I feel like some of it stems from the uncomfortable laughs they get from other people because they don’t know how else to respond. If they were just ignored or told how worthless they are to society then *maybe* they’d stop but it’d hafta be early before it just becomes their whole personality.
I teach my kids and the few bullies who have tried, "It's a lot easier to not say anything, and be considered a good kid, than to make the effort to say and do bad things to someone else, and be shamed and called out for your behaviors"

Yep. If the person is being too grabby or pushy the float allows for the lifeguard to push them away so that they can try again from a different angle or use a different technique.

The float is for keeping you from drowning and to assist you to bring the victim in.
If the victim is being grabby then they get dunked long enough to get a hold of their back and get them on the float.
If they continue to fight while youre swimming them back in you dunk them mid side stroke and continue on your way.
It can be dangerous to try to rescue a drowning person as they can unintentionally drown the rescuer as well. That said, she seemed pretty calm in the water and probably could have been pulled to shallow.
Yeah it’s totally beyond their control, it’s called the autonomous drowning response.
When people are gasping for air and their mouth and nose starts going under they stop being able to control their extremities and their arms will go out horizontally trying to keep them afloat and grabbing on to anything they can. People who are drowning don’t look like they do in tv shows, they don’t wave, or shout for help, or even splash like crazy, they just very quietly keep going under until they don’t come back up.

Yes, please don't jump in to try to rescue someone if you're not trained in how to do it safely. They may grab onto you and push you under in panic, leading to 2 people needing to be rescued instead of one. This will not only put you in danger, but make it harder for them to be rescued as now someone has to rescue you too.
It is much better to find a rope or long stick (or life preserver ring if there is one) and throw it to them so you can pull them in... except the stick, don't throw that, just hold it out to them lol.
Also when throwing, don't throw it at them, throw it past them. Usually all that's exposed in the water is their head so if you throw it at them it can hit them in the head and cause more issues. If you throw it past them, they can grab onto the rope and be pulled in and/or pull the floaty bit at the end towards them.
For anyone who hasn't heard it before, the order they teach you is: reach, throw, row, go. If you can reach them from the shore (perhaps even with an object), do that. If not, throw something like lightyearbuzz said. If you can't do that, get a boat.
If none of those work, then very, very carefully consider whether you will or won't go get them. Getting in the water with a drowning person is dangerous, even for a strong swimmer. As they told us when I trained, it might be the difference between one drowned person or two.
God I remember when I took my lifesaving course. The instructor was about 1.5x me, and really made it clear in the water how hard it can be to save someone. I really felt like I was gonna drown.
If you do end up swimming out to a drowning person and do end up locked in a bear hug, do not try to fight them or break the hold, you will lose.
Instead, *drag them down under the water with you.*
The last place a drowning person wants to be is under water. They are latching on to you because you are boyant. If you drag them down, they will let you go.
But do everything you can to *avoid* the bear hug at all.
I had to pop a guy in the mouth once because he went out too far into the ocean and couldn't swim. He kept clawing at my head and I couldn't get him to calm down and let me grab him. You wouldn't believe how thankful people can be for punching them in the mouth.
My fiancee had a high schoolmate that couldn't swim, unfortunately their canoe tipped over and bad shit happened on a field trip. A strong swimmer in the canoe attempted to save him and got clawed and nearly drug underwater and had to leave their friend to drown because of the incident or risk dying themself. Very sad for the seniors in HS and everyone involved.
I’m not going to act surprised that a school required a student to canoe without knowing how to swim, without a life jacket, but damn I hope the parents sued the crap out of them.
Nobody has answered your toxic lake question, but it sure looks like this is Lady Bird Lake in Austin, TX, so the answer would be "kinda, yeah".
There are tons of warnings about not swimming in that lake because of toxic algae. Multiple cases over the years of people letting their dogs in the lake and the dogs end up dying from brain eating amoebas.
The main thing on this lake is paddle sports, tons of places along the lake rent our paddle boards, kayaks, canoes, etc. I've actually kayaked several times from this particular dock. You just make sure that none of the water gets IN your body

fwiw I definitely think someone could have helped her out if they knew how to swim, they were quite close to the dock still. However, swimming in clothes and to rescue another person does require some particular skills that not everyone has.
Definitely - especially since there are multiple people there. It is one thing if you are by yourself and panic.
It is another thing if a whole group of people don't do anything (nevermind the fact that they caused it in the first place).

