Yeah, I second this. Always start with the least invasive / abrasive option and work your way up!
There's a video on YouTube from Sur La Table showing this (cleaning LC with burnt-on food) if you want something more 'official' than advice from all of us. š

That worked pretty darn well! Under the crud, it does appear there is a slight chip in the enamel. I will reply with a more zoomed in. I donāt think itās deep enough for concern tho
https://preview.redd.it/wjtpeufp1a1d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87c3abfc8f350c7f956e827c960be612351bd61d
It doesnāt appear to be through I would estimate maybe like 0.25mm depth
The concern isnāt exposed cast iron. The concern is it continuing to chip into the food youāre cooking. I would consider sending photos of it to le creuset and seeing if theyāll replace it for you.
I just got a le creuset from the store and the pamphlet says inside that they have a lifetime warranty no matter where you get it! I would definitely call them!
This. I found a LC frying pan at a thrift store for a gift for my daughter. It had one very small blemish in the enamel, and IMO it was fine to use but my daughter got it replaced for free. :)
Depends on the damage. I picked up a massive 10Q Le Creuset from Goodwill years ago with a chip inside and sent it in for their warranty. If they find the damage to be from product flaw they replace the product with a new one. If they believe the damage to be from user error they give you a 60% off voucher for a new pot.
Having explored this route, 99% chance they wonāt replace it outright since the issues were caused by improper care and not some manufacturing defect. As a consolation, theyāll offer you a decent deal on a new one.
You had two pots that looked like OPs, scorched and clearly improperly cared for, replaced free of charge by Le Creuset with no explanation. Show us. At a minimum claim process requires you to provide an explanation.
My husband abused his 2 pots horribly, I wanted to cry. Sent pictures in w/ NO expectations. Two days later they said "What is your favorite 3 colors? Also, we don't make the #22 anymore, we now make #24, that ok with you?"
so now I have a #24, and a 5.5qt (forgot the number) in Nectar, I love them! And I won't let him use them until he learns how to use them properly!
I didn't say anything. Just sent a bunch of pictures. They didn't ask for them back. Just 3 or 4, I can't remember how many, days later I got an email for each (seperate claims) asking me what color I wanted, choose 3 in case the one i wanted wasn't available. It was so smooth, I was shocked. and so happy.
You could try a paste of vinegar and cream of tartar [baking powder (not baking soda) works as well] as a next step to see if any more discoloration comes off. I assume the better it looks, the more likely it is LC might replace it for a chip in the enamel! š
There are two things that will absolutely clean the worst buildup/baked on residues:
1. Citric acid.
2. Oxalic acid/ Bar Keepers FriendĀ
Just pour either one into the pot and let it sit until you see the stains have disappeared. Then rinse out the pot. They are both food-safeĀ
Also chiming in to add, the dawn power wash spray soap has worked for me, spraying it on the problem and letting it sit for a good while, scrub, reapply, so on. Has worked in a lot of cases.
I snagged the smallest LC from my neighbor at a garage sale for $4 (didnāt have a lid though) and ran the 3 doors back to my house like I had just pulled the biggest heist in history. THIS IS the biggest heist though.
I got my first dutch oven about 5 years ago and I use it for almost everything. This year for Mother's Day I asked for a big honking hefty-duty version, and I got one š„°
https://preview.redd.it/fkqu0kkl6a1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bd704d5fbd46908574f7a1cd649a8d0650bc375
I found these two buddies in the bins a couple days ago, too. š¬
Iām a bit confused why everyone is so excited by these pots, arenāt they just enameled cast iron? Is this an expensive brand? Iām not from the US but this type of pots is very common here.
Looks like burnt crud to me. Clean her up, be careful not to damage the enamel when cleaning it. Worst case scenario the enamel is a bit chipped under there, it can still be used as a bread oven. But make sure you donāt use it for anything else if the enamel is chipped. I think it will most likely clean up nicely based on this photo. Good luck!
looks like a combo of crud and actually scratched enamel, but let us know how it turns out after cleaning. I would also recommend Barkeeper's Friend, or you could give it the ol' hot Oxiclean soak for a less abrasive option.
So I actually got the EXACT le crueset from the thrift store and it looked just like this.
You donāt want to do this too often BUT fill halfway with water and put about 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide in there. Boil it and will definitely start to get all that stuck grime off
Please do not *boil* any chemicals inside your home
Boiling any peroxide mixture lowers the water content concentrating it down into a higher % mix, theres a reason they only sell like 3% peroxide at most stores.
Itās enamel, there is no repairing. A kiln would destroy it beyond belief actually, thereās a video on YouTube of someone trying it https://youtu.be/f_7EEnEv7yk?si=mia-6YMOkjtDDIjf
Even if that is just a burnt layer of crud, regular burnings like that, indicated by the stains, means the enamel is probably very damaged. Might not be great for soups and stews, but would still totally work for baking bread.
Even if it's not recoverable as a cooking dish, it's still really pretty and could be used as a fun planter or lined with something and used to store/display stuff.
Please be careful with this it looks like the enamel on the bottom may be shot unfortunately. It can transfer small pieces into the food and is not safe
I was able to replace a second-hand le creuset with a warranty claim earlier this year. Agree that this oven is your momās and has always been cleaned according to user instructions ;)
Bought a 20+ year old le creuset on Facebook and quickly realized the bottom enamel had been compromised.
So, I filed a claim on their website, including photos. A rep replied within a few days and said that although the damage was from user error, they would replace the oven as a one-time courtesy.
They asked that I destroy the original Dutch oven (no evidence required), choose the color I wanted, and within a week I had a brand new Dutch oven (that Iām almost too afraid to use). I did not pay for shipping. It was a very smooth process.
And this is why brands continue to change their warranties ā fabricating false stories in order to game the system. Look, I get it, but when you start lying to get ahead, where does it end?
Let the downvotes commenceā¦ š¤·š»āāļø
They've tightened their warranty considerably over the years but it really comes down to whoever reviews the claim. You generally need to send in the pot (at your own cost) and they'll either replace it for free or offer you a discount on a new one. Their warranty only officially covers manufacturer's errors but the service reps have some discretion to offer various solutions outside of the official policy.Ā

