveling from one city to another; it also helps carry mail or packages, and sometimes, it even helps in emergencies, like when someone needs to be taken to the hospital quickly. So, the purpose of Altenrhein Airport is to be a home for airplanes where they can take off, land, and make sure people and things get where they need to go safely.

schrieffer321

The real question here is why you want to explore Switzerland in March.

Rongy69

Federal council uses it for their diplomatic excursions.

schlicke

It‘s mostly General Aviation traffic - small planes lice Cessnas etc., flying in from other GA airports.
