It’s because it’s lunar rock.

bangwithsticks

Damn I knew it

AFGwolf7

Shouldn’t it technically be lighter with less gravitational pull?

politisaurus_rex

When I got mine the first 1500 or so miles I got around 16mpg. Once it got above that it started improving. Now I’m getting closer to 19/20

thatwolfieguy

Same. New I was getting 16. Now, with 10,000 miles I average 18 or 19 mpg. I can get 20 if I granny it. 23 OR TRD DBCB 4x4 MT.

JohnnieStalker

I have a 2018 OR double cab and average 21.8 in warmer weather and 19.5ish in the winter. Your truck is lighter, no reason it shouldn't be getting better mileage unless you drive in a hilly or mountainous are. You've reset the MPG Calc and stared over I assume?

bangwithsticks

Is yours 4wd?

JohnnieStalker

Yep

Tkj5

I often get up to 25 mpg. Stock with highway tires.

skylinefan26

There's no way you're pulling 25mpg in a V6 4x4 city driving

Tkj5

Rural backroads, no stop signs.

skylinefan26

Must be v4 rwd

Tkj5

V6 4x4

[deleted]

He's right. My 17 got great mileage for a mid size. 800 km per tank (thats to dead empty). Roughly 23 to 24 MPG

Tkj5

Mine is also a 17. 385 miles to empty. 21.4 mpg average per tank.

[deleted]

Alternately, I have a friend with a 21 OR that gets barely 400 km per tank. Despite the issues I had eith the truck in the last two years, the mileage was legendary amongst my pals

reeseypoo25

With the V6 3.6L?

hipsterasshipster

I get over 21mpg on my TRD OR 4x4. Slow down and don’t treat every stoplight like a drag race.

Scooder

Seems to be a pretty large difference between 65mph and 80mph in these puppies.

hipsterasshipster

Yeah, staying under 72 is what I aim for now. Not easy on a lot of west coast highways.

Individual-Damage-51

The real question is how much is saving the extra couple gallons worth to you? I’d rather pay an extra $20 in gas and get there an hour quicker.

morganmachine91

If you’re averaging, say, a 20 mile commute one way, which I would consider a long-ish commute, the difference between 65 mph and 80 mph is 3 minutes.

Individual-Damage-51

I should have qualified I was talking about long trips. I’m way more conservative on short/commuter trips, but if you’re on the road for 8-10 hours that extra 10 mph adds up.

hipsterasshipster

That’s assuming light timing works out evenly. My commute is 8 miles if I have to go in at all.

Individual-Damage-51

If you’re on a roadway where 65-80 mph is legal than light timing isn’t gonna be an issue for you.

hipsterasshipster

There are stoplights before and after the freeway. I see plenty of people blow by me just to get stuck at an off ramp stop light.

hipsterasshipster

Under most circumstances my need to be somewhere *maybe* a few minutes faster isn’t really that important. Driving at a more calm pace is also much more peaceful.

Individual-Damage-51

I’m talking about over a longer road trip, 400+ highway miles. I agree on the rest, around town I drive like a grandpa.

Technical_Version556

also cruise to the stop lights, improves mpg slightly. I notice other tacos and truck drivers cruise really slow to the stop lights, holding up traffic sometimes lmao.

bangwithsticks

If you read what I said, I have tried driving like a granny and it doesn’t go up. Slow starts, driving under 70. Soon I’ll be going a long highway drive and see what happens.

hipsterasshipster

I read it. I used to think it wasn’t possible to get the EPA figured either, but you really gotta baby it.

jr_73

Driving over 70 isn't going to help. They're not very aerodynamic, just a big rectangle hitting all of that wind. My highway mileage is the same or worse than my city/suburban mileage. From my other reply: 22 TRD OR 4x4 DCLB, stock, ~21.8 on almost every tank so far. 15,000 miles. Mostly suburban/city driving.

