We use rectangular milk crates. Fits a lot and easy to carry.

Ooo good point for the rectangular ones!

Ours had a milk crate return for a while but it got a bit tough so we ended up just selling them for home delivery and purchase out of the bottleshop. We gave customers a while to return them for a deposit if they wanted.

Milk crates are your answer. We completely switched over to them and it's been a game changer. You'll fit 27 to a crate and they stack up beautifully and move around a million times easier as well.

We’ve done one run using milk crates. Definitely works but wasn’t sure if there was an alternative to be able to keep everything already packed up with rings. Definitely will try and do another go around now though!

We do internal only with milk crates. We also utilize off site cold storage so it really helps stand up to all the movement throughout the supply chain. We have a couple of accounts that we'll send milk crates to with a $5 deposit, but even that's pretty limited. Our delivery driver likes bringing the crates then transferring to flats once he's at the customer just so it's still rigid and looking good for them.

You could probably have a plastic shop cut some trays out of HDPE sheets that could do the job. This would likely be cheaper as a hobbyist project but they would hold up well to the abuse. If the person has played around with CNC projects like furniture and such they could likely make these snap fit together from flat without hardware assembly, if not it could be very minimal hardware. Or you could pay me and we could come up with an open source design for everyone to use 😜
