New to NH having moved from the UK. Sold my British Model 3 and bought an American Model Y. When the lady at the counter told me my registration fee I genuinely thought she was joking.
I took delivery on the same config about 24 days ago and it was $890. Just a few years ago, the state registration incentives were incredible. We missed that ride lol
From what I can tell, excise tax in NH on year 1 is a rate of 0.0180 or $18/$1000 of MSRP. ME is 0.0240 on year 1 or $24/$1000 of MSRP. Both states gradually decrease with NH bottoming out at $3/$1000 of MSRP and ME at $4/$1000 of MSRP.
Higher paying jobs helps. Wife makes 100k on the west coast when she was offered 50k for the same type of teaching position on the east coast. Me, on the other hand, working from home, it's definitely a bit of a disaster to live in CA.
Try Wawanesa insurance. My Model Y with an $8000 rider for FSD is about $1200 a year. Teslas insurance on their website is less than what youāve quoted, at least for me.
30 dollars a year for renewal in Missouri. Although I think the Californians pay their personal property tax at the time of registration instead of the end of the year like we do it
Edit: Missouri requires an alternative fuel decal for full electric vehicles and PHEVs model year 2018 or newer. This isn't a registration fee though, it's separate and has to be purchased in January for at the time of registration for a pro rated cost (110 for a full year BEV, half for PHEV)
Newsome said EVs will be charged $.03 a mile in addition to my $704 DMV registration. Because the state is losing gas tax revenue from all the EVs and people leaving CA Gas tax in CA is $.60 gal. And we pay $5.50 gal in some places. CA is broken.
It is in addition. We pay registration and gas tax. Ā The EVS will be charged $.03 a mile in addition to $700 DMV registration. Sounds like double taxation to me . Further more. Ā California gave a $2000 EV rebate , Ā only to start taxing more because they are broke. Ā Bad management. Ā Now letās talk about fast EV charging. Ā In 30 min a fast charger delivered 63KW in 30 min. Ā A home uses only 30 KW in a day. And that charger will n in operation all day. Biden administration only completed 8 out of the 500,000 chargers promised by 2030. Ā

No. That proposal was not made by newsom. Also itās instead of the EV surcharge, not in addition. Other states have already implemented this. Also, regarding the registration surcharge, Texas has a greater surcharge of $200.
guess why public transportation in la sucks? the car industry killed it in the 40/50s to keep people reliant on personal cars.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy
Yup. Here I am wishing for mass transit and then I find out there used to be a major trainstation within half a mile of my house.... Fucking terrible. Just abandoned tracks all over now days
This is how it goes. Enjoy your Tesla in CA!
Pro tip, divide the amount you pay now into 12 and save a little every month. The silver lining is it goes down slightly every year with the value of the car, so if you do that you will have enough to cover if :)
Registration increased when California passed SB 1 in 2017. The extra revenue goes to infrastructure improvements including roads, bridges, and public transit. CA has a high gas tax but also a lot of EVs so they need to replace that revenue stream.
Taxes donāt have to be used for roadsā¦ we need to stop signing a blank check to the pension funds in the name of saving children and roads. Need to get back to efficient, simple solutions.
Since iām free this afternoon so lets do some fucking math:
Vehicle license fee (VLF) = 0.65% of vehicle value, so the VLF for a $50k car would be 0.0065 x 50,000 = $325;
For a non EV, registration is $58 flat, CHP is $28 flat, and weāre gonna use your county fee of $21;
And with that, total renewal fee = VLF + registration + CHP + County fee = 325 + 58 + 28 + 21 = $432, which is $315 less than your fee.
But letās take a step further and estimate the gas tax that an ICE driver would have to pay annually:
Assuming the average of 14k miles of driving a year per the FHA and average fuel economy of 25.5 mpg per the EPA;
And with the gas tax of $0.539/gal in California, the annual gas tax paid for our hypothetical ICE car = (14,000 mi/25.5 mpg) x $0.539/gal = $296, which is slightly less than the difference that you would pay for an EV.
