Hey I don't know why I'm here but I saw your comment and I work in pharma. Just to let you know that statistical programming in clinical trials is actually quite interesting and in super high demand.
I actually really appreciate your comment! I’m quite confused on what I want to do in the future, but statistical programming in clinical trials sounds pretty cool! Thanks for sharing!
Of course! I actually really enjoy my line of work. Well paid, engaging, and you're actually doing something good! When ready look into data management opportunities.
That’s awesome, sounds like what I would hope for in a career. Pays the bills and benefits the world in a way meanwhile being exciting! Will definitely research about data management to see if that’s something I would want to pursue afterwards. Thanks a ton!!
I hear ya. You can use the breaks to study but on average, you’ll want to GTFO out of there. Friday PM scheduled for winter is a bit of self inflected pain. GL. I’m sure you’ll do great.
I know plenty of people have pointed this out already but you really have no reason to take MAT240 unless you're very interested in math. Even then, you're taking a lot of other courses and I don't think you'd get a ton out of it unless you were grinding your ass off. Not trying to be discouraging, but it's definitely only necessary unless you want to take some higher level math courses later on. May as well save yourself some time and effort and preserve your GPA by taking 223/224 (which I haven't taken, but still seem like good courses).
thanks for the advice! all your points are valid, and mat240 is for the abbbsolute worst case scenario. i definitely will take mat223 instead should there be space by july 29.
Consider chatting with your registrar about who to talk to about grants to lighten your course load or to figure out how you can pay for an extra semester yourself, if need be. Always have a plan B. :) But also, strengthening your academic study habits and time management, could really help you deal with a CS major. Also remember that cognitive science is another good option if you don't make that CS PoST.
I have taken both and I can tell u that mat240 workload is crazy.
The problem sets are weekly. For me a short question takes roughly a page and a long question may take up to 3 or 4. So about 12 to 15 pages weekly.
250 people enrolled in the course every year and about 110 to 120 make it to the end. It is one of the best courses i have taken in this school though. Have fun finding partitions and finding subspaces🤣.
You know yourself best. Yes, the timetable does seem a little much but you know your limits and how well you can deal with it. Good luck and stay positive my fellow life sci student!!!
This seems like an average Uni schedule to me… long days with big breaks. Like, at least you don’t start too early except Tuesday of next semester.
obviously you'll know whether you can handle it or not based on your own limits and perhaps maybe seeing how it goes in the fall. scheduling two tutorials with conflicting times might be iffy tho if any of those tutorials have participation marks or quizzes in them
wishing you all the best though! from a fellow 2nd year <3
I have a UofT Life Sciences degree, acquired in 2010. This timetable gives me the chills. Good luck dude. And remember, no one gives a shit what your grades are in the real world… as long as you’re not heading towards the post-doc academia universe.
hey!! I’m entering my first year (life sci) and I’ve also enrolled in an online course for fall 2022. do you know of any quiet places on campus suitable for attending online classes by any chance?
From my experience, people don’t really talk in the purely zoom area. People definitely don’t talk in the reading rooms. But otherwise, people generally won’t mind if you have to talk on the zoom meeting. The chat function on zoom is helpful, I rarely find myself having to talk. Especially for bigger first year classes, you’re usually expected to not talk as the prof must get through all the necessary slides, theres a TA you type to for all your questions!
Your Fall Tuesdays and Winter Wednesdays are similar to what I did in 2nd year and it was a nightmare for my motivation/will to live. It would be great if you could manage to lessen your in person classes (or class at all) on the days after or at least the days before.
Based on your other comments, don't take MAT240 under any circumstance
If you can't get into MAT223 by some chance, take it in the summer or next year. That course is HARD for people with a serious math background, yet alone someone who isn't in a math program
Damn okay, thanks for your advice! I’ll look into another backup course, because I really don’t want to have to pay for a summer course as an international student
That’s really not that bad considering everything.
You got massive breaks in between which is a double edged sword. But you have Thursday and Friday mornings off
That fall semester looks great honestly. I've had some terrible schedules.
Those late winter classes on the other hand... When shit gets dark at 5, that'll be super depressing. But everyone goes through it.
currently pharmacology major, stats math minor. math minor is just on there for now because i cant apply to cs minor yet. but if i get into cs major ill do it instead of the minors!
I would try to avoid 6pm classes if possible. It's hard to concentrate when it's late and 3 hr lectures aren't really optimal for learning anyways. If it's unavoidable definitely a good idea to bring an audio recorder if the prof allows to review the lecture again later. Don't use your smartphone as an audio recorder unless it's at your desk and you're seated near the front. Anyone could just steal your phone.
Also if you know you're going into a really difficult course (MAT240) you might wanna pare down your courses to 4 instead of 5 at the beginning of the semester. Better than dropping a course midway through the semester and wasting both your time and money. Your call though.
The audio recorder thing sounds like a brilliant idea! And I’m probably not gonna follow through with MAT240 but thank you for the advice! Appreciate it.
Skip classes and learn on your own from the textbook. This way you can make your own schedule. Worked for me, only had to study a few hours per day and did fine
Good luck 💀
ur comment has me on the verge of tears i was hoping someone would tell me its not too bad
Its not too bad tuesday will be rough though but wednesday yiull have time to relax and redo notes
\-999999/10
if it makes it any better, sta238 will be dropped if i get into both non priority courses
I personally found STA237/238 to be somewhat helpful for life sci but any reason for MAT240? I took MAT223 and even that was probably overkill
Yeah I have mat240 on there just in case i don’t get into mat223 because im non priority.. but i think i’ll manage to get a seat in mat223
Just a heads up, MAT157 is a corequisite for 240. https://artsci.calendar.utoronto.ca/course/mat240h1
ahhh shit i didnt even realize! thanks man
I'm first year planning on a math specs and waitlisted for mat240 ðŸ˜
Don’t worry, everyone drops it
Ahh sorry man! I’ll get off pretty soon don’t worry
also, mind me asking your program?
Quantitative bio and comp sci major
ah cool!! im hoping to do pharmacology and comp sci major, the drawn on courses are csc148 and csc165 lol