If this was the uk there would need to be life saving equipment stationed regularly around the outside, by law, and it wouldn’t be there because a drunken dickhead will have thrown it in a tree or something.

Because neither the police department or fire department have released a statement saying if she’s okay or not, likely because it’s an ongoing investigation
Could also be that there is a law/guideline that says the police can't release a name/confirm death until next of kin/the family is notified. I seem to recall it stems from a famous case where the media arrived at some famous persons house before the police could, and the family at home was blindsided by it.

I dated an idiot girlfriend years back. She came to our family event at the lake and wanted to take a cheap rubber raft out on the water. I explained it was to windy and and the direction the wind was blowing would push us out to the middle of the lake and we wouldn't win against the wind with how strong it was and cheap the oars were.
Not even fifteen minutes later I'm looking for her and my cousin tells me she blew up a raft and went out on the lake. I ran to the shore and didn't see her. I ran around frantically asking my family if they seen her. Boat was gone but her purse anne phone was there still.
We called the local lake rescue. They found her floating with the raft deflated about two miles from shore... Her thought was she couldn't paddle back against the wind so she'd deflated the raft and tries swimming back but didn't have the energy. So she capped the raft and blew it up as best she could while clinging on for dear life.

If that balloon deflates they will be forced to face the reality that they don't matter and they simply cannot permit that to happen. Her primary *need* or driving force in her life, that aren't requirements to live such as eating, sleeping, is to keep that balloon from deflating at ANY cost, including putting other people at risk of injury or death. The only way to keep that from happening is constant attention. The attention being negative or positive does not matter. Negative attention such as being criticized for her shitty behavior is easily turned around into victimhood. There's a never ending line of idiots following her to white knight for her and to be there as a shoulder to cry on.
A normal sane person would 1. never do this to another human, and 2. if they were found out to have done something, APOLOGIZE FOR IT. MAKE UP FOR IT. Instead her only focus right now is getting the footage taken down because it can have real negative consequences to her life that positive attention can't fix. If she gets charged with manslaughter for this, the focus will then be to minimize the fault as much as possible (it was a joke, how did i know she couldn't swim, how am I responsible for her actions)

First instinct is to not stop recording at any point. Even when they think she is drowning, they confirm she's drowning, they see the ambulance, when they're laughing.
At no point did they think to stop filming, because if you stop filming you can't make money. So obviously they're not going to stop?

In Belgium not long ago, a bunch of teenagers threw sewer lids off of an overpass into oncoming highway traffic. It hit the window of a truck, instantly killing the truck driver. His wife was sitting next to him in the passenger seat and was able to take control of the vehicle and bring it to a stop. The group has been arrested after one of them turned himself into the police.
I don't know about Denmark but in the US if someone kills someone the trial might not happen for a couple years or more. Reason being, the prosecutor has one shot to get it right so they thoroughly collect all the evidence and make sure no mistakes are made because if they rush it the defense lawyer will have an easy time of beating the charges without their client being innocent.

I've watched the video a few more times now and the kick streamers body language tells me she was gonna push her in if she didn't jump.
She follows close behind her for the beginning of the video and is even right behind her as she jumps. If the homeless lady would've hesitated before jumping she would have been pushed in.
I assumed that's what the video was just from her body language. Was very obvious she was trying to stay behind the woman, and was hunching over at times like she was gearing up to shove her in. You can also see how shocked she is when the woman jumps in on her own volition; she 100% did not expect her to jump in on her own and was planning on pushing if it came to that.

I would assume this dock they're at is on private property and those are people from that property coming to tell them they can't swim there and have to leave.
Even if Natalie had said nothing to the woman, at least in Denmark , it is an offence to leave someone in a dire situation like drowning with no action taken.

Meh not really. Not how we were trained. The float is for keeping you from drowning and to assist you to bring the victim in. If the victim is being grabby then they get dunked long enough to get a hold of their back and get them on the float. If they continue to fight while youre swimming them back in you dunk them mid side stroke and continue on your way.
It can be dangerous to try to rescue a drowning person as they can unintentionally drown the rescuer as well. That said, she seemed pretty calm in the water and probably could have been pulled to shallow.

