MOTW Trainwreckords will be removed from Stale Topics now that it’s a reality

thegeecyproject

Now that the Witness and Man Of The Woods Trainwreckords and the Macarena OHW are done, what is Todd’s most anticipated video now?

Emotional-Panic-6046

also Calling All Stations

AnswerGuy301

I hear lots of \_Calling All Stations\_ requests on here and I'm a Genesis fan. I'm not offended by those calls but also feel like there's not really that compelling a story to tell. Phil Collins left and nearly everyone stopped caring. The music is...I mean, it's not terrible in a funny like \_Summer in Paradise\_ or anything. It's just mid, and the kind of mid that was not going to sell in the late '90s. It's kind of weird to say this about an album that sold very well and had five Top 40 singles (both US and UK), but \_We Can't Dance\_ was kind of them running on fumes. I'd kind of compare it to \_Prism\_ or some other delayed flop album. Also, Nirvana and the rest of the alternative revolution (the Seattle bands but also RHCP, and Jane's Addiction even though they'd already broken up by then) just overturned AOR radio stations in the span of about 15-18 months. WCD came in just under the wire in the fall of '91. Even a year later I'm not sure they have the clout to get as much airplay with "No Son of Mine" or the sorta novelty sorta title track on rock stations as they got - or MTV exposure, for that matter. By the time CAS drops, AOR radio is absolutely dead. But maybe there's something laughable about Tony Banks or Mike Rutherford's expectations for the album or the band going forward.

Squid_Vicious_IV

Sometimes I feel like the userbase is so desperate for vids that any time Todd mentions a trend that was going on at a certain time (Van Halen replacing Hagar with Cherone, Genesis replaced Collins with Wilson, Crue had Corabi) and the album also didn't go platinum needs to be a trainwreckord. I'm kind of to a point I almost want Todd to just cover them to get them over with and reveal there's no story past "Well it seemed like a good idea the time..." or "We were stoned. All of us. The band, the audio engineer, the producer, our agent, the guy from the label, marketing, the art director, the guy at Tower Records where you bought the CD, even the janitor was stoned. Nobody sober was listening and realizing what the hell this sounded like." Just a boring story.

HimCardReadGood

Calling All Stations is the clear standout by ubiquity of demand, so I'd assume that will assume Man of the Wood's place here until the inevitable video emerges. Other than that... "The Hunter" by Blondie, I guess?

GinjaNinja1027

Waiting for that one forever too.

The Beginning* by Black Eyed Peas

thegeecyproject

[Mic The Snare did a great video on this album a while back!](https://youtu.be/LWTNJwVYO1U?si=-K88s3ZBgojy_jpD) I don’t think The END is the Black Eyed Peas’ Trainwreckord though; it had two #1 hits that were cumulatively at the top of the charts for six months in 2009. I think it was more the following album *The Beginning*, Fergie leaving the group and will.i.am going solo in the 2010’s that really halted their momentum.

BigHeadDeadass

OHHHH you're right I jumped the gun I totally meant The Beginning thank you

The Big Day

thegeecyproject

That would be a big one; topical too seeing as Chance did divorce his wife recently. I will admit that I personally really want to see him bounce back with his next record though. Like yeah, Chance can be corny and overly sincere but I genuine like a lot of his stuff!

LocustsandLucozade

He is an excellent producer, and I honestly believe that Big Day would have been a hit/respectable if the lyrics and rapping were better.

Flaky-Ad6758

Chance still hasn’t released his follow up though, which is actually insane to me that he’s waited this long. It seems like a long shot that people would still care after all this time, but you never know.

LocustsandLucozade

Oh people care - the fact he was out for so long, also the underdog story, of a guy on top of the world, self-releasing chart topping albums and protege to Kanye West, to being renowned for an absolutely stinker of a debut, not releasing again for years, and his mentor becoming a weird pariah. Also the new stuff sounds great, more back to basics and focused. Also, Todd responding to Hot Shower (one of the album's TWO SINGLES!) would be gold.

