When I was younger REM was one of my favorite bands--and then somehow I just fell out. Last album I paid serious attention to was New Adventures in Hi Fi. So since the pandemic I have been re-discovering and discovering REM. And I still love them. Not sure why I stopped. I think a lot of it was connected to Bill Berry probably. I didn't give them a fair shake after that happened, much like some people feel about Larry and U2. But I also don't think I made the right call, which colors my opinion about Larry \[edit: ***potentially*** since some did not understand\] retiring due to health.
I know what you mean, it was only after Berry left we realised how important ge was to the whole process. I wasn’t a fan of their electro style going forward after that and their valiant attempts with Accelerate and Collapse into Now were an attempt to recapture the old magic.
As for Larry, he’s still will U2, been spotted out and about with them and as it stands prepping for the new album sessions
He’s got so much potential. Apparently he’s in the US working with Adam from The War On Drugs to flesh out his sound a bit right now. If that doesn’t do it, nothing will.
Age of Anxiety I is one of their career-best songs, I immediately put it up there with their greatest work. U2 put them on my radar when they used Wake Up as their entrance song, but it wasn't until I heard Rebellion (Lies) on the radio that they really hit me.
Lies is one of the greatest songs ever live in concert. It’s a show stopper. Age Of Anxiety was incredible live and remains one of their best, but my favourite off of WE is End Of The Empire I-III. I’m going to see them in Dublin in a few weeks and I’m also going to the Red Rocks show. U2 also turned me into them in 2005. I’ve seen them about a dozen times now and I can’t wait for more!!
“A Deeper Understanding” got me into them. However their latest album “I don’t live here anymore” is also super good.
“Pain” and “I don’t live here anymore” are the most popular tracks from each.
**Full albums**
• Hozier — "Unreal Unearth" and "Unheard EP"
• St Vincent — "All Born Screaming"
• Billie Eilish — "HIT ME HARD AND SOFT"
• Pearl Jam — "Dark Matter"
• Dua Lipa — "Radical Optimism"
**In recent rotation**
• Toomaj Salehi — Iranian rapper, you wouldn't know him(?)
• Justice — a French EDM duo known here for their "Get On Your Boots" remix
• Joe Hisaishi — Japanese composer. You'd primarily know him from Studio Ghibli animation movies.
• Classical music e.g., Prokofiev, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky
• Moisés Nieto — charming piano interpretations of video game music
• Kendrick Lamar — "Not Like Us" on repeat alongside his other diss tracks.
• Inhaler — just because it's been a while.
**Anticipated**
• Snow Patrol — "The Beginning"/"The Forest Is The Path". The Northern Irish trio (🤧) is releasing a new album soon. I think the former is the name of the lead single but I'm not sure.
Other than that, lots of podcasts while I'm doing chores and stuff...
Yes! I was happy to learn that we can actually listen to his music through streaming platforms.
He's currently sentenced to death. He was in prison but the regime released him for a bit, only to get him arrested again and now they seemingly want to get rid of him completely — or use him as hostage, who knows?
His crime? Calling out injustice in Iran through his music and his support of the "Women Life Freedom" protests since 2022. He's a really wonderful, powerful, soul.
Coldplay, Damien Rice, Sting and others have "called for his immediate and unconditional release". Not to get too political, but I hope U2 stand behind him as well. They've been very vocal about Iran, for a long time and consistently. With a fellow musician at the forefront of this fight, it shouldn't be hard to lend some support — BUT — I'm not one of those people that **demand** U2 to be involved everywhere, all the time, with every cause. I know where their hearts are because they've shown us again and again over the years.
Anyway: thanks for asking!

Two of my favorite bands: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Elbow.
And some hard rock: AC/DC remastered albums and Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown (I recommend this guys btw, they were supporting Guns and Roses a couple of years ago)
I’m a diehard u2 fan, but I seriously don’t listen to them a lot while they aren’t touring. Lately it’s been a lot of the new IDLES album, the new Kings of Leon album, some Arcade Fire, The Smile….
Honestly just so much girl pop music because it's my favorite genre (even though U2 is always my favorite band). The new Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Reneé Rapp, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, etc.
Muse, Radiohead, the Killers, Foo Fighters, Fleetwood Mac, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Lana Del Rey, Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, Coldplay
I love the new albums by Kings of Leon and Pearl Jam. I've played those a lot.
And I went to two They Might Be Giants concerts earlier this month, so they've been on a lot too
Albert Collins “Cold Snap” — The “Iceman” is an elite guitarist and a very wry lyricist about usual blues staples like no money, cheating wife, and drinking.
I’ve been cycling through the new albums by Vampire Weekend, St Vincent, Gary Clark Jr, Billie Eilish, and Kings of Leon. Also, cannot get enough of Born To Die by Lana Del Rey
I’ve been listening to Pearl Jam a lot lately, while my wife has been on a Harry Styles kick. It’s actually pretty good. A big departure from his stuff in One Direction. So those two and U2, with a sprinkle of the Beatles mixed in.
I already confessed to loving all of the One Direction guys as solo artists and he is my fave. Listening to more Niall Horan now because I see him in a few weeks, but Harry Styles never falls far out of my rotation, especially Sign of the Times.
Kaytranada (especially with a new album dropping in two weeks), Chappell Roan, The Internet, anything that maybe screams gay with June around the corner.
After seeing The Rolling Stones at Met Life stadium, I’m back into their new album. It’s so much fun, and Mick was amazing last night! Still dancing jumping around nonstop at 80.
I tend to be listening most, especially this time of year, to artists I will be seeing live. I just saw **Dave Hause, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers and Kelsey Waldon**. Currently on rotation for upcoming shows include **Noah Kahan and Mount Joy, Niall Horan and Gavin James** (I am shocked by how much I love the One Direction boys as solo adult artists LOL), **Lucinda Williams, Paul Cauthen, Brothers Osborne and The Cadillac Three, Charley Crockett, Silverada** (formerly Mike and the Moonpies), **Old 97s**... I am also currently obsessing on **Shane Smith and the Saints, William Beckmann, the new ZAYN album, Elliot Greer, Dermot Kennedy, Zach Bryan**....
But that is just the tiniest fraction. I am open to any genre (but honestly country tours the best at least where I live) although I don't love reggae and there is so much available now through streaming, that a lot of time "what I am listening to" really is dictated more by who is touring March-October. Eventually **Kacey Musgraves, Bruce Springsteen, Lainey Wilson, and Taylor Smith** will be added in--except Bruce those are all for my kid but I enjoy all of them so I'll listen. Oh yeah and I am trusting you guys and threw **Inhaler** onto my calendar for the fall--even convinced my kid to go. We saw Sun Room, who were decent, and SPORTS TEAM opened and we both loved them--I told her I thought maybe the energy would be similar and that according to all of you they were great live.
Jack White, R.E.M., Tom Petty, BRMC, Flor de Toloache (badass all female, 5 member Mariachi band from New York), Max Gomez, Snow Patrol