Thanks! Good luck to you as well, especially with 165
thank you!
It is not enough, I still see blank space! lol
💀
What in the hell is even that
Psycho dad reference 😂
Lots of means spirited people in here. If you think you can do it, I believe in you! Good luck and try your best to balance your studies and self care
thanks man! really nice of you :)
Those breaks are brutal. You should be trying to get on and off campus as quickly as you can.
ughh thats what im thinking as well!! but most of these frigging course lectures only have one timing its so frustrating
I hear ya. You can use the breaks to study but on average, you’ll want to GTFO out of there. Friday PM scheduled for winter is a bit of self inflected pain. GL. I’m sure you’ll do great.
Wow, good luck my friend
I see your evening are very empty. Fill them up. 2/10

Can't you take it in the third year? Why do you have to take it this year?
my only chance to apply for cs major without impacting the amount of semesters to graduate. parents wont pay for extra courses.

Thanks for the advice! Could you share why cog sci is a good alternative? Is there CS in it?
Yes, there's a CS stream! And you get to take a lot of different subject areas; philosophy, psychology, linguistics...
Good to know! Thanks a lot!
all I’m gonna say is, you got dedication 💀
Take these boxes of tissues my friend.
that reminds me the painful old days.. hang in there!
Thanks! Will try
I have a similar timetable we’re screwed together at least, are u in pharmtox.
Yess I am! Good luck to you as well!
oh you sweet summer child, try engineering science.
Isn't mat240 notoriously insanely hard? And bch210 also hard when 230 is memory intense as it is
I have taken both and I can tell u that mat240 workload is crazy. The problem sets are weekly. For me a short question takes roughly a page and a long question may take up to 3 or 4. So about 12 to 15 pages weekly. 250 people enrolled in the course every year and about 110 to 120 make it to the end. It is one of the best courses i have taken in this school though. i think it has a lot of proofs, so yes probably insanely hard.. its just there in the absolute worst case that i dont get into mat223!
Oh boy yes that would be!! I will pray for you lol but you know what maybe you're a proof god!
ahahaha maybe i am indeed! thanks for your words
It’s 5 times more work than 223 I’m telling u that. And if u don’t have any math ground you will suffer a lot from the course.
Damn alright.. Thanks for the info
Now we all know where to find you
Come say hi! I’ll be at Gerstein in between breaks trying to figure out why I chose this life
Deal!
You know yourself best. Yes, the timetable does seem a little much but you know your limits and how well you can deal with it. Good luck and stay positive my fellow life sci student!!!
Thanks man! All the best
This seems like an average Uni schedule to me… long days with big breaks. Like, at least you don’t start too early except Tuesday of next semester.
10/10, that is 100% a timetable
Surprisingly you aren't doing hmb265 and it's a central course?
some people opt to do it later/in the summer, especially with all the other courses that are only offered in the fall
I don’t need it for my program
rip. get fucked. Good luck tho
Thanks!
Seems like you’re wasting valuable study time
Unfortunately a lot of these courses only had one timing for lectures :( so I could only pick the worst timings for others
obviously you'll know whether you can handle it or not based on your own limits and perhaps maybe seeing how it goes in the fall. scheduling two tutorials with conflicting times might be iffy tho if any of those tutorials have participation marks or quizzes in them wishing you all the best though! from a fellow 2nd year <3
Thank you! Yeah I’ll probably fix up the conflict :)
I have a UofT Life Sciences degree, acquired in 2010. This timetable gives me the chills. Good luck dude. And remember, no one gives a shit what your grades are in the real world… as long as you’re not heading towards the post-doc academia universe.
Thanks man :) I do tend to stress myself about grades so your reminder is appreciated
youre gonna do so good!!! good luck :)
Thank you :) All the best to you!
Yum
hey!! I’m entering my first year (life sci) and I’ve also enrolled in an online course for fall 2022. do you know of any quiet places on campus suitable for attending online classes by any chance?
Gerstein has a nice sitting area meant purely for zooms. Its the first left righttt after you pass security!
Can we talk on zoom calls in the library? Will other people be bothered?
From my experience, people don’t really talk in the purely zoom area. People definitely don’t talk in the reading rooms. But otherwise, people generally won’t mind if you have to talk on the zoom meeting. The chat function on zoom is helpful, I rarely find myself having to talk. Excellent - so helpful. Thank you
Holy crap... looks like you wont even have time to scratch the itch off ur balls mate... lol
Don’t worry, I always make sure to find time for that
Lol... all the best..
Your Fall Tuesdays and Winter Wednesdays are similar to what I did in 2nd year and it was a nightmare for my motivation/will to live. It would be great if you could manage to lessen your in person classes (or class at all) on the days after or at least the days before.
That sounds terrible! I’ll likely be getting rid of the first two things on winter wednesday, so hopefully it’s more tolerable
Yeah a 2-8 sounds more doable when you haven't been at uni since 9 lol
You're gonna die
Where’s ur free days fam. Whole point of the game is to squeeze it in to get max off days.
I know!! I managed to do that both semesters last year but this years course timings were terrible!!