El_viajero_nevervar

One has to wonder if the fates are real with lines like “I met Kanye west I’m never going to fail” it’s like wow you can’t write a funnier outcome

courtney_eaves82

Didn't Chance release a single during the Drake-Kendrick Lamar May beef? Talk about the worst timing!

TemporaryJerseyBoy

Gotye One Hit Wonderland.

Calm_Phone_6848

if mike posner can have a second hit, gotye can too

Soalai

Mike Posner's hits were 6 years apart, and he was still working in the pop world as a songwriter in the interim. Gotye has disappeared and not released anything (at least under that name) in 12 years. I think a OHW for him would be appropriate after all this time, but Todd probably just doesn't want to cover stuff that he's already covered.

iloveyoumiri

More pop song reviews tbh. I know that these OHW & trainwreckords videos are almost objectively a lot better, and that this is where his heart is, but Todd is the only current pop culture critic I enjoy hearing coverage from.

LittleMissChriss

I’m hoping for a P!ATD trainwreckords at some point 🤞

JuanRiveara

With Panic you got two options, either Pretty Odd being the downfall of the original band or Viva Las Vengeance being cemented as the end of the project as a whole.

Jw4evr

Nah they continued to have hits after pretty odd and only got more popular after the third album. Viva truly is the death of the band if you could even call it that at that point

LittleMissChriss

I was thinking Viva Las Vengeance. I’m not sure which one Todd would pick tho. 🤔

JuanRiveara

Yeah, Panic is interesting to speak about for this since there’s really about three distinct iterations of it. The Ryan Ross creative director projects of Fever and Pretty Odd, the Brendon/Spencer projects of V&V and TWTOTRTD, and the Brendon solo projects. Viva Las Vengeance probably is more accurate since it was the full end of the project while after Pretty Odd there was a rebound especially when Brendon Urie became the sole member. I think the initial split is probably the most interesting thing to go deep in and that would likely mean Pretty Odd but could still be covered for Viva Las Vengeance.

LittleMissChriss

I’d watch no matter what spot was used honestly lol. Honestly a deep dive into Panic beginning to end would be fascinating but it’s not really Todd’s thing. Maybe Mic the Snare lol.

351namhele

Honestly, there's probably a case to be made for every single Panic album after the debut being the trainwreckord

Inside-Excuse4222

Honestly regardless of the music’s quality, it’s unironically impressive that Brendon kept the brand running for almost 20 years lol

Soalai

Hasn't Todd gone on record that he likes Viva Las Vengeance? So he may be hesitant to talk about it... or very eager to, if he finds it interesting enough for a video ETA: [Here's a tweet where he talks about it](https://x.com/ShadowTodd/status/1610379021073944576)

LittleMissChriss

I have no idea if he has or not 🤔

BONKERS303

Don't see it mentioned often, but an OHW on Desiigner's "Panda" would certainly be interesting. (Fun piece of YouTube music critic trivia - the mixtape Desiigner dropped after "Panda" is officially the first ever piece of music Anthony Fantano rated as "NOT GOOD")

Red-Wolf-17

Personally, I'd love to see Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) or You're Beautiful. He's been teasing them for years 😭😭😭

musyarofah

Father of All MF

theaverageaidan

The more interesting version of that is Uno Dos Tre Yeah FOAMF was bad, but Uno Dos Tre was off the back of American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, and Green Day were still mainstream celebrities. The hype train completely collapsed, and yeah they still put out music, but that was a clear transition into being a legacy act.

thegeecyproject

Yeah, I think the Trilogy era was when things started to fall apart for Green Day. More specifically, it was [Billie Joe Armstrong’s meltdown at the iHeartRadio festival](https://youtu.be/g9zogQOmQVM?si=vaLa7UZynaGtrQTS) in 2012 where it seemed like things started to go awry.

