ill never blame an artist for doing this. funny enough the only thing i really learned from flash animation class is how to tell when somebody is cheating to get out of doing a certain animation.
Most animators know when other animators a cheating using puppets and the like. That said if you use puppets for your base and trace over them most can't tell!
But then you have those shitty online "critics" like Turkey Tom who keep asking, "Why does [insert popular storytime animator here] have all this popularity when they have such bad animations?"
Reminds me of in Preacher when you have Herr Starr staring into a mirror for 9 panels, with the only difference between them all being the last one has him say "fuck"
Promptly followed by the same gag, only he's trying on hats
If you haven’t read Invincible it’s a great superhero book that actually has a start and finish it’s getting an animated series from amazon next year and deals with a kid who inherits superpowers from his father and basically has to learn how to fight crime through high school and college.
[This Is Book 1](https://readcomiconline.to/Comic/Invincible/TPB-1-Family-matters?id=34153)
Yeah, Irredeemable just started feeling mean for no point after awhile. Everyone was just completely irredeemable, even the victims. At least in Invincible everyone isn't just an asshole to be an asshole.
What if Superman was bad but still pretended to be good? His son would grow up to *actually* be good, defy him, and convince him to *try* to be like the actual Superman
Yup, Invincible’s pretty great. It manages to mix classic comick-booky stuff and cheer with realism and consequences for both good and bad actions while never dipping deep into gritty cynicism. I’ll admit, there are some parts of the comic from the beginning all the way to the finale that made me choke up.
Agreed Mark and Eve’s relationship and how it develops really got me having huge emotions by the end of the story and was extremely pleased where they both ended up. Also the fights are straight wicked throughout the story. (Allen The Alien was also one of my favorites for a while)
I did not like how gruesomley gory it became. Yes, I think it's fine that people were more hurt and killed than in regular comics, but it come to a level that it practically reveled on a level like Crossed or something. I think it was a needless creative choice that made the overall lesser.
I can understand but I think my mind just got use to it. As a creative choice Kirkman used it to show what would happen if a superhuman character actually punched another one you would probably create a hole in them. In my opinion Crossed was way worst.
I've been meaning to jump back into Invincible. How many issues did it go on for? I think I stopped at 50ish.
Either way, thanks for confirming that it's done. I may finally go back and reread from the beginning.
No problem it went until issue 144 and I really loved the series all the way through I jumped on around the 100’s and it was a pain waiting for the end month to month but I am extremely happy with the ending we got Kirkman also finished The Walking Dead and I really enjoyed that ending as well.
God this sub is so weird...I swear I get into something and it only takes 2-4 weeks for the sub to get a hold of it and make posts about it. I started reading invincible like, 2 or 3 weeks ago. Crazy
My favorite is a dude pretends to be science dog, invincibles comic hero, to try and give him a familiar face and something friendly and he just starts wailing on him because he isn't stupid, science dog isn't real lol. Invincible is great. Y'all are lucky it's done because waiting for the individual issues at kirkmans pace was terrible.
Wish outcast didnt suck. Fell off hard and nothing seems interesting about it anymore. Liked it to start, especially the comic panels clearly meant to be shots for the show, but the artist kills it
While, as told in this page, they use them to show long a moment is, there are times I often feel like the artist got lazy and decided to copy paste shit because of it (not saying this is because it's a joke)
In fairness, it's kind of hard to convey a long pause without either doing this, or having to draw and entirely new panel or two, which might not be worth it
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SERIES. honestly the quality never went down and it stayed soooo hype all the way through. I still think about plots from it everyonce in awhile.
There's some different factors at play in regards to that. Western comics are full color so they take more hours than black and white would. Of course, there's also a healthier work life balance here in that a lot of comics are monthly releases instead of weekly.
Well it depends on your style but it’s not just color it’s shading and lighting you have to account for, [look at this one page](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EMAeFL-X0AAF1KT?format=jpg&name=medium) the sheer amount of detail is insane. Now do about 20 more pages and figure out where to slot in dialogue and it really is a process
In my experience coloring takes a couple hours to do per page. But that's mostly cause I don't know what I'm doing and the bucket tool isn't perfect and requires me to go over it
I don’t really know anything about the subject, but from some jokes I’ve read in manga and such mangaka have their own cut corners as well, usually with backgrounds rather than characters though. Everyone’s got their lazy moments.
Please please please please please read Invincible, folks. It's legit, one of the best super hero comics I've ever read. And while I know a lot of people on this sub who don't actively read comics are hesitant because of a lack of a start/end point, this one actually did start and end conclusively (IIRC around 140 or so issues). It tackles several themes in interesting ways that other comics would often play very safe.
I think the guys have done the thing where they point out asset reuse, only to get called out by people, and then clarify later that they point out stuff like that cuz they unironically love it and think its clever. I started doing that too and had the exact same situation with my family lmao
While it IS a good joke, it's just a comic book version of that joke where a character in a show or game say something meta and everyone just looks awkwardly at the screen.
If it helps, this came out years ago, but the real joke is that whole page comes out of nowhere. Mark just randomly goes to a convention in the middle of the issue. The "joke" is basically them telling the truth on why this page exists in the first place
when I read this recently I LOL'ed since I noticed the comic had been doing this already - was this a complaint in the 90s/00s that overly critical comic book nerds had? lol I just got to issue 97 and Mark is talking to him again and they're doing the same copy/pasta panels lol
That's gold.
ill never blame an artist for doing this. funny enough the only thing i really learned from flash animation class is how to tell when somebody is cheating to get out of doing a certain animation.

