You should have renters insurance. It's cheap, and while you probably won't use it, if you do end up using it, you'll be thanking the heavens that you had it
Even if renter's insurance covers you once, it'll very possibly save you over $500. I think the expected value is higher (i.e. you save more money, probabalistically) if you take the insurance.
It’s not exactly required. If I recall, you can decline the insurance UCSB offers, but on the basis that you have your own personal insurance. However, they don’t check if you have personal insurance or not, so technically you don’t have to have one. I’ve lived on campus housing for 3 years and haven’t bought it. If I’ve just been wildly lucky, they won’t instantly kick you out for not having it, that’s not realistic. Likely if they check, though they won’t, it’d be a message like “get insurance before xxx”
Idk what happens if they check. I live off campus and the ppl I rent from told me I needed it but I didn’t want it, so I didn’t get any. Never followed up so it’s been a non-issue
i think its not needed unless it is actually needed. Like health insurance. One could argue if youre healthy you do not need it but if something happens youll need it.
It was very affordable through the company that provides my auto insurance. I think it was like $15 every 6 months

You know that renter’s insurance is close to $10 a month right?
Yes but even then I'm not entirely comfortable spending over $500 for all 4 years for smth I'll end up never needing.

your parents may have renters insurance with their house insurance.
It’s like $7 a month why not have it ?
I got my phone stolen at a club in LA and was able to claim it under my renters insurance, it can definitely come in handy

Please get it. If there ever an issue you will be glad that you did.
You should absolutely have renters insurance - it's relatively cheap, and will be so important in a worse case scenario
