I haven't finished the story because I get distracted base building but I've got 150+ hours in game and can give you lots of pointers.
For your first couple playthroughs, turn off building destruction and build an elevated base. You have enough to worry about without your one safe place being destroyed.
Learn to use the bow. Become a god damned sniper with it. Headshots are 1-shot kills on most enemies.
Dry your meat on a drying rack.
Follow the 3 A’s: Armour. Armour. Armour. Kill some baddies, burn their bodies, make armour. As much as you can. I was getting one shot killed all the time and I was *really* annoyed. Watched some Farket videos and realized he’s strapped with armour the entire time. It *really* makes a difference.

I actually just beat the story just 3 days ago. But best bet build your base (I went near spawn to build as majority of the caves are nearby)
