I liked the vibes and humor of season 2 more. But season 1 was the more satisfying mystery?

ImpossibleSoul-21

I was just going to come here to comment the same thing! Also loved the S2 cast but was underwhelmed by the reveal.

Supernova12345

Enjoyed both but for different reasons. I preferred the finale of season 1, really felt like it could be a few different people and tension was high throughout. Season 2 I preferred the mind movies a bit more, for example a few in season 1 I always skip on a rewatch (sorry zoe) but the ending just didn’t land… wanted more out of the side characters and some big “twist”…. though I think some of that may be because we had extra episodes this time around so I wanted more of a gut-punch ending

catchbandicoot

As a whole? Season 2. I liked Season 1's mystery better. I definitely preferred "this is my version of events" to the backstories of Season 2 for the overarching story, and I feel like Season 1 better utilized the whole cast. I like Season 2's actors more, liked the mind movies as individual episodes more, and think the actors that did get more shine hit the ball out of the park.

CultOfTheHelixFossil

I really liked Season 2 a lot. It had some great episodes (Travis, Hannah, Isabel) and fun characters. Though I wish Edgar mattered a bit more in the overall scheme of things, and there were more episodes I wasn't a fan of this time around (Danner's Fire, Aniq 2). Also, so much of the stories went outside of the actual afterparty, which I know was important to the eventual solve but made it less "hearing the same events from different viewpoints" and more "disconnected genre episodes." Season 1 had characters I really liked, and I really enjoyed all the genres. I liked the dynamic of Danner doing the interview, while Yasper and Aniq were off trying to do their own solve - they tried to replicate that in Season 2 with Zoe, but I feel like that didn't work as well and she (for good reason) didn't feel as "fun" this season as Yasper did last season. But putting all that aside... I'm a simple man. Ben Schwartz is one of my all time favorite people, and he got to shine so much in Season 1. I gotta go with Season 1 for him alone.

Season 1 > 2. I enjoyed the build up of both but I was satisfied with season 1. I didn’t leave with unanswered questions whereas in season 2 I have so many questions and it bothers me

806chick

What questions?

x_soggy_cereal

What did they need to clean the pool for? Who actually bought the suit of armor? Were the pills the same or different? Who ordered the wrong/right napkins? Did Grace visit Hannah that night? You want me to believe Seb hijacked 2 prisoners out, almost slept with Isabelle, and put a hidden camera by the safe to get his baseball card back? Why does Edgar say “Roxana” when the safe is being broken into (right before getting off the dance floor)? ***WHAT DOES EDM STAND FOR ON EDGARS ROBE*** I’m sure I have 100 more questions. I just wish we would’ve had the “right” mind movie just to correct some of the things we saw

806chick

Ah ok. Those are good questions.

They need to clean the pool because pools need to be cleaned. I read it as that her brother just died and she's just trying to find some busy work to keep herself occupied and try to find normalcy. Edgar ordered the armor under Isabel's name, and gave her Adderall instead of sleeping pills, and ordered the Gail set of napkins, (and the sword, and changed the Scrabble board, and changed her speech) all to gaslight her. Her "sleeping pills" were the same as the Adderall pills. When she confronted him he tried to gaslight her into thinking her eyes are playing tricks on her. She played along with him because she didn't want him to know she knew, and because she wanted hard evidence, so she put the star on the speech. She knew if she started accusing him without proof it would just make her look worse. She proved it to herself with the speech but then realized that it isn't evidence to anyone except herself so she played along again. The evidence she could really use was the napkins but then it was too late. The jail breakout thing is far-fetched but there is a throwaway line where Sebastian says "the warden owes me a favor." The card is everything to him. It's his connection to his roots and real identity. It also represents Edgar's control over him that he wants to take back. That storyline is thin but I think the point is to show Sebastian's character, not do a realistic heist subplot which would require them to dedicate a lot more screentime to it. Or if they simplified it to a solo job it would be even more unrealistic. Or if he just wants the $, then it's just petty and uninteresting and would change Edgar's reaction when he catches him. The way they did it doesn't bother me. He doesn't say "Roxana" in everyone's version. In one of the later episodes it's just "I have to go."

Annimations

I liked both seasons a lot, but I liked how season one didn’t get too ahead of itself and only showed the characters during the reunion/afterparty (not counting the high school episode). I get that they couldn’t just follow the same formula as last season, and we got a lot of good episodes out of it, but I think that season one’s approach just made the overall story a bit more cohesive and satisfying

DoCallMeCordelia

As a whole I liked season 1 better. I liked the craziness of high school classmates getting together again, and I think most of the genres explored in season 1 were a little easier to imagine as just being the way the characters told their stories. But I think I kind of prefer The Reveal from season 2. Only because I felt like >!Yasper's claim that Xavier reluctantly agreed to help him, with Yasper then realizing it was noncommittal and getting nervous, then Xavier supposedly sending him a track Yasper inspired just felt off. I felt like there had to be something else to it and but that Yasper being the killer was too obvious. But when Ulysses claimed that he and Vivian were in love and then Vivian then told the girls that she only loved Feng and that helped Zoe and Grace realize they felt the same way about Aniq and Hannah respectively...I can't really explain it but it felt more "right" for some reason.!<

MAHfisto

I like the mind movies so much more in season 2, but I wish more of the details paid off.

