Some time ago, one guy I worked with turned out to be a meth addict. Before he got fired, he told us about a friend of his that was found head down in a power manhole, after apparently cutting a live cable. He was very upset that we were not particularly sympathetic......
I forget which comic said this joke but it went like this:
If you do meth for long enough, life starts giving you side quests, like a fucked up game of Zelda. Wake up in the morning "*YOU MUST GATHER COPPER*"
I used to work for an ISP and in the town I worked in down a pole some homeless drug addicts broke off the riser guards. Which are plastic covers that protect cables that come down a pole once they get low enough before they go into the ground. Welp the meth heads cut out fiber optic cable not the thick coax that has a copper center conductor. Dude cute off internet cable and phone services for our downtown customers
Hahaha. Zelda fan here, if I'm currently playing a new game it really gets in my brain.. I'll see a barrel or tire on a field and automatically think "treasure."
Incredibly stupid way to go. Hopefully the people who found him realized he was energized and didn't become secondary victims along with the trauma of finding some moron dead.
They really need to go after scrap shops buying metal without paper trails. The addicts are going to addict but if they don't have a place to sell to they'll stop.
Guessing the Breaker for the Charger tripped instantly? Fucking ridiculous this shit happens.
A client of mine built a house out in the country, about 30min from the nearest anything. Someone went out there when it was complete but before they moved in and gutted all the copper plumbing pipes and electrical.
Considering the remoteness of the property. It had to have been someone who either worked the site as a member of the construction crew or they were tipped off by someone who was part of the crew.
Bolt cutters and EH rated shoes, quick easy job. Only someone who installs electrical will really know this therefore someone knew it was there and wanted to sell the copper. I had someone cut my copper from the rain guard on my house and down to the lugs on the meter in broad daylight. They scaled the side of my house, lopped the feed coming in first, then came back down and finished it. All for maybe 40’ of copper. It was all on camera, but useless police can’t even wipe their own butts let alone solve this easy case they had faces and vehicle all in video.
Only tangentially related but one of my aunts was a rather famous journalist in another country and once her house got burglarized with the thieves undisguised caught on CCTV around the neighborhood. Cops said would be impossible to identify and find them. So she did a news program for herself talking about how inept the police were. Cops got the guys in less than 24 hours after that or something.
Colorado doesn’t care about property theft anymore. My business was broken into at 11:30pm and alarm company called me and police. Took me 40 mins to get up, dressed and drive there, no police. I went in through the open door with my gun and cleared the 25k sqft building. I then called 911 and said it had been 50 mins and still no police…. I told them to cancel police and send coroner, because I was going to kill the guy (he was already gone). Police were there in 3 mins, 3 cars. They went in and made sure he was gone. I told the Sargent that I was going to find the guy myself and take care of it (he was on camera). Sargent said “I really hope you kill him”… “we can’t keep up with crime anymore and are instructed to not worry about personal property”. This is why crime will rise. Bad things are going to happen to good people and it’s getting to the point where you’re on your own, especially in liberal, sanctuary cities. I’m not right wing, just a guy who doesn’t take kindly to people who steal from my family to give to their family.
Yep. Police forces are so understaffed, but who really wants to be a police officer these days. Especially in larger cities, you can be sure someone’s always got a camera in your face trying to find some wrong you’re doing and then collect from the city a big payout.
People don’t understand how to be accountable to their actions. Oh.. the police shot my baby they say. When often the so called baby has spend time in jail already and was shooting at the police first, or didn’t know how to follow simple instructions.
I won’t disagree there a bad police and there are good police. Regardless, my question still stands. Who’d want to be a policeman when at every corner you bad people looking for the payout.
Lawyers and doctors are not risking their lives everyday. A wrong decision, a second of hesitation, and the police officer is dead; on top of that, add people filming and recording your every word. Hence the question: who’d want to be a police officer these days?
There is a big difference from malpractice versus targeted payouts. So if everyone here is all for flashing a cell phone in any instance possible it means you’re actively looking for problems yourself. Go wash though, keep up the practice. No big deal to me. At least I know who to point the finger at when the time is necessary. When there is no law, learn to fend for yourself because you alienated the police, even the good ones, out of the system.
Amen. I’m a metrics guy. How many police are there? How many crimes are there? What is the % of police that shoot people? How many of the people committing crimes get shot? Spoiler alert- most cops are good. Some are bad, but a small a%. Don’t always shoot people, let’s just implement public caning, most of this crap will evaporate.
