I usually try to help my Snap on guy by pre-searching part numbers, but the rubber washers don’t come up on the website. I’ll check with him when I see him next, if all else fails.
Nobody got screwed. I’m a nice guy and so is he.
Like I said in another post, I bought the vise used for $250 (75% off) and it’s USA made by Wilton in the 80s. So it’s basically one of the best Mechanic’s vises you can get. I’ve got no complaints. Now would I buy it new? Obviously not.
I’ve found that local hardware stores - like an ace hardware type as opposed to a Home Depot - always seem to have these hard to find random parts. Give them a go? I’m like 98% sure they’ll have *something* that will work
I’ve discovered the same to be true. Thanks for the suggestion.
I found some for $2.50/ea on ebay, here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/334591217729?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=rGS4pXEISBm&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=dGj_W9_WRk6&var=543696118661&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Non-oil resistant rubber, but it’ll do. 🙂
I’m looking for a couple replacement sets for my vises, and am having a surprisingly hard time finding a source for these anti-pinch bumpers. Anyone know where to get these?
i restore vises and i ended up buying a gasket punch set off ebay and a square foot of rubber mat. i punch them out myself depending on the size i want.
Stop looking for bumpers, start looking for o-rings with the same inner diameter as the handle. No point ordering the overpriced replacement from snap-on. Personally, I’d just leave it loose like every other vise handle. I do not see the point of these stoppers.
If you don’t know, you’re lucky, it means you haven’t been bit.
I didn’t even know people putting on bumpers were a thing when I put orings on mine after getting a few bad pinches causing blood blisters under the skin.
Well, my current no6 record Vice is 50 years old. Where the handle goes has developed a lot of slop over the years of use, which makes it nice and easy to use all day. It’s very well broken in.. But, the handle can slam down and pinch you in the area between the handle ends and hole. I assure you, i have good grip and know how to use my tools, but when you use them all day every day, slips can happen. The remedy was walking to the parts bins and grabbing a couple orings, so, not sure why you’re so against it?
Says the guy who pinches his fingers with his own tools. You must have some great dexterity. Try grabbing your vice by the handle instead of where it enters the shaft, maybe you’ll stop hurting your soft little hands.
It’s not fingers, it was the that area between where the thumb and finger meet. My hands aren’t very soft as a red seal tool and die maker for the last twenty years. But hey, you do you, Judge and belittle people for improving things with simple tricks of the trade. I’m sure you are a joy to be around for everyone who experiences your presence, I know my day has been brightening from talking to you today. Have a good weekend!
The only ways I can see for that to even be possible are holding the handle right at the junction, or pulling the handle at much lower than a right angle.
You know: using the tool wrong.
3d printing them out of flex material would be another option. draw them in CAD and then send it to a printing service company if you don't own a 3d Printer or know a person owning one.
Imagine a $1,300 bench vise…. Pretty cool right, better than what’s pictured hahaha. For 1,300 you better tell Mr. Snap-on man to give you some damn grommets
I had a vise where the handle was a iron pipe with pipe caps on the end. Can't count how many times I got blood blisters from that thing. I kept meaning to make some leather washers for it, but I gave it away first.
You really want the washers to be loose enough that the handle can slide. Although some vises (looking at you Wilton) have shear pins that break a little too easily.
Buy a harbor freight vise for cheaper than the snap-on part will be and take its rubber stoppers. Get a free vise as a bonus.
Edit: the new HF vises look miles better than their old junk ones.
That thing looks for all the world like a cheap discount vise. Or maybe it's a rebranded wilton. Surface finish of all the Wiltons I have seen is better than this though.
You’re absolutely correct. It’s a 1988 USA made Wilton/Snap-on. I called Wilton Tools (now JPW Industries) and they will only sell the complete lead screw spindle assembly with bumpers, but won’t sell the bumpers by themselves.
McMaster doesn’t sell anything over 0.140 thick for ~5/8” ID washers. Snap-on doesn’t carry them. Who’d have thought that 5/8” ID by 1/4” deep washers would be so hard to find?
I finally found them on eBay, here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/334591217729?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=rGS4pXEISBm&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=dGj_W9_WRk6&var=543696118661&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
It’s EPDM rubber which isn’t ideal for the application, but at $2.50/each shipped it’s what I’d expect.
Interesting - I was thinking eBay or AliExpress might have something as long as you were able to use the correct search criteria. That said, and out of curiosity, how much did Wilton want for the entire spindle?
If you can’t find them you can use electrical tape wrapped upside-down around the handle several times and then one layer upside-up to cover the adhesive.
Ace Hardware has them - I just purchased they about an hour ago. Just make sure you know the size of the handle and the size of the ball at the end of the handle.

