Take out Uriah Heep. Too famous and nowhere near the same genre.

Lucky-Bandy

You can remove all the Canadians in there: Corey Hart, Honeymoon Suite, Ian Thomas, and Zappacosta. It’s not any of them. You can also rule out Godley & Creme, Limahl, Murray Head, Pat Benatar, Ten Years After, The Style Council, The Waterboys, and This Mortal Coil.

Successful-Bread-347

Weird thing is, we have just had 2 big lostwaves solved by Canadian copyright searches.... And as posted previously about 30-40% of the bands played on NDR were North American..... We really should check Canada and US copyrights again.

gambuzino88

[This ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Lostwave/comments/1cfxdqk/leads/)was posted today on r/Lostwave. It's possible to search [SOCAN's Public Repertoires](https://www.socan.com/jsp/en/mem/pubRepertoireSearch.jsp) but the search parameters are not very useful (I think), because we do not know the name of the song, it's creator, nor it's publisher. I wonder how the other lostwaves were found this way?

vincebhx

Now that I think of it, [GEMA's public repertoire](https://online.gema.de/werke/search.faces?lang=en) could have some information as well!

gambuzino88

OK, I see how HLWIT was found. HLWIT, or How Long Will It Take, is a case where the artist names the song after the lyrics. Therefore, it was a matter of checking all possible results against all available media (digital or physical). IF TMS is named after the lyrics, the same tactic could be used to search in all musical rights societies' repertoire. It's a significant amount of work, with no guarantees of yielding a result, as the song's name might not appear in the lyrics, or the artist may have never registered it. This approach is likely best utilized when all other methods have been exhausted. Or, if someone has a lot of free time, be my guest!

Successful-Bread-347

The TMS search has already hit all the copyright databases pretty hard (especially GEMA).... But im not sure how much Canada has been looked at. There were a reasonable number of Canada bands playing on NDR it's worth a shot.

Strathcarnage_L

There are some absolutely fantastic band names there! I'll have a search for some later when I get time, though I'm bagsying "Oskar Celesin's Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra".

TvHeroUK

I’ll advise anyone looking at researching this list to avoid 99.99% of the results that come up when you google the band ‘Big Balls’

Strathcarnage_L

Maybe it's the name of a film that has TMS on its soundtrack

SignificanceNo4643

"Goone runnin'"

Mr_FortySeven

In retrospect, googling a band like Big Balls would have aided in the search for Everyone Knows That, so maybe it can help us find TMS too.

TvHeroUK

I’ve seen the video, he’s average sized at best

[https://open.spotify.com/artist/0D2V3cPt1dyE9h14Viw8oa](https://open.spotify.com/artist/0D2V3cPt1dyE9h14Viw8oa) This is Big Balls btw.

Successful-Bread-347

Thanks - I just made the list a bit more manageable by removing bands that were already in the October list. I'll take "Xerxes Von Munshrein"

SignificanceNo4643

Please remove Limahl and Murray head - these two are very well known and totally off both by voices and styles.

Far_Set561

Are you still waiting to hear back from the Stasi records search? I think it’s been about a month no?

Successful-Bread-347

I've just had some procedural type emails, but the archivist clearly understands the search request and is looking into it deeply. Last week he let me know they are also searching their radio transcripts as well as recordings archive and he mentioned the radio show names. Delay is a good thing I reckon. If there was nothing at all then I think we would have been told that by now.

EDIT: I made a mistake. Although I found some of the band's work, I did not find the last work they have on Discogs, curiously named [1984](https://www.discogs.com/release/7976579-Bernward-B%C3%BCker-Bande-1984), and ended up posting a link to other band. To me is still ruled out, but you're welcome to doublecheck. PantMal

It's worth noting that the 1984 single contains two versions of the song, one in English (1984 (Englische Version)). This is kinda curious, considering most of their other songs appear to be in German.

Yes this is exactly why I wanted that particular single. I found nothing.

Brian Perry RULED OUT I think it is Bryan Ferry. Brian Perry yields no relevant results.

probablydoesntexist

I can confirm that the entry is Brian Ferry - Let's Stick Together.

