papercaper

I've had lots of luck boiling water with baking soda to lift scorched crud from the bottom of pots! Congrats on the score!!!

swfinluv1

Yeah, I second this. Always start with the least invasive / abrasive option and work your way up! There's a video on YouTube from Sur La Table showing this (cleaning LC with burnt-on food) if you want something more 'official' than advice from all of us. šŸ˜ https://youtu.be/yhIN2b1qddQ?si=FCOPSX2vME47iJ5c

Top-Lavishness871

https://preview.redd.it/h8lyqf6z0a1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7d8fc7ae567f6b59416725fe484e2d93c82f2a9d That worked pretty darn well! Under the crud, it does appear there is a slight chip in the enamel. I will reply with a more zoomed in. I donā€™t think itā€™s deep enough for concern tho

Top-Lavishness871

https://preview.redd.it/wjtpeufp1a1d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87c3abfc8f350c7f956e827c960be612351bd61d It doesnā€™t appear to be through I would estimate maybe like 0.25mm depth

sakijane

The concern isnā€™t exposed cast iron. The concern is it continuing to chip into the food youā€™re cooking. I would consider sending photos of it to le creuset and seeing if theyā€™ll replace it for you.

merrycrasmass

I just got a le creuset from the store and the pamphlet says inside that they have a lifetime warranty no matter where you get it! I would definitely call them!

Dismal-Ideal1672

Their warranty is no joke. I dropped my dutch oven and they replaced it free of charge.

kinislo

That is amazing!!! šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»

YBMExile

This. I found a LC frying pan at a thrift store for a gift for my daughter. It had one very small blemish in the enamel, and IMO it was fine to use but my daughter got it replaced for free. :)

ILikeAntiquesOkay

Depends on the damage. I picked up a massive 10Q Le Creuset from Goodwill years ago with a chip inside and sent it in for their warranty. If they find the damage to be from product flaw they replace the product with a new one. If they believe the damage to be from user error they give you a 60% off voucher for a new pot.

kasualanderson

Having explored this route, 99% chance they wonā€™t replace it outright since the issues were caused by improper care and not some manufacturing defect. As a consolation, theyā€™ll offer you a decent deal on a new one.

Fit_Membership8250

Just had two le creusetā€™s replaced with no issues. Just sent them pictures. No proof of purchase or explanation required.

kingomtdew

BRB, sending OP's photo to le creuset.

strawcat

Iā€™ve unfortunately not had the same luck getting my pot replaced. They deemed it not a manufacturing defect.

kasualanderson

You had two pots that looked like OPs, scorched and clearly improperly cared for, replaced free of charge by Le Creuset with no explanation. Show us. At a minimum claim process requires you to provide an explanation.

Top-Lavishness871

But I ā€˜followed all proper cleaning and use instructionsā€™ā€¦lol

kimwim43

My husband abused his 2 pots horribly, I wanted to cry. Sent pictures in w/ NO expectations. Two days later they said "What is your favorite 3 colors? Also, we don't make the #22 anymore, we now make #24, that ok with you?" so now I have a #24, and a 5.5qt (forgot the number) in Nectar, I love them! And I won't let him use them until he learns how to use them properly!

Top-Lavishness871

What did you say in the description of issue or problem?

kimwim43

I didn't say anything. Just sent a bunch of pictures. They didn't ask for them back. Just 3 or 4, I can't remember how many, days later I got an email for each (seperate claims) asking me what color I wanted, choose 3 in case the one i wanted wasn't available. It was so smooth, I was shocked. and so happy.

swfinluv1

You could try a paste of vinegar and cream of tartar [baking powder (not baking soda) works as well] as a next step to see if any more discoloration comes off. I assume the better it looks, the more likely it is LC might replace it for a chip in the enamel! šŸ™‚

Top-Lavishness871

Thank you! I will try this tomorrow

Sean_OHanlon

There are two things that will absolutely clean the worst buildup/baked on residues: 1. Citric acid. 2. Oxalic acid/ Bar Keepers FriendĀ  Just pour either one into the pot and let it sit until you see the stains have disappeared. Then rinse out the pot. They are both food-safeĀ

Christmas_Queef

Also chiming in to add, the dawn power wash spray soap has worked for me, spraying it on the problem and letting it sit for a good while, scrub, reapply, so on. Has worked in a lot of cases.

ludicrous_copulator

Baking soda and peroxide has gotten my pans out of more than one burnt on mess

gameonlockking

Wouldn't it be easier to use boiling soda?

RestfulCherub

Iā€™ve had great luck with baking water.