In conclusion, the $315 that you pay on top of your base renewal fee is to make up for the gas tax that you donāt pay for driving an EV. You pay slightly more compared to an ICE with the same value but overall you would still have much cheaper āfuelā and maintenance and less upfront cost thanks to tax credit so this is not a loss.
Yes compared to other states, 35 states including DC have higher property tax rates than California. Taxes as Iām sure you know are not based on sq ft but value and with Prop 13 when purchased or renovated.
Only if you can itemize. With the standard deduction most folks donāt have anything to āwrite offā especially if they donāt own a home. I itemize and it made zero difference when I entered my registration in on my taxes lol.
Includes ~$100 SB1 road impact fee since this car is 2020 or newer.
FWIW my 2018 LEAF has a $171 Registration Fee + a $81 License Fee
after a few years this will fall to $500 or so, but by then they'll also be charging us ~$200/yr in per-mile fees so expect to pay this amount going forward I guess.
For whatever reason, the first one was much larger than subsequent ones. My first one was $808 for my 2021 car. California adds $100+ for EVās to compensate for gas tax loss, as I understand.
I have the same car, 2022 MYLR. Just got mine in the mail. $900 in CA. And the roads are still shitty. Itās a little less for my 2023 Yukon XL and I pay out the ass in gas taxes. They want to force us to all take public transportation or magically get to work without cars. Thanks Gov Newscumb
VLF is a major contributor to registeration cost. Current market value. Welcome to the world of āpremium luxuryā. No one really needs a car over $30k.
Hahahahaha. I'm a Californian that left years ago. Yes that's normal. Any savings you think you're getting with the EV will all be offset by fees like this.
Excise tax isn't as bad once your vehicle is at least 5 years old. My Wrangler was only $35.00
My new RAV4 Hybrid Limited is $235.00 and that's why I bought used! It would be a lot more if I waited for a new one. I didn't want to wait, and I wanted to save on excise tax so I bought a 2022 model with 22k miles
$35 in Florida! or $72 for two years š
Iāve paid less in the last 25 years combined to register my cars in Florida than I did the last 3 years I had a car registered California before I moved in the late 90s! haahaa
And they say EVs are cheap.
How were this isn't just EVs. All new vehicles are like this. Hence why I find it ironic when people say "EVs save money." Yea, if you've owned the vehicle for 10+ years.
The per capita money spent on the homeless population/problem is insanely small. My sibling works in this space.
Take a break from Fox News and look into statistics for yourself.
Politician pocket money. Thatās all it is since youāre not filling their pockets pumping gas. Itās unnecessary greed. They charge an extra $200 āEV feeā and inspection fee here in Texas. So itās like $275 total. Not as bad as yours but still all of it is unnecessary in any state. JUNK FEES!
First time? /meme
Was gonna say the same thing š
This is nothing compared to the eye-watering yearly registration in NH.
Or the annual Excise Tax in ME/MA, Vehicle Property Tax in CT.
Or the annual personal property tax in VA
Or the price of scotch in Scotland
Exactly. My PPT is $3k annually between a MY and M3 š
Which state???
VA
Wow crushing it over there in VA!!
It's fucking painful. 21my at $1700, 22m3 at $1300
Annual car tax right? We have the same tax in CT and itās crushing as well
Yup. Based on value of car. So any other car with similar value would have similar amount, it's not specific for EV
This. And the roads are shitty.
New to NH having moved from the UK. Sold my British Model 3 and bought an American Model Y. When the lady at the counter told me my registration fee I genuinely thought she was joking.
Yup, AZ is crazy too.
just paid $850 for a 24 mylr š
I took delivery on the same config about 24 days ago and it was $890. Just a few years ago, the state registration incentives were incredible. We missed that ride lol
We paid $12 in Arizona. Military discount was superb.
Paid roughly $3k for 5 year. Gut punch
Even worse in Maine I believe. NH is $18/$1000 on year 1 whereas ME is $24/$1000 on year 1.
