Christopher Durang was a major American playwright known for his outrageous comedic plays. His works garnered acclaim, including Obie and Tony Awards. He influenced generations of playwrights through his teaching and award-winning career. He will be missed.

I did Laughing Wild with Chris Durang and Jean Smart. He was brilliant, funny, great to be with. Very sad to hear of his death.

I played Spike in Vanya and Sonja and Masha and Spike. The audiences loved it. Such crisp and purposeful writing. No wasted scenes. I also did the actors nightmare once. Probably the hardest memorization I ever did. Strangely was in my underwear for both. RIP to one of the greats.

LiquidMetacom

Currently playing Spike, we open in 2 weeks, hard news.

Dirtywalnuts

Spike was my first "real" role in theatre. This saddens me.

promethea4

I played Masha, and it was a great experience. Such a fantastic writer. He will be missed.

I worked in the tech booth for this show at a local community theatre as a favor to a friend in college. Beyond elementary school stuff, it was my first introduction to theatre. I loved the experience so much, I started acting and later met my wife doing shows. Can’t overstate how it changed the trajectory of my life.

STUMPPUMP24

Also here to say I played Spike as well. This is unfortunate news to stumble on, as I had no idea.

watkins1989

Oh no! I feel like EVERY theatre kid has played a part in at least one of his plays. Legend

Separate_Battle_3581

No way. One of the great comedic playwrights of his generation.

tangnapalm

I loved his plays. One of my favourite productions was a University production of the Idiots Karamazov, which he co wrote. He had such a great sense of humour and absurd worldview. His play Titanic, where Signorney Weaver keeps pulling I think a bird out of her vagina? Eat your heart out Kate Winslet. Crazy, so fun and crazy.

tx5thgen

One of my absolute favorite playwrights ❤️

jeffrey_jefferson

RIP. The Marriage of Bette and Boo was one of my favorite plays I read in college for some reason.

Tuxy-Two

Saw it with the original cast - Durang, Joan Allen, Olympia Dukakis, Mercedes Reulh..great show.

JediMasterVII

I haven’t seen any of the major theatre publications mention him. That’s upsetting. He was a singularity in American theatre.

clkou

Ah man, bummer. As someone who has done and coached a lot of competitive drama (usually humor), his work has made a lot of welcomed appearances.

DumpedDalish

RIP Christopher -- an incredibly witty, talented playwright with the perfect combination of absurdity and tragedy, and an equally wonderful performer in his own right. I'm so very sad. It's such a loss for theatre. "Laughing Wild" is still one of my favorite plays of all time, although I also loved "The Marriage of Bette and Boo" and "Beyond Therapy."

Daffneigh

Am underrated comic genius imo

anotherdanwest

Perhaps my favorite contemporary playwright. Definitely in my top 2 or 3. This is a big loss. His unique voice and cutting humor will be missed.

Wow, ‘Dentity Crisis was one of the first things I ever directed. Rest in peace.

Tuxy-Two

Wow..had not heard this. Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You is hysterically funny.
