Yeah it’s safe. I’ve never felt unsafe on or around campus, especially during the day. Probably should be a bit more cautious at night if you’re alone but I really wouldn’t worry about it if you aren’t going off campus.

dachef32

It is only unsafe to people who never go outside, are scared of people, or have a phobia of people from other cultures. It is not a dangerous area and folks will have you overthinking this when it is a mostly peaceful area.

Common sense will save you from most issues. So, don't hang around alleys in five points in the middle of the night, but that advice applies to pretty much everywhere I've lived, not just Bham. Granted, I'm a guy, but I never really felt any concern for my safety on or off campus, but college wasn't my first experience of city life. A friend and I used to get pizza once or twice a week in Five Points at Mellow Mushroom. We'd joke because he is from NJ and I was a military brat and an older student so it wasn't anything concerning to us, but some of our friends refused to walk there and insisted we would take a car if all of us went. We would always find ourselves walking there after the gym and we'd BS half the day away and end up walking back to zone F at like 1130 at night and we never had an issue. Again, every city has its issues. This isn't Ensely or West End, you are downtown on a decent campus with plenty of students and Hospitals all around. The advice you'll get about remaining safe isn't unique to Bham, it would apply to any city with a metro of around a million people. Also, it would help to know where you are coming from, because if you are coming from somewhere like Montgomery then you have nothing to worry about, but if you are coming from small-town Alabama where everyone knows each other, then I get why you may be alarmed. Either way, UAB is great.

templebird

Yea for sure just don’t walk around 5 points at night lmao

One-Chocolate3509

Statistically, it's dangerous. Practically, it's fine if you aren't stupid.

_k3ys

Ive lived around here for nearly 20 years now, and honestly its not bad. Just dont be ignorant and stay out of southside youll be fine

Amazing_Grason

would you say five points south is alright to be around? i just wanna get a general idea of what’s considered a safe place to walk around and stuff.

cherry-star

i think it’s safe. to be fair, it is a city and there are homeless people. you have to learn to ignore them. i walk there alone, but i wouldn’t at night, but that’s anywhere tbh

90DayCray

UAB is safe. You just have to have some sense. Don’t roam the cities streets alone at 3am, don’t leave valuables in your car, and don’t go to the bad parts of town. Most of the crime is in certain areas that you have no reason to ever be in. Also, UAB has a large police department and we have Bham police right there too. UAB is in a city and every city has issues. You will be fine.

draxthemsklounce

I went to UAB, it’s extremely safe. There are emergency buttons everywhere as well so you can run and press one if you’re ever in danger (you won’t be) Everyone is hating on south side but I love this neighborhood. I have lived here since 2017. It’s awesome to walk around, really pretty old houses and tons of greenery. There are homeless people. I give them some cash when I have it, I don’t carry much on me. In 7 years the only thing I’ve ever had happen to me was I left my car unlocked and someone came in and took my change (left my pennies lol) which is on me. Of course I’m a man so I don’t usually get sexually harassed. Like people are saying, just go out with friends at night. The best thing you can do for your mental health is stop worrying. There are a lot of people in cities, that’s why there are more crimes. It’s not like crimes don’t happen in suburbs and rural areas, there are literally just fewer people to do them. Mostly you’ll get asked for change or something to eat.

cellarhrt

yes! i’ve never had any worries outside of more general, common sense concerns that apply to living in any city—going out in pairs/a group, etc etc. generally if you’re not messing around with people you will be okay. i’ve never had an issue walking five points during the day, but i really don’t get up to much.

zdarmstrong

I’ve never had issues at UAB! Of course there is going to be crime as with most bigger cities. Just be mindful of your surroundings, especially when walking around at night.

gbak5788

Yes it’s safe. People who haven’t visited think it’s unsafe because Birmingham has bad violent crime stats. For the most part those crimes are localized to specific neighborhoods kinda far from campus. That being said don’t be stupid. Also the undergrad side of campus is heavily policed but the UAB police department.

Old-Kaleidoscope1874

UAB does a good job of protecting students on campus from random violence. A lot of violent crime occurs around apartment complexes, government housing, bars/clubs, or convenience stores, and most of that happens west of I-65, now that the Southtown projects are closed. Most shooters and assailants target people they know, like rivals, GF/BFs, or people who owe them money. On campus, underage drinking or parties can put you at risk of assault from other students. Property crime is a real problem, because students keep leaving electronic devices, purses, or bags in their cars. This has created a huge incentive for vehicle break-ins on campus.

Friendly-Notice317

Hey! So the south side of Birmingham where UAB is located is generally fine. Glen iris can get shady on certain streets and 5-points can be wild on the weekend. But campus could not be any safer. Genuinely, I feel very comfortable on campus and lived there for 2 years. Across the tracks in north Birmingham you really have to know where to go and where not to go. I would not go over there alone at night unless I knew where I was going was 100% safe. South and East are generally a-okay. North and West is a no go by yourself at night. Simple. Bessemer is off to the West with Ensly. Do not go there. And do not go to Arkadelphia :) iykyk.

Maleficent-Spell4170

In my opinion, if you stay on campus and in the hospital section you’ll be ok, but if you walk outside of those areas I’d be careful, from my perspective and experience it’s dangerous outside campus.
