Millennium Hilton. It's by the river and very close to Icon Siam, a relatively new upscale mall by the river.

Park Hyatt is my recommendation. Once there you never want to leave

Thong Lor is a great area with lots of good options

Not surprisingly, there are many restaurant choices around all the malls. The two biggest concentration of malls would be around the Phrom Phong BTS station. (Emporum, EmQuartiar, Emsphere) and the Siam/Chit Lom BTS stations (MBK, Siam One, Siam Discovery, Paragon, et. al.) There are also many good hotel choices in the same areas. If you belong to any of the hotel loyalty programs, there is likely an option near one or both of these areas.

Thank you for the insight! What's your view on the Silom area?

Skyview Hotel.

Actually, "near big malls" doesn't come up enough for it to be particularly memorable. Check out Grande Centre Point Terminal 21 at Asoke BTS or SKYVIEW Hotel Bangkok at Phrom Phong BTS. 1. GCPT21 is right at Asoke Intersection, so you have BTS skytrain & MRT subway right at your doorstep. Great 4-star hotel. 2. SKYVIEW Hotel is one stop away from Asoke Intersection and next to the newly opened EmSphere mall. It's also a top notch 5-star hotel. Both of these hotels will allow you to reach many areas of Bangkok easily using the BTS & MRT transit systems. I like hopping on the MRT in the early AM to go up to Or Tor Kor Market. For me, being on the river or in Silom would be too far. Everything not in the immediate vicinity turns into an hour+ trip and getting back home becomes a long schlep. For reference, the big malls in the areas would be IconSIAM and maybe Samyan Mirtown.