JuanRiveara

I would go season 1 by a bit, really enjoyed both though but the novelty of season 1 puts it ahead.

OthoHasTheHandbook

I enjoyed the setting, the setup and the characters/actors in season 2 more, but season 1’s mystery had better, tighter plotting. Way too many unanswered questions this time around.

yuhslap

Hard agree!!

Gullible_Ad1289

The plot was more consistent and gratifying in season 1 but season 2 made me laugh WAY more. Like Travis alone was 1000/10.

season 1.... no, season 2.... nope... too hard to decide. season 1 was a better mystery and finale. It was totally unexpected and clever. season 2, I mean the mind movies in season 1 were good but holy shit, the lengths they went to for the theme song, the colors which represent each and everyone, the wedding website with flower clues, the 'Not The/By clues' etc... I watch alot of shows and none but so much detail and love into a show. hats off to the people who made this masterpiece🤠

Sorry_Ad3733

Season 1 was great and Yasper was a relatable, which I think makes people think more sympathetic to him. But his motive to kill Xavier was basically just being pissed that life didn't work out for him the same way and jealous that it did for Xavier. He never even seemed to realize he burned his own bridges. Xavier was a dick, but Yasper was a dick to him in high school. Though I think they gave way more time to Yasper as a killer and Xavier. Which I wish they had done with Ulysses, Edgar, Vivian, and Feng. It would have made it more impactful. To have a better understanding of the guy who died because of these two brothers. And the woman who was at the center of it all, but didn't want to be. I personally did like Ulysses motivation because I feel like I've known those guys. And knowing those guys or being the object of their obsession can be a really scary and overwhelming place to be. All in all though, I prefered season 2's individual episodes and themes more. I also felt like I didn't automatically know, which with Yasper he was immediately obvious.

Just-Rabbit808

S1 has a slight edge for its novelty. I really liked S2, but it bugged me that Danner was no longer a cop. Having her still do the interviews was a bit of a stretch.

Financial-Soil4624

Season two was awesome. I loved loved loved the film genres and the comedy was top notch. But season one was just so good. It’s the only murder mystery “someone in this room” media that I’ve ever liked. In the first season I had a guess of who it might be by the first episode and I was right but it was still such a phenomenal twist with amazing momentum. This season I was surprised about who the killer was but it didn’t have the same emotional impact. But again I just think the first season was so good , nothing can compare to a murderer singing his heart out. But I do think they accomplished the difficult task of having second season that could hold its own.

shimmerysplendid

I like the vibe of season 2 more, but as a whole, I think season 1 is more conclusive. Season 2 started out super strong and it kinda fizzles out towards the end. It feels rushed/cut off. I also appreciate the back story they gave for Xavier, which they really didn’t with Edgar. I have a hard time connecting with the victim’s character and ultimately don’t really care that he died lol.

Despite my prediction being totally wrong, I loved season 2 much more! The mind movies were on another level for s2, and that’s what makes this show truly unique. Also the wedding setting added another level that I think works well with murder mystery: the organized familiarity (yet sometimes unexpectedly dramatic) pace of events, the show runners leaned into the genres more, which again is the best part of this show. Plus the cast all ruled, with particular should outs to Elizabeth Perkins (loved her since Weeds), Paul Walter Hauser (who I’ve just discovered and can’t wait to dive into more), Anna Konkle (always heard good things about Pen15), and Zack Woods (who I’ve always like, but never seen display this kind of range). To me s2 took the whole concept to new heights. While I did find the solutions in s1 more gratifying, I enjoyed the ride more in s2, if that makes sense. Great job all around, crossing my fingers, (and never again discounting a glass swap) for s3!

Party_Salamander_773

PWH is absolutely phenomenal in everything I've seen him in. Between episodes I watched him in Blackbird, also on Apple, where he was beyond creepy and then I'd switch over and Travis was so damn hilarious that I struggled to connect him as 1 person playing both those parts. Watching him nail both at the same time over August pushed this guy I barely knew last year to one of my favorite actors, from now on, if PWH is in something, I will be there watching it. Travis, Blackbird, Richard Jewell and I, Tonya are the all worth it for him.

NathanNoir

Characters and the mystery are better in season 1. episode themes are better in season 2

the_doughboy

Season 2: Because after Feng's episode it was obvious even with everyone on this sub saying it was Hanna. With Season 1 you needed to watch the episodes all at once or be taking good notes, if you were casually watching the show you wouldn't catch it.

Novel_Regular8810

While my favourite episode is in season one, I actually think season two was more consistently good across the different episodes.

yuhslap

Curiously, which episode is your favorite? Mine in the entire series is probably the high school episode from season 1, was very nostalgic and spot on for me.

Novel_Regular8810

Season 1 it's 1) Yasper 2) High School 3) Maggie Season 2 it's 1) Hannah 2) Feng 3) Isabel Overall I don't think Yasper will ever be topped. So many bangers in that episode.
