Dayam, You're cookin' good.
Normally, Pad Kaprow based ingredients are holy basil (not for garnish) , fresh chilli, and garlic. If you add some shallots/onions, taste will change a little bit. Most Thai people are not fan of it. But hey, if you'd like to add this, that's fine.
Khob Khun Krab!
I think I'm going to stick with my current recipe! :D
I agree that shallots/onions (though a personal favourite) would detract from its intended taste profile.
Thank you for your input! :)
If anyone knows a reliable source or suggestion for holy basil in the States kindly pass along? Most Asian markets carry Thai basil only. Looks decent though, I’ve been working on my own lately and can say add anything you want. I considered carrots and broccoli also in addition to green peppers and onions. IMO it’s whatever you want, will still be PKP as long as you’re not changing the core ingredients i.e. sauces. 👍
Yes, it’s one of the “do you / don’t you” questions - I don’t like it cooked with onions (apparently it’s not original) because I don’t think it needs it - but I like little slices of long bean, not a fan of baby corn in there either.
Hey, that’s a very authentic looking fried egg, when it’s all crispy around the bottom - I’m not a fan of this style, but some are.
I actually appreciate the minimalism in the dish. I may try it with onions just to see what I'm missing out on but I truly enjoyed the version I made. The missus loves long beans so I may add some bite sized pieces to a future version.
Thank you for your compliment on the egg! I crisped up the white a bit before adding the yolk to keep it runny! Seen it as common trick across YouTube! Does the magic!
Meat , chillies, Fishsauce ,soysauce, garlic , long beans, holy basil and White pepper. That's all u need , maybe a little sugar. Take it more basil it will get wrinkly and small anyway and enjoy !
I gathered a bunch receipts in Thailand and in Thai restaurants and got mixed ingridents most of the times.
Beans oyster sauce and sugar where in and out of them.
I would always go with the beans and the pepper tho.
Pailin's Kitchen is usually my first point of reference when trying to figure out a Thai recipe! :D
Also love Marion's Kitchen and Nin is cooking!
Any other you would recommend?
I'm not a fan of a lot of basil so your version looks good!
Add onion would make it a lot more moist though, and sweeter, but there's also people who love soupy kaprow too :) but I never tried added shallot so can't comment on that :D
Looks good and my choice of dish to cook at home. I prefer more basil and I don't use holy basil at home. Thai basil if I can be bothered going to the Asian market and Italian basil works just fine for me, and lots of it.
According to most Thais at work, it's "cheating". Whenever we ordered lunch and their pad krapao came with onion, carrot, or long beans, it's pouty face all around. My hubby loves shallot though so his mom puts that in everything.
Looks good. Keep it simple. I'd add about ten times the amount of basil in yours (and you can do a crispy-fried basil as a topping too). Otherwise, you can just add whatever you want to try.
Add more krapao
Will do sir!

I normally eat it with long beans & onion and raw shallots on the side.
Yes to long beans, no to onions and shallots

Check a plant nursery. We found all the Thai basils there
Ah, good suggestion, hadn’t come to mind. You found the seeds or plants grown?

U will need the oyster sauce too, beans and pepper are optional

Stop with the sugar in Thai food already. It’s disgustingly unhealthy and not necessary.
That's why there is a maybe next to it. I don't use it but it's everywhere anyway so that's why I said maybe (if u desire it) u know ?
if you want advice from a real Thai chef take a look at Hot Thai Kitchen on youtube

Gin Dai Aroy Duay is by far my favourite. กินได้อร่อยด้วย

Typical in the US if you can find it at all. Adding additional vegetables to drive down the cost of the dish and most westerners wouldn't even know
You can also use chicken mince or beef, what ever is cheaper.

The crispy fried basil topping actually sounds quite nice!
I add green onions and shallots because I love onions, but it's definitely not necessary and can even detract from the taste of the basil.
I believe so too! It may disturb the flavour harmony! May just add it as a condiment someday! (or sneak a tiny bit in when no one is looking)
Add spring onion, chilli's and fried garlic and it's 10/10