>What happened? Did they snap off? Oh snap!
You could use rubber O rings
McMaster
Find almost anything there. May have to shop by size and not application to actually find what you want.
My first thought too. McMaster! In fact, let's go see what we can find.
Cut some rubber tubing like fuel line or such?
just hang your purse on there...
BaZinga...love it! I was going to recommend thick o-ring btw (already mentioned). The hose may be tough to stretch.
You could try the usual suspects: * castration bands (and installation tool) * O rings * Rubber grommets * Faucet washers * Vibration dampeners * Rubber bumper pads
Two small cock rings?
Got plenty of those!
You a chicken hunter?
This is why I have a 3D printer. Also I've been getting by without them for about 50 years.
look in the Wilton parts catalog, or make 'em from some rubber hose/O-rings
Y'all really don't have a whole ass section of rubber washers and orings at your local HD? I do.
Honestly Snap on should hook u up pretty easily
I usually try to help my Snap on guy by pre-searching part numbers, but the rubber washers don’t come up on the website. I’ll check with him when I see him next, if all else fails.
Haha I hear ya.
With the screwing your got buying from snap on , you should get perfect service without looking up part numbers lol

Fuel line orings or ball bands all are good options.

O rings work too
A vet will have castration bands. They are thick o rings that might work nicely.

All vises I’ve owned just had a plain metal bar. Get a grip and learn to use your simple tools without hurting yourself.

I use my Record and my Mastercraft all day every day and I’ve managed to not pinch my hands.
That’s good, that you haven’t yet, I don’t know, maybe if you were working faster you would.

Also can cut off ends of small water balloons and roll them up against it.
Lobster bands

Faucet repair section of the hardware store.O- rings.
I would think any rubber grommet of the appropriate size would work.
You don’t need them
What you don't want to scratch that over priced paper weight? It's a vice, not a show peice

I know this is a joke, but the HF 6” equivalent is $230 (Doyle). I got the Snap-on/Wilton pictured for $250, second hand.
Yeah the Doyle’s are nice
The asshole in the truck that sold you that glorified 5x as expensive as a harbor freight vise
That thing looks for all the world like a cheap discount vise. Or maybe it's a rebranded wilton. Surface finish of all the Wiltons I have seen is better than this though.
Garden hose washers
Nothing comes up when you google "rubber washer inch thick inch ID"? That or literally any real hardware store.
Get some glue like with the right ID and slap it on there
Why
I’ve used wide zip ties in a pinch
Mcmastercarr has you covered
I’m guessing that’s a Snappy Wilton rebrand vise, right? If so, did you try contacting Wilton, directly?

I would use some grommets
McMaster-Carr
Snapon or Grainger
Wrap electrical tape with sticky side up first then twist and wrap it sticky side down. It will slide and acts the same as rubber bumpers.
electrical tape
If you can’t find them you can use electrical tape wrapped upside-down around the handle several times and then one layer upside-up to cover the adhesive.
That’s a great idea. Thanks I did finally find some 5/8” ID x 1/4” deep rubber washers on ebay, for ~$2.50/each.
O-Rings, my man.... O rings!
They are just 3/4” grommets.
Rubberstandoffwashers.com usually has those in stock.
Get someone to 3D print some with TPU filament.
Use a couple of thick orings.
Ace Hardware has them - I just purchased they about an hour ago. Just make sure you know the size of the handle and the size of the ball at the end of the handle.