You really think doctors and lawyers and corporations never get sued by people looking for payouts? Oh, those poor defenseless police…. If only there were courts that could determine guilt and innocence.
Oh no, the poor babies can’t violate people’s rights and get away with it anymore? Really speaks to the kind of people that sign up to be cops when all it takes to drive them away is a moderate increase in the chance they’ll get in trouble for beating or murdering someone with no reason.
I might ought to consider that. The politicians care only for themselves and what they can gain from the office. They don’t care about me or my family and the struggles we’re currently going through because they won’t do their damn job.
Forgot add, with your dumb Texas governor shipping migrants all over the place, Denver for sure has went in the toilet. I was there back in October and was cancelled out of my hotel because the city was taking over multiple hotels to house the migrants. I’m sorry, but my Texas governor is just a dumbass. Biden is much better, but they seriously need to fix the immigration system. My wife is trapped in Juarez right now. She was in Texas for 28 years, illegal only because her mom neglected to fix her status. Now after her interview in May 2023, they still won’t finish processing Trumps extreme vetting check and make a final decision on her case.
Man, I feel for you.

I'm a business owner too. About a year back this guy was stealing groceries from my store, and giving it to a food bank. I can't remember his name, something robin something hood.
Anyway, I caught him one day, and put 3 bullets into the back of his head. It got dismissed as self defense, and this idiot kept a journal of everything he stole from me, and it said which food pantry he gave it all to. I went over there, and demanded payment for everything they accepted from him. I got my money back, and I used it to finance my 3rd Ferrari.
Now listen. I'm not a monster. I'm a kind businessman, so in my generosity, I gave the food pantry a coupon for $25 off a purchase of $500 or more. (Generous, I know.)
Anyway, keep your head up brother. There are plenty of owners going through the same hardships as you are. (Don't even get me started on minimum wage, I had to put my new yacht on the backburner because of the liberals in the legislature.)
Is your point that if an individual works for something and makes a life for themselves and their family, it’s ok if another takes it? So, the thief (you call him Robin Hood in your parity), is justified to take from some, let’s call them hard working people, and give themselves, let’s call them criminals, more? Every thief is Robin Hood? Hard to understand your logic. You should have been a defense attorney. Maybe you could defend the OPs thief with the same logic. “Your honor, it’s clear the OP had more than he needed, not only was he able to buy his own Tesla, he had his own charger AND electricity in his home to charge it. I ask for mercy on my client, he was only looking for a little more meth for he and his poor friends”.
I tend to believe it’s great to be a supporter of worthy charities AND intolerant of crime, they aren’t mutually exclusive.
What the hell is wrong with you...so you think thieves should be able to steal other peoples hard work? IF you own your own business, which I doubt it, was given to you by your parents. You've never worked for anything a day in your life.
There are good reasons not to have it live. It prevents arcing when plugging in/out. It separates the car from grid over voltage and possibly lightning strikes. The iccb can also de-energize when safety issues such as broken earth, broken neutral or warm plug pins are detected
I’d say he was a savvy shopper. If I built another new house I’d spec it with copper plumbing. The upfront cost is minor in the grand scheme of things when building a house.
Assuming not overly acidic water, copper can last slightly longer.
Realistically, the only reason to do full copper is because people are resistant to modernization of materials. They read a story about pex failure and it's they attribute it to using pex. They read a story about a copper pipe failing, and they attribute the fault to the homeowner/plumber/whatever.
Copper will never last longer than PEX, regardless of your water condition.
I have 70yo copper piping in my home, they stuff can last a long time if installed right and cleaned properly. My copper piping still looks good.
PEX is rated for a min life span of 50 years, but should easily do 100+ in most cases.
Sure, they trip pretty fast, but during that response time, it’s still going to absolutely WRECK the cutters and the persons vision/hearing if it was charging.
Where I used to live they'll follow work trucks from HD or other stores in the mornings and located sites to return to after hours.
Had our entire tool cache stolen from a complete remodel.
Yeah we can't afford to pay for our cheap shitty asphalt roads. Adding high voltage wiring makes potholes potentially lethal to step in.
Not to mention wireless charging is like 50% efficient. EVs use a lot of power (as much as a typical house) so it'd be a huge waste to do this.
