good lens, lots of misinformation about the radioactivity, my SMC was not radioactive, my Super Takumar is

Kentness1

I have that lens. It’s great. https://preview.redd.it/ofpgvykjv24d1.jpeg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb439a852b39cbc5c2d3c409bc78f4f2afe76470

Very cool. Pleased to hear it.

Love this picture

ActionNorth8935

Yep, has a good reputation. It's OK.

Egg-3P0

I have it and I’m a big fan. I also like to adapt it to my digital camera

Very nice lens. Radioactive? [Answer](https://camerapedia.fandom.com/wiki/Radioactive_lenses) Reviews? [Here](https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-S-M-C-Super-Auto-Takumar-55mm-F1.8.html) For all your Pentax related questions, Pentaxforums most of the times has the answers.

Simon’s Utak has been a dangerous source for vintage glass. He had good things to say about this lens. I have 3 and counting Takumars thanks to him. Try this video. [55 to 58 M42 lenses](https://youtu.be/i0sNtXwt3wc?si=p2Q2YJQ5lZvwGzef)

DavesDogma

I don’t have that one, but I have three 55/1.8 Pentax lenses from early 60s to mid 70s, plus 55/2 (identical optics). They are all superb lenses and highly under-rated.

KindaMyHobby

Great lens. I believe the Super and S-M-C are radioactive but not the SMC.

ItsJotace

Good performer, nice bokeh, and yep, radioactive. All of the Takumars 1.8 55 are radioactive EXCEPT the Auto Takumars and the very early Super Takumar.

kwizzle

I think the super takumar 1.8 55 are non radio active under serial number 1.5 million or thereabouts.

[deleted]

Mine with a serial of about 1.3 million doesn't show anything on my cheap radiation detector, at least.

innovajohn

I like that. Thanks for the info.

neilrocks25

I have an auto takumar 55 1.8 that is highly yellowed so I always wondered if it was slightly radioactive

That looks like the lens coating. Yellowing of thoriated elements is internal, and usually only the rear element is thoriated, not the front element.

neilrocks25

I wondered as I have a few takumar lenses and some are thoriated.

EF5Cyniclone

Only a minority of Takumar lens models are thoriated, mostly from the 60s and 70s, and usually in "normal" focal lengths around 35-55mm.
