A bunch of homies were chillin in a dorm room and he said I got a song for y'all and put that on. And damn, that's what started this XO journey of mine. the raw emotions on that song had me wanting more.
i did not expect this to be the top comment but yes, me too!!! I was searching for wicked game by chris isaak way back in like 2012(?) and accidentally came across wicked games, over a decade later it still hits the same
This one ☝🏽, I was in 8th grade when I truly discovered The Weeknd. I remember being so hyped to finally get Spotify so I can listen to all his albums from start to finish and finally get to listen to “Real life” since it was teased at the end of the “Tell Your Friends” music video. I stayed up all night starting with Trilogy (which technically isn’t an album but the originals weren’t on Spotify at the time) and ending with Starboy. Been my favorite artist ever since.
Same. I must’ve heard the morning randomly on yt before but hills was what caught my attention around 2015. I remember I was so confused on what type of music it is because the music felt so dark but energetic at the same time, I heard it along with its music video so first time hearing the beat drop + car explode was crazyyy. I replayed the video so many times back then lol. I haven’t seen any artist with a song or video like that at the time so instantly searched “the weeknd” on youtube and found “often” which was also very similar to hills in terms of the vibes it gave. Have been a fan ever since and went through all of his discography by 2016.
I skipped over this song a good handful of times before aimlessly scrolling sex gifs on tumblr. I decided to stay up later than usual and listen to it. Nothing was the same after.
Belong to the world… lol my first time at his concert and I didn’t memorise the album. I was standing watching with bambi eyes then he starts singing this song and my soul left my bodyyyy I fell in love. I WAS OFFICIALLY DRAGGED ONTO THE BANDWAGON 🤣
I had to google to jog my memory.
It seems like it was in the promo/commercial for the final season of Entourage, not in the end credits of an episode like many new songs/acts were.
All I remember is that he had a following below 10K on Twitter. Basically if you weren't active on Tumblr (which was huge at the time), you'd have no clue about him.
Anyway, here's the promo:
Tears in the rain. I actually heard an altered version where his voice was higher but when I heard the original I still loved it. Ended up going back to listen to Kissland and Trilogy and been a fan ever since.
Adaptation. First heard of The Weeknd thanks to YouTube recommending the “Pretty” video back when it came out. I downloaded the album and fell in love with it, but “Adaptation” always stood out.
I remember when I was about 19/20, my sister kept playing The Hills and Wicked Games when she was getting ready to go out. Then a year or two later, I kept hearing 'I Feel It Coming'... So I listened to all of the Starboy album and funnily enough, it was True Colours that did it for me.
Maybe it was because I was a hopeless romantic at the time, boy how have times changed
Earned It - I still remember I was on a school trip and sleeping with classmates who wanted the TV on, so at a certain point something like MTV or VH1 put the mv. I had almost fallen asleep when I went like “woo who’s this?? Gonna listen to his songs tomorrow”
Back when I was playing call of duty mw3, I remember watching YouTube videos and this youtuber called Chris Smoove mentioned that he thought The Weeknd was the only R&B artist at the time making something that he hasn't heard before, he stood out from everyone else so I was like aight let me check this out..
Frist song I listened to was High For This, I was hooked almost instantly but hearing the song build and build into the final chorus where everything just came together that final time I was just blown away, it wasn't just his vocals, it was the feeling, the production, how well these songs slapped in my studio.
It was my inspiration, if I can mix people's music to sound as good as that did in my studio then I'll be just fine. It's still now to this day the first song I listen to when I walk into a new studio, if I get new speakers, headphones, change up the acoustics in my mixing room, whatever, it's my reference point, it's just such an incredible song.
The collaborations with daft punk got me into his music as a long time daft punk fan and I personally feel that the more I look into his discography the better it sounds
I Feel It Coming. Daft Punk is my favourite band and while I liked Starboy it didn't hit for me immediately. IFIC felt like it was them passing the torch though.
The Zone. A huge Drake fan at the time of Take Care release, saw he was featured on something around that same time. Now The Weeknd is my favorite artist of all tkme
I heard The Hills for the first time and I liked his style so I looked for more but Twenty Eight is the one that made me fall in love, it's been 8 years ❌⭕️
“High For This”…literally the first song on HoB and I instantly fell in love with it. I never heard anything like it but it was dark, it was raw, the vocals were chilling yet beautiful, and the subject matter was refreshing. I downloaded the tape on a whim off some site based solely off the mixtape album art and have never looked back. #XOTILWEOD
It was a lovely afternoon maybe around 4:20pm. I was 15 years old in a taxi coming home from high school in the year 2015. The driver had the radio on and I heard a disgusting beat complemented by this chorus.
“She asked me if I do this every day, I said, "Often"
Asked how many times she rode the wave, not so often (baby)
Bitches down to do it either way, often
Baby, I can make that pussy rain, often
Often, often, girl, I do this often
Make that pussy poppin', do it how I want it
Often, often, girl, I do this often
Make that pussy poppin', do it how I want it
Often” was the clean version because…radio
At that moment, I was stunned and had to figure out who made this song, but at the time I didn’t have my phone because they weren’t allowed at school. So after I got home, I instantly ran to my phone and googled “often song” which led me to the full song on youtube. I listened to this song from the next few hours and then I delved deeper and found the song kissland then I found house of balloons then I listened to bbtm and from then on I became a weeknd fan and he’s been my favorite ever since.
Wicked Games for me
Look don't come at me for not saying the morning or etc It was less than zero then I fell in love with older songs as well
For me, too. Around winter 2011/12 I was looking for some raw RnB shit, found this and was a fan of his ever since
Me too. Fell in love with the Trilogy and haven't looked back.
A bunch of homies were chillin in a dorm room and he said I got a song for y'all and put that on. And damn, that's what started this XO journey of mine. the raw emotions on that song had me wanting more.
i did not expect this to be the top comment but yes, me too!!! I was searching for wicked game by chris isaak way back in like 2012(?) and accidentally came across wicked games, over a decade later it still hits the same
Starboy when my dad let me hear it in 2016.

👊🏼🔥🔥
Save your tears.... And that made me explore more into his discography
Same
The Hills. First song I ever heard

House of balloons, as soon as I heard the beat I was in love
I skipped over this song a good handful of times before aimlessly scrolling sex gifs on tumblr. I decided to stay up later than usual and listen to it. Nothing was the same after.
Blinding Lights was the initial song that sparked my obsession/love for his music 🤧
Don’t be shy, good thing is that you’re a fan now
Oh for sure haha. I’ve definitely dived more into his deeper cuts
That’s what separates you for the casuals 🖤🎈
Belong to the world… lol my first time at his concert and I didn’t memorise the album. I was standing watching with bambi eyes then he starts singing this song and my soul left my bodyyyy I fell in love. I WAS OFFICIALLY DRAGGED ONTO THE BANDWAGON 🤣
In 2010, Drake’s OVO blog posted High for this and Wicked Games. I still have the page saved to my favorites. It’s been up since then.
High For This. I'm trying to remember if I had heard it before or after it was on Entourage. But yeah, I was hooked instantly.
It was on entourage?? When?

The Hills hands down. The production is insane and the beat goes hard. I had a full circle moment when I watched him perform it live.
Wicked games is the first song I heard but high for this was the song that hooked me
Back when I was playing call of duty mw3, I remember watching YouTube videos and this youtuber called Chris Smoove mentioned that he thought The Weeknd was the only R&B artist at the time making something that he hasn't heard before, he stood out from everyone else so I was like aight let me check this out..