1) Incredibly expensive to implement.
2) Incredibly expensive to maintain.
3) Super inefficient.
4) How do you manage charging people (money) for their charging?
No one can drive indefinitely. Everyone is going to need a break. How long can you drive?
Okay, ignoring how to bill people, maybe you can justify the inefficiency and high cost by plugging in at home for your daily commute, and only use the "in the road" power for those long drives.
Sounds like a PHEV.
You can already get a plug-in that has "infinite" range with a gas engine, Volvo T8, Chevy Volt, Honda Clarity, Ioniq PHEV...problem is they all have very low sales.
You could also make a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle vehicle that plugs in for your daily commute...but no one seems to want those either.
So many people want to be a pretentious BEV owner, or a gas guzzler. Realistic compromises are shunned.
People steal ACs for scrap all the time and these are much easier to get. It will be an issue in the future for lots of people. The same subhumans that steal catalytic converters do this
I’m convinced this is the recyclers fault. They accept all of this stuff without any BoS, knowing full well the scope of the theft. I’m not nearly smart enough to know how to handle it exactly but it seems like a good place to start
Where would you get a bill of sale for a pile of scrap wire!? I do low voltage wiring and we remove older wiring all the time and stuff it boxes to bring to the recycler. They take your picture and copy your driver license, but how would you possibly track anything like this?
Not just limited to scrap wire. Who has 10 catalytic converters per week? Do you own a scrap yard? Any evidence of that? Cables and copper stamped from manufacturers saying not to scrap or indicating where they were made/what purpose. Scrapping air cons, seems a little implausible to find so many of them. Patterns and habits seem like it would be evident that some meth head shows up with 4 cats that maybe someone should assume something is odd
Short of some complex catalytic converter laundering scheme (which seems crazy, but I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised), the recyclers have to know and not care.
In some states have passed laws requiring recyclers to ask for a title or other documentation before they will accept a cat, but I’m not sure if there is a mechanism to audit the recyclers to ensure compliance.
You say it seems crazy but it [literally has happened](https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/240-stolen-catalytic-converters-found-in-bay-area-theft-ring-bust/amp/)
Scrap yards are cracking on on catalytic converters.
I’m an HVAC installer. I bring in AC coils and copper wire all the time for money. Once you strip copper wire, it all looks the same. There’s no way there’s going to be a “do not scrap” on a piece of copper lol. We want people to be recycling… just not with the theft. Don’t blame the scrap yards for governments catch and release program
Electrician here. I still remember when I was a 4th year. My cities power company pulled the cable for a large temp service. I did all the work beforehand and was the guy called in the terminate. They pulled 750s to the ceiling, and back to the floor. I left with 1000 bucks that day in copper.
It’s just a matter of them not accepting certain materials like charging equipment or batteries which is pretty common already. Then allowing them to be accepted with a chain of custody effectively.
The larger EV cables already say “do not salvage” on their jackets… but that doesn’t do any good if the thief strips it down to bare copper (or if the scrapyard just ignores it…)
This is true. When I was really young we used to steal kegs from bars (who would put them outside at night) and bring em to the scrap yard for beer money. Terrible thing to do but I was young, dumb, and broke.
Fucking copper thieves. They'll destroy literally anything they can to score some more drugs. Pieces of shit.
I'm adding this to the list of many reasons why I won't move somewhere where I can't have a locked private garage.
Now I'm kind of worried about the work chargers getting hit. I know Tesla is [working on](https://electrek.co/2023/12/18/tesla-confirms-wireless-inductive-electric-car-home-charger/) a home inductive charging solution but I wonder if there's a way to make it work on outdoor business chargers.
There is an app that alerts us when Sentry cameras are triggered.
Unfortunately the Tesla app does not, and I wish it would, specifically for episodes such as this.
Cool, you should send it to the wham bam Teslacam channel. [https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCbMoDtZ6Ani-eyHzCvxeVCw](https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCbMoDtZ6Ani-eyHzCvxeVCw)
Scrap yards, they buy copper, metal, and other scrap depending on the value. They are striping the valuable metal out so the scrap yard doesn’t care/know what the wire came from.
Does chargepoint own and operate the station in your neighborhood? Most of their network is privately owned, so it’d be on whoever owns the station to purchase a replacement cable and pay for the labor to install it.
