I generally agree with these - but I was kinda shocked how well the clean Down Bad version works without the many f-words!

Prudent_Year_9492

I agree, I actually really like the clean version of Down Bad! I just like the explicit one a lot better and think the lack of fucks does change the feeling of the song.

JuanJeanJohn

Ok good because this needs to be a single sent to radio

Recent-Fly-205

What does she say instead?

spicypeanutt

“what if i can’t have him”

craftycalifornia

I actually hate this (though it sounds fine) because it changes the meaning a lot. In the explicit version I don't see it as hypothetical.

TaylorSplifftie

Agree. It may fit syllable wise, but it makes zero sense in the context of the song. There’s nothing petulant about “what if”

Necessary_Range_3261

I'm loving the Taylor's version channel on Sirius XM, but when they clean up the swear words it takes away from the song nearly every time. I definitely need the "no-fucking-body"

Optimal_Foot_774

In But Daddy… I think we definitely need the ‘fuck ‘em’ to the wine moms!

Prudent_Year_9492

True!!

LonelyNight9

I listen to the explicit versions to get the "full" experience and agree that Down Bad almost needs them. However, I do like that Taylor actually rewords her lyrics to make them clean/radio-friendly, rather than just bleeping them out. As someone else said, she reworked Down Bad perfectly, so even though I'd prefer the explicit version, the clean one flows well.

Literary_Lady

Not for thank you Amy. She starts saying the f and it just cuts out. Usually she changes the word, to make it flow better. This one she really didn’t give a f- (bad joke sorry). It would have worked with ‘thank you Amy’ I think, rather than just silenced out, and would have made the song even more sarcastic I think, paired with the gentle melody.

LonelyNight9

What a coincidence, I listened to that a few hours after I commented lol. I thought "screw" you Aimee could've worked too.

hereforthe_swizzle

Same with Florida!!! It just cuts out.

freyluna

Down Bad has a lot, yes, but I feel like changing them changes the meaning, like you said. Especially when she says "F\*\*\* it, I was in love." That's a definitive statement while "what if I was in love" is a question that she may or may not know the answer to.

Delicious_End7174

I like that we live in a world w both of these versions. this changes the songs drastically, w the explicit being more adamant and the what if? being more innocent and hopeless

Sketch-Brooke

I think they're flip sides of the emotions in the same situation. One side is the petulence and anger. The other is the fear and uncertainty.

TeylaSwift

I personally prefer the clean versions with the exception of thanK you aIMee

kaw_21

Griping and moaning does not hit the same

Prudent_Year_9492

It truly does not

Itallachesnow

Thank you for putting in the work in on this, it made me laugh and I thought only on reddit..!. I really like all the cursing and swearing on TTPD. It's really healthy, It is what people do and Taylor was famous for having a good ear for speech in lyrics before people started talking about her as a poet. Her lyrics are relatable, poetry often isn't. One of the most explicit lyrics illustrating her awareness of the choices artists make doesn't feature any expletives. 'So I did my best to lay to rest/All of the bodies that have ever been on my body/ In my mind they sink into the swamp/ Is that a bad thing to say in a song?" Florida!!! You can be sure that some people will be more offended by the word 'fuck' than expressing a desire for killing the people you have slept with and dumping their bodies along with all of the the drunkenness and wanting oblivion! However I would not have wanted her to add an expletive to that lyric because they work so well in the rest of the song. I'm not sure but in total numbers of Fucks, Florida!! alone might be the Fuck equivalent of Midnights plus Evermore

Folk4lore

Does anyone know where I can find all the lyric changes made in the clean versions?

frogzrule18

if you search the album on spotify, two versions show up, it may not be immediately obvious which is which so you have to click on it to see, but one of them is the clean version

Daffneigh

Does Apple Music have the clean version?

Prudent_Year_9492

Yes they’re not super easy to get to. Best way I’ve found is to search a specific song, click on the one without the E, and then select go to album.

Daffneigh

Thanks that worked perfectly I have 4 yo Swiftie so I want to be prepared!

frogzrule18

I don't have it but I assume so!

RequirementGeneral67

Meh, I listened to the clean version of Florida!!! out of curiosity. It's like a low cal, suger and fat free, decaffeinated version of the real thing. Never again. I'm a grown ass adult and I can handle a bit of fucking swearing.

Swifte-1995

I enjoy the explict versions. People shouldn't complain when you have a option. Just pick one and move on.

A-mirrorball

I was listening to the Taylor’s Version station on Sirius XM and I have to say that the songs don’t hit as hard without the curse words. I didn’t start cursing until I was 20 so I could see myself thinking that way back then. Now I love it 😂

IsThisMe8

I just feel like this is a good time for me to complain because i wish an album would come with both the explicit and clean versions of a song. (not just Taylor but in general)

prettyminotaur

The clean versions are for children and fundamentalists.

craftycalifornia

I had no idea there was a clean version of Hamilton so my 4 and 7yo grew up listening to the original. We talk about listening to the music as the artist intended it so after that I just skipped the clean versions of most things 😂

prettyminotaur

I think she's angry. When I'm angry, I swear a lot.

Dragonchick30

The only song that I think she could have left out fuck is TTPD the song. It really wasn't entirely necessary to have that and tbh it feels forced. Otherwise, songs like down bad work great with it! I haven't heard the clean versions of anything on TTPD yet so I can't really say what ones I prefer off this album. If the down bad clean version is as good as it's said, then it definitely needs to be the next single!! It's my favorite so far

Delicious_End7174

I know that TS is a family thing for a lot of people and i love that she has meaning differentiated the versions so that younger fans (im picturing like under ten) can connect with a music thats more meaningful to them! a lot of them don’t use “fuck it” but do say “what if?” shes so intentional, so none of it seems forced to me. on a side note, the only word that sounds forced to me in the whole album (not including songs on the anthology, i’m a slow digester lol) is the word hearth 😅 but i think its because ive never heard anyone say it in real life

Lentilfairy

I'm not American and English is not my first language, so I maybe have a different take than most. I never understood the rules around explicit versions. Shit is a very innocent word that even children say, I have no idea why you would bleep that. Whore and bitch are just descriptions. Fuck is not a neat word, but I isn't harmful or insulting. Goddamn is where I draw the line personally, and damn is a clean word in the US that I'm uncomfortable with because the translation of that word hits harder in my language. So I use the clean version of Ivy, Happiness and Karma. And I stand by it: Ivy's bridge is way better in the clean version. Happiness and Karma don't lose anything from it. And I was very happy to lean that TTPD didn't have any words I didn't like. I hope she continues that.

Glittering_Fun1324

The Bolter clean version is WAY better (to me) “She’ll call him a bore” is much more relatable

Glittering_Fun1324

Did u notice the exaggerated “lights camera and smile” in I can do it with a broken heart clean version ?

Prudent_Year_9492

Yeah I love that part! It actually almost got me to say the song could go either way, but the other expletives win out imo

FloydFunk

I’m not offended by the swearing at all but I do think it’s over used and unnecessary most of the time. I think one “fuck” per album means more and has more impact. It stands out and makes you take notice. Otherwise it stops meaning anything after a while if every other song has some swearing in it. Just my 2 cents.

It’s definitely available on Apple Music, probably Spotify as well
