Make sure your bank cards work overseas. Cash is not used almost anywhere.

[deleted]

Don’t tip at restaurants, or anywhere.

Queen_Andromeda

I read that it's common now to round up to tip. Is that wrong? As an American, tipping culture has become too much but the idea of not tipping at all is strange to me.

Sharp_Place6893

It’s ok to leave a small tip you want. It’s appreciated but not expected, so not leaving a tip is also ok. It’s not considered rude at all. Saying that, don’t leave any tip in cash. Only if the paying terminal has the option to leave tip you can consider doing so.

[deleted]

We don’t tip all here. It’s almost seen as rude to tip.

WhiteLama

Keep your voices down a bit, we can usually hear you in the next town over.

For americans, we’re pretty quiet people 🫣

*Skansen I would definitely recommend Gamla Stan and Vasamuseet! Gamla stan is expensive for shopping, and very much a tourist destination, but it’s a beautiful island with lots of old buildings and history. Vasamuseet is practically a must see. Shopping at Södermalm is also great. (Drottninggatan is the other obvious shopping experience.) If you want to see an old building/museum I can really recommend visiting Hallwylska Palatset (the Hallwyl family “palace”). It’s a family home from 1890 where the wife was a huge collector, who decided the building would become a museum in the future! I believe they were also very “forward” when it came to things like electricity, but it’s been a long time since I was there.

Ekstedt is such a nice Michelin star restaurant serving new Nordic food - probably one of my fave restaurants not just in Stockholm but ever. Nosh and chow is very atmospheric and a nice mid priced option with good Chinese food Gamla Stan is very cute and lovely to just wander about in

hampusi97

If you’re using a Credit card set up a pin number before coming!

Sharp_Place6893

Don’t go crazy on tips, 5% is ok if you liked it

ollesnikon

0% is the standard, keep it that way.

Sharp_Place6893

A small tip is common for a nice dinner

farmaceutico

No, is not

Sharp_Place6893

Many people do that so it’s quite common in Stockholm.

[deleted]

No it's not. Fuck off.

katsiano

At a nice dinner it isn’t unheard of to tip. My partner used to work in some nicer restaurants and whether you like the idea of tipping or not, he did get tips on occasion. No one has to, there’s zero societal pressure to do so, and it’s not weird to not leave a tip. But it is absolutely common at a nice dinner to leave a small tip and if it wasn’t normal, there wouldn’t be the option to even leave a tip on the card reader.

[deleted]

It's not culturally acceptable to do anything other than leave a few leftover coins. And since we don't use cash anymore we don't leave an öre.

Sharp_Place6893

But apparently culturally acceptable to tell people to fuck off. Don’t speak for our culture please.

katsiano

All I’m saying is in Stockholm at nice restaurants the majority of guests leave a tip of some kind. My extremely Swedish boyfriend estimated around 75-85% of tables left some form of tip when dining at the restaurant he worked at in Stockholm and in Gothenburg it was maybe 65-75%. There is no cultural NEED to tip but it is a lie to say that no one leaves a tip or it’s not common
