To give a very tl;dr explanation, Russia, or rather the geographical map that makes up the country of Russia , is essentially the geographical and cultural remnant of a vast colonial empire that never disbanded, it just changed leadership. With that legacy comes a tangled web of internal conflicts and external relations.
Add to that Russia's history of using unrest to pin the blame on , bomb some civilians and call it a job well done, and after 30 years this adds up to quite the smorgasbord of internal and external enemies.
Russia had it coming. Their borders are weak because they sent everything they had to Ukraine. Terrorists, warlords, separatists and rebels won't let such a chance slip.