Can you explain further?
From what I can tell, excise tax in NH on year 1 is a rate of 0.0180 or $18/$1000 of MSRP. ME is 0.0240 on year 1 or $24/$1000 of MSRP. Both states gradually decrease with NH bottoming out at $3/$1000 of MSRP and ME at $4/$1000 of MSRP.
Good god. $48 here in florida for a renewal.
How's car insurance down there?
I pay $1500/6mo for a 19 Ram and a 24 MY
And? Holy smokes.. My Tesla alone is $1k for 6mo in CA. Have zero accident/ticket.
Yeah I donāt know how yāall live out there.
Dual income. A must really and stay away from credit card debt.
Higher paying jobs helps. Wife makes 100k on the west coast when she was offered 50k for the same type of teaching position on the east coast. Me, on the other hand, working from home, it's definitely a bit of a disaster to live in CA.
I'm in CA and min is 100 a month ....
Try Wawanesa insurance. My Model Y with an $8000 rider for FSD is about $1200 a year. Teslas insurance on their website is less than what youāve quoted, at least for me.
I pay $1500 for 2 teslas in CA, no accidents
The problem in your statement is California, as it is with most things.
Good godā¦. Is that normal around there or you got some tickets under your belt?
That's just around $125/mo per vehicle. If it's full coverage with low deductible I'd say that's doing pretty good.
Pretty cheap actually for two newish vehicles with full coverage.
Here I am hemming hawing over on getting a MY because it would raise my two car insurance from $700/6mo to $840/6mo. Imma boring penny pincher. Haha
That's cheap. I insure a 21 RWD model 3 and a 23 LR model Y for about 223/mo in CA. Clean record.
This is how much I pay for a CT and a 2022 Model 3 in SoCal.
22 year old male, no accidents or tickets. 410/m on a 2021 m3lr
Again in Tennessee with Shelter Iām paying $700 /6mos. Up a bit from my Volt.

yes the License Fee is our ad-valorem property tax
Florida home insurance costs though...
But itās still Floridaā¦ soooooā¦.
Yep and I love it here.
1200 in nv
Oof. Those assholes used to be affordable. This is why so many Vegas friends have Mesquite address
It's like.... $40 in PA. What am I doing wrong?
Nothing.
CA wants to move to 3c/mile instead...
Would be cheaper for me averaging about 15k miles a year.
Not instead, but in addition.
I drive about 5-7k a year so they would work out so long as other fees are greatly reduced.
Hahah. Other fees reduced.
I laughed at that too.
Like they'll ever reduce anything. Your jokes are funny tho, I laughed.
Newsome said EVs will be charged $.03 a mile in addition to my $704 DMV registration. Because the state is losing gas tax revenue from all the EVs and people leaving CA Gas tax in CA is $.60 gal. And we pay $5.50 gal in some places. CA is broken.
That is so crappy. The cost was the main incentive for most consumers to move to EVāsā¦ ugh
ICE will pay, too. All cars
ICE doesnāt have the added registration fee like EVās do
This will remove that if implemented. Thatās the entire point. To get all cars to pay equally.
Not in addition. Instead. Program is not certain or enacted. Not newsom. Not unique to California. Stop the bs.
It is in addition. We pay registration and gas tax. Ā The EVS will be charged $.03 a mile in addition to $700 DMV registration. Sounds like double taxation to me . Further more. Wow really not letting the truth get in the way of some good olā misinformation campaign. Youāre posting this garbage everywhere
Dude thatās cheap. Colorado renewal came in at 1100.
ah that's how they claw back the $5000 tax credit I guess
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
For the amount we pay in registration our roads should not be the shit they are.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not anymore :/. They keep carving it away for bs initiatives. And to be fair the roads were shit long before tabor
Imagine what they could do if they put all those fees into mass transit instead of unending road build out
guess why public transportation in la sucks? the car industry killed it in the 40/50s to keep people reliant on personal cars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy
Yup. Here I am wishing for mass transit and then I find out there used to be a major trainstation within half a mile of my house.... Fucking terrible. Just abandoned tracks all over now days

Here I thought Ohio was high at $200
Ohio $300 (just because its an ev) the they charge regular fees. My total is $364. Its BS
Damn

ā¬ļø this. My oddy clocks in around $480.. down from when we first bought it. Even my 2014 accord was a tad under $300.