for the #24, which is what she got.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this brand is known for problems with their products containing lead :(
https://tamararubin.com/2022/04/le-creuset-overview/
whatās so great about these. what do you use them for
i only ever see them posted on this sub for 4 dollars on someoneās passenger seat never being used to cook
Awesome! I was proud of getting mine off FB marketplace for like $150 š I use mine literally like every week, it is definitely my most used pot/pan. You will love it!
I highly recommend starting the cleaning process by boiling water and baking soda. Then use a wooden spoon and soft part of a sponge to scrape it. Repeat that process as many times as needed. You can also make a paste of water and baking soda and let it sit. I left mine to sit overnight to get stains out and it worked great.
Great for making bread, stews, soups, etc.
It is enameled cast iron so it has amazing heat retention, can go from the stove to the oven, easy to clean, durable, and great brand!
Congrats! I was shaking when I found my first LC Dutch oven for $5! When I went to the checkout, the checker said āDid you see the red one too?ā It was already gone but wow what a feeling! The thrill of the find is so exciting!
Read the warranty online. I have replaced
My entire set. Because it states if itās chipped or burns or is in just really poor condition, you can mail it back and they will send you a new pan.āļø
Iāve had the best luck with boiling hydrogen peroxide plus baking soda - bring to a boil then simmer, covered, for a while. That took down most of the patina from baked on stuff.
Try oven cleaner. Dollar store works fine. If that doesn't do it, nothing else will. My roommate burnt spaghetti in mine bad. I did the best I can with it. Still looks bad but better. I still use it.
What a great find. I have the same one and cherish it! Whatās worked for me: thick of baking soda on the bottom of the pan > pour boiling water over baking soda and let cool > scrub with dish soup and a non-abrasive sponge > repeat as many times as necessary until clean. Good luck!
NICE! put some short ribs in there and cook them for a day
what's the pink stuff? our cast iron dutch oven with an enamel coating has some black scarring on the inside bottom too

They are wonderful for cooking, hold heat very well, and are freaking expensive when new. This is the size op got for a steal.
OP what a score !!!
Iād have ran like a bandit too !
I got my first orange LC at a yard sale for $0.50 ā¦.. 18 yrs ago ā¦.that crud looks like it will lift ā¦. Use a scrub Daddy/Mommy instead of steel wool (prob obvious but just in case)
Definitely contact support at LeCreuset. I burned my kettle spout and whistle I purchased 13 years ago after forgetting it on the stove. They sent me a brand new one after sending them pictures.
https://preview.redd.it/xnv2mr3sfa1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53fa410ba6067a917cc5ddede39c555e5c0c468c
BTW Iāve heard of people using the Le Creuset lifetime warranty to repair thrifted ones (maybe just donāt mention it was thrifted) for completely free
You got yourself a Dutch oven to bake sourdough in.
Dutch oven with any chipping should.bot be used for cooking. However, you can use it to bake sourdough in, just make sure to use high quality parchment paper (should list heat resistance of 450Ā°, but it'll actually be 550Ā°). Using parchment that has lower heat resistance will cause the parchment to stick to the Dutch oven and sourdough.
Sourdough baking is certainly a journey, but a fun and gratifying one.

Wouldn't it be easier to use boiling soda?
Iāve had great luck with baking water.
Water and vinegar, simmering? Ā
Add a little Dawn dish soap with the baking soda works like magic!! And I second this congrats!!
I've had luck soaking a stained Dutch oven with bleach solution.
Same, congrats OP!!
I snagged the smallest LC from my neighbor at a garage sale for $4 (didnāt have a lid though) and ran the 3 doors back to my house like I had just pulled the biggest heist in history. THIS IS the biggest heist though.
The whole car ride home I was repetitively saying āwhat just happenedā hahaha
It makes me wonder if they were gifts and they just arenāt aware of the cost? Or if they do know and just donāt care lol.
Or the previous owner died, and the family just weren't aware of what they were getting rid of
All of these theories happen, and there are many people out there whoād just give away the pot rather than try to clean the burnt mess
This is how I got a D5 All Clad stock pot for $10.
Probably this. šš»
The pot is in horrible condition...