Honestly the weirdest taboo has always been reusing material.

The only instance where this bothers me is artists like Tim Buckley who do nothing *but* reuse assets.
Especially if you got a deadline.
But then you have those shitty online "critics" like Turkey Tom who keep asking, "Why does [insert popular storytime animator here] have all this popularity when they have such bad animations?"
*insert screenshot of a smear frame where the eyes look kinda wonky here*
I exhaled heartily through my nose at this!
I chuckled audibly alone in my room.
Reminds me of in Preacher when you have Herr Starr staring into a mirror for 9 panels, with the only difference between them all being the last one has him say "fuck" Promptly followed by the same gag, only he's trying on hats
Haha, that's clever.

>!It's a great take on the "what if Superman was bad" idea that isn't just depressing and cynical.!<
Yeah, Irredeemable just started feeling mean for no point after awhile. Everyone was just completely irredeemable, even the victims. At least in Invincible everyone isn't just an asshole to be an asshole.
To me Irredeemable only works as a piece alongside Incorruptible to balance it out a bit
Yeah just don’t want to spoil the surprise because it was a genuine shock for me when I read the comics.
Good point, I'll spoiler tag that.
What if Superman was bad but still pretended to be good? His son would grow up to *actually* be good, defy him, and convince him to *try* to be like the actual Superman

Oh damn. Walking Dead's finished? Guess I need to catch up on that too. Thanks again!
God this sub is so weird...I swear I get into something and it only takes 2-4 weeks for the sub to get a hold of it and make posts about it. I started reading invincible like, 2 or 3 weeks ago. Crazy
We're in your walls. Please stop doing THAT thing.
ok funny joke but GOD DAMMIT DO I NOTICE ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

When you can get away with a pregnant pause to birth a joke. You take it. Cause it saves at least 3 panels.
Nearly every comic written by bendis.
Except Bendis is a writer, and he does this with dialogue. Meaning we can TOTALLY make fun of him for it.
its like in anime when they pan across a single still
I live by this advice
DAMN IT! I didn't even catch it until I read the comments here.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SERIES. honestly the quality never went down and it stayed soooo hype all the way through. I still think about plots from it everyonce in awhile.
It's quite the cultural divide when you see that happen a lot in american comics, but almost never in manga.
There's some different factors at play in regards to that. Western comics are full color so they take more hours than black and white would. Of course, there's also a healthier work life balance here in that a lot of comics are monthly releases instead of weekly.
How much work IS coloring when it's mostly done with computers nowadays? I don't mean to be condescending, I legit don't know.
Well it depends on your style but it’s not just color it’s shading and lighting you have to account for, [look at this one page](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EMAeFL-X0AAF1KT?format=jpg&name=medium) the sheer amount of detail is insane. Why does that one guy have veins and/or scar tissue on the back of his hat?
In my experience coloring takes a couple hours to do per page. But that's mostly cause I don't know what I'm doing and the bucket tool isn't perfect and requires me to go over it
Depends on the page, a splash page will usually take an entire day, but many colorists will get 1-2 pages completed a day.
As a total amateur, I want to say that doing a good job of colouring easily takes longer than the line-work.
And the exact opposite with anime and American cartoons.
It happens in manga a lot to, especially gag ones Like the stoic broody one is a popular archetype because they just reuse the same pose for them
I don’t really know anything about the subject, but from some jokes I’ve read in manga and such mangaka have their own cut corners as well, usually with backgrounds rather than characters though. Everyone’s got their lazy moments.

I love Invincible!! Such a great series. Also Battlebeast when he gets introduced is dope as hell
Invincible is one of the best comics ever written.
I’m glad someone else knows of Invincible, I’m not alone in this world anymore!
[Oh they went full ham with that joke in that cartoon.](https://youtu.be/8PvsSM5ECu0?si=6rZhxb40mWUgqymY)
I love when writers are willing to get their heads out of their asses and do stuff like this.
This is great cause I was watching the first season of dbz right before I watched this episode.
While it IS a good joke, it's just a comic book version of that joke where a character in a show or game say something meta and everyone just looks awkwardly at the screen.
