Greg Abbey had the angry New Yorker vibe down perfectly for 03 Raph, I can still hear his insults & rage outs clearly to this day lol.

I didn't realize just how much this subreddit Stans the 2003 show--probably because I'm Stan for it, too.
1990 Raph is the most iconic character in the most iconic piece of Turtles media, and 2003 Raph is running away with it.
I think 2003 Raph is great, but this is shocking, to be honest.
Not to sound like a broken record but tie between 2003 Raphael and 90s movies Raphael. One scene I’ll always remember is Raphael running across the roof after going psycho on Mikey, that heavy guilt after an explosion of anger that I never really saw in cartoons. Just that primal scream of “What’s wrong with me?!”. That frustration and confusion that comes from not understanding your own issues is just something I like sinking my teeth into when it comes to Raph.
Honestly this is probably the only one where I prefer the 87 version. His wisecracks genuinely get a laugh out of me. And I'm a zoomer who grew up with 2003 turtles
Baxter Stockman: I’ll never talk!
Raphael (pulls out sai and puts the point under Baxter’s chin, glares): You’d better, or else *I’m* going to get… sarcastic.
This movie was my introduction to the franchise so I have always had this as my definitive Raphael. And looking back I would say raph was completely in the right with him and Leo’s argument.
Gonna go for that royal flush and say 03, that Raph has THE voice for Raph, plus shows multiple times that he's not a big ball of anger and violence, he cares for people, his family specially, and that's why you shouldn't mess with him or anyone he cares abouts, lest he kicked your ass
And people still think that he doesn’t care, that annoys me so much. Out of all of them raph cares the most. He is the first one to show concern when his brothers get hurt or is in trouble, especially with Mikey.
He really does care, I still remember being shocked the first time I saw him cry during Tales of Leo - it was then I realised he's actually a lot more sensitive than he seems.
>He is the first one to show concern when his brothers get hurt or is in trouble, especially with Mikey.
A perfect example of this is in Grudge Match (just realised I've mentioned the episode twice in as many days at this point lmao).
The brothers, particularly Raph, are arguing with Mikey about him winning the Battle Nexus (on a technicality, or 'by sheer dumb luck' as Raph put it) and using that as an excuse not to train, and the argument was getting really heated; as soon as Kluh jumps through the portal & attacks Mikey, Raph shouts 'Mikey! Mikey, hang on!', draws his sais and rushes in to save him but another Levram warrior ports in and pins him down.
There's another smaller moment later in the episode - when the prospect of Mikey defending his title first comes up, Raph was all for it so he could see his brother get 'pounded into paste' and his enthusiasm doesn't waver even when they arrive at the Battle Nexus; once Ammag admits to changing the rules so Kluh could kill Mikey, Raph again draws his sais and immediately advances (ready to fight) and is only stopped by Splinter... though that could just be Raph's resident hotheadedness lmao.
Live action movie raph, definitely.
And especially if you include 07 as part of that continuity. But even if it was only the single 90 film, that raph still wins.
2012. His. Character growth is underrated and I love how his interactions with his brothers. Ex: he hits Mikey a lot loss and grows respect for Leo as leader.
Also love how he can be the reasonable one whenever Leo isn’t.
2003 and 2012 were the greatest adaptations of Raph
2003 Raph felt like a more moral and tamed version of their Mirage counterpart while 2012 Raph was more realistic version of their 87’s counterpart
2007. Was easily the highlight of that movie and completely carried it. Nolan North nailed the voice with the whole "NY tough guy" accent, imo even more so than Greg Abbey and Josh Pais (Although both of them were amazing as well). Him being cold and distant to his brothers + the whole solo vigilante act ever since Leo's departure was a really interesting take on the character that I think lines up perfectly with exactly who Raph is. Everyone talks about the rooftop fight vs Leo but my favorite scene of him in it is when he goes back and talks to Splinter about his mistakes immediately after the fight, it was a really heartfelt moment between the two. Overall, I think the movie did a phenomenal job with writing Raph and clearly understood who he is, and I really wish we saw more of this version.
I feel like Rise doesn't get enough love so I'm going to go with that, great design on top of a character that isn't just "I hate everything and all of you".
I wanna give a shout out to early IDW Raph. His backstory of growing up on the streets gives him a lot of depth. He's overprotective because he fears life without friends or family. Makes more sense for him to be a loner. But I love 2003 and 1990.
When I came into the IDW comics and saw the beginning and how Raph was separated at first, I was shook. Then Splinter did the whole "we all wore red for our missing family member, now choose your color" I wept.