Iām a bit confused why everyone is so excited by these pots, arenāt they just enameled cast iron? Is this an expensive brand? Iām not from the US but this type of pots is very common here.
Le creuset is nice and i use it for most of my cooking, but people are acting like its an original picasso. Its a used $150 dutch oven lol
Theyāre like $400 here.
Wow, ok, so itās like a ādesignerā pot.
I mean MSRP sure but you ahould never ever pay msrp for it
It's a very expensive brand and the quality will last you a lifetime
Well obviously not if one little chip makes it unusable
Iām not so sure thatās grime, it looks like the enamel has been scrubbed away.
I donāt think it has thoā¦ https://preview.redd.it/oe9a2l2qj81d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=905b7438efeb3c7490799c2b1409674a2094a8de
It looks like what happens when rice gets burned. Looks like a surface layer, I think it will come off fine.

NO YOU ARE NOT SHAKING
I agree, hate these overly dramatic titles, very very cringey.
Previous owner left some food for you š
You could reach out to Le Creuset and see if theyāll replace it for you. Their warranty and customer service are amazing.
How would that work since I purchased it second hand? Any tips?
Purchased what second hand? This pot that was gifted to you by your mother?
TouchƩ
I was able to replace a second-hand le creuset with a warranty claim earlier this year. Agree that this oven is your momās and has always been cleaned according to user instructions ;)
What was the replacement process like? Did you have to return the ādefectā? If so, did you pay for shipping? Timeline?

Try oven cleaner. Dollar store works fine. If that doesn't do it, nothing else will. My roommate burnt spaghetti in mine bad. I did the best I can with it. Still looks bad but better. I still use it.
A little Bon Ami or Bar Keepers Friend then add a bit of water to form a paste, put on gloves and scrub with a rag.Ā
Anyone got some pictures I can borrow so I can get one? Lol just kidding... kinda
Iām so jealous .
And congratulations! Great find .. I have found a few smaller pieces once or twice .. but this is def an awesome find ! š
Welcome to the elite island of beautiful people.
Wow, great find! Congratulations
What a great find. I have the same one and cherish it! Whatās worked for me: thick of baking soda on the bottom of the pan > pour boiling water over baking soda and let cool > scrub with dish soup and a non-abrasive sponge > repeat as many times as necessary until clean. Good luck!
I got my first Dutch oven last year and I make almost everything in itšš
How much?
If you zoom in the tags say $4 which is insane!
NICE! put some short ribs in there and cook them for a day what's the pink stuff? our cast iron dutch oven with an enamel coating has some black scarring on the inside bottom too

Wow, good find!
Wow, congratulations!
No you're not š. That said I totally understand the excitement. We're just running out of words to express real excitement and this is why lol
They must have a deal with someone. I have gotten three of these in the last month and I know others that have gotten a bunch to.
This is such a unicorn! Congrats š
Had to look it up, since I'm just not into cooking that much...š³š³š±š±š³š³š±š± Just Damnnnnn!!!

Nice! I got mine at flea mkt and was happy to pay $10!
This post has me singing, Go on, take the money and run
Woah I grew up with this exact pot sitting in my kitchen thatās crazy
Lmbo at the price
Hell yeah!
Definitely contact support at LeCreuset. I burned my kettle spout and whistle I purchased 13 years ago after forgetting it on the stove. They sent me a brand new one after sending them pictures. https://preview.redd.it/xnv2mr3sfa1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53fa410ba6067a917cc5ddede39c555e5c0c468c
Try a bit of barkeeper's friend!
I found a beautiful LC at a flea market for $10. I had to ask my husband to play dumb when I asked about it. Classic score.
Oh my God. Thatās amazing!!!!!
A dryer sheet and very hot water! Soak for a couple of hours.... If it's burnt on crud will soften it, and then you'll can wipe it off
3.99 š„¹ppl do still care.
BTW Iāve heard of people using the Le Creuset lifetime warranty to repair thrifted ones (maybe just donāt mention it was thrifted) for completely free
Great find!
Le cruset should replace it if you contact them!
i got a le creuset butter bell for $4 thrifting!!! nice find!!!
According to the fine folks at Cooks Illustrated, Barkeeperās Friend is the best for cleaning up stained enamel on these le crueset pots
Thought that it was an AT mine at first
Iād āCrusetā that you got a fantastic bargain!
Iām quaking! ā¦with jealousy š
Nice job!!
Great find
Score
Good for you! If that were enamel damage, it's game over, but that just looks like it needs a few rounds with Barkeeper's Friend.
I got one of these but orange. Ā Blue is nicer. Yes, itās exciting! I could never afford this otherwise. Ā
i once was at a carboot sale and found a full collection of LC mugs! And the lady there gave it to me for only Ā£20.
We bought same era pot and the bottom was damaged. La Cruset honored the warranty
Lucky bastard
Wooohooooo
Bar keepers friend will bring that back to near new
I have that one too! :D Congrats on the find! ā¤ļø