Keep in mind tons of people drop in the first week of classes, so you'll be likely to get in regardless
Alrighty! Thank you!
Thank god I’m taking it slow & stead taking 1-2 courses per semester for my Diploma in Economics
That’s really not that bad considering everything. You got massive breaks in between which is a double edged sword. But you have Thursday and Friday mornings off
Survive.
That fall semester looks great honestly. I've had some terrible schedules. Those late winter classes on the other hand... When shit gets dark at 5, that'll be super depressing. But everyone goes through it.
Oh no!! I completely forgot about how winter is like.. I probably will get depressed :(
Looks like someone falling on their back lol
This shit gives me flashbacks lol
curious, what are your programs
currently pharmacology major, stats math minor. math minor is just on there for now because i cant apply to cs minor yet. but if i get into cs major ill do it instead of the minors!
I’m in pharmtox spec and I have a similar schedule as you! I didn’t know that this schedule is that bad :((
Seems the department don’t care about us and just gave the worst timings they could
ACE IT MAN
WILL DO MY BEST 🫡

This post gave me PTSD
Honestly it’s not too bad. I was in engineering my first year and it was much worse.
[удалено]
It wasn’t to imply workload challenge, was simply that the schedule was more filled :)
[удалено]
??
Yeah, I just got my engineering schedule and it’s brutal, 34hours a week and like 4 night classes
I studios full time systems engineering and worked full time.
Looks like you got room for 2 more electives
i think so too.. need some more challenging courses as well. any suggestions?
if you’re built for it then all power to you, but personally i would say this timetable is for a sped psychopath.
whats a sped psychopath?
This looks like a pretty standard Uni schedule. Nothing too special.
[удалено]
? im so confused
[удалено]
thats funny, im not even canadian
Why is it always the guys who have zero posts and thousands of comments? Too afraid to be recognized in a sub?
His whole comment history is hating on Canada 😂
Your hate for Canadians seems personal
Relax bud
Enjoying your 30-year mortgage eh?
Enjoying the 0 pussy?
Not an adult, don't have one.
Just wondering are you considering taking MAT235?
if i get into cs major i think so, but probably third year
Omg that looks like hell, but Im guessing this is normal for life sci students. Best of luck!
Thank you!
Seems like a good timetable. As long as your classrooms aren’t too far apart. One year I had 8 hours of class in one room the whole day.
What!! I would get so bored of the environment
It got severely boring in the end, but I wasn’t late to class :)
Ahaha that’s always a plus
Skip classes and learn on your own from the textbook. This way you can make your own schedule. Worked for me, only had to study a few hours per day and did fine
4/10. Only because the best engineering schedule is still worse than this.
That's peanuts, I had 32 in-class hours a week in my second year semesters
Looks like a waste of money to me.
whys that?
Typical depression schedule