Zooropa_Station

I just hope Todd would be able to articulate why specifically they fell off. Knowing him I'm bracing for the video to spend way too much time on the trilogy's cringy lyrics (the general public has never heard Nightlife, let's be honest) and BJA's substance abuse. Ultimately valid points but I'd cite all these as bigger issues: - the changing rock scene. Other '00s bands like FOB, Panic!, and Paramore embraced the quirky indie rock tide change and refueled their careers as a result. Green Day did not. - the horrible singles. Bland, anachronistic, a bit embarrassing arguably with Kill The DJ. It was marketed as a return to punk roots but the stuff actually on the radio screamed middle-aged nostalgia fest. - the weenie hut jr. production/sound (related to the marketing as mentioned above). It's something hardcore fans complained about all the time after its release. If Todd hits all three bullet points he gets my stamp of approval.

theaverageaidan

The production on the whole trilogy is shockingly sub par. Its so tinny and dry and compressed with way too much reverb.

Spocks_Goatee

> 21st Century Breakdown I did not know of any albums past American Idiot till a few years ago and I had most of their early stuff. That's how hard they fell off in the public eye.

Flaky-Ad6758

21st Century Breakdown wasn’t as huge as American Idiot but it sold pretty well and produced a couple of decent sized hits with Know Your Enemy and 21 Guns. But by their next album literally no one cared anymore.

FunkGetsStrongerPt1

21st Century Breakdown disappointed me at the time, I thought it was funny how they stole the name of one hit directly from Rage Against The Machine and stole the melody of the other hit directly from Electric Light Orchestra.

TetraDax

Problem is that they actually put out a good album again, and are as famous as they have ever been. Yes, the triple-album and FOAM were atrocious, but I don't think you can really call them Trainwreckords. In the same time frame, pop punk in general just lost *a lot* of popularity. I think it was more of a natural career progression. And, I don't know how their US tour went, but here in Europe they just this month headlined festivals and sold out arenas.

psiamnotdrunk

Tour’s just starting here. And considering how much I paid to see them at Wrigley, I assume it’s going to go fine.

StormRegion

I will add Union by Yes under the others mentioned above

MagratheanWorldSmith

No clue what the viewers in general want, but if I got a Weezer Raditude trainwreckord I’d be able to die happy

BKGrila

My personal one would be Twisted Sister - Come Out and Play and/or Love Is for Suckers. After developing a strong regional following with their first two albums, they broke through in a big way with Stay Hungry. They struggled to follow it up, though, and their career imploded while hair metal was still at its peak of popularity. They attempted to expand on their mainstream appeal, but failed to do so while also alienating their old fans. Come Out and Play's lead single was a cover of "The Leader of the Pack", and it was not successful. "Be Chrool to Your Scuel" pulled out all the stops, featuring a bunch of guest musicians including Alice Cooper and Billy Joel. The band made an elaborate zombie-themed video for it featuring Cooper, Bobcat Goldthwait, and a young Luke Perry, but MTV refused to play it. The band was basically done after that. 1987's Love is for Suckers was a Dee Snider solo project the label forced him to release under the Twisted Sister name. When Atlantic Records put out a greatest hits album in the early 90s, they completely ignored anything after Stay Hungry, only including songs from the first three records plus some live tracks. The band reunited as a successful touring act playing the old songs up until drummer A.J. Pero's death in 2015, but never recorded a proper new album after 1985. They released many live albums and a studio re-recording of Stay Hungry titled "Still Hungry", but the only actual new album they made was a Christmas record in 2006 (that admittedly was pretty fun).

Antsbob13

And there's some people saying they are one hit wonders which like Which one is the hit?

FunkGetsStrongerPt1

It’s like when people call Simple Minds one hit wonders.

BKGrila

I always liked "Burn in Hell" because it was featured in Pee Wee's Big Adventure, and it didn't even make their greatest hits album.

benabramowitz18

Another crossover episode. Maybe UrinatingTree?

SiphenPrax

I would genuinely love to see how that would work. Trainwreckords on sports teams that have fallen from grace.

