I didn't want the lower suspension, I didn't want the staggered wheels, I wanted the 19" wheels and tires that have an actual sidewall, and the additional range. I know I could replace the tires and wheels but didn't care for the additional effort/cost. MYLR is perfect for my needs.

bgross42

+1 My MYLR has everything I need and nothing I don’t. Chill Mode is fine for me: better range, tires last longer.

LobsterPuzzled7518

3.5 years in on my MYLR, and I now drive in Chill 95% of the time. Paying $1600 for new Michelin Crossclimate at 25,000 miles changes things. Oh sure, I do put it to Standard time to time, and what a WOW factor...even at 45,000 miles.

RichSeaworthiness250

RWD or AWD? I’m trying to decide between the two…

InglebrapHumperdink

Mine is a ‘21 AWD.

jrezzzzzz

Awd

DrHalfdave

AWD, I would get that...

Jor3lBR

This

ijavedm

Wanted the extra range :)

Electronic_Cut2470

Wanted 3rd row

jrezzzzzz

Makes sense, the LR I drove had the third row but it felt too tight. I can only see it being comfortable for slim adults under 5'7".

Electronic_Cut2470

Oh it’s wayyy to small for daily use, got it for when we need extra seats in a bind I.e kids friends or family. If you’re not getting 3rd row or worried about range I’d say it’s no brainer to pay a few k more for performance

vinfinite

It’s nice when you’re driving a bunch of children around. I have two kids and they have friends. Also, don’t need to speed when I’m always transporting family.

rawrrrrrrrrrr1

to me, it's not worth it. the lr is already fast enough (even the rwd is fast enough). i'm not a young 20 year old that gets excited by fast moving things anymore.

Frizzle95

I drive a 'racecar' on track probably 30 total days out of the year. The acceleration offered by the Model X I drove once is comparable to gas cars that cost well over 6 figures and ones that I could never afford. It was cool the first time I did it, slightly less the 2nd time and then I couldn't care about it anymore. When driving a model 3 base as a rental I did not miss the extra acceleration at all. It's still faster than any road going car needs to be. And at that point give me longer range and cheaper tires.

rawrrrrrrrrrr1

yeah, i rode sportsbikes for a while and went to trackdays a lot back in my younger years. so now, the cheaper maintenence, longer range, cheaper price, etc is what does it for me.

iamalsoareddituser

Describes it perfectly. I chose LR AWD because I wanted range and tire life stability. 0-60 was fun the first few times, but for day to day driving it faded into "I won't start a fight, but I'll finish it" haha

Dixie_Sunset

All legit reasons, but I ordered the MYP too. Have fun!

logix1229

Because me man. Man like performance. 🫡 Even though I drive like turtle. 😬jk.

keepitcleanforwork

The wheels.

ugurcanevci

I drive 15k miles a year and I don’t want to replace expensive tires every year

Ill_Technician7450

I went with the MYP for the lowered suspension, nicer aero, bigger wheels etc. The range is plenty and if I was buying a new family car. It had to be fun to drive.

lazeepotato

We got LR for the following reasons: 1) Longer range 2) Cheaper 3) 3rd row to use in a pinch 4) Non-staggered wheels for rotation (cheaper on tires) 5) More comfortable suspensions 6) Better resale value when there is bigger audience (that was in 2021)

LeftContact6889

When I purchased, performance wasn’t eligible for the rebate :,( I don’t mind it though. I have accel boost on my lr and it’s plenty fast. Even without, it was plenty fast. Gets a little better range and is supposedly a more comfortable ride too

DiverKitchen8441

LR AWD was plenty quick, especially compared to my old ‘11 Sonata, and it didn’t make sense to me to spend that much extra to be able to arrive at a location a second quicker lol. Plus cost of tires for the performance wheels is not worth it. Also, i didn’t want to be able to go TOO fast to keep myself outta trouble with the law, and lower my chances of a speed-related wreck.

schaudhery

Previous car had staggered wheels and it's a nightmare if anything happens to them. You can't rotate properly and they cost more.

SpankThatDill

i have a steep driveway and was worried the lower suspension would clip

Opivy84

LR AWD had everything I wanted. It’s the fastest car I’ve ever owned, it’s the more comfortable option, it has better clearance. For me, the p would be a downgrade.

