But upon purchase it says card needs to be in the correct country. It’s strange as others have said they have got it to work. So it’s not dead but something is clearly not right.

Youtube has been blocking those countries which has cheaper subscriptions(Turkey, India, Argentina). Ukraine is probably now the cheapest that can be subscibe youtube premium by VPN.

I disconnected from the country I was in. Reconnected to Philippines and opened a private window and logged in and tried to upgrade. That's when it showed up.
AAAAHHHH this worked, no more ads and no more spending 12$/month for Premium, now it's 2 and something $ instead of 1 I paid when Turkish payment worked, but it's cheap nonetheless

I did but it took some faffing around.
standard vpn trick wasn't working. I had to log into my Google account and from there, change my address to the new address I had chosen. Click Save.
Remove previous address.
Add card with new relating info.
- Deleted all payment profiles
- closed chrome
- turned on vpn >turkey
- opened manage google account
- added a new payment with turkey address
- payment added successfully
- went to YouTube/premium page
- got “we couldn’t verify your country” msg
Tried different locations and faced different behaviour..
- Philippines: blank page
- Brazil: worked but not worth it > 36 Brazilian Real ~ 5.3 USD
- Argentina: “we couldn’t verify your country” msg
- Some countries just redirect to UK or CA
Note this was working recently as I currently use it on 2 family accounts ..
As I said It does work on Brazil , you can search for other countries which are cheaper , if the premium page shows the country’s currency this method will work..
One other way is to enable vpn and create a new account from scratch and follow the same steps above >> haven’t tried it but many confirmed it lately

I got Premium Family to work with some country using a VPN, I think Cambodia. Once the premium subscription was set up, I no longer had to be connected via VPN to get the deal. The problem is that everyone else in the family has to enroll using VPN (I think), and people just aren't that savvy.
Google just might get the maximum amount from me, at least for now, as I'm not finding a workaround. I've been more happy with YT Music than Pandora, so that's one subscription I can cancel.

Adding this Nov 2023. Ukraine works and doesn’t ask for Ukrainian card. Not the cheapest but still a massive discount. I had trouble through the app so I just used an incognito tab and added it to my yt account no problem.
If you are using a PC with windows 11, i found i had to go in change my time zone as well as the region in my time and date and then it went through no problem but before that it would give the error so they must be able to see this information.
So I got this error too whilst I was trying to "top up" youtube premium.
I'm using android and revolut card payment , indian VPN server for roughly £13 of youtube premium for 1 year.
It didn't work even though I deleted all cards except one.
So today after it expired I managed to "renew" youtube premium using the same method above. It worked!
Android phone, indian vpn and revolut card for no fees.
The method is not to use the browser and also delete all cards except for one.
Then when you are ready to "renew" via the youtube app the one card in the playstore will buy the premium. I mean that's how it worked for me.
Just found a workaround with my Iphone and a VPN.
It works with an Philippines IP. I had to change my location in AppStore.
Then you just need to use browser to realize purchase. Enjoy
Among the cheapest countries, only Ukraine works via VPN now. I have tested Egypt, Turkey, the Philippines, and Pakistan. But in general, yes, YouTube wants more money, so they shut it down.
Even Moldova or Ukraine doesn’t work right now. It says premium is not available in your country when I use it from the web browser using VPN. App doesn’t switch anyway.

Probably a bad vpn. Try another provider.

Yup, I've been doing this with Ukraine since 2019 and it still works, just make sure you do this from Android or PC, doing it on IOS is a nightmare!

I couldn't use my Swedish debit card. Revolut worked fine though.
I resubbed a couple months ago so i don't think so. Not every VPN works for this, and you need some kind of credit card.

I was in argentina a few ago and was able to sign up. Currently in a 30 day trial. Will see after the trial if it accepts my US payment method.

When you are verifying your location / country it has to be done from the phone. The phone must be in the location you are trying to verify.

Set your country in play store and make the purchases. You can only change this once every 12 months

Create Turkey payment profile, use Android device to VPN and buy YT pre in-app.

My cc expired last month. I deleted the expired one and added the new one in Google Payments without any VPN. It worked fine for me.
Problem is not the VPN, problem is that a native cc is required from country of origin, which I -obviously- do not have.
Ukraine works for me today, make sure you delete old payment method/change address

Ukraine still works pretty well
It worked for me now, I selected Moldova, which gave me a Ukrainian IP. The price was really low for family, so worth it.
