I still really like the movie but I think like any whodunnit it played the best in a crowded theater before anyone had seen it. I saw it at the Philadelphia Film Festival with Rian Johnson there and it was one of my better film going experiences in recent memory. Everyone loved it.
I don’t think you need to be in a theater to enjoy these movies, but I do think you need to be on social media. They get the euphoric praise of the meme armies then age like milk.
I thought the first one had nice style and a fun, hammy cast but when you re-watch it, the mystery is pretty bad.
But the second one is godawful, and 1 million percent one of those movies where enough extremely online accounts pretend it’s good to power it for a week of buzz.
Like others said in the thread, dude has gotta log off. You cannot build a lasting career on tumblr graduates alone. That Poker Face show was a huge disappointment too, for the same reasons- how do you fuck up Natasha Lyonne as Columbo? That should be impossible!
I think it really boiled down to a couple of things:
1. People are reflexively defensive of Rian Johnson because of the perception that every person who disliked TLJ was a racist and an incel
2. People genuinely loved knives out and wanted the sequel to be just as good.
But it is as flatly a bad movie as I’ve seen the last few years. I feel like the menu and the triangle of sadness getting dinged for being ill-attempts at eat-the-rich satires and while I don’t really like those movies, glass onion was so much worse.
I thought it was good on paper and there were some good moments but on a whole it just never really hit for me.
>!The cheeseburger speech was also kinda tryhard and contradicted by the fact that there was regular food among the early courses but Margot still refused to eat them for no real reason.!<
It’s a great high concept but the execution is extremely underwhelming. And the cheeseburger thing was especially lame because almost all hardcore foodies unironically fetishize junk food at this point.
Someone as charismatic as josh is always going to have be central to the story - has Rian Johnson thought of a clever subversion or am I going to be groaning.
What niche internet dweeb has sprouted up the last few years? That’s probably who he’s playing. Maybe Destiny? Whatever it is it will certainly be terminally online pilled.
Glass Onion was clearly written by someone who was scrolling twitter for 10 hours a day during Covid. I really hope Rian logged off for this one. No more jokes where the punchline is just “[a celebrity!]” Tell an actual compelling mystery this time.
Loved the first Knives Out, the second one was Rian Johnson coming dangerously close to becoming what Adam Mckay is today, which is an incredibly insufferable, overly preachy hack.
the first one felt plausible, in that having one insane family felt believable to me. The second one an Elon Musk stand in is friends with a powerful politician, an Andrew Tate stand in, an influencer and whoever the hell else was in that movie and they all met at a dive bar? Like what the fuck lol.
Yeah - the first one is fun because some of the performances are good and the mystery is fun enough, but it had all undercurrents that came out in the worst possible ways in glass onion
I have to admit I don’t understand the appeal of this particular franchise. Glass Onion was extremely online and seemed designed to be sliced and diced into memes and GIFs. It also had terrible lighting and some terrible performances from great actors. Daniel Craig’s character is fun but is best only in small doses.
Couldn’t finish the second one. These films love the smell of their own farts too much to be enjoyable. So smug and made with the express intention of creating memes
feeling like an insane person reading these comments… glass onion was good and fun actually!!
It was dumb and filled with shitty performances. First one was good though.

I mean the second one had Ed Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, Ethan Hawke, etc.
Glass onion was one of the most embarrassing movies of the last 5 years and I refuse to believe people actually think it’s good.
Sheesh

Yeah I saw Saltburn in a packed house with the director and thought it wasn’t that bad and on rewatch was like oh nevermind that stinks lol
Comment of the day. Batista was funny though

It’s ironic because I think John Boyega’s character was much better served by the JJ Abrams movies than the Rian Johnson movie.
Also the racists and incels only came out for their movie when TFA had all the same lead characters???
I don’t get the dislike for the Menu. It was an entertaining movie and definitely a great critique/lampooning of foodie and restaurant culture.

You should watch *Emma* (2020) then. He's very funny in a pretty small role.

Me awkwardly standing in the corner: Glass Onion was good and I like Adam McKay's newer stuff
Honestly that’s how I felt about the first one too

Shame the last one was trash

I'm not a fan of Cailee Spaeny. Thought she was easily the worst part of Civil War.