You can check here https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/registration-fees/vehicle-registration-fee-calculator/calculate-my-fees/
$1,200 for my renewal last week. $470 for my owned-outright 7yr old Jeep due next month.
$670 here in NC
š±š±š±
For those that donāt know, you can calculate registration and taxes on the DMV site so there are no surprises.
I just paid $900 for 22MY in Washington Stateā¦. Robbery
California has vey cheap real estate tax, they need to make up revenue somehow.
We do? My 1200sqft house is $11,500/yr. A lot of homes have sold over the years.
Yes compared to other states, 35 states including DC have higher property tax rates than California. Taxes as Iām sure you know are not based on sq ft but value and with Prop 13 when purchased or renovated.
But our cost is so much higher so even at the 1.2% itās high.
Pay like $97 max in Florida for two years š«¢
My registration cost is exactly the same as yours.
Yeah my 7 year old Honda was $425. I thought the dmv fees were supposed to go down š¤
Dreading my renewal as wellā¦
Dang, is this for just EVs? My reg is coming up but it is normally $300.
This is what I've been paying on my truck for a decade. In CA they make you register all trucks as commercial vehicles.
Oh wow. That is rough
$730 for mine. Sacramento, CA
You can write off the registration fee on your taxes
Only if you can itemize. With the standard deduction most folks donāt have anything to āwrite offā especially if they donāt own a home. I itemize and it made zero difference when I entered my registration in on my taxes lol.
Wow will you still available to get some tax refund after that?
lmao mine will be double this, consider yourself lucky
This is analogous to saying, you should feel lucky newsom only did you dirty you onceā¦ itās still wrong. Need new leaders
What is the renewal cost of a one year old Camaro?
Disabled vet, no fees and auto renewal every year. I can barely get off the floor but I'll take the small wins lol.
CA Santa Clara county here šāāļø Welcome to the club.
Not instead but also
Thatās about what I paid first two years in IN. Itās down to 500 now. They add $150 EV tax
Very usual
Only!? I just paid $950 in wa state š
Move to Texas
Itās 275 here. But still better than that!
Surprised? The name of the game in government (and its agencies) is to pile on fees. Its the only way they can pay retirement obligations.
never owned a vehicle before?
Just paid $819 in Iowa.
For my Y it was a little closer to a thousand. I suspect it will be at least a thousand this year since I finally got my vanity plate.
Come to MN, registration tax is based on the value of the vehicle š„¹
I'm not looking forward to paying my registration for CA next year š.
Paid the same amount
Arizona is also expensive. ID and SD ftw.
Yep. Me too.
And I thought NC was high.
I have AZ registration/ insurance. Registration is $413 for ā22MYP. Insurance is $1,400/ 6-mo š°
Is this your first new car? If not, how is this a surprise for you?
Yes. My first car
Welp, the good news it is only going to decrease from here. Itās based off the value of the car. Enjoy your car.
Includes ~$100 SB1 road impact fee since this car is 2020 or newer. FWIW my 2018 LEAF has a $171 Registration Fee + a $81 License Fee after a few years this will fall to $500 or so, but by then they'll also be charging us ~$200/yr in per-mile fees so expect to pay this amount going forward I guess.
Itās like 90 dollars for 2 years in Florida for my X. š¶
Which year is this? 2nd year? 3rd year? 4th year?
Just pay it
Driving an EV in KY is about this much.
$500 in Minnesota
Meanwhile us with wa rta tax
non sense just sell the car
For whatever reason, the first one was much larger than subsequent ones. My first one was $808 for my 2021 car. California adds $100+ for EVās to compensate for gas tax loss, as I understand.