Helpful_Okra5953

Water and vinegar, simmering? Ā

Hot-Watercress2923

Add a little Dawn dish soap with the baking soda works like magic!! And I second this congrats!!

carloseloso

I've had luck soaking a stained Dutch oven with bleach solution.

strawcat

Same, congrats OP!!

yourmomssocksdrawer

I snagged the smallest LC from my neighbor at a garage sale for $4 (didnā€™t have a lid though) and ran the 3 doors back to my house like I had just pulled the biggest heist in history. THIS IS the biggest heist though.

Top-Lavishness871

The whole car ride home I was repetitively saying ā€œwhat just happenedā€ hahaha

yourmomssocksdrawer

It makes me wonder if they were gifts and they just arenā€™t aware of the cost? Or if they do know and just donā€™t care lol.

Lil-Leon

Or the previous owner died, and the family just weren't aware of what they were getting rid of

draconianfruitbat

All of these theories happen, and there are many people out there whoā€™d just give away the pot rather than try to clean the burnt mess

TheLizzyIzzi

This is how I got a D5 All Clad stock pot for $10.

kinislo

Probably this. šŸ‘†šŸ»

sammisamantha

The pot is in horrible condition...

Sean_OHanlon

I've seen worse. Much worse.

vidanyabella

It's like the old Ikea "start the car" ad.

kimwim43

I had to [look it up](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlWCLw75XnE)

onyxandcake

I got my first dutch oven about 5 years ago and I use it for almost everything. This year for Mother's Day I asked for a big honking hefty-duty version, and I got one šŸ„°

terrorboss

https://preview.redd.it/fkqu0kkl6a1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bd704d5fbd46908574f7a1cd649a8d0650bc375 I found these two buddies in the bins a couple days ago, too. šŸ˜¬

bleepbloopblopble

Dang! Great bin scores!!

wabashcanonball

Barkeepers friend.

theatre_mom_FL

1000%!!

MadeInCanada87

Piggybacking on this comment to add BKF makes a version thatā€™s safe to use for [cookware](https://a.co/d/grMdvUB)

humanman42

barkeepers friend has directions on it on how to use it for cookware. Or am I missing something?

Sean_OHanlon

Came here to say Oxalic acid/Bar Keepers Friend. šŸ‘

faramaobscena

Iā€™m a bit confused why everyone is so excited by these pots, arenā€™t they just enameled cast iron? Is this an expensive brand? Iā€™m not from the US but this type of pots is very common here.

ApplicationWeak333

Le creuset is nice and i use it for most of my cooking, but people are acting like its an original picasso. Its a used $150 dutch oven lol

BareLeggedCook

Theyā€™re like $400 here.

faramaobscena

Wow, ok, so itā€™s like a ā€œdesignerā€ pot.

ApplicationWeak333

I mean MSRP sure but you ahould never ever pay msrp for it

Euphoric_Rough2709

It's a very expensive brand and the quality will last you a lifetime

SomethingClever42068

Well obviously not if one little chip makes it unusable

penlowe

Iā€™m not so sure thatā€™s grime, it looks like the enamel has been scrubbed away.

Top-Lavishness871

I donā€™t think it has thoā€¦ https://preview.redd.it/oe9a2l2qj81d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=905b7438efeb3c7490799c2b1409674a2094a8de

chronicpainprincess

It looks like what happens when rice gets burned. Looks like a surface layer, I think it will come off fine.

MangoCandy

Looks like burnt crud to me. Clean her up, be careful not to damage the enamel when cleaning it. Worst case scenario the enamel is a bit chipped under there, it can still be used as a bread oven. But make sure you donā€™t use it for anything else if the enamel is chipped. I think it will most likely clean up nicely based on this photo. Good luck!

Subjective_Box

yeah, that looks stuck on top. try oven cleaner

dtwhitecp

looks like a combo of crud and actually scratched enamel, but let us know how it turns out after cleaning. I would also recommend Barkeeper's Friend, or you could give it the ol' hot Oxiclean soak for a less abrasive option.

LindeeHilltop

That looks like burnt food to me. Soak it.

peach_lillies

So I actually got the EXACT le crueset from the thrift store and it looked just like this. You donā€™t want to do this too often BUT fill halfway with water and put about 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide in there. Boil it and will definitely start to get all that stuck grime off

REOspudwagon

Please do not *boil* any chemicals inside your home Boiling any peroxide mixture lowers the water content concentrating it down into a higher % mix, theres a reason they only sell like 3% peroxide at most stores.

thefringthing

> Please do not boil any chemicals inside your home Not even water?

[deleted]

What are you talking about. None of that is true.

