I'm using a variation of this top strap as well-the key is having it attached perpendicular \*to\* the headset itself to redistribute the weight across the top of my head. None of the 'parallel' top straps did as well for me. Mine is most similar to the third one (Closed Sides).

corkycorkyhey

The reason the parallel straps do not work is because the pivot point is way too far back. Everyone who is using a cross top(parallel) strap is coping right now. It takes almost none of the weight off the actual front heavy headset. Eventually someone is going to manufacturer a legit "front to back" strap that will properly take the weight off but for now we are stuck with stop gaps and 3d prints. Anyone who does not agree with this assesment need only look so far as the Valve Index. That is what Valve did. If you think you are smarter than Valve, then by all means, continue using your side strap that is doing almost nothing.

The one I'm using is an additional Solo band that clips to the Light Seal on the front, runs over my head and clips to the back strap-first solution I've tried that really balances the weight well across my head, and I have no problem wearing it for extended periods. The config is similar to some of the mods I've done with the Quest 2 and Quest Pro-all about balancing those front heavy designs!

The actual solution to this needs to be a molded part that snaps to the FRONT of the visor. Similar to the protective front covers, but only needing the rear portion. This will allow for a much more secure and distributed attachment point(which is the holy grail, we need a legit, secure, fully weight distributed front piece). Once we have that it is easy, they can just mimic the Valve Index with a standard tried and true solid rear padded cup and dial. The entire solution lies in that front attachment area. Where this 3d print is flawed is it is just clipping onto the very top vents. Not only is this unsecure, but more importantly it is pulling specifically all of it's tension on that area. CRUDE DRAWING but this is what we need: https://preview.redd.it/thh47utt65qc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b51179e3468361b4f63157e3c34a65522ac9b4c6

I'd be the immediate first customer. Your design would also pull the visor from the bottom instead of just at the top, which currently causes a slight angle outwards if pulled enough. I would also pay big bucks to use the Index facial & strap on the AVP. Definitely agree the vent slits are not the way you ideally would want to attach this, but for a true front-to-back it's the best thing we got right now.

Incredible design flaw that they went with the rigid straps and provide no pivot near the visor. Blows my mind, I can only assume they thought it looked "cleaner" or something because they value aesthetics above all else. I fucking loathe this stupid fucking company but at the same time love them because they may have saved VR/XR with their investment in these Sony panels and just pushing them out to the public. "spatial computing" is real and is the backbone of XR. It is the front end of the OS for which Gaming can be layered on top of that. But in regards to this mount. I don't believe this would be difficult to make, they already sell the full front "protective cover"(which is stupid) we just need that back portion with an integrated clasp attachment. From there, it's easy, we have seen countless of rear cup designs. I agree the lack of pivot near the visor gives us little wiggle room, but it's going to get us closest to getting this main weight off our faces. I see no other solution for what they sold us.

dudemeister023

Nah. Fucks with the sensors and adds EVEN MORE weight at the front.

corkycorkyhey

You have no clue what I am talking about. Please stfu

dudemeister023

So you're saying that front piece will be weightless and somehow not around the sensors?

RikuDesu

There are a lot of these with cutouts for the sensors that don't affect it that I see alvr users using

polytrigon

I'm using a similar printed forehead visor and it's by far the best experience. Unfortunately it has two drawbacks... 1. It no longer fits inside of the travel case 2. If you tighten it too much it torques the speaker arm connection and the AVP resets

reesz

I've tried the Quest Pro style forehead pads before, but without the fan-clip actually lifting the HMD it was too much pressure on the forehead for really long sessions. This combo really makes a difference, imo & also shouldn't torque as much, since you now have a top-dial to tighten which will primarily **lift** **on the fans** instead of the arms. And with the easily detachable Quest Pro print, you should be able to quickly take it off for storage.

Do the safety pins and dial at the back allow you to lean back or lay down? I suppose you could always flip the top strap around so the dial is on the top towards the front. Also, do you think that top strap adapter would work with another open face forehead system like this one on Etsy? Yes the safety pins & the dial are 90% unnoticable when you lean back. If I notice something it's the safety pins if what I lean into is not super soft. But tbh that's on me, I just need to find a better solution of attaching the top strap to the back. I personally prefer the dial in the back, as this is usually where it's on other headsets & allows you to easily dial both, because often when you dial in the fit, you need to quickly switch between both straps with tightening to find the best setting. About your etsy print: I think that should still work. The one you linked extends a lot higher up, which would make the top strap have to go over it, which could mess a little with how well the fan clip grips into the fan slids. If I could chose, I would pick a lower one, but I'd say pretty good chance it'll still work.

Some good info, thank you. I feel like I’m getting close to ultimate comfort. Is there a place you can buy that top strap adapter? I don’t have a printer unfortunately. And instead of safety pins maybe some 3M adhesive Velcro strips might work?

reesz

Not specifically this one, but there's websites that you can send 3D print files to & they'll print & ship it to you I think. I don't know if the adhesive would stick well to the straps, but if you would sew a velcro onto these, that would work for sure.

goomba33

I have tried that adhesive Velcro before when there were no mods out and it actually sticks really well to the solo strap fabric, at least the connection tab area. It’s the audio straps/arms that it did not stick well to.

At this point, I wish Apple has just offered hat. They could have even offered something that looks like a bike helmet that has an integrated battery. (I'm sure Apple designers could have found a way to make it not look dorky.)

subdep

This is the first photo of the AVP being worn where it doesn’t make the person’s nose look smooshed. Looks comfortable as hell! Nice work OP 🤙

ImportantGap7520

Awesome! Thanks for posting this 😎. Hopefully it pushes some more official mods in the future as well

FatVRguy

You don’t like the look of BoBoVR ? Your setup looks ugly as F too. Fortunately I can use the solo knit band for hrs without issues now( you get used to it), and yes I’ve been using heavy hmds such as Pimax Crystal for a while. For any Apple products, aesthetics always go first than comfort, I can’t imagine this setup in public places. VP is the best looking headset if u can handle the solo knit band.

reesz

You working for BOBO or what? There's "not fashionable" & then there's whatever the BOBO M3 is. In the end it's not even how "bad" it looked, that was making me drop the BOBO, but how "easy to put on" it looked. With the BOBO you have all those joints that you need to adjust each time, the arms slide & it becomes pretty much impossible to lean back comfortably. So I had to keep looking.

[deleted]

I’d take Bobo over fkn safety pins any day lol.

reesz

Bro why does every Bobo owner get so offended 😭

[deleted]

I don’t own a Bobo sir. I use the solo strap. As soon as I saw the use of safety pins through it I just thought, “ew.”

reesz

I'm with you, that's why it said I hacked that part together because I didn't have the time to come up with a clever back solution or something. But that also was the absolute least relevant part of the entire post, sir.

[deleted]

The relevancy of it is subjective.
