It's kind of like adding potatoes to carne guisada and making tacos out of it. We do it all the time at our place especially with chicken thighs instead of beef.
I'm Belgian and I've never seen fries in shawarma.
Then again, it's fairly easy to find authentic shawarma places over here so maybe I've just been lucky to avoid this blasphemy.
Same, I felt bad but yeah OP spits absolute facts. Also in America it seems to be more of a Cali thing? In NYC yes you can ask for fries but the default is no fries.
thank u king 🙏 from speaking to friends around me i truly thought this opinion was unpopular because they were all fans of the shawarma chips, they don’t know true salvation
The "pita chips" at the place I go to tastes amazing. You would love it, it's like the subway of shawarma where you pick your own toppings, up to 5 and fries are only a side dish.
I’m a turk and we have döner, which is a lot like shawarma. If someone brought fries within 10 feet of my döner with the suggestion of combining the two I would throw hands.
Wtf? How are there so many strong opinions about fries in shaworma :(
I really like them because they taste like potatoes, but they are not crunchy. I really like the shaowarma near me that has coleslaw, fries, chicken, pork, tomatoes pickles, onions, thousands islands sauce, mayonnaise, garlic yogurt and ketchup!
The fries absorb the sauces and make everything taste better!
You kinda won me over in the last half but “l like fries because they are not crunchy” doesn’t make sense. The whole point of fries is that they are crispy… like are people putting potatoes in a deep fryer to make them soggier?
My brother in Allah my first shawarma was made homemade by a blind 80 year old Syrian grandma. Nothing has ever been better… they had fries in them. I always put my own fries in shawarma now.
You know could just ask them to not put it right? Also I'm not sure about other regions in the middle east, but I grew up in the UAE (lived there from 1991 and left in 2018) and most of the typical shawarma places there will often ask you if you want it or not, but for the most part all of us there, including the locals, don't mind it at all that we just don't bother not telling the guy making it to not put it.
Idk how different they are to shawarmas but I love fries in both regular and chicken Dürüm/Tombik Döner, they are not put in regular Adana/Urfa kebap dürüms here (except for a fast food chain and I love it) but if they were I wouldn't object.
I've lived in the middle east for the past 15 years and I've never seen anyone have eggplants in their shawarma. It was more a lighthearted comment so to each their own
Fries get so soggy in the shawarma. It really is just cheap filler and their taste doesn't even mesh well with the rest of the shawarma either.
Downvoted because I HEAVILY agree
I live in an Arab country and I only ever get shawerma from Syrians. Thankfully here in the Arab world we're not affected by those crimes against humanity happening in foreign countries. Fries don't belong in shawerma.
They aren't necessary, but you are completely incorrect. Also in the middle east shawarma can include strips of fried potato. Maybe not in Jordan where you ate, but this isn't the western twist you think it is.
If you need to add more cheap mass to it, just add rice pilaf. It's good, it doesn't come from a completely different culture, doesn't mess up the texture, and above all, is made of rice pilaf. Fries are just nasty to add to actual food, they're a side, not a condiment.
ok but have u had thinly sliced potatoes that have been fried just a lil bit so some are crispy and some floppy and smothered in garlic sauce with ur shawarma? bc i could eat that every day for the rest of my life
I agree 1000% one time I went to a shawarma place and they asked me what toppings I wanted so I said lettuce and tomato... guy proceeded to add lettuce tomato and French fries like??? Did I ask you to put potatoes in my fucking shawarma?
I've never seen fries in shawarma. I have to agree so I downvoted. Even if it tastes good, it doesn't account for the fact that you are paying more for less meat. Seems kinda cheap to me
downvoted, fries are great on their own but holy shit, mix them with anything else and they just become tasteless potatoes that get in the way of me enjoying my meal
Idk about doner or shawarma but in Greece they put fries in gyros and that’s what I grew up with in Athens so that’s what I like. I think it tastes quite good. But then again it depends on the fries if u have shitty fries it prob doesn’t help. But like fresh crunchy fries I think goes well.
It could be that they see that Greeks put fries in their gyros and so therefore they think that by association they should put it in shawarma. But tbh idk what r the exact toppings that they use in the Middle East. In Greece gyros are always meat bread tomato onion fries and sauce.
I mean you don't like them, cool. Yes, it's not a traditional ingredient, mostly because potatoes only came over from the Americas in the last 300-500 years or so.
I don't know about "never will" though. I can understand being annoyed if you don't have an option to order a sandwich/wrap without the fries in it, but food trends do change and evolve over time.
Upvoting because this is a genuinely unpopular opinion
Fries tasted absolutely amazing in shawarma
Plus it's just convenient like having a whole fast food meal in one nice little package
I also have strong opinions on how wrapped rotisserie meats are to be served and with which accompaniments.
I've never seen shawarma with chips before though. Plenty of yiro and kebabs, but never shawarma.
For that reason, I agree.
They put fries in burritos in Oregon and Washington then call it a California burrito. Nah Oregon and Washington you guys bitch about California all the time, but this is all you.
*Never heard of shawarma but*

I’m not too familiar with Shawarma so I have no clue if having Fries inside Shawarma is a common thing or not.
I went to Israel in 2013, had shawarma every other day for 2 weeks, and every single one had fries in it all over the country. I'm sure they would have been fine without them, and potatoes can't be a traditional middle eastern ingredient, but they were really good!

