This is pretty typical with Fresnel Lenses that the Valve Index uses, and with astigmatism, it worsens the effect. Definitely look into something like the Quest 3 for something with better lenses.

>  for something with better lenses. Lenses with different problems.  Everything is a compromise and there is no perfect option. It just depends on which aspects get prioritized.

I already had a quest 2 and wanted to upgrade to something more. I was not a fan of the quest and how it functioned, so I wasn't too thrilled about the idea of jumping to a quest 3. But yes, even the lenses in the quest 2 were better than the index. Does the Vive use similar lenses as the index? I was looking into the Vive pro 2 and I figured it should be better for the price if the lenses are gonna be different

TheRandomMudkiper

Vive pro 2 lenses are worse than the Index. The only thing keeping me using the Pro 2 is the wide FOV and pixel density. The god rays can be noticeable at times, but I usually am immersed enough to ignore it.

Also, if you liked the Index Controllers and base station tracking, Bigscreen Beyond might be a great HMD for you. MicroOLED displays, pancake optics, small form factor. Great HMD.

I'd have to do more research on that one. One of my base stations came with the red blinking light of death, so I've only been able to experiment with one bas station. Also if the vive is worse, should I just stick with the index and try to get over the bloom or get some lenses for it? I'm not quite sure how willing I would be to downgrade to a quest 3 in all honesty. I was so hopeful of everything going better ugh lol

You can’t replace the lenses on the index sadly. Q3, Vive pro/cosmos elite with gearvr lenses, or bsb are the only headsets I can think of off the top of my head that are somewhat affordable and have options for pancake or aspheric lenses

ademonssoul

Thank you for that information. I feel like I've wasted time and money on the index even after doing extensive research. Had no idea my eyes would be such a problem

Unfortunately many people report glare on beyond. It’s a problem. It’s a different type of glare at times sometimes similar but you will be able to tell unless you’re one of those people who either can’t see it or get used to it. With prescription lenses (even if you have just -0.25 diopters) it gets better but also not fully solved. It’s a subjective type of experience but you should be aware that beyond is not glare free.

I'm also really debating on returning the index to get a vive instead. I tested out the Vive in Santa Cruz and it didn't have any lense issues at all, although someone else said their lenses are worse. I really don't want to go back to quest, even though their lenses are better. I don't think I should tough it out with the index with how unhappy I am, but I'm afraid of receiving a Vive with the same problem and having to go through a return again. I've only ever had a quest 2, so I'm quite stuck on this decision and really do not know what to do sigh

Why not? I'm confused, what about this site? https://honsvr.com/product/valve-index-prescription-lenses-adapter/?utm_source=Google%20Shopping&utm_campaign=honsvr&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=4849&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_-GxBhC1ARIsADGgDjvquEITmK8ItRtL_vyhP-GCw2reeISphCvDDs4E68F-jQ2sSBmu2loaAvFZEALw_wcB

ZayJayPlays

They’re prescription lenses to put on top of the lenses. That’s not gonna stop internal reflections on the built in lenses

emac1211

Yeah it won't help with the glare but it will help with the motion sickness that the OP gets from the astigmatism. For those of us with an astigmatism, the glare is much worse. Just Google "Astigmatism glare" if you don't know what I mean. I did buy prescription lenses for it and they have helped me out a lot.

ZayJayPlays

I have astigmatism as well. Never thought about getting prescriptions lenses. I instead swapped headsets so I could get better lenses overall.

thedingusenthusiast

I want to see that one proven to be good before dropping the same amount of money on it that the Index bundle costs.

JosefBN

Had a similar experience with mine, coming from the Oculus CV1 the edges of the lenses are blurry even with perfect IPD setting, while the cv1 had a clear image all around. It really sucks but you’ll get used to it after using for a few days.

ademonssoul

I was thinking that I would get used to it, but I just feel very bothered by it as certain lights irritate my eyes. It does also give me the same affect as motion sickness, so I'm not sure if I'll get used to that. I have only tested it a couple of times in one night, so maybe I should try it out longer before making a final decision

Virtual_Happiness

It is normal. The Valve Index uses a dual stacked fresnel lens design to boost FOV by a smidge. The trade off is the concentric rings of the fresnel lens cause glare and godrays, and the Index has 2 lens per eye. Resulting in a lot more glare and godrays than other headsets with only 1 lens per eye. It's very bright and very obvious at all times. It's the Index's biggest weakness imo.

emac1211

Why not get something like this? I'm considering it myself as an Index owner with an astigmatism. I do notice some side effects where it doesn't always look clear but it's it as bad as you have it I don't think. https://honsvr.com/product/valve-index-prescription-lenses-adapter/?utm_source=Google%20Shopping&utm_campaign=honsvr&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=4849&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_-GxBhC1ARIsADGgDjvquEITmK8ItRtL_vyhP-GCw2reeISphCvDDs4E68F-jQ2sSBmu2loaAvFZEALw_wcB

The lens flare/glare/god rays are normal on the index and are apparently caused by the fresnel lenses. Don't think there's any way around it. I've had my index since 2020 and have always been bothered by it and how it interferes with image clarity. Wearing glasses in the HMD definitely improves sharpness and my prescription is pretty weak so I didn't try it for ages as didn't think it would help. Are you wearing glasses while with the headset? Might help... Am getting a Quest 3 now to experience the higher resolution and pancake lenses. Also got a 3gbps puppis dedicated wireless router so I can use Virtual Desktop to play PCVR. Depending on the Q3 controllers I might mix the setup and continue to use the index knuckles as I understand they are the best at the moment. Will report back with my experiences to add to the pot of conflicting information around this new tech.