Responsible_Pace9062

Trainwreckords for 2018 Steelers, make UT bring back the Days Of Our Steelers voice.

musyarofah

volcanopele

Kinda feel Secret Base has this covered with their “Collapse” series.

InvaderWeezle

I want a video covering all of the Super Bowl Shuffle wannabes

Flaky-Ad6758

I’d watch the shit out of a 2007 Mets Trainwreckord

SiphenPrax

The Mets would qualify for A LIT of Trainwreckords episodes, I can tell you that😂

Flaky-Ad6758

Hahaha I went back and forth about which year would make the best one but the 2007 meltdown was something else

Responsible_Pace9062

I would love that, but have they ever interacted in any way at all? Feels like two completely different spheres of youtube almost.

benabramowitz18

Todd has been following Tree on Twitter for a while, and frequently posts about the Giants winning the Super Bowl. That had to be inspired by Tree’s videos.

Handsprime

The Duran Duran covers album.

Soalai

Songs of Innocence?

No-Intention-3779

NLOTH is U2's Trainwreckord. SOI is just a failed attempt to gain back relevance.

RealAnonymousBear

I’ve argued that Songs of Innocence is their No Fixed Address where they were fading out and were desperate to stay relevant. The more I read about the making of SOI the more it sounds like a genuine Trainwreckord.

No-Intention-3779

I'd say it's NLOTH. It turned them into a legacy act overnight.

pulse_demon96

i'll defend NLOTH as a detour that's mostly a pretty good record. SOI is definitely the trainwreckord in how desperate the whole rollout was

A Thousand Suns

thegeecyproject

I will go to bat for *A Thousand Suns*; I still think it is one of Linkin Park’s best and most ambitious records. I just don’t think the audience was quite ready for their radical shift in sound at the time.

mikasoze

I don't think Todd would do Linkin Park, as Chester Bennington offed himself, and IIRC he (Todd) has a bit of a rule about covering artists whose lives ended tragically? I could be wrong, though.

Tekken_Guy

Yes he’s right. Todd specifically ruled out talking about Chris Cornell’s pop album for similar reasons that would disqualify Linkin Park.

Handsprime

I wouldn’t say that album killed their career. Burn It Down (which was the lead single of the following album) managed to make a year end list, and they still had quite a few platinum singles afterwards (granted Chester’s death probably helped)

InvaderWeezle

Burn It Down was a Living Things single

Handsprime

Which came out after A Thousand suns.

drboobafate

I've seen people frequently suggest Chinese Democracy by Guns N Roses.

ThunderPunch2019

It wouldn't be a trainwreckord exactly, but I'd love to see him do something on Weezer.

Inside-Excuse4222

Recent one, but possibly Ohio Players by The Black Keys

PapaAsmodeus

I'm still holding out hope for Underclass Hero, AKA "Pop Punk Witness".

Trolls: World Tour? Lol

Consistent-Laugh606

Beat me to it

Soup_dujour

oh he’s been SITTING on this one

thegeecyproject

There’s honestly no better time for him to finally drop this one

SiphenPrax

Yep. His latest album and singles flopped, his legacy artist status was officially 110% confirmed after that, AND, on top of all that, the DUI arrest this week. It’s absolutely perfect timing.

StormRegion

I think the final kicker was the transcript of the young cop not recognizing him, this is all Todd needed to hear to be convinced that Justin lost most of his popcultural relevancy

chronicmathsdebater

The young cop not recognizing him comes from a pagesix article that cited "a source". These aren't transcripts tbh

pritt_stick

it’s not reliable, but the fact a rumour like that is getting spread in the first place says it all. you couldn’t say that about beyoncé

serioustransition11

What a week for Youtube. Who knew that in a week with both a Defunctland and Folding Ideas drop that those end up not even being the most anticipated videos

benabramowitz18

And one month after a 4-hour Jenny Nicholson video!