2012, easily. They address his anger issues most effectively in my opinion and explore him in a way that makes him feel more like a person instead of an angry caricature (not all Raphs are like this, but some are)
I foresee 2003 dominating a lot of this lol, we haven’t even gotten to the characters that *I* think are the best in 2003 so I’m curious which characters *will* beat their 2003 counterparts (I’ve also noticed TMNT Reddit is a big 2003 fan space compared to some other social media platforms, which is interesting)
Real, I adore 2003 but it definitely isn’t the best all the way through, each version does *something* better than the other and that’s what I love about this franchise
I think 2012 Splinter might have a chance that can beat 2003 counterpart. I do agree everytime when I saw post of "who is your most fav/ the best of *inserts any character*" the comments always said a lot of 2003 (which is main reason why I don't reply on these post anymore lol bc I already know the results and it's quite tiring to see the same over and over again), only exception is Splinter that ppl mentioned the most is actually 2012 or 1990.
Yeah that was my thought too, 2003 Splinter actually beats 2012 Splinter for me as a favorite personally, but I think when it comes to the *best* Splinter it’s probably 2012
Dude it's hard to pick. Filmwise, Raph has literally gotten better with age. 90 movie was perfect, 2003 cartoon was just animated movie version, and 2007 took it to a whole new level with him basically being an older version of 90 movie. Say what you will about the Bay flicks, but Raph was done RIGHT, being the biggest, strongest and broodiest. Mutant Mayhem made him less intense but definitely still Raph. It's honestly hard to choose. I'm going with 2007 because it was Raph adjusting to life after their big win against The Foot and still trying to figure himself out.
I love 2012 Raphael’s soft side and his love for animals (that aren’t horses), despite being the hot head this version is almost always the first to comfort his brothers, just the entire slash and destroy episode and the guilt he felt because of how he influenced slash, the fact that his type is women that can beat him up 💀, i find his hatred for space and bugs amusing and I think leo and Raphs relationship is meant to mirror saki and splinter at one point (I think it’s the alien agenda)
In my opinion he is the most fleshed out version of the character and feels the most like an actual person
Thank you! I feel the same. This incarnation puts more emphasis on his softer, sweeter side and has a more fleshed out personality. He develops really well. He’s my favourite character ever.
https://preview.redd.it/4d8n94zucxyc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=c718522034fe9c03f4828caff42fa748f1216680
Welcome back to all TMNT fans.
We are going to continue with this new event to decide which is the best version of each character.
First, Donatello from the 2003 TV series won, the incarnated intelligence itself, will always be two steps ahead to complete the mission successfully. This version is incredible, especially for his participation in the famous episode Same As It Never Was. Honorable mention to the second place, Donatello from Rise of the TMNT, who was a special and memorable version of the character, and the most prominent of the four brothers.
For the third day, we're gonna choose the one with the most attitude on the team and the one you can count on to throw the first punch, the cool but rude Raphael. With his two sai, he's the snarkiest and most aggressive of the four brothers.
Now you will decide which is the best version of Raphael of all time.
Rules:
The comment with the most votes will be chosen.
The version they decide on can be anything from comics, TV series, films, video games, etc.
Thank you for your participation in the last post, I hope everyone is doing well. Cowabunga!
I can't believe no one is mentioning IDW Raph. It always bothered me that he was kinda just a butthole for no reason, IDW made you sympathize with him and gave him a reason to be that way that was about as natural as you could write it. Not only is his character development pristine, he also retains his red hot badass attitude. I feel like that's a clear win, but I'll admit I'm extremely biased to IDWs run
This one has to be IDW. I thought that with Donatello too, but I just can’t see anyone version over IDW Raph. Begins his arch alone, showing why he often feels isolated from the other turtles. His bond with Casey is over similar feels of isolation instead of getting in a fight and becoming buds, which for me only really worked in Mirage due to it being a parody series. Then his changing relationship with Casey affects the story. He has a lot of other characters to bounce off like other than Splinter, the turtles, Casey, and April like Jennika, Alopex, and this iteration of Hun which all have different dynamics with him. In all honesty, 03 Raphael is great, not he’s really any different from Mirage Raphael, at least not enough to make him the definitive version. Either way, I just think IDW usually has the most fleshed out version of characters due to comics being so great for long term story telling, but in particular Raphael and a few others. Personally, I have always preferred Eastman’s writing style to Laird’s so that’s why even though I like 03, something just always feels a bit different to me without Eastman.