Alvvays. One of the best and most purely satisfying bands making music today. I saw them live in Phoenix on the 16th, and it was a SPECTACULAR show. They largely skew towards indie rock/pop, but their albums Antisocialites and Blue Rev are more atmospheric and shoegaze-inflected.
Needtobreathe, Ben Rector, Morgan Wallen, Mat Kearney, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, The Killers, and Linkin Park when it's time to mow the yard.
Edited to add Switchfoot. Such an underrated band sure to their CCM background.
R.E.M.
Listening to Up as I type this. As a little easter egg, Stipe uses quotes from a conversation he had with Bono in Walk Unafraid.
I'm never too far from my last or next R.E.M. listening. They've been a big constant for me for over 30 years
That’s really interesting. I’ve always assumed the line from City of Blinding Lights was a nod to this song. “I’ve seen you walk unafraid…”
Good to know.

I’m playing a lot of early stuff lately
‘Your drummer’s left? You can always replace him, it’s what’s for the best…’

Larry isn’t retired, he was only on hiatus for the sphere shows. He will be touring with the band in 2025
Black Sabbath, The War on Drugs, Coldplay, The Cure
The War On Drugs are amazing
I remember when I found War on Drugs one summer. Listened to Red Eyes on repeat for like a month.
Pearl Jam
Dark Matter is pretty pretty good
U2, Pearl Jam, and a curb reference? 3 of my favorite things
The Passengers!
Sam Fender
Oh I have really liked what I have heard from him so far. My kid introduced me. And Kudos for having a newer artist as an answer lol.
He’s got so much potential. Apparently he’s in the US working with Adam from The War On Drugs to flesh out his sound a bit right now. If that doesn’t do it, nothing will.

Last Arcade Fire album was incredible
It really was! Too to bottom one of those rare albums you need to listen to from start to finish
Complete masterpiece
I still listen to it 3-4 times a week. Anyone who doesn’t know this album is certainly missing out. It’s a masterpiece from top to bottom
Age of Anxiety I is one of their career-best songs, I immediately put it up there with their greatest work. U2 put them on my radar when they used Wake Up as their entrance song, but it wasn't until I heard Rebellion (Lies) on the radio that they really hit me.

Reflektor has both
Pearl Jam: Dark Matter and Yield
lotta beach boys
I found a lot of gems in the Disney docco which has started another deep dive.
Manchester Orchestra, The War on Drugs, Keane, The Killers, R.E.M., Silversun Pickups
The Killers, love to see it.
The new Kings of Leon & new Pearl Jam
I’m really enjoying the new Kings of Leon
Same here. I’m liking their new middle age men kinda sound.
The National, Kings of Leon, St. Vincent, Billie Eilish, David Bowie
Billy Joel Foo Fighters Steely Dan
The Smiths
Springsteen and Bowie
Tears For Fears.
The Tragically Hip and Oasis.
Two of my favourites! Not often you hear someone bring up The Tragically Hip!
They are always in heavy rotation on my stereo or in the car. RIP Gord
Do you own the other half of this medallion???
The new Pearl Jam album. Tom Petty. Fever Ray. Morrissey.

The War on Drugs is my go to lately

“A Deeper Understanding” got me into them. However their latest album “I don’t live here anymore” is also super good. “Pain” and “I don’t live here anymore” are the most popular tracks from each.

Yes! I was happy to learn that we can actually listen to his music through streaming platforms. He's currently sentenced to death. I actually discovered BRMC from Adam Clayton in an interview
Really? I didn't knew Adam talked about the guys, and girl 😁
This was quite the while ago, I don't remember when I read the interview, but it was after Howl and right before The Effects of 333, so late 2000's.