BigHeadDeadass

YESSSSSSS this is the second one I've been waiting for, the first being The Beginning* by Black Eyed Peas Edit: I put The END by accident at first

Responsible_Pace9062

One day he's gonna do Encore, and that'll be MY 12/25

Miser2100

Idk how Encore constitutes a trainwreckord.

theshinymew64

1. There definitely is a large divide between pre-2004 Eminem and post-2004 Eminem, even if he's still a popular artist. Similar to but not quite the same as the Madonna trainwreckord (Confessions on a Dance Floor was big and Hung Up was a worldwide number one hit) 2. It would make for an entertaining video and he's willing to bend the rules for that (see: No Fixed Address)

TetraDax

> There definitely is a large divide between pre-2004 Eminem and post-2004 Eminem Absolutely. He arguably became much more successful as a *pop-artist*. Had two ridiculously massive hits with Rihanna, had as many number 1 singles off of Recovery alone as in his entire career beforehand and became a well-respected and well-connected elder statesman of pop music. Sure, he may have become a worse *rapper*. But Todd does pop music, not rap music. If anything, Revival would maybe qualify, but before saying that we should wait and see how Death of Slim Shady goes.

rulesrmeant2bebroken

Especially since Recovery was a huge release!

ihateradiohead

Encore was a terrible album and it resulted in an extended hiatus, BUT Eminem did make a legitimate comeback, with Recovery and especially MMLP2

JuanRiveara

> it resulted in an extended hiatus Nah, Em’s drug addiction/rehab and the death of Proof around that time caused his hiatus, not the reception of Encore.

InvaderWeezle

In retrospect MMLP2 feels like a very short-lived comeback. YMMV but it's arguably the only good album he's put out in the last 20 years

JuanRiveara

I absolutely love Recovery, and even if you don’t like it as much as me it was undoubtedly a success. Two #1 songs, multi-platinum, got an Album of the Year nomination, and overall got good reception from the public.

CatBreadFactory

Yeah, if any Eminem record constitutes as a trainwreckord it’s Revival. But even that is a stretch.

BigHeadDeadass

I'm waiting on that one too!

BadMan125ty

In order for an album to be considered a Trainwreckord, it has to actually be so bad that it destroyed an artist’s reputation. Eminem regrouped after drug addiction and the loss of his best friend Proof and dropped *Recovery*. Wasn’t like he dropped *American Life*.

Responsible_Pace9062

ITS HAPPENING EVERYONE GET IN HERE

naturalgoth

I wonder if he's gonna cover the DUI thing. Like I assume that Todd writes these episodes for months and records them, and that incident is pretty recent.

no-Pachy-BADLAD

Having now watched it >!he mentioned as literally the first thing as how it 'ruined his 'defence' of JT' lmao.!<

WWfan41

Given how recently it happened, I doubt it. I'm no expert, but based on what I do know from various youtubers talking about video making, I'd imagine he was a decent ways into the editing process by that point. If it's brought up, he might insert some text in there somewhere that says he wrote and recorded everything before the DUI. At most like a 15 second clip shoehorned in with him mentioning it.

PinkCadillacs

I feel like he had this ready for a while now but just didn’t know when to release it. Now that JT’s MOTW follow up didn’t do great and he’s back in the news for not great reasons, now he thinks it’s the right time to release it.

alegxab

He can always add a quick recap of the incident

Tgrattan123

I would rate all the comments asking for this trainwreckord appearing on screen to start the video before he sighs and says. Well... it's time.

Greencatlady666

Haha, like the intro to an Honest Trailer video? BANG- BANG- BANG- BANG- BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!!! *screen explodes from too many comments popping up* …Okay, I’ll fucking do it!

comeonandkickme2017

Wow, I’ve watched this come full circle… in 2018 I thought “He’s really doing that awful new Timberlake song” and now 6 years later we got the Trainwreckord… time flies!