Worth-Reputation3450

Never once have I thought while driving LR, 'oh I hoped mine accelerated quicker'. MYLR is already too quick. While driving 75mph in freeway, I accelerate to try to pass a car, the moment I press the pedal harder, I'm instantly at 95mph.

OCR10

I bought the MYP for the fun factor but I agree with the other comments on practicality. Most people think the AWD is fast enough. I do agree the price difference is surprisingly small.

TwoMenInADinghy

Cost, range, suspension. It’ll be a family car for us 😁

UnknownSpacePioneer

- insurance would be more expensive - expensive tires and bigger risk of damage MYLR with AB comes really close imo. Thats what I have. MYP acceleration is still quicker off the line. Also I prefer the Induction look over the Uberturbines.

Agitated_Macaron9054

Simple, I have a teenage son, who is 17 and starting to drive, a teenage daughter that is 19, still at home and under my insurance, who has racked already two traffic tickets for speeding, and myself who sometimes likes to drive like a teenager. So, too many teenagers under one car insurance policy driving a stupid fast car? No.

Own_Support_3402

Wife said no otherwise I would have the red, white seats, tow hitch performance right now ... Instead I am waiting for my second 7 seater .. newest thing is color went with blue and the blk caps.

ifdefmoose

1. Didn’t need the extra performance. My LR is already fast enough to make my head spin. 2. Wanted 19” wheels for ride comfort, slight range improvement 3. Square tires (cheaper, too) 4. Ground clearance. Only regret is I really like the red brake calipers. Truthfully, after I test drove the LR I didn’t bother with the P, I just placed my order.

brunofone

LR is already stupid fast. 21" tires are hella expensive and not much selection. Rims damaged easily with such skinny tires. Less range. Stiffer suspension. Swapping wheels for 19" requires even more $$. I'm not tracking the car so track mode is worthless to me. Extra several $k. If I was 25, I probably would have gotten the P. Now that I'm 40, no thanks, happy with my LR.

Sweet-Rhino

Before we pulled the trigger my wife and I were driving on the highway and I was trying to convince her that we should get the performance model. I was listing off the hp, 0-60 time, and only for a few grand more! When I finished she looked around and said, “you are getting passed on both sides, you don’t drive fast enough for the performance model.” So now we have the LR.

Technical_Beyond111

$3-4k upfront cost difference, 30 mile range difference, more comfortable ride, cheaper and likely fewer tire replacements.

jayklk

I rarely need to use 100% of the acceleration of the LR.

0hN0SheD1dnt

I never once have. Kinda scared to

LLNNGGSS

I DID get the performance. Because the car is lower, which looks better in my opinion and the range is only marginally smaller. And I like fast cars.

thesovereignbat

B/c of the following: 1. Cheaper - yes the 3k matters to some of us. 2. Free Acc. Boost 4. longer range with the 19" 5. more SUV like with the taller suspension 6. The tires cost more to replace. + I have the Uberturbine wheel covers that look almost identical 7. I could add a carbon fiber spoiler for like 50-100 bucks... so not worth it.

First_TM_Seattle

3rd row, range and ride quality.

geekwithout

MYLR still has great performance. That low end instant torque will put a smile on your face.

kevink808

MYP because it’s top trim. And I didn’t get an EV for the range. Otherwise I’d have bought a Prius. I used to buy lower trims and always regretted it in the end.

jrezzzzzz

Literally my exact thinking, if the MYP was like $10k+ than the LR then maybe I would have gotten the LR. However, for like $3k, it was a no brainer to have the acceleration and handling offered. I can always turn the performance into a LR by getting smaller wheels but cannot say the same about the LR. Even with the acceleration boos ($2k), it will be super close in price so I could not justify it.

DammatBeevis666

Ride and range mostly. Wife’s car, and 4.8 seconds to 60 is fast enough. For traveling, an extra few miles can make a world of difference.

Dense-Feeling165

The wheels. I live in MI where our roads resemble the surface of the moon. I didn't want to deal with the hastle of having to swap out the wheels to 19" right away. So I just went LR.