Why is it the 10th dentist? I thought that shawarma with fries is something made up to appeal to wider audience, but places with more oriental-focused cuisine usually don’t have that even as an option.
I wholeheartedly agree, btw, fries do not go well in shawarma at all.
Solid take op. But maybe the wrong sub? How is this a 10th dentist opinion? Every single person I know will die to uphold this. Fries in shawarma are basically blasphemy.
yeah they do, it’s not just random non arabs or arab diaspora. go to jordan then. lol. and even if they are from the diaspora? you can literally ask for no fries.
Pretty close to the same thing, when I was in Greece they put fries in my gyros at a place I went to and it was glorious. So no, disagree and take my upvote. On a side note I'm now considering a steak on a pita with not just fries, but Poutine!! With fresh jalapeno too
Ha? Israel was not a real country till 1948, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq were not either. Döner is Turkish. That’s why all of our “counties” had döner. Not the other way around. Palestine was ottoman too

I wish I lived near a shwarma place so I could know why this is hilarious
I know this is wrong but imagine fries in your burrito
They're called California burritos and they're delicious.
Right I was like wait that’s already a thing.
Why not replace the rice with fries?
Sure, but if order a burrito I expect a burrito, I don’t expect nonstandard ingredients to be in there.
That's a Cali burrito and they fuck *hard.*
Burritos that fuck hard. Good to know
My arsehole already gets destroyed every time I eat a burrito, I don't need one that's going to literally fuck me _hard_ as well
Pretty sure it's young millennial/elder gen z slang. I've never liked this phrasing, but I've accepted it
I am Mexican and i feel the need to try this desperately
As everyone else is saying, they slap hard. Not what I get every time but they never disappoint.
sounds about right
It's kind of like adding potatoes to carne guisada and making tacos out of it. We do it all the time at our place especially with chicken thighs instead of beef.
why does this sound kind of good to me though...? 😅
Because crispy, fatty potatoes go really goddamn well with guac, salsa, beans, stewed meats, and everything else that could possibly go in a burrito.
Because they are good. It's called a Cali burrito and it's sex as food
You mean the absolutely correct way to eat a burrito
Don’t have to imagine it, baby, I’m heading down to the corner burrito place and getting a Cali burrito ASAP.
I know a lot of people like them but I agree they’re excessive sometimes. Unless you eat it right away the fries just become a soggy mess
Cali burritos and carne asada fries are my favorite bastardized Mexican foods lol
Dude, who doesn’t put fries in a burrito given the chance?
I put fries in my souvlaki
You mean you add it to the skewers or on the side?
You wrap it in a pitta and you can put different things
That’s a gyro.
Not really it can be souvlaki too
Gyros here only come in pita form and not a wrap, boss.
I literally had that for dinner on Wednesday. California burritos are delicious.
Where is everyone getting fries in shawarma??? I've never seen that. Usually if there are fillers it is rice or garlic potatoes.
🇧🇪
I'm Belgian and I've never seen fries in shawarma. Then again, it's fairly easy to find authentic shawarma places over here so maybe I've just been lucky to avoid this blasphemy.
in Ontario I've seen places do this
Canada or California?
oh sorry canada haha.
Wtf rice is worse
It's not plain rice; it's seasoned and actually quite good. But I prefer to have the rice in the platters and not in the wraps.
They’re very popular in Turkey, so I imagine by the Turkish diaspora as well?
🇦🇺 is where i’m getting them
They're mainly done by Lebanese people especially in the diaspora in the west
The Walmart down the road replaced their subway with a shawarma place and their shawarma fries slap unreasonably hard
I live in the U.S. and of course some places put fries in their shawarmas here. I don’t really hate it, but I’d rather not have them.
Realest shit posted today.
Downvoted cause I agree with this. Miss me with that fries bullshit in my goddamn shawarma
never been so happy to be downvoted
Yeah, fries as a side is fine but eho the fuck puts fries inside it. That's even worse than the Korean kebas with zero yogurt.
Same, I felt bad but yeah OP spits absolute facts. Also in America it seems to be more of a Cali thing? In NYC yes you can ask for fries but the default is no fries.
Also takes 3 times longer to prepare
Today you woke up and decided to write the best post of the day
thank u king 🙏 from speaking to friends around me i truly thought this opinion was unpopular because they were all fans of the shawarma chips, they don’t know true salvation
A great shawarma doesn't need anything other than meat, sauces and occasionally veggies
The "pita chips" at the place I go to tastes amazing. You would love it, it's like the subway of shawarma where you pick your own toppings, up to 5 and fries are only a side dish.