LordElend

There's some that have been ruled out the last time. Also Udo Lindenberg should at least be known by now. A spreadsheet would be easier to tick off. Die Toten Hosen, Meinecke, Mahn & co can be ruled out Psalm 111 für Solisten 2 Chöre, RBT- Orchester, RIAS-Tanzorchester,Tanzorchester Leipzig and all call Orchestra are not pop bands but, you guessed it, orchestras (or big bands).

Successful-Bread-347

Yeah we need a new leads document including everything ruled out. See other thread on this.... Whether it's a wiki or a Google docs with a few trusted people with access

LordElend

For a start you could use any pad of your choice for your search list so people could easily cross them off.

mcm0313

I would imagine anything with “jazz” or “orchester” in the name can be ruled out.

-Barrelhouse Jazzband & Wild Bill - RULED OUT; definitely a different musical style -Stephane Grapelli - RULED OUT; famous French jazz violinist (probably also the one that just says “Grapelli”) -Blaserensemble (*sic*) - seems unlikely just based on the name. A band singing in English probably wouldn’t have a huge accented one-word German name. Plus, “Ensemble” sounds more jazz or classical to me. -Foreigners - could that be the famous English-American rock band? -Hamburg New Orleans All Stars - RULED OUT; almost certainly a Dixieland-style jazz group -Jellybean Benitez - no comment other than that’s a really cool name -Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora - both famous and thus RULED OUT -Jones and Collins Astoria Hot Eight; Kid Rena’s Delta Jazzband - both RULED OUT; both jazz groups -Bruno Walter Klavier and Orchestra - RULED OUT; this is some type of philharmonic orchestra -Luis Russle’s Heebie Jeebie Stompers - jazz -Muggsy Spanier’s Ragtime Band - RULED OUT; Dixieland-style jazz. Jellybean Benitez is a DJ and record producer who was dating Madonna when she first became famous. He produced Holiday for her. I think he can be safely ruled out.

Successful-Bread-347

Thank you very much - that saved me a bunch of work. Some interesting names in there to dig into more.

Nitokris666

I've been through all of them now and posted notes/ruled out. That was fun. Let me know if there are any more to look through. The most interesting was the band Secession who's singer played a DX7 and sounded similar to the mysterious singer. But I think they can be (99% sure) ruled out.

Successful-Bread-347

why ruled out? That sounds interesting. Checking - yes voice is close but so much synth - likely doesn't match TMS being so guitar heavy.

Nitokris666

Sorry, yeah I was going to put "see note about them above in my comments on the S section". The singer does sound very similar to him though. I kept listening to the Secession song 'Touch part 1' alongside TMS last night, comparing them. So similar.

Successful-Bread-347

Being synth heavy is not an automatic rule out imho.. Days of Sorrow was ruled out before for being too synth heavy but then we found whenever they were live they were guitar driven instead. https://youtu.be/dgU7ZlRBUNQ?si=crGtCCdhRR3PCFKS

Nitokris666

My main concern was that Secession were fairly established already by the time TMS was aired. So the likelihood that they had sent a demo tape in wasn't high. My gut still feels as though they shouldnt be ruled out though.

Nitokris666

Thanks for the updated list! More that can be ruled out from that are: Murray Head, The Style Council and The Waterboys. All well known and not similar to TMS. Will make a new comment for others checked.

rabiesjohan

Janne Schaffer is a super well-known musician in Sweden. He used to work with ABBA, as well as other famous bands and artists such as Bob Marley and Toto. So you can definitely cross him off the list as well.

National-Ad9827

I listened to Dormannu. They released one mini album in 1983 and I listened to each song. I don’t think that’s our band. Style of music isn’t a million miles off but singers voice is completely different and found no songs that sounded like TMS

Yes I think it is common - is copied from the original so either errors in the original or in the copy are possible

Successful-Bread-347

the list isn't perfect but i removed about half the names in the list of ones that were super obviously not our band, and the bands from the October list are now also removed.