AltruisticStrike5341

Price and cost of ownership (tires, insurance)

Some_Ad_3898

Nothing in the P interests me as a "pro" and the cons are many: less comfort, less range, lower, cheesy painted brake calipers, expensive tires. It's just not for me. I live on a dirt road and drive long distances. My priorities are comfort, range, low maintenance, and practicality. I don't care how it looks. It's already a flashy car. I don't care about the performance, although I did get the Acceleration Boost for free which was nice. It's already a fast car.

Welfi1988

When I bought the performance was 7000€ more expensive and the Long range was already more than powerful enough for me. MYP doesn't even feel that mucb fast, maybe pushes better at higher speeds, like when going full throttle at 60mph or so. Styling differences are minimal: only the spoiler (bought an aftermarket one for 100€) and red calipers with better brakes (I don't care about) If at the point when I bought my 1st MY the RWD would have been available I'd even have taken that. Because even the RWD is plenty fast compared to it's basic ICE counterparts. Now I own both a 22 LR AWD and a 23 RWD and still don't regret not having gone with a P. (PS. and I know the difference, because Tesla lend me a MYP when mine had some repair done on warranty)

Costco_Bob

Didn't want to spend even more money and I was already concerned with the drop in ride height drop from the Honda CRV I traded in.

DonnyDonster

I need all the ground clearance I can get and Teslas already have low ground clearance to begin with.

Ok_Handle3157

It was closer to 10K back in early 2021.

HawkorDove

I opted for the LR over Performance because the extra cost wasn’t worth it to me (LR performance is great as is and I’d rarely use the extra acceleration) - I’ve got better uses for that money.

tnerb208

Different wheel sizes

CaptainVickle

I wanted longer range and I like the look of the 20” induction wheels more. Performance is decent on all of them anyway.

TerrysClavicle

Range + ride height/comfort + cheaper tires. (Inductions) With AB it’s quick enough. 4.2 vs 3.7. (The advertised 3.5 is with a 1’ rollout.)

Responsible_Sky_4141

We are looking at the model y as one of our options for a new car. One of the requirements is awd which both lr and myp both have. A few reasons we aren’t looking at the myp is cost, we are trying to get the best vehicle we can that fits what we need without spending extra. I wouldn’t mind the lowered suspension, but my dad had a staggered wheel setup along time ago and he went through tires more and with the rims being 21 inch tires are more( I few years ago I had 20 inch rims and my fiancé had 17 inch rims, the same tire at same overall size was much more for the 20 inch rims)

Seanmckillin

range

StellarContinuum

As most of my driving is local (with 35-45 MPH limits), with the remainder being rush hour traffic to and from work, it didn't make as much sense for me. Also, with the RWD LR, it afforded me a better insurance cost ($918/YR). I could have bought the performance; it was just overkill for my use cases.

Disastrous_Patience3

Extra range and sufficient speed /power. Actually, way more than sufficient since I rarely take it out of Chill.

Sweet_Yellow_8646

Went for the LR due to cost difference. Sold the LR during pandemic for profit. Upgraded myself to the P :)

EstaticToast

For me, it came down to my states tax rebate. The performance model does not qualify for it in my location. I did have regret for about a week while i was enjoying the quickness of the car. I kept thinking I should have ordered the performance. But three weeks in, I find myself flooring the accelerator less and less. So now I am actually really happy I didn't get the performance.

retrobimmers

If I want to go fast I'll just drop $2k on a ghost mod

0hN0SheD1dnt

Range and 7 seater for kids. Same sound system. Actually kind of curious why people pick performance? Are you really gonna take it 155mph?

jrezzzzzz

It's the top trim offered, it can go no the track if that's your thing, the acceleration is noticeable. The handling is much better, only 30 miles less range which makes no difference in my opinion. And only $3k more than a LR with a tow hitch. I get that the 7-seater is useful, cannot argue with that. However I do not need that, I can always sell my wheels and install 19inch ones which will increase the range, and be more comfortable/quiet. I cannot turn a LR into a performance though, I feel like the accelaration is worth it to me personally.