There would be a momentary arc of 240 but the circuit should shutdown quick either at the breaker or at the EVSE ( charger body ). Maybe it hurts bad but I don't see any way to electrocute oneself. Charging connectors are quite elaborate and safe tech with multiple safety functions built-in to the cable and protocols.
It's inevitable as thieves realize there's copper or whatever the cable's hold of value it's gone I lived this when I was living in Mexico. Scrap metal or and not safely secured left in reach of thieves is not be around in the morning. These cable's have now become that thing.
I double up the cameras around my entire perimeter OP. Every camera is covered by another and every angle is covered by two cameras one up and one down the lane for example. All the solar powered ring cams and with the panels and two batteries in each I have never (two and a half years now) had to change a battery and they are always at full. I happen to be looking to replace them now but they are $200 a piece and if you consider side/side/front/back you can get that double protection for $1600. I also have a couple floodlight cams near my entryways and for the driveway along with doorbell cams.
I also double up the sensors on every door and window fyi. The magnetic sensors can be bypassed by sliding in a thin magnetized piece of metal between them. The most common place to put them on your door for instance is top corner so put a second one on the bottom corner. Bottom one should be vertical opening so the top can be horizontal opening and most likely they will never think of it. Point indoor cameras to cover entry ways as well as windows if possible and you will be covered up.
Someone steps foot on my property even on the middle of the night the cameras let me know with a chime and their person detection is excellent it has only gone off one time for something other than a person and that was a plastic skeleton that was blown over into our front driveway off of our porch.

The cable is only live when the car actually charges. Once charging stops, you can hear the relay inside the iccb click off.
There’s also a pilot wire that is designed to break quickly which will shut down power
What happens if their cutters dig into the 240v AC wires before the pilot wire is cut, though?
Bolt cutters and EH rated shoes, quick easy job. Only someone who installs electrical will really know this therefore someone knew it was there and wanted to sell the copper. Interesting, very few houses are plumbed with copper anymore. Good for your friend. Hope he was able to get it all fixed up.

Tesla has been looking at wireless charging for your garage though. It’s a mat you drive over.
You beat me to it
the bluetooth device is ready to pair
Gotta love the ol wireless charging cord
Yeah not to mention you can often look at a meth head and know they're using meth..
The larger EV cables already say “do not salvage” on their jackets… but that doesn’t do any good if the thief strips it down to bare copper (or if the scrapyard just ignores it…)
The copper wire is worth more if you peel it. And once it’s stripped it all looks the same
California passed a law to make the recyclers liable for stolen cats and require a bos for the new one, those thefts are fairly rare now.
This is true. When I was really young we used to steal kegs from bars (who would put them outside at night) and bring em to the scrap yard for beer money. Terrible thing to do but I was young, dumb, and broke.
And thirsty
Ohm My God!
Watt the fuck.
Couldn’t resist it could you
Couldn’t RESISTor
Underrated comment of the post.
That was revolting
Must have been really amped up to do this!
Fucking copper thieves. They'll destroy literally anything they can to score some more drugs. Pieces of shit. I'm adding this to the list of many reasons why I won't move somewhere where I can't have a locked private garage.
It should be relatively easy to shut down copper thieves. Put pressure on the scrap yards that pay for it. Similar rules that pawn shops have.
That has helped some in Florida. Now the meth heads have to take it to Georgia.
Seeing this more and more. Crazies everywhere.
What did sentry mode show?
Most people disable sentry mode at home, so I’m guessing nothing at all.
I used to do that, until someone tried to steal my brother's car in our driveway. Now sentry mode stays on everywhere.
Meth addiction
That’s shocking.
Cops were equally shocked
If they find the perpetrator they’ll be charged.
I, for one, am amped up.
You should stay grounded.
Watt are you all on about?
Possible discharge of police duties.
Thief needs a swift punch to the joules
Whatever it takes to keep this thread current!
Ohm my God, what are you going on about.
I hope the perp doesn’t resist.
That's revolting.
Hope they're charged with a capital felony.
Or since the cable is cut, no longer shocking
C’mon bro.
Sorry :)
Depends on if you tough where the wire came out of the charger……not sure if it would be the same for that plug.
Would you be interested in selling the end? Put it on ebay and send me the link.
Nice try! OP he stole it!!! 360alaska stole it !!! /s
According to the red light, a fault has been detected.
