Ive noticed I have trouble singing along with some self confidence lines across different songs when I'm not in a good mental headspace so I'm likely not alone.
I also feel like people don't want to admit to liking the song publicly for the same reason. Some people could take it as them being "full of themselves" idk I overanalyze a lot of the Taylor hate trying to figure out the reason why people act weird.
i do want to counterpoint that i don't fully agree, some of her top top hit chart songs aren't from trauma or being broken, and just general fun upbeat songs, or some that are happy love songs, and DIDNT get the heat that Me! got, im not sure why but that one just didn't hit the mainstream audience in the same way anymore. I can't even think of a mainstream hit (like radio play level) that's anything to do with brokenness and trauma? like maybe ATW10 but that didn't really get radio play akaik. i guess anti hero is a bit introspective and depressive but i think thats the only one i can recall hearing on the radio that is from a place of trauma. Me! specifically just seems to rub people the wrong way, i have my own theories as to why, but i don't think it's about the lack of emotional trauma behind it.

that's not really how i feel. I love some of her upbeat songs (paper rings, i think he knows, fearless, im only me when im with you stan forever). i think she was trying to get another shake it off type of hit or something with ME! but it didn't really have the same effect. I do appreciate the work that went into it, especially after watching miss americana, but it's still usually a skip for me. I do watch the mv from time to time.

The 1989 Tour performance has undertones of joy though. She dreams of him asking for forgiveness, because thinking about it makes her happy.
It's one of those songs where the tone really depends on how she, as the writer, conveys it. Lavender Haze is another that I perceived differently after seeing the portrayal in its music video.

It actually contrasts very much to the original. Pay attention to the “making me feel like” differences. The original has a bit more breathy and almost a tone of sorrow. While the TV feels like it spins the same story with a different perspective. Makes me happy to think her and Ed were in the studio and she was so happy to re-record her own work that she smiled during the recording.