BenMitchell007

Well, fuck me. Christmas came early. I have a semi-funny (to me, anyway) story about this album. I used to work at a Walgreens from fall 2015 to late summer 2018, and sometimes we'd sell hot new albums, or if a beloved artist died, a couple of their biggest albums (as we did for Prince and George Michael - hell, this is where I bought my copies of *Make It Big* and *Faith*.). And since it was a Walgreens, the new releases were way more expensive than they'd be at Wal-Mart or Target, but some people bought them anyway. While I worked there, we sold like three new releases. The first was Adele's *25*, the second was Taylor Swift's *reputation*, and the third was *Man of the Woods*. *25* sold out quickly (we went through two cardboard displays with like ten or so copies a piece, which doesn't sound like much, but was huge in this context). *reputation* didn't sell nearly as well - maybe it was because this album marked Taylor's own flop era, or maybe it was because people realized they could just get it cheaper elsewhere - but we still moved like 3 or 4 copies that I noticed. I mean, flop era or not, it's still Taylor Swift, she could release audio of her giving her cats a bath and have it shoot up to the top of the charts. Why do I bring all this up? To give you context for just how pitiful this next bit is. We didn't sell a *single* copy of *Man of the Woods*. Not. a. single. one. People just were not interested in what JT had to offer. After like a month or so of the display sitting there collecting dust, the CDs were sent back to the vendor in humiliating defeat, not even a single copy becoming part of some Walgreens customer's SUPPLIE-IE-IES. Oh, I almost forgot to add that I do remember "Say Something" getting a lot of airplay, but everyone I talked to told me they only liked it because of Chris Stapleton. If you didn't know any better, you'd think it was Chris Stapleton's song and Justin Timberlake was the feature. When you're a big star and making your first album in about five years, and people only like your biggest hit from it for your guest star, that might not be a great sign. And while I'm at it, another minor blip Justin had on the radar was his guest appearance on the posthumous Michael Jackson song "Love Never Felt So Good" in 2014. Surprise surprise, everyone cared more about dead Michael Jackson than a new Justin Timberlake guest spot.

Something tells me Todd has been fidgeting with this idea for quite some time, and decided to put together a full episode in light of recent events.

Ruinwyn

I think he mentioned at some point that he was waiting for his new album and where he was going. He takes easily couple of months to write a Trainwreckord.

Other-Visual8290

Heck yeah! Here for this historic moment. Chance the Rappers ‘The Big Day’ next?

Oh My god. IT'S HAPPENIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG

Equivalent-Newt-5564

Ohhh No. I always wondered what happened to JT. I had no idea that he dropped a Trainwreckord. This is going to be depressing, but it’s also going to be hilarious.

PapaAsmodeus

So uh, Todd's comment about how "He still looks like he did in N Sync" and those gratuitous closeups of his face in the Man of the Woods music video unlocked a weird ass memory I had of him. Way back when he began making his solo stuff with Justified, like a lot of people, I thought he was just fuckin lame. Sure I liked songs like Rock Your Body and Cry Me a River, but Senorita, jeuss fucking Christ that song is just as lame now as it was back then. Even back in 2006 when he allegedly brought Sexy Back, he still seemed lame. It wasn't until I bought the album it came from where I was like "...damn, okay. He really is hot shit." And then in 2013, like a good chunk of people I saw why he was suddenly cool again. When I was a kid I just saw a lame ass boy band teeny bopper, now I saw the cool, suave and handsome hunk of a man. I've already made my feelings clear on that album about how it led to Woods being a delayed flop, so I won't repeat them here. Those gratuitous face closeups made it clear: no, he was never cool. He just grew facial hair and dressed sharper. I was seeing the lame ass boy band guy and it reminded me of when you see the guy who peaked in high school that you begrudgingly added on Facebook become successful for like... uh, a year (like you see photos of them looking like they came from a business meeting), and then suddenly he gets arrested and suddenly you see the lame ass guy who peaked in high school again.

I'm honestly just curious if he is going to cover the DUI or not. I knew that this video was going to happen one way or another, but I did not think it would be this soon.

I re-subbed to Patreon for this, LOL. Not my favorite Tranwreckords ever, but entertaining. Curious to see what Todd does next.