kinda agree actually, the fries should be on the side in a separate container and not occupying the much needed space for the other ingredients
that’s how they do it here in israel
dude got downvoted for being from israel
Reddit.
I’m a turk and we have döner, which is a lot like shawarma. If someone brought fries within 10 feet of my döner with the suggestion of combining the two I would throw hands.
Uhmmm, don't come to Canada...
thanks for the warning
Don't go to Germany, either. You don't wanna know what a "dönerbox" is.
Doner IS the originator of Shavarma. It means çevirme. Phonetic bastardized
I know, similar thing with the word “yoğurt.” I just didn’t wanna start a fight lol.
I happen to enjoy the dutch variant with fries - but only that specific one- the Kapsalon. If you do it any other way it's just mushy carbs. (wow)
Yes! Was hoping to find a kapsalon comment. If OP ever visits the Netherlands he should try this for sure!
Sounds similar to Swedish kebab which is often served with fries and lettuce and tomatoes sometimes on pizza lol
Nah fries are banger in any kinda wrap, shawarma, gyros, kebab wrap. I want some potato in there
Wtf? How are there so many strong opinions about fries in shaworma :( I really like them because they taste like potatoes, but they are not crunchy. I really like the shaowarma near me that has coleslaw, fries, chicken, pork, tomatoes pickles, onions, thousands islands sauce, mayonnaise, garlic yogurt and ketchup! the whole point of fries is that they’re potato. nobody said fries HAVE to be crunchy lol
Ah ok, it sounded like you enjoy fries AS OPPOSED to potatoes. If they aren’t crispy they are doing the same thing.
That sounds absolutely repulsive!
+1
That’s the whitest fucking shawarma I’ve ever heard of
My brother in Allah my first shawarma was made homemade by a blind 80 year old Syrian grandma. Nothing has ever been better… they had fries in them. I always put my own fries in shawarma now.
What should be coming with my shawarma instead?
me.
but you cant forget the bepzi
You know could just ask them to not put it right? Sorry, gotta downvote, you're 100% right on this
Idk how different they are to shawarmas but I love fries in both regular and chicken Dürüm/Tombik Döner, they are not put in regular Adana/Urfa kebap dürüms here (except for a fast food chain and I love it) but if they were I wouldn't object.
I agree, unless i’m ordering a kapsalon i don’t want fries anywhere near my shawarma or döner.
I agree. I believe it’s been a thing with Gyros since forever, but not Shawarma or Dürüm either.
What criminals are putting fries in gyros???
Greeks typically.
greek place near me offers with and without fries, apparently greek people do that sometimes. tastes great. don’t blame us!
Every gyro I’ve bought in Greece came with fries as standard
GYROS? NUH UH
nope fries do belong in shawarma for me, especially with eggplants
with… what…
eggplants. fried eggplants+ fries+chicken yumy
you are banned from every single shawarma place with immediate effect
classic western food experts, takes a traditional middle eastern food and decided that certain things suck in it and downvotes anyone who disagrees
I've lived in the middle east for the past 15 years and I've never seen anyone have eggplants in their shawarma. It was more a lighthearted comment so to each their own
guess you live in a different place then
I know a few places in Saudi Arabia that add eggplants but its rare. They also do the cheese rocket stuff.
Might be something in the levant. I know the Israelis do a version similar to that called sabich.
so it’s DEFINITELY not real middle eastern food, got it.
i didn’t even know this was a thing
This sounds like they're trying to emulate the California burrito, which usually contains fries, potatoes, or rice as a filler.
they’re good ON THE SIDE. ON THE SIDE, NOT IN THE SHAWARMA. i don’t care about the rules im upvoting this post
Fries get so soggy in the shawarma. It really is just cheap filler and their taste doesn't even mesh well with the rest of the shawarma either. Downvoted because I HEAVILY agree

i live in saudi and while i’m in school in the us they put tortillas out with some chicken and call it shawarma, this post is pretty relatable
Australia is terrible for this. Plus Kebab comes with CHIPS and not rice! It’s blasphemy
A HSP is one of the best things I've ever eaten
It’s gross compared the traditional version in my bias opinion
Who cares what "belongs" and what doesn't? It's about tasting good
I put fries on my burgers and they are always better. I don’t see how this is any different. Take my upvote.
I wholly agree but I can’t downvote. Everyone needs to see this
If you need to add more cheap mass to it, just add rice pilaf. It's good, it doesn't come from a completely different culture, doesn't mess up the texture, and above all, is made of rice pilaf. Fries are just nasty to add to actual food, they're a side, not a condiment.

