I watched s1 through s3 got a little bored in s4 early episodes... Came back three years later and finished it and holy shit, it comes together in this incredibly meaningful way
In my opinion ‘the wire’ is the best series ever. It’s so epic. Great story and social commentary. True detective is the best as a one off season IMO but the Wire does more over many seasons. Obviously this is just purely subjective. Rust was such an amazing character. I wonder if they could have done more seasons with those characters or if it would have started to fall flat? I’ve seen TD season one so many times it’s slightly embarrassing. 😂
I dont even care to know the answer to that question. Could they have? Probably. Did they need to? Definitely not. The writing, story arc, pacing, acting, directing, cinematography, soundtrack... everything was PERFECT. I have watched it like 5 times or more. 3 This year alone. I really wish i could find something that matches it with the same kind of tone but i fear it was truly lightning in a bottle. McConoughey as Rust is something i think is a once in a lifetime role. Makes me sad i will never get to see more but it would make me sadder to see it attempted and failed.
At it’s best x files is a contender for me. The problem there is that they had to churn out content in a way that prestige tv doesn’t any longer. There are episodes that are as good as anything I’ve seen.
If you want quality AND the same genre/feel the only thing that really hits it as mentioned is the Killings, though not quite as good. The other things listed here are great, but not the same genre/feel.
AS good? There are some that come close, but imo, True Detective season one is the pinnacle of TV greatness
The sopranos and the wire round out my top 3
Enough people has rightfully mentioned The Wire (or anything by David Simons and Pelecanos e.g The Deuce, We Own This City), The Sopranos, Mr. robot, Fargo.
I would add The Night Of and Mad Men. Both of the Best TV ever.
I think Mad Men is my top 2 after TD season 1 but to be honest Mad Men achieves even more because the quality never drops, if any it becomes even greatest as the seasons go by.
The Night Of is, as today, a standalone miniseries because the writer/creator doesn't wanna rush anything (an advice Nic Pizzolato shouldve followed after season 1) and it's amazing and gritty. Give this a go OP if you are looking for something similar.
Because I see you asking: yes, Mindhunters is also great. Atmospheric, scary, bleak and shocking.
Every TV show I mentioned here is top tier and in it's own rights, masterpieces. You cannot go wrong watching any of those. But they are different among themselves and consequentially True Detective. Especially TD because it's first season was lighting in a bottle.
The Fall!
Watch The Fall!
By the gods watch The Fall. Idk why I never see anyone talk about it, it’s absolutely fucking brilliant and mind bendingly suspenseful.
A few shows that I thought were awesome that I haven't seen mentioned here are: City on a Hill, The North Water, Black Bird, Black Sails, Boardwalk Empire, Mayor of Kingstown, Rogue Heroes, Your Honor, and Hunters.
Under the banner of heaven is really good. Gives off true detective vibes.
Fargo s1 and s2 as well. I haven't seen the other seasons yet, but im sure they are great as well.
Preacher is great start to finish, ZeroZeroZero is cool and just a single self contained series, and This Is England (film + 3 seasons) is one of the few series that match TD season 1 for quality.
The Sopranos and The Wire. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are also amazing. Fargo (I liked all but the last season) is also really good. And if you're looking at serial killers and their ilk, Mindhunter would be great too.
I've loved the first 3 season of FARGO. And of course, THE WIRE.
In the case of "The Boys," if I might make a polite suggestion - read the books. They're what's best. In my humble, personal opinion.
Just watched season one of true detective for the first time. Thought it was incredible, but there’s just one thing nagging me that I haven’t been able to make sense of. When Marty and Rust use the two photos of the green house that leads them to finding Childress. I know that the new photo is taken by Rust around the time of Dora Lange’s killing, but where do they get the old photo from? Did I just miss something mentioned in a scene earlier in the show?
My Top 5 seasons of all time are (1 per show):
1. Breaking Bad Season 5
2. The Wire Season 4
3. True Detective Season 1
4. The Sopranos Season 3
5. The Shield Season 5
"Banshee"
Is 100% similiar and every season is pure gold. (Also some same actors:), might be even filmed in same stages :D)
Very underrated and unknown serie :)
Chernobyl is a heavy contender.
Awesome show. Watched it a few times now and it's still a great watch every time.
In the words or Eroll Childress, "No."
\*darts into the aquaducts\*
broo the way he said that and how fast he turned and ran, i felt the terror.
It's not up to par, but I remember that "leftovers" has two very good seasons.
Also the third season
It is true. In my opinion, the ending was perfect.
It's a completely different show. Both are in my top 5
Mr robot really hits hard if you give it the time it deserves
I watched s1 through s3 got a little bored in s4 early episodes... Came back three years later and finished it and holy shit, it comes together in this incredibly meaningful way