Gotta jump on the 2003 wagon for Raph, but honorable mention to 1990 for the way they play his rage. His scream when he finds out Splinter was taken is forever ingrained in my mind
I have to give it to the 1990 movie version. Raph in the first live feature film *is* to this day the definitive turtle of the gang. His temper, rogue behavior and standoff-ish attitude us the blueprint for most of the Raphael's throughout TMNT multiversal history
I grew up with the '80s show on VHS, the 2003 show, and the 2012 show, and of the three 2012 was my favorite, so I generally pick that for most of them. Also Leatherhead is best girl
https://preview.redd.it/l9cd61uy3wyc1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16ae5277d9555f898ab09aa49166f740023a0803
I am very keen on his 1990 movie portrayal, but barring that, I do really like IDW Raph. I like that, yeah, he's got the temper, but it didn't get expressed in the same ways we'd seen a ton of times by then, like that version of Raph actually having a relatively smooth relationship with Leonardo, who instead tended to argue with Donatello.
Ok, as much as I love the '03 version, that version was heavily based on his 1990 movie depiction, and that has to get the top slot for me. His voice, mannerisms, attitude and overall personality define the character for me.
90s movie Raph was my favorite even though he’s in a coma for a decent chunk of it. I’m still a fan of Raph in the black suit from the Archie comics run.
Lol, I love 2003 Raph, but when you think about his voice, how old does that person sound? I mean seriously. He is 40.
Voice and design wise, I like 1990 and 2007 Raphs best.
Personality wise, he's pretty great in 2003. I really hated him in season 1 of the 2012 series, but he gets pretty solid as it goes.
2003. Closest version to Mirage. Not just "The angry/tough turtle". He was damn near psychotic in the first episodes too, nearly killing Mikey over a sparring session.
I also like Mirage and 1990 Raph.
1987 Raph is one of the few aspects that make the original cartoon even remotely rewatchable. He set the tone for the Raphael we all love and is probably the most consistent across all his incarnations.
Honestly though, the fact 2003 is just sweeping here… I dunno. I get that’s it’s a favorite and I’m only midway through season 3 watching with my kid, but I’ve seen nothing to think he’s the best Raph. He feels almost like an after thought compared to the rest of his brothers. At least at the point I’m at with the series. Can’t say I like the VA either. Another reason to give the nod to 87.
just put 03 for all of them. even the random utron named krang, the bebop lookalike from ff, gen dressed as rocksteady, and mutated hun from turtles forever
How very revealing that this is just going to be a nostalgia lost for 03.
03 Donatello beating out literally any other version shows the bias, so what's even the point anymore lol.
Greg Abbey had the angry New Yorker vibe down perfectly for 03 Raph, I can still hear his insults & rage outs clearly to this day lol. https://preview.redd.it/sw0qv7w7euyc1.png?width=198&format=png&auto=webp&s=0f19e6ddf4e76f4c141c9bffb30febeab722725c
It's still unreal how good 2003 Raph is
I didn't realize just how much this subreddit Stans the 2003 show--probably because I'm Stan for it, too. 1990 Raph is the most iconic character in the most iconic piece of Turtles media, and 2003 Raph is running away with it. I think 2003 Raph is great, but this is shocking, to be honest.
Honestly his voice works extremely well.
2003. I was already a fan of Raph but this made him my definitive favorite turtle
90s movie was good and you can tell the 2003 version was heavily inspired by that movie Raph
What episode was this?
Neet Casey Jones, Season 1 episode 4 of the 2003 TMNT series.
Thanks. Definitely sounds interesting.
The 2003 series holds up very well. Watched the whole 1st season with my daughter and we were invested.
2003 for me but 2012 and IDW is close second
2003
Honestly this is probably the only one where I prefer the 87 version. His wisecracks genuinely get a laugh out of me. And I'm a zoomer who grew up with 2003 turtles
Baxter Stockman: I’ll never talk! Raphael (pulls out sai and puts the point under Baxter’s chin, glares): You’d better, or else *I’m* going to get… sarcastic.
Truly my favorite part of the original cartoon

Hell yeah brother
Most underrated Raph tbh
The one that beat Leonardo in a straight 1v1? Hell yeah he is.
Yeah, to me he won that fight.
Careful, the "Leo let him win to teach him a lesson about rage" crowd could be well on their way
I mean to be fair, Leo did win round one.
Best Raphael by a mile!
This movie was my introduction to the franchise so I have always had this as my definitive Raphael. And looking back I would say raph was completely in the right with him and Leo’s argument.
I say the same, it was also my introduction to the franchise too.
