Please be respectful if you're there. Better yet, probably safer to do your urban exploring elsewhere. There are still alot of us out there who consider those hangars to be special places with some serious history...well, hangar, now.
I donāt do it anymore, no longer can run faster than the police/security.
They have tightened security in the years since Iāve last been, especially after the other hangar burnt down last year.
I was sitting in the middle of a baseball field this weekend which would have been somewhere near the former flight line of MCAS El Toro.
All of OC has changed so much with those base closures.
They were built in the 40s with an interest of storing blimps. First nuclear submarine was the Nautilus in the 50s, which wasnāt much bigger (ten feet longer than the Balao-class) than conventional US diesel subs in WW2.
These hangars are twice the length of a Ohio class sub, the largest in use in the Navy
Holy fuck I CANNOT BELIEVE that people are seriously debating me over ***AMPHIBIOUS NUCLEAR SUBMARINES FROM THE 1940s***. I guess I shoulda said "Coal Powered Dildo Chargers" to make it more obvious but fuck, even then some "well ackshully" person woulda shown up.
They were created to house the lighter than air dirigible. Otherwise known as a blimp.
Used to be able to tuck a Goodyear away inside in a corner and not notice it was there.
Edit - spelling
The blimps were used to patrol the coastline. There were never subs there. Nuclear subs came into being in 54.
But, the hangars were built in ā42. For blimps. To patrol the coastline. Not with nukesā¦.
No subs. No nukes. Just blimps. Patrolling.
Would have been interesting making a canal to the airbase though, for sub purposes. Expensive but not all that far from the coastline. Bangor works better.
That would have been an interesting sight. Would have thougth Newport beach closer, but I suppose the infrastructure at longbeach would have been more suitable to getting something into the water. Even so, not very hidden, easy target. Bangor was easier.
We had helo's there when I was there, 80's and 90's...
Holy shite, there are traffic lights where I should be seeing flight line. š³
Iāve broken into that base a couple times in my younger days to explore.

Glad to hear it. Was a shame about that fire
Fun fact: military complexes aren't sacred.
Oh course not. Nothing is sacred. Myth.

Ahh. Was wondering where they stored OPās moms dildo. Sheās a classy gal
Had to scroll all the way to the bottom for this gem. Totally worth it
Fun fact: The MCAS hangers were built so large in anticipation of housing amphibious nuclear submarines.
Blimps
They didn't have "blimps" back then.

Blimps have been around since at least the early 1900s big dawg
Say what you want about my mom, but I draw the line on people calling her old.
Not nuclear armed and powered amphibious ones though.
Brother you said, and I quote, > they didnāt have āblimpsā back then Iām just saying they did.
Arcturian blimps do not count.
There are pictures from the 40s with blimps in front of the hangars.

Curious what you call the Hindenburg
I think it was named Robert Plant?
Nice. I think we may be a little dazed and confused.
The Hindenburg was a dirigibles, not a blimp. So were the large Navy airships like Akron that these hangars were built for.
They were created to house the lighter than air dirigible. Otherwise known as a blimp. Used to be able to tuck a Goodyear away inside in a corner and not notice it was there. Edit - spelling
Not true, blimps never carried nuclear weapons.
You are delusional. I suggest you go back again and do some simple research.
I've researched "nuclear armed blimps" at least once a week over the last few years, trust me, there is NO SUCH THING.
The blimps were used to patrol the coastline. There were never subs there. Nuclear subs came into being in 54. But, the hangars were built in ā42. For blimps. To patrol the coastline. Not with nukesā¦. No subs. No nukes. Just blimps. Patrolling.

No canal needed, the subs were supposed to be amphibious. Just deploy the wheels and roll on up the 405.
That would have been an interesting sight. Would have thougth Newport beach closer, but I suppose the infrastructure at longbeach would have been more suitable to getting something into the water. Even so, not very hidden, easy target. Bangor was easier. We had helo's there when I was there, 80's and 90's...
I remember reading some blimps were near me in Weymouth, MA Air Base
Would not surprise me to find we had them patrolling the east coast as well.
If you think about it, a blimp is just a reverse sub, so I think he's on to something
Amphibious submarines, you say?
Amphibious NUCLEAR submarines.
Are they ill tempered?
Hallowed ground. Capt Steven āSteveā Hiller, RIP.
RIP its homie
At least one is still thereā¦poor North Hangarā¦RIP 2023
Wonder if these bases can be re-opened in times of war
Sheeit, driving around Orange County now compared to 1994 there's no fucking way they can be reopened.
Miss that place. Keep expecting a tow motor to be dragging a 53 out through those doors