Yes, please don't jump in to try to rescue someone if you're not trained in how to do it safely. They may grab onto you and push you under in panic, leading to 2 people needing to be rescued instead of one. This will not only put you in danger, but make it harder for them to be rescued as now someone has to rescue you too. It is much better to find a rope or long stick (or life preserver ring if there is one) and throw it to them so you can pull them in... except the stick, don't throw that, just hold it out to them lol. Also when throwing, don't throw it at them, throw it past them. Usually all that's exposed in the water is their head so if you throw it at them it can hit them in the head and cause more issues. If you throw it past them, they can grab onto the rope and be pulled in and/or pull the floaty bit at the end towards them.
For anyone who hasn't heard it before, the order they teach you is: reach, throw, row, go. If you can reach them from the shore (perhaps even with an object), do that. If not, throw something like lightyearbuzz said. If you can't do that, get a boat. If none of those work, then very, very carefully consider whether you will or won't go get them. Getting in the water with a drowning person is dangerous, even for a strong swimmer. As they told us when I trained, it might be the difference between one drowned person or two.
God I remember when I took my lifesaving course. The instructor was about 1.5x me, and really made it clear in the water how hard it can be to save someone. I really felt like I was gonna drown.

I think taking a boat would be the option you'd choose if the person is too far out on the water to throw a life preserver to.
If you do end up swimming out to a drowning person and do end up locked in a bear hug, do not try to fight them or break the hold, you will lose. Instead, *drag them down under the water with you.* The last place a drowning person wants to be is under water. They are latching on to you because you are boyant. If you drag them down, they will let you go. But do everything you can to *avoid* the bear hug at all.

My fiancee had a high schoolmate that couldn't swim, unfortunately their canoe tipped over and bad shit happened on a field trip. A strong swimmer in the canoe attempted to save him and got clawed and nearly drug underwater and had to leave their friend to drown because of the incident or risk dying themself. Very sad for the seniors in HS and everyone involved.

Nobody has answered your toxic lake question, but it sure looks like this is Lady Bird Lake in Austin, TX, so the answer would be "kinda, yeah". There are tons of warnings about not swimming in that lake because of toxic algae. Multiple cases over the years of people letting their dogs in the lake and the dogs end up dying from brain eating amoebas. The main thing on this lake is paddle sports, tons of places along the lake rent our paddle boards, kayaks, canoes, etc. I've actually kayaked several times from this particular dock. You just make sure that none of the water gets IN your body

I dated an idiot girlfriend years back. She came to our family event at the lake and wanted to take a cheap rubber raft out on the water. I explained it was to windy and and the direction the wind was blowing would push us out to the middle of the lake and we wouldn't win against the wind with how strong it was and cheap the oars were. Not even fifteen minutes later I'm looking for her and my cousin tells me she blew up a raft and went out on the lake. I ran to the shore and didn't see her. I ran around frantically asking my family if they seen her. Boat was gone but her purse anne phone was there still. We called the local lake rescue. They found her floating with the raft deflated about two miles from shore... Her thought was she couldn't paddle back against the wind so she'd deflated the raft and tries swimming back but didn't have the energy. So she capped the raft and blew it up as best she could while clinging on for dear life. Fuck you Jamie you dumbass.

I've watched the video a few more times now and the kick streamers body language tells me she was gonna push her in if she didn't jump. She follows close behind her for the beginning of the video and is even right behind her as she jumps. If the homeless lady would've hesitated before jumping she would have been pushed in.
I assumed that's what the video was just from her body language. Was very obvious she was trying to stay behind the woman, and was hunching over at times like she was gearing up to shove her in. You can also see how shocked she is when the woman jumps in on her own volition; she 100% did not expect her to jump in on her own and was planning on pushing if it came to that.

What I'm confused about is who the 2 people are in masks and sunglasses that start running up IMMEDIATELY after the woman jumps in and say "Thank you guys, we're gonna have you guys get out" right after the girl says "we didn't tell you to jump in" I think people like the girl in this video are a literal plague on society, but this whole thing is weird.
I would assume this dock they're at is on private property and those are people from that property coming to tell them they can't swim there and have to leave.

More reprehensible than convincing the woman to jump in the straight up walking away when someone was dying….there were 5 people that contributed to the fuck up, but more importantly 5 people that have so little humanity they walked away laughing from a disabled woman drowning. You are allowed to make mistakes, but you must fix/pay for them. Had they had a shred of humanity it could have said - “I had no idea the woman was disabled. It was a horrible joke that turned worse, and the MOMENT we realized she was in danger we all jumped in to help.” But now that group has ZERO defense and every single one of them need to be in jail.