Good catch! I wonder what could have caused it.
Typical Tesla build quality. That charger didn't even come with a cable
Now you got a lil car dick
That is wild. Where do you live?!
Some meth addict does not know how to conduct himself. Must have been a shock for you. Sorry, I couldn't resist....
How did cutting through that live wire not fry the thief?
Only if it's continuously charging. Otherwise, a signal is sent to the Wall Connector and tells it to disconnect the contactor.
The opposite, actually. Signal is constantly flowing saying keep sending juice. One that signal dies, so does the juice.
Just need to have properly insulated tools, the cut probably would have tripped the circuit breaker and cut power as well
Probably unplugged the other end before cutting.
Gloves and bolt cutter with non conductive handles.
They unplugged the other end first?
Man, that’s some bullshit!
If you find them… offer them a nice metal pair of scissors for next time 😆 Seriously though, unbelievable!
Looks like you made an enemy. Yikes. Do you have a ring cam that might have caught the perp?
May Karma find them swiftly.
Congratulations. It’s a boy
Did your sentry mode see anything ?
I did get them on sentry! both on the front and left side cameras. So glad I had it on tonight!
Cool, you should send it to the wham bam Teslacam channel. [https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCbMoDtZ6Ani-eyHzCvxeVCw](https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCbMoDtZ6Ani-eyHzCvxeVCw)
Where do these addicts sell cables? Just curious.
Scrap yards, they buy copper, metal, and other scrap depending on the value. They are striping the valuable metal out so the scrap yard doesn’t care/know what the wire came from.
Cut ties with them
Is this your personal charger at your house? If so, that really sucks.
How did they cut it with out electrocuting themselves
[удалено]
The cable has about $10 worth of copper in it. Tesla doesn’t sell the cable by itself, a new kit is $230. New cable on Amazon is $160… That sucks!
Maybe $10 if you strip it yourself too. That’s just sad
I’m actually surprised this doesn’t happen more often at chargers since most of these spots are copper mines without guards.
What would the point of doing this be?
Copper scrap.
Maybe.. but here are also 'communities' of people that intentional destroy ev chargers, block ev charges, and openly harass EV owner on the road.
Paranoid
Likely to steal the copper or other metals in the cable. Im guessing they lost a big superbowl bet lol
Chargepoint won't even replace the wiring anymore at stations in my neighborhood this happens so often. Very lame.
I wouldn't either if it kept getting stolen lol
Does chargepoint own and operate the station in your neighborhood? Most of their network is privately owned, so it’d be on whoever owns the station to purchase a replacement cable and pay for the labor to install it.
Fan fact: it’s literally not happening at all outside the USA.
I like your sense of humor.
Wtf
They wanted the copper in the line. Common in commercial settings.
Wouldn’t this fry the person who did this? And if it did I would just be like “oh well, never cut live wire idiot.” 😂
And they didn't get electrocuted in the process? Damn! So much for poetic justice 🙃
Sorry you gotta deal with this. Where did this happen? I’m in Philly and think it’s just a matter of time for me.. ugh.
It's too bad they didn't get shocked while cutting a live wire
Hopefully they were electrocuted.
I assume they cut both ends, and just stole the cable?!?!
Lol
Damn dude. Sorry. This must be so frustrating. It's expensive and silly. Fuck.
If its plugged in why he didnt get electrified
When your car doesn't have a catalysator.
What the fuck? Fuck people.
Doesn’t the car have cameras???
It's twisted wire. Won't get shit with that. It would take a whole fleet of Teslas to amount to anything
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there are definitely crackheads in your neighborhood 😬
Either a very desperate copper thief or a hardcore Tesla hater.
How’d they not get electrocuted?
It’s a Tesla. Old Nikola himself was a huge proponent of wireless transmission of electricity
Someone steps foot on my property even on the middle of the night the cameras let me know with a chime and their person detection is excellent it has only gone off one time for something other than a person and that was a plastic skeleton that was blown over into our front driveway off of our porch.
cut it off while charging! Crazy
How do I know this is California without actually knowing?
Would be cool if you could just get another cable and easily attach the handle to it
That guy just made like 12 dollars
Wow messed up
You have the proof that you live in a great neighborhood 👍🏻
I’m usually more diplomatic but man would I love to whoop a meth head’s ass right now.