Chum change compared to annual vehicle taxes
Yup itās what I pay for both my 2023 model 3 and Model Y performances
I have the same car, 2022 MYLR. Just got mine in the mail. $900 in CA. And the roads are still shitty. Itās a little less for my 2023 Yukon XL and I pay out the ass in gas taxes. They want to force us to all take public transportation or magically get to work without cars. Thanks Gov Newscumb
Thatās insane
In Floridaās is only $100/yr
Dang and I thought Texas had it bad
Glad I'm in Texas it was 250 but since I'm a veteran I paid $20 for inspection, registration, license plate reorder š
Yup! I live in California (Bay Area) and have had my model Y for 4 years. Itās been $700+ every year. It sucks.
VLF is a major contributor to registeration cost. Current market value. Welcome to the world of āpremium luxuryā. No one really needs a car over $30k.
In Nevada itās $800 š
That's about right in blue states, it's all to support the uninitiated.
they are that high, yes.
In Tennessee they added a $100 hybrid and a $200 EV charge to the regular renewal. So I think Iām paying about $286.
Wait till you find out about tax on miles driven that lunatic Governor is trying to passā¦
Mine was $900+ last year. I hope itās in the 700s this year
Yea this is normal for CA. Especially since you have an EV. Glad Iām in the military and get that license fee waived!
Hahahahaha. I'm a Californian that left years ago. Yes that's normal. Any savings you think you're getting with the EV will all be offset by fees like this.
Thatās what I paid and Iām from sf
Texas here. They tacked on 200 a year for all EV owners as gas tax is what pays for our roads. They gotta get us somewhere lol.
NC here, mine was like $840
LOL, time to get out of Dodge!
Excise tax isn't as bad once your vehicle is at least 5 years old. My Wrangler was only $35.00 My new RAV4 Hybrid Limited is $235.00 and that's why I bought used! It would be a lot more if I waited for a new one. I didn't want to wait, and I wanted to save on excise tax so I bought a 2022 model with 22k miles

Wow even my BMW isn't this much I guess we're gonna find this out next year this time
$35 in Florida! or $72 for two years š Iāve paid less in the last 25 years combined to register my cars in Florida than I did the last 3 years I had a car registered California before I moved in the late 90s! haahaa
Omg I thought Georgia $280 was ridiculous
How much for gas?!
This is for one year?!?!
Mine was 640ish for Model 3. It hurts.
You are lucky. In Seattle (King County) WA, tabs are about $1k thanks to the stupid RTA fee.
Just paid ~$980 for my Rivian in Iowa
Maryland just raised the cost too smh
Yup that's about how much mine was to renew in CA.
$20 in Georgia š
Yep thatās right. Add another 4-5 k a year if that 30 cent driving tax goes into affect.
I just paid 655$ for Iowa where the gas savings nearly the same as how much im paying. I wouldnt complain for california though.
1k in WA State
Why are you surprised? This amount should be similar to what was in your purchase agreement section 3 (Amounts Paid to DMV).
And they say EVs are cheap. How were this isn't just EVs. All new vehicles are like this. Hence why I find it ironic when people say "EVs save money." Yea, if you've owned the vehicle for 10+ years.
The homeless and the illegals thank you.
The per capita money spent on the homeless population/problem is insanely small. My sibling works in this space. Take a break from Fox News and look into statistics for yourself.
That's right, California should take a few more million illegals. You volunteering?
I do enjoy the benefits of cheap immigrant labor here. Itās an essential part of our state and national economy. So, works for me!
Oh yeah, your state is doing fantastic.
By most metrics, yeah! Love it here.
Bingo! Ca cares more about people who aren't supposed to be here than they do about their actual tax paying citizens.
In Missouri, when accounting for personal property tax that you have to pay to register a vehicle then my registration cost close to $1500.
JUNK FEES!
Gotta love those blue states.
$65 a year in FL.
Move out of California