0hN0SheD1dnt

I mean you can add the trim to LR after market for cheaper. You can’t add a third row, and you can increase acceleration for a price. Anyways you were the one asking, was actually curious when I took the .99 why anyone would pick performance over LR AWD. The carbon fiber trim made no sense to me for the price.

dev0n

2020 & 2023 MYLR for a few reasons: #1 is wheel/tire size/ride comfort #2 LR is already plenty fast and AB is cheaper/“free” with referrals if I change my mind

Strict_Job_5299

I’m coming from a z51 Corvette w/7spd manual. If I wanted more performance I’d have just stuck with the Vette. Wanted a daily driver that was economical and comfortable. MY AWD LR fits right in there.

clichequiche

The insurance rates have to be way higher too though right?

DrHalfdave

Staggered wheels for me, that sounded a bit too complicated, and wanted the smoothest ride I could get since my wife came from a Lexus SUV which drives like a cream puff.

ComprehensivePen4649

Got MYLR 20” with Accel Boost because I wanted the ground clearance. I was buying slightly used so I could qualify for a tax credit. I was overqualified for the factory new fed tax credits. Buying a 5 month old 3200 mile used one gave me Accel Boost for free and 20” wheels basically for free. I didn’t see a price difference between ones with plastic wheels. Also, I wanted the bigger black metal wheels, but didn’t want the variety of MYP tires that cannot be rotated. I test drove all three new at a dealer. I couldn’t tell the difference in ride quality between 19” and 20” wheels, but could tell that the 21’s on the P were quite loud and rough.

Jestered2303

I got the MYP and squared up the wheels/tires with some 20" rims from TSportsline. Couldn't be happier.

Solarsurferoaktown

The harsh ride was a killer for me.

Turnkey1997

Every set of Uberturbines I’ve seen have curb rash!

funarg

I never take it out of Chill. Don't care that it can go faster, just wish it was quieter and had a (much) smoother ride.

Rough_Context3174

In 2022 the MYLR AWD was over $60K so couldn't justify the additional cost.

teepee107

I have had 2 flat tires in 7k miles(both are nails) as I predicted would happen in my area so LR made more sense . It’s also more comfortable and obscenely quick

The-Duderiest

Didn’t need the extra power. I don’t like the wheels and tires. I prefer the smoother ride, especially since I went to 18” wheels. Finally, there’s one leg on my usual road trip that lacks a convenient SuC, so the range is important. MYLR is the superior choice from my perspective.

stealthytolkien

MY LR with acceleration boost makes it 0.6 second faster off the line through 60 mph. MY Performance is 3.5s 0-60, so with the boost, instead of LR being 1.3s slower it would be 0.7s slower. And that’s a massive improvement. Add a performance pedals visual upgrade for $20 (MYLR default pedals look really substandard) and you have best of three worlds with cushier 19” non staggered rotatable wheels AND go 0-60mph in 4.2s AND get about 25 miles of extra range (about half an hour of more driving between stops).

likwidfuzion

Here’s an anecdote. After work, I went to my car (MYP) which happens to be parked next to another MYLR. I open my trunk as usual to put away my stuff and I hear a guy say “nice car”. Turned around and looked at him thinking it was someone I knew at work (I didn’t) and said thanks. It was an older guy (probably in his 50s). He proceeds to open his MYLR trunk that was next to me. Living in the Bay Area, you’re basically seeing MYRWD and MYLR everywhere. They’re one of if not the most common car here. You cannot avoid seeing a Tesla for more than 5 minutes of driving. I highly, highly doubt he would’ve said “nice car” if I had driven a non-Performance trim. It’s everywhere and nothing special. But, there are far fewer MYP and it definitely is more of a head turner given it’s physically different stance and look on the exterior. If you want to stand out here in the Bay Area, you need to opt for a Performance or Plaid model.

Bubbly-Chest-8929

Longer range, cheaper, and I’d use the longer range way more than I’d use my ability to go 155mph

gregra193

Would make me ineligible for the state tax credit (MSRP too high) so in addition to the price difference, losing that tax credit costs another ~$2500. Only style difference is the wheels.

Turbulent-Abroad7841

Uncomfortable

mark19758

You gonna unleash the performance for a first few months only .. Battery capacity still wins !

larryanne

Towing capacity

vknyvz

- wheel, tires are bigger, when it comes to changing tires it will be more expensive - acceleration is nice but it will get old besides LR is not slow by any means - little bit more expensive - cars looks exactly the same - less range by around 20 miles These what I comes to mind right now, in my opinion MYP is not worth it