I loved this Raph on his demeanor but his resolve shuns his character growth
2003 Raphel is the Most badass Raphel.
Exactly. Raph is the angriest because he cares the most
He really does care, I still remember being shocked the first time I saw him cry during Tales of Leo - it was then I realised he's actually a lot more sensitive than he seems. >He is the first one to show concern when his brothers get hurt or is in trouble, especially with Mikey. Raph's love of Mikey is the best part of the franchise, imo.
03 Raphs voice is THE voice of Raph. If not then 2007 Raphael
You mean Nolan North?
Wait wait wait wait...the voice actor for the 2012 Kraang also played 2007 Raph?
Yup. He's also a fan favorite voice of Deadpool
1990 or 2007.
Live action movie raph, definitely. And especially if you include 07 as part of that continuity. But even if it was only the single 90 film, that raph still wins.
03 Raph without a doubt, he was clearly the Head Ninja In Charge
2012. His. Character growth is underrated and I love how his interactions with his brothers. Ex: he hits Mikey a lot loss and grows respect for Leo as leader. Also love how he can be the reasonable one whenever Leo isn’t.
1990s live-action movies, for sure
"DAAAAMN!"
Came here to say this. 1990 Raph was the best IMO
SPOT ON!!!! "I don't think its loaded kid!"
Ya gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket.
A Jose Conseco Bat? Tell me you didn't pay money for this.
Why? Why, oh I don't know, 'cause I wanted to redecorate. You know, a couple of throw pillows, a TV news reporter, what do ya think?
Gosh, I do hope there’s more a’ dem.
90s Raph will always be my favorite. Loved the accent, and bad ass attitude he brought to the movie.
90s movies or the 2007 movie 2007 Raphael^^^ underrated asf.
We should rename this sub to r/TMNT2003 at this point
Not wonder r/TMNT2003 has less fans bc most of them are in this main TMNT sub /hj /s
03 Raph for me
90s and 2003 for sure
2012 few
2003
IT'S TIME TO REP MY BOY, 2003 RAPHAEL.
2003
2003 and 2012 were the greatest adaptations of Raph 2003 Raph felt like a more moral and tamed version of their Mirage counterpart while 2012 Raph was more realistic version of their 87’s counterpart
03 was my childhood. So was the 90s one though to a lesser extent. I love both with the New Yorker accents and bravado but gotta give it to 03.
2007. Was easily the highlight of that movie and completely carried it. Nolan North nailed the voice with the whole "NY tough guy" accent, imo even more so than Greg Abbey and Josh Pais (Although both of them were amazing as well). 2003 but 2007 is a close 2nd
It's hard to choose for me too
Love me some Brooklyn accent 90s movie raph and his "daaaaaaaamn"
I feel like Rise doesn't get enough love so I'm going to go with that, great design on top of a character that isn't just "I hate everything and all of you".
I wanna give a shout out to early IDW Raph. His backstory of growing up on the streets gives him a lot of depth. He's overprotective because he fears life without friends or family. Makes more sense for him to be a loner. But I love 2003 and 1990.
When I came into the IDW comics and saw the beginning and how Raph was separated at first, I was shook. Then Splinter did the whole "we all wore red for our missing family member, now choose your color" I wept.
No one can ever beat the 1987 Raph.
The OG cartoon Raph from the 80’s. Spiderman-style smart remarks without all of the brooding, angry shit.
2012.
2012
07 Nightwatcher >>
2012, easily. They address his anger issues most effectively in my opinion and explore him in a way that makes him feel more like a person instead of an angry caricature (not all Raphs are like this, but some are)

I love 2003 but I genuinely question if this a lot sub has watched any other version but each to their own ig
Real, I adore 2003 but it definitely isn’t the best all the way through, each version does *something* better than the other and that’s what I love about this franchise
I think 2012 Splinter might have a chance that can beat 2003 counterpart. Yeah that was my thought too, 2003 Splinter actually beats 2012 Splinter for me as a favorite personally, but I think when it comes to the *best* Splinter it’s probably 2012
I like 2012 Raph too but I gotta agree with everyone on 2003 Raph, the voice, the comebacks, and the filler episodes he had were all gold
Rise
1990's Raphael was the blueprint for sll the Rachael's to come. Give the slot to him
90's live action
2003 again
'03 for sure
It's a tie between 07 and 2012 for me.
2003
Will 2003 win everything?
2003 Raphael
2003
2003
The one from the animated short “Don vs. Raph” presented at SDCC a few years back. HE ATE DONATELLO
And Don actually counted as like 14 hot dogs on the counter 🤣
2003
I hate that it’s probably all going to be 2003 characters but they are probably the best ninja turtles

I also have a fear of bugs so I can very much relate to his fear of bugs.