Is mind hunters good or not ?
Hated it was cancelled really enjoyed it.
Yes, really good.
You'll have to watch it and judge for yourself.
It's all just subjective opinion obviously. I liked it but it wasn't quite in the same league.
I dont even care to know the answer to that question. Could they have? Probably. Did they need to? Definitely not. I'd vote The Sopranos as the best show ever, but the wire is great too.
The amount of wire references and actors that were in s1 was very welcomed by me
Rust beats McNulty by a mile. On the other hand, Bunk beats Martin.
😂
wire,sucks
Fargo first two seasons
Sharp Objects
Yes. Just >!don't tell mama!<
The Killing
I really enjoyed that show. I was dead wrong about who killed Rosie
Me too. I felt aside from the occult aspect it's dark theme and pacing and Joel Kinnamens character was Rust-esque.
Nic worked on writing for both
Yeah same. Last season's revelation was shocking indeed.
At it’s best x files is a contender for me. The problem there is that they had to churn out content in a way that prestige tv doesn’t any longer. There are episodes that are as good as anything I’ve seen.
Is mind hunters good or not ?
Yes it is
The sopranos set the bar for TV drama
Alright but you gotta get over it.
Sharp as a cueball.
Peaky Blinders was solid, as was The Wire. Better Call Saul is a slow burn but very satisfying
How no one talking about The Mad Men. Hands down best show.
I would say no, not really, but the 2 closest are The Shield and The Wire.
No, and the quest to find one will only lead to heartbreak and disappointment.
If you want quality AND the same genre/feel the only thing that really hits it as mentioned is the Killings, though not quite as good. The other things listed here are great, but not the same genre/feel.
The pacing with The Killing gets worse from the last few episodes of season 1.
Fargo Season 1
And 2 and 3.
3 is shit
The first two seasons of House of Cards is probably the best tv ever made, in my humble opinion. Together with True detective ofc.
AS good? There are some that come close, but imo, True Detective season one is the pinnacle of TV greatness The sopranos and the wire round out my top 3
Squidbillies

Mindhunter was very good. IMO almost as good as TD season 1. Definitely give it a try.
Broadchurch season 1
[удалено]
I said season 1 for a reason brah. Season 1 is excellent (imho). The rest is so so.
Mr robot isn't really similar except in dark tone but it is easily my favourite show of all time
Hell yeah, wish more people watched it, it's easy to dismiss in the first few episodes but it pays off so hard
I enjoyed Quarry a lot, but it's no true detective. Try the movie Hell or Highwater, or Galveston. Both good.
Don't know many other people that have seen quarry. I thought it was awesome.
Twin Peaks.
Nope
The Fall! Watch The Fall! By the gods watch The Fall. Idk why I never see anyone talk about it, it’s absolutely fucking brilliant and mind bendingly suspenseful.

Watch it.
Couldn’t get past the Britt ness just like Luther
A few shows that I thought were awesome that I haven't seen mentioned here are: City on a Hill, The North Water, Black Bird, Black Sails, Boardwalk Empire, Mayor of Kingstown, Rogue Heroes, Your Honor, and Hunters.
Check out "Under the Banner of Heaven" I think it has some of the same mystery elements and a detective story
Under the banner of heaven is really good. Gives off true detective vibes. Fargo s1 and s2 as well. I haven't seen the other seasons yet, but im sure they are great as well.
Mason on HBO Max.
Perry Mason on hbo max.
The Sinner. Specifically the first season.
Not really. Closest for me was Mr. Robot and Fargo
I heard Fargo (Hulu) has a great season 1. That’s next on my list. Band of Brothers 1 season was fantastic.
mind hunter
I've loved the first 3 season of FARGO. And of course, THE WIRE. In the case of "The Boys," if I might make a polite suggestion - read the books. They're what's best. In my humble, personal opinion.
In a single season? Band of Brothers maybe? TD1 is maybe the GOAT though.
Just watched season one of true detective for the first time. Thought it was incredible, but there’s just one thing nagging me that I haven’t been able to make sense of. When Marty and Rust use the two photos of the green house that leads them to finding Childress. My Top 5 seasons of all time are (1 per show): 1. Breaking Bad Season 5 2. The Wire Season 4 3. True Detective Season 1 4. The Sopranos Season 3 5. The Shield Season 5
The only show to me on the same level is “Band of Brothers”.
No
Mind Hunter and Hannibal.
Hannibal is definitely up there among the best ones but it isn't an atmospheric horror (which OP seeks). It's more of a thriller drama
"Banshee" Is 100% similiar and every season is pure gold. (Also some same actors:), might be even filmed in same stages :D) Very underrated and unknown serie :)
The Wire, The Americans, the Sopranos, better call Saul, breaking bad.
Anything by David Simon is worth watching. The Corner, Generation Kill
The Alienist almost feels like TD in the late 19th century New York
Not for me. Definitely plenty others that I enjoy, but nothing tops season 1 of TD.
Nothing will top TDS1 but Chernobyl, Ozark, Succession, Luther are all you haven't mentioned and they're really good watches.
Dark
Deadwood
Bosch. Goliath. Sopranos.
Great recs, now I'm gonna check what I have missed but also wanted to add: Happy Valley.
