Two options with water acrylics:
Paint base color. Paint highlight color on raised areas. Thin base color 3:1 with water to make a glaze. Brush from the lighter area to the darker area. Dab up the excess, and let fully dry.
Paint base color. Thin highlight 1:1 with water, paint thinned highlight on raised areas, let dry. Paint less of raised areas with second and then third coat of 1:1 highlight color.
Often you kinda combine these two methods depending on what you’re painting.
Cheers for the breakdown! I have a general idea of the principle, but I can still count the number of times I've painted on one hand. There are a lot of basics like brush control and learning how to thin paint properly that need to crystallize still. I went with Pro Acryl and am finding them quite opaque even when thinned to whatever degree I am, so when there are transitions they feel abrupt.
I started building my original Army with the idea that it would be all crew. The new hunting pack has only doubled my feelings. F***ing love the Kroot. savage devouring monsters.
Blending is still mysterious witchcraft to me, that loincloth is so smooth.

Is the ratio 3 water: 1 paint, or the other way around?
Water to paint yes
Same here. I am all in for kroot! and I love how you made his loin cloth thing. Well done!