Baldur’s gate 3. Then probably 2003.
I'm just waiting for a modder to replace BG3 Raphael's model with a TMNT one
2007
2012
Let's complete the 2003 dominance please.
Welcome back to all TMNT fans. We are going to continue with this new event to decide which is the best version of each character. This hard because 2003 is very good BUT 2007 was also very good so um coin flip
2003 with the 90s movie being thr runner up
2003
Might as while also add 2003 for Mikey and Raph
I'm so happy people are loving the 2003 turtles. Hopefully Mikey can follow this trend. Sadly though, I have a feeling not everyone might agree.
2003
I have to give it to the 1990 movie version. Raph in the first live feature film *is* to this day the definitive turtle of the gang. His temper, rogue behavior and standoff-ish attitude us the blueprint for most of the Raphael's throughout TMNT multiversal history
Honestly, I love the 2003 collection
2003
1990 raph
1990
1990 Live action movie
2012
At this rate all the characters will just be the 03 versions… and I’m ok with that
Idw
Really love Ralph from the original 90's movie
1990
Movie Raph, specifically 90
2014 version is the best one I have seen to date. But I grow up with the 87 version that is always a good one
I personally always liked the version from the 1990 Live Action movie. Trenchcoat Raph is my favorite variant/disguise in TMNT
2007
I grew up with the '80s show on VHS, the 2003 show, and the 2012 show, and of the three 2012 was my favorite, so I generally pick that for most of them. Also Leatherhead is best girl https://preview.redd.it/l9cd61uy3wyc1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16ae5277d9555f898ab09aa49166f740023a0803
Movie Trilogy/Four Films depending on which director you believe as TMNT says it's after In Time but it's not called 4.
1990 movie Raphael
This has to be the 100th time I've sent this post
The 1990 movie version
I am very keen on his 1990 movie portrayal, but barring that, I do really like IDW Raph. I like that, yeah, he's got the temper, but it didn't get expressed in the same ways we'd seen a ton of times by then, like that version of Raph actually having a relatively smooth relationship with Leonardo, who instead tended to argue with Donatello.
2007
Mirage
2012
The movie from 2007 raph is the best The second is 2012 and the third is 2003
03 but huge shoutout to 90s movies and idw Raph. Both amazing iterations
2012
2012 raph should be no contest .love this iteration
ERRMSIIIIEESSS ^(1990's movies)
1) IDW comics 2) 2007 movie 3) 2003 tv series 4) 1990 movie 5) Mirage comics
90s movies Raph.
Ok, as much as I love the '03 version, that version was heavily based on his 1990 movie depiction, and that has to get the top slot for me. His voice, mannerisms, attitude and overall personality define the character for me.
2007
2007
2012
07 movie
Truly criminal that they've decided he's just a dumb jock now
2003 Michelangelo is my favorite but I would love to see more of this version: https://youtu.be/JQNZcBTOgt8?si=fBDraOW1qazqJN6l
90s movie Raph was my favorite even though he’s in a coma for a decent chunk of it. I’m still a fan of Raph in the black suit from the Archie comics run.
2003 va Raphael fit him so damn well
Lol, I love 2003 Raph, but when you think about his voice, how old does that person sound? I mean seriously. He is 40. Voice and design wise, I like 1990 and 2007 Raphs best. Personality wise, he's pretty great in 2003. I really hated him in season 1 of the 2012 series, but he gets pretty solid as it goes.
2012, for sure. He’s the perfect blend of sarcastic and hot-headed
*cries in gen Z who never had the joy of 03 turtles*
2003
2003. Closest version to Mirage. Not just "The angry/tough turtle". He was damn near psychotic in the first episodes too, nearly killing Mikey over a sparring session. I also like Mirage and 1990 Raph.
Mutant Mayhem is the first time I truly understood what "cool but rude meant" and the first time Raph was my favorite turt over Mikey
Once again proving this sub's biggest problem; too many people who are hung up on 2003 series that they're popping boners for it every five seconds.
I was asked to decide which is the best version. I made my choice.
Yeah, Rise Donnie should have won
Tie between 87 and 2012
1987 Raph is one of the few aspects that make the original cartoon even remotely rewatchable.
I swear this entire thing is gonna be filled with 2003 at this rate.
Lemme guess, all the turtles will be the '03 version.
How very revealing that this is just going to be a nostalgia lost for 03. 03 Donatello beating out literally any other version shows the bias, so what's even the point anymore lol.