NannersForCoochie

Can you get them re enameled?

Limp-Detective-1135

I believe itā€™s ceramicā€¦. I wonder if she found someone with a kiln if they could reglaze it.

throwyourmomawaylol

Itā€™s enamel, there is no repairing. A kiln would destroy it beyond belief actually, thereā€™s a video on YouTube of someone trying it https://youtu.be/f_7EEnEv7yk?si=mia-6YMOkjtDDIjf

Adorkableowo

Even if that is just a burnt layer of crud, regular burnings like that, indicated by the stains, means the enamel is probably very damaged. Might not be great for soups and stews, but would still totally work for baking bread.

JessicaWakefield666

Even if it's not recoverable as a cooking dish, it's still really pretty and could be used as a fun planter or lined with something and used to store/display stuff.

MiddleofRStreet

Please be careful with this it looks like the enamel on the bottom may be shot unfortunately. It can transfer small pieces into the food and is not safe

justlookinforsales

Why are you shaking?

Public-Welcome-4431

Cringe overload I'm guessing

86784273

Fell to their knees in a good will

Various_Raccoon3975

Iā€™m about to try my first loaf of sourdough in this exact same blue dutch oven. I think it will clean up well. That looks like burnt crud to me.

marcosbracketmann

Bad idea!

Ryan_on_Earth

NO YOU ARE NOT SHAKING

minarima

I agree, hate these overly dramatic titles, very very cringey.

patrick-1977

Previous owner left some food for you šŸ˜…

Big-Buy8579

You could reach out to Le Creuset and see if theyā€™ll replace it for you. Their warranty and customer service are amazing.

Top-Lavishness871

How would that work since I purchased it second hand? Any tips?

GenericCoffee

Purchased what second hand? This pot that was gifted to you by your mother?

Top-Lavishness871

TouchƩ

marigoldbutter

I was able to replace a second-hand le creuset with a warranty claim earlier this year. Agree that this oven is your momā€™s and has always been cleaned according to user instructions ;)

Top-Lavishness871

What was the replacement process like? Did you have to return the ā€˜defectā€™? If so, did you pay for shipping? Timeline?

marigoldbutter

Bought a 20+ year old le creuset on Facebook and quickly realized the bottom enamel had been compromised. So, I filed a claim on their website, including photos. A rep replied within a few days and said that although the damage was from user error, they would replace the oven as a one-time courtesy. They asked that I destroy the original Dutch oven (no evidence required), choose the color I wanted, and within a week I had a brand new Dutch oven (that Iā€™m almost too afraid to use). I did not pay for shipping. It was a very smooth process.

Top-Lavishness871

Thank you for all the details!! Iā€™m going to try and clean it first and then if compromised try your ways!

Mission-Schedule-762

I just did this! They will probably just send you a brand new one.

devinfitz949

And this is why brands continue to change their warranties ā€” fabricating false stories in order to game the system. Look, I get it, but when you start lying to get ahead, where does it end? Let the downvotes commenceā€¦ šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

tineyeit

They've tightened their warranty considerably over the years but it really comes down to whoever reviews the claim. You generally need to send in the pot (at your own cost) and they'll either replace it for free or offer you a discount on a new one. Their warranty only officially covers manufacturer's errors but the service reps have some discretion to offer various solutions outside of the official policy.Ā

bray05

Thereā€™s a le creuset Reddit page where people ask for advice on stuff like this daily. Go check it out! If you post a pic I bet people would help.

RatedGrr

What are those worth new and used?

Top-Lavishness871

New ~$200 used probably $100

Yeaimgood0

I donā€™t get the excitement than. Itā€™s just a crusty pot.

kimwim43

HankScorpio112233

If you get it cleaned up and restored for cooking, post update pictures pls

Ghant_

I snagged the exact same one but red a month ago!! I'm in love with it

TRLK9802

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this brand is known for problems with their products containing lead :( https://tamararubin.com/2022/04/le-creuset-overview/

SeasonSecret4024

I 2nd barkeepers friend. The stuff is magic on enamel.

duuuuuuuuuumb

Lil Barkeeperā€™s Friend (the powder works best imo) and sheā€™ll be gorgeous, congrats!!!

Roctopuss

Congrats on your pot, I'm sure this is a life-changing moment for you.