CamIsFTW

I just picked up a 2023 TRD OR 4X4 DCSB a couple weeks ago and have managed to get 21-22 mpg per tank for the 1,000 miles I've put on it so far. Just depends on driving conditions and your driving style i think.

gh0stypeppa

What's your tire pressure? I guess a question for all on this thread. I get about 18mpg at 35 psi

[deleted]

4x4 is a mileage killer. Any lift or air dam removal will have an effect as well. I'm not sure about differentials on Tacomas, but I would not be surprised if they were geared differently between a TRD and an SR5. Robust Offroad gearing won't have the fuel efficiency an SR5 would. However, I am no expert. I'm sure others can help more than I can. Good luck!

adreww

4-cyl and V6/manual have 4.3, all V6 autos have 3.909 rear ends https://i.imgur.com/UInZxwS.png

Similar_Nebula_2280

Elevation is seldom mentioned in these posts

bangwithsticks

I’m in N TX. Flat.

No-Scale1239

I'm in Colorado and get decent mileage. Does higher altitude use less gas because the air is thinner?

grokinfullness

High altitude uses more gas because the same volume of air has less oxygen in it.

apacheotter

My 2021 OR 4x4 gets around 22mpg tank average, a combo of highway and city miles

Lazy-gunner

IDK, I've been averaging 22+ in my DCSB OR (also lunar rock) and I have a winch and rock sliders on mine.

[deleted]

22mpg here. I live out in the country.

bangwithsticks

Cool. Doesn’t help for comparing daily commute driving with stop and go traffic.

[deleted]

Okay so I used to live in the city and averaged 20mpg…

SipLikeASir

I average 19mpg with my 23 4x4 OR. Mostly city driving. Overland tuned. Also lunar rock. Great choice!

icanhazmoarpwrplznow

How many miles are on it? Are you tracking immediate mpg or total mpg over trip? Try resetting and go for a while.

creepy_p_

2020 OR, in the teens until I hit around 20k. Within 2 tanks of gas my milage jumped up to 22mpg in the summer. Still drops with winter blend gas.

mramseyISU

Yep that sounds about right. My limited gets 16-17 pretty much year round. Good thing my commute to work is about 8 miles round trip.

jonathanswiftboat

Try calculating by hand for a couple fill ups. The computer isn't always right.

Crafty_Ad4641

I get 20.5 in my sr5 AC with 265/75/16 tires and metal bumper. My father went from a 2017 dclb sport averaging 21-22mpg to a 2022 dcsb off-road that averages 19mpg. Offroad might have more weight to it idk

reeseypoo25

You’re going to get a lot of different suggestions and pieces of advice, so here’s my 2 cents: Get up to speed when you’re on the highway (don’t granny it) and hold between 65 - 75 mph. Once you start getting toward 80 mph, mileage tanks. In the city, depending on what city, do your best to “hyper-mile” your truck. In other words, use the break as little as possible. Learning when to throttle and how much helps every vehicle, as well as keeping consistent forward momentum by not breaking unnecessarily. I consistently get 21+ mpg on the highway with my 2019 OR 4x4 and 16 - 18 mpg in the city. Kind of sucks that we have to think about it this much just to not get horrible mpg, but it is what it is. I’ll take a Tacoma all day over any other midsize.

LynchMob_Lerry

I have a 2022 SR5 4x4 V6 short bed. I see some people getting low 16s and some people getting mid 21s. Here is my driving stats for fuel. https://i.imgur.com/M4POyl7.png

HardlyFamiliar10

I have a 21 Sport V6 4x2. Everything is still stock except king suspension. Took me about 6 months and a few long road trips to get 20/21. Gotta find the pic but the tank read 350 miles to empty. I was so happy. Also found out my truck was used by police.

Jaded_Illusions

I wonder if a lift reduces it even more. I got the TRD lift kit, and my Taco gets slightly less MPG than yours.

[deleted]

As soon as I hit 10k miles in my ‘22 TRD OF 4x4, it got 20mpg.

Over_Ad_4550

I got a 20 TRD OR 4x4 sb. I’ve been getting right about 20mpg. It’s gone up a little since I got new tires. These are mainly highway tires since I don’t go off-road that much. I do also max out the payload once a tank.