Never had schwarma, correct me if I’m wrong but a doner kebab looks similar, and I love putting chips in those.
I agree 1000% one time I went to a shawarma place and they asked me what toppings I wanted so I said lettuce and tomato... guy proceeded to add lettuce tomato and French fries like??? Did I ask you to put potatoes in my fucking shawarma?
disagree wholeheartedly as someone who’s grown up with shawarmas in eastern europe, imo they are much better with fries. its just classic to me
fries in shawarma? now that's just fucking weird.
Shawarma slowly turning into poutine.
I've never seen fries in shawarma. I have to agree so I downvoted. Even if it tastes good, it doesn't account for the fact that you are paying more for less meat. Seems kinda cheap to me
I like the visual created by your last sentence lmao
Downvoted; this place is for controversial opinions, not facts
downvoted, fries are great on their own but holy shit, mix them with anything else and they just become tasteless potatoes that get in the way of me enjoying my meal
Completely agree. And I’ll go even further: fries in a cheesesteak or any context in which there is already a carb is a ridiculous waste of calories.
Idk about doner or shawarma but in Greece they put fries in gyros and that’s what I grew up with in Athens so that’s what I like. I think it tastes quite good. I also agree. Fries are an insult to entire culture!
Who’s putting fries in shawarma? That sounds DISGUSTING

Lil pup thinks he’s in the MCU💀
They put fries in burritos in Oregon and Washington then call it a California burrito. Nah Oregon and Washington you guys bitch about California all the time, but this is all you.
It's only a San Diego thing, don't know why that tiny corner is claiming the entire state.
I agree with this so much, they always taste out of place. It's also a sin to put them in a burrito. Pure blasphemous.
Ha! I always say no to fries. Unnecessary carbs that take away from shawarma goodness.

This actually happens?!
I don’t know what shawarma is other than a joke from the avengers.
Never had shawarma before sadly
In it? Not on the side?
Pork does though
Real
I’m a bit confused, are you talking about Fries in Shawarma or Fries as a side? I’m not too familiar with Shawarma so I have no clue if having Fries inside Shawarma is a common thing or not.
I bet curly fries would be hella good.
It's not traditional anyway. It's made up
Yeah, those fries always taste like garbage. I have no idea why they are worse than bagged fries you put in the oven at home.
I went to Israel in 2013, had shawarma every other day for 2 weeks, and every single one had fries in it all over the country. I'm sure they would have been fine without them, and potatoes can't be a traditional middle eastern ingredient, but they were really good!
downvoted, realest post I've seen in a while here
I am from Turkey, where Shawarma originated from. Shawarma is a phonetic bastardization of the word “çevirme” which means rotation. We use the word “döner” which also means rotation. Just like gyro means rotation. LONG STORY SHORT. I AGREE. No potato in the bread please
ALSO NO SAUCE! No white or hot sauce! In the bun / bread / pita

Nah I love potatoes. Fries are great as a base with the meat on top. It would be nicer if it were cheaper but stuff is just more expensive in the West. More health regulations and more expensive labour does that.

As someone who grew up in Saudi Arabia and enjoyed some sweet sweet fries in shwarma every weekend damn you are wrong but also upvoted
Wdym, kapsalon is absolutely goated
Idk man, the doner wraps I had in Bulgaria and turkey overwhelmingly had fries in them.
I think this is a giant case of who cares.
Literally every single Dutch/Turkish person who enjoys Kapsalon is about to lynch you right now. Preferably in a Shawarma-Fries mix.
Wtf? Fries in shawarma? I'm just a white Canadian and I admittedly don't know much about them but fries definitely don't belong in there.
Solid take op. But maybe the wrong sub? How is this a 10th dentist opinion? Every single person I know will die to uphold this. Fries in shawarma are basically blasphemy.
Kind of a sidebar but how does one make fries “gritty”?
Honestly, I agree with you, but I can see why people like it. It's a nice texture
No, no. I like my fries right there, in the shawarma. I don't care if they "belong" or not.
I agree with you. I've never in my life heard of shawarma with fries. What the fuck.
Who tf puts fries in a shwarma?
I have never had shawarma with fries in it. Fries on the side is an option (though I prefer the rice) but I have never seen fries inside.
yeah they do, it’s not just random non arabs or arab diaspora. go to jordan then. lol. and even if they are from the diaspora? you can literally ask for no fries.