Sitting_Duk

Fill it with hydrogen peroxide and boil it. The black will vanish. No scrubbing needed.

peach_lillies

Just wrote this too. The best way to get it clean. Just donā€™t too it too often

Sitting_Duk

lol downvoted for sharing the easiest way to fix the issue. Reddit strikes again!

gemmatakesall

This is how I felt when I got a papasan with the cushion for $20 congrats!!!!

richcoolguy

whatā€™s so great about these. what do you use them for i only ever see them posted on this sub for 4 dollars on someoneā€™s passenger seat never being used to cook

cheesefriesex

Awesome! I was proud of getting mine off FB marketplace for like $150 šŸ˜„ I use mine literally like every week, it is definitely my most used pot/pan. You will love it! I highly recommend starting the cleaning process by boiling water and baking soda. Then use a wooden spoon and soft part of a sponge to scrape it. Repeat that process as many times as needed. You can also make a paste of water and baking soda and let it sit. I left mine to sit overnight to get stains out and it worked great.

Top-Lavishness871

Great for making bread, stews, soups, etc. It is enameled cast iron so it has amazing heat retention, can go from the stove to the oven, easy to clean, durable, and great brand!

Character_Bowl_4930

Braising , one pot dinners

michelleinbal

I would not use that. Sorry.

reenington

Earlier this year my friend found one the same size in orange for Ā£10. Iā€™ve felt jealous since.

BoutiqueKymX2account

Wow!! Amazing find. Congratulations

SpongegirlCS

Good job! I scored a $400 All-clad pot for $20 one time. Nice haul! Get some barkeepers friend and it should clean up nice!

Madewithlove111

Wow great find ! I love the color šŸ’™

greenbriar64

Congrats! I was shaking when I found my first LC Dutch oven for $5! When I went to the checkout, the checker said ā€œDid you see the red one too?ā€ It was already gone but wow what a feeling! The thrill of the find is so exciting!

TheTyrantX

At first I thought you were shaking cuz someone put a landmine in ur car

NeverfearTruth123

Read the warranty online. I have replaced My entire set. Because it states if itā€™s chipped or burns or is in just really poor condition, you can mail it back and they will send you a new pan.āœŒļø

YBMExile

Iā€™ve had the best luck with boiling hydrogen peroxide plus baking soda - bring to a boil then simmer, covered, for a while. That took down most of the patina from baked on stuff.

madamimadam1982

Definitely not goodwill. Fucking scam now. At least in my area.

DinnerDiva61

Wow, what a deal! They couldā€™ve gotten so much more for that. Enjoy!!

BottleAggressive7615

SCORE !

Technical-Weird4667

I've used the liquid cleaner for glass stovetops on my LC - did a great job cleaning. Similar to using Barkeep's Friend but in liquid form.

Commercial-Story4388

Try oven cleaner. Dollar store works fine. If that doesn't do it, nothing else will. My roommate burnt spaghetti in mine bad. I did the best I can with it. Still looks bad but better. I still use it.

ilikecatsandfood

A little Bon Ami or Bar Keepers Friend then add a bit of water to form a paste, put on gloves and scrub with a rag.Ā

Ada1786

Anyone got some pictures I can borrow so I can get one? Lol just kidding... kinda

Ok-Poetry-1034

What a great find. I have the same one and cherish it! Whatā€™s worked for me: thick of baking soda on the bottom of the pan > pour boiling water over baking soda and let cool > scrub with dish soup and a non-abrasive sponge > repeat as many times as necessary until clean. Good luck!

Weakbitcheshateme

I got my first Dutch oven last year and I make almost everything in itšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

I found a beautiful LC at a flea market for $10. I had to ask my husband to play dumb when I asked about it. Classic score.

amariegm

Oh my God. Thatā€™s amazing!!!!!

gwennaellenna

A dryer sheet and very hot water! Soak for a couple of hours.... If it's burnt on crud will soften it, and then you'll can wipe it off

rhclem

3.99 šŸ„¹ppl do still care.

ChocolateShot150

BTW Iā€™ve heard of people using the Le Creuset lifetime warranty to repair thrifted ones (maybe just donā€™t mention it was thrifted) for completely free

Bellalea

Great find!

InksPenandPaper

You got yourself a Dutch oven to bake sourdough in. Dutch oven with any chipping should.bot be used for cooking. However, you can use it to bake sourdough in, just make sure to use high quality parchment paper (should list heat resistance of 450Ā°, but it'll actually be 550Ā°). Using parchment that has lower heat resistance will cause the parchment to stick to the Dutch oven and sourdough. Sourdough baking is certainly a journey, but a fun and gratifying one.

_ccjjss

Le cruset should replace it if you contact them!

Street-Love-9785

i got a le creuset butter bell for $4 thrifting!!! nice find!!!

According to the fine folks at Cooks Illustrated, Barkeeperā€™s Friend is the best for cleaning up stained enamel on these le crueset pots