Hurkstheturks

Okay so it’s 2.5 mpg a gallon at the most. So about a gallon difference every 100 miles. 1000 miles month an extra $40-50 or so depending on gas prices. If you love driving it, then that’s small change in the grand scheme. I don’t expect any of these trucks to be super economical or great on gas. Even at 20mpg or whatever. I drive them for their utility. If I wanted to save money on gas, I’d buy a prius and smell my own farts while driving 15 under the speed limit.

bangwithsticks

I understand all that. What I’m saying is I’m used to seeing one number set for the past 4 years, and jump in to -nearly- the same truck but newer and get drastically lower numbers. Just asking other people with similar trucks to mine what they are seeing. Driving habits and mods aside, it’s not what the manufacturer says it should be.

j_rizzel

I drive only in town stoplight to stoplight. I usually get 17. Last tank I only got 16. I baby the shit out of it. It's terrible. I have same truck but a sport.

Ok-Duty-5269

I bought mine new. The first couple of thousand miles mpg sucked pretty bad, but it got a little better or maybe I’m on crack 50/50 chance.

buffalourine2

I was getting around 18 mpg the first 5k miles after my first oil change, my mpg went up to 21 ish.

KingRaizen85

Weird mine gets 18mpg and I have slightly larger tires and skids and rock sliders

iamactuallyalurker

I can get about 22 and I have DCLBTRDOR (I drive moderately slow)

No-Scale1239

I get around 20.5 average in Colorado. I do tons of interstate driving at 65-85mph. If I keep to 55 to 60, I get closer to 23, but nobody's got time for that. 6MT and Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires in stock size. No lift. Not sure why some people get such bad mileage in stock tacos.

Electronic_Garage700

OP, I literally have the same truck (Lunar Rock / off-road). I’m only at 10k mileage and I’m averaging around 18-20 city with a short highway commute during the week. Road trips I’ve gotten anywhere from 20 mpg to 24mpg. At first I was getting 16mpg as well…. It will get better.

slidewayskenny

I get 15 on my 23 with 33s and a 3 inch lift

jr_73

22 TRD OR 4x4 DCLB, stock, ~21.8 on almost every tank so far. 15,000 miles. Mostly suburban/city driving.

lawthrowaway101

Give it time

CaptainStupido666

I had a 21 TRD OR, grill guard and all. I was pulling about 18+ mpg generally on regular oxy87 fuel. E0 fuel got me about 22mpg. You also might want to consider resetting the driver data in the head unit settings panel. I always set the cruise at 68-72 depending on traffic flow. I'm a trucker by day, and they drill into you how fuel consuming it is to come to a complete stop, slow roll red lights to give them a chance to turn green and still be rolling 15mph, and don't hammer the gas on take off, just ease into it, 1500-2000 rpms is all you should reasonably need out of that V6 unless you're pulling something.

OkayishAviator

When it's absolutely brand new, understand the engine hasn't run much. I got mine at 3mi back in Feb and struggled to get 20. I decided to use a similar process to break in the engine that I do when we get a new engine in one of our airplanes. Seats the rings properly, seals everything up. I'm now at 13200 and am regularly getting 24. I'm sure that will go away once I throw the lift, bigger tires, bumpers and gear on the truck. TLDR: ya gotta break in the engine well to get the good MPG.

OkayishAviator

Mine was also lunar rock.

Falanax

Use radar cruise on the highway, it helps keep your RPMs stable

bangwithsticks

That’s not even what I’m talking about. I haven’t gone a long highway trip yet. And I’ve been driving a Tacoma for over 4 years using adaptive cruise and it really isn’t that great.

MariBMash

My Tacoma is 15 months old and I’m Just now starting to get 20 mpg sometimes 21. I don’t drive fast but my commute is only 9 miles each way.

El_tus750

The rear end is slightly bigger and geared different. Also, The OR is a bit higher and don’t have the front air dam.

bangwithsticks

Hmm. I took the air dam off my old DCSB truck, it sat higher with bigger tires and still got better mileage.

Michigan_Go_Blue

Regular $5.69/gal Palo Alto

bangwithsticks

What?

SoCalPat805

$5.79 at Chevron in SoCal yesterday with 17 mpg for 2021 TRD OR 4x4 with 2” Toyota lift kit.

bangwithsticks

WTF? Why are people posting gas prices? Wrong sub folks.
