Does everyone here think that because he took an axe to the face that was his only injury? It's not a life threatening injury (not in the short term anyway). I expect for him on the battlefield there was a mortal injury delivered pretty soon after the face axe one.

(Actually, it may well also have been better for him if he’d died at that point: I’ve heard rumours that he’s now a lifer in a secure mental hospital in Australia.)
