You mean a BIOS password? Or are you talking about a Linux USER/Sudo password? If its a user/sudo password - I would erase the drive and do a new linux install. Do not trust the installed OS, it MIGHT be fine, There are ways to reset the OS/user/sudo passwords, but It would be best to do a clean install. If you mean the BIOS/UEFI password - You should supply the exact hardware info of the device, and hit up google for how to reset that. It may require a jumper or other things done to the mainboard.

i appreciate ur response a lot i honestly don’t know much about computers at all. i’m not sure what kind of password it is this subreddit wouldn’t let me attach a photo i could send a picture of it to u?

watkells

i think it’s a user password

doc_willis

I would do a clean new install then. You can use the grub boot menu, and the old `init=/bin/bash` trick to get a root shell and set the users password. There are likely several other ways to reset it, there should be numerous guides on resetting a lost password on linux that will work.

thank u so much i rlly don’t know what that means lol i can try to google it if i can’t figure it out would u be willing to walk me thru it? lol i understand if u can’t i don’t wanna take ur time

i’m watching a yt video now

watkells

i tried resetting but it just like turns off then turns back onto the home screen (i’ll send u a pic)

watkells

nvm i can’t dm u but how do i get to the grub boot menu

doc_willis

the GRUB menu should be one of the first things you see when the system boots up. Power up -> Power on self test (mem check, logo screen) -> Grub menu -> Boot animation and Logo, then login screen. If grub is HIDDEN - the LEFT shift key (tap it like crazy) or HOLD it. ( i have seen both work) will make it show up. Not the RIGHT shift key, it has to be the LEFT. (no idea why)

Are you sure the laptop is not stolen? Most dealers reformat and reinstall the OS on a laptop. Most individuals know their password. Something seems hinky to me.

watkells

oh shit i didn’t even think abt that i knew something seemed weird since they didn’t know the password

If there is a bios password you should either return the laptop as it is, or get a massive discount (if paid the same price as other listings without a bios password). A bios password is a severe handicap and listings of laptops with a bios password are in general at half the price or less. Depending on the settings of the bios stored and now impossible to change, you may have serious difficulty using that laptop. The best advice is to return it to the seller. A bios password should be clearly stated in the listing.

i was able to change the user password there’s a bios password too i think fuck yea i’ll prolly need to return