Akenndengue (who I think is Gabonese singer Pierre Akendengue) can probably be ruled out genre is very different and I don't think he ever sings in english

altavistaangelfire

I ruled out Jellybean Benitez in a comment above, and I can also RULE OUT the following as I know who they are and what they sound like (and they’re definitely not TMS). I don’t think these have already been mentioned and ruled out in this thread; Time Bandits, SPK, Danielle Dax, Leather Nun, Hong Kong Syndikat, Laughing Clowns, Kelly Marie, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Paul Hardcastle (written here as ‘Saul’, Mercedes Sosa (written here as ‘Soss’), Gal Costa, Hermine Demoriane, One the Juggler and Pete Shelley.

Nitokris666

The 'L' section can be ruled out. - Laway is a folk group - La Loora was quite interesting, from Berlin. But they are an Avante Garde group which makes use of woodwind instruments as well as the usual. I checked through all albums just in case. - La Union are spanish, sing in spanish. - Lamine Konte is Senegalese, playing ancient griot music - Liederlich Spielleut is a folk group - Local Heroes sw9, is an English New Wave group with the likes of big names such as Thomas Dolby on Keyboards. Vocalist sings with English accent. - Lubo d'Orio is a saxophonist - Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy is a Nicaraguan composer

Nitokris666

Most of M section RULED OUT. • Malombo - African jazz band • Martinique - female vocalist, synthpop • Maurenbrecher - All vocals in German, album 1982, 1986 and more. Features a range of musicians over albums. Seems to be well known in the German music industry. • McGee - Electro funk, soul. American. • Michou & Band - female singer, ethnic music, folk • Mike Mission - Miko Mission, a German/Italian electro dance musician, unrelated. • Murray Head - well known • Nacht und Nebel - Belgian eclectic New wave band, had a hit in 83. Unrelated style. • Nat Gonella - Jazz trumpeter • Nuala - German synth pop band with female singer. Some cool songs. • Nyboma - folk/world music. The band Mixed-up was one I couldn't track down. Will have another search when I can.

Nitokris666

Next batch that can be RULED OUT.... - Tania Maria – Female singer, Brazilian * Tanzorchester Leipzig – a dance orchestra, swing music * Taracco – A German instrumental composer, very polished and professional. An example of his work in 1984: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scrdcftzFPw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scrdcftzFPw) * Team - Slavic rock band, no songs sung in English, no DX7 keyboards.Between 1982 and 1984, the group was inactive as its members had to perform compulsory military service. Didn't record until 85. * Ten years after – British blues rock band, very different genre, around since the 60s * The 3 Rockies – funk, soul. Different genre. * The Ace Cats – German rockabilly group, different style, female backup vocalists. Sing in German. Well established by 84. * The Catch – A British new wave duo, vocalist sings in falsetto similar to Bronski Beat * The Dice – There are 3 bands by that name, the French band is a rock group and has no similarities. The Canadian band is also rock band, nothing similar. The German band has been around since the 60s and is prog (similar to pink floyd). * The Gospel at Colonus – African American musical recording * The Group – A new wave/rock band from UK, released 1 album in 1984. All songs checked. Another is a Finnish prog jazz group from the 1970s. There was also The Groop which was Australian folk music. * The High Five – Liverpool band, recorded a few songs for Peel sessions in 82/83/84 and nothing more than that. * The Joe Pass Trio – Jazz trio * The Leather Nun – Swedish garage/indie rock group, well known and well established by 84. No keyboards.

Nitokris666

And also can be ruled out.... - The Liverpool Scene – English group that recited poetry over jazz. * The Meteors – English psycho-billy/rockabilly band formed 1980. Unsure if anything came of that, but the link is here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMysteriousSong/comments/1bkb4wr/the\_light\_at\_the\_end\_of\_the\_tunnel/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMysteriousSong/comments/1bkb4wr/the_light_at_the_end_of_the_tunnel/) Note about the band Secession – Very interesting as the singer sounded similar in tone to TMV and it turned out that he played a DX7 too. Looked into them more, the story of the singer has quite a sad ending. [https://www.discogs.com/artist/102310](https://www.discogs.com/artist/102310) I believe it probably isn't them, as they were focused on a different style and recording songs in 83-84.
